LETTER FROM
THE PRESIDENT
With advancing age, muscles tend to get stiff and joints
become less flexible. The same malady can be true of
aging organizations. When organizations calcify, they
lose sight of the reality that they live in a world that is
changing at a dizzying rate. At Cornerstone University, as
we near the 80-year mark, we are committed to resisting
institutional rigidity by staying nimble.
This nimbleness is reflected in our ongoing focus to
provide state-of-the-art facilities and programs that
match emerging opportunities for our students.
•§
This is the first year of our stunningly designed
Jack and Mary De Witt Center for Science and
Technology which contains the very best equipment in
a modern learning environment.
•§
Programmatically, the addition of engineering and
nursing provide opportunities for our students to
pursue their callings in fields that are in high demand.
•§
Our new Creativity and Innovation Honors Institute
is a highly successful draw for students who want
to develop design thinking and problem-solving
skills which are in high demand by employers—not
to mention the ability to approach career and life
problems with creative and innovative solutions.
•§
I am especially fond of our new Pathway program
which opens the door of opportunity to students with
high potential who otherwise would not have been
able to matriculate into our academic environment.
•§
With half of our adult students at Grand Rapids
Theological Seminary and Professional & Graduate
Studies now earning degrees online, we’re constantly
updating technology and delivery modes for such
programs as our doctoral program in organizational
leadership and our master’s program in counseling.
•§
The brand-new home for WCSG radio is currently
under construction, preparing the station to meet the
ever-changing landscape of digital media.
Ultimately, while we nimbly strive to stay in sync with the
changing demands of our world, there are some things
that will never change. Among them is our intentional
commitment to offer a Christ-centered educational
experience that empowers our students to not only
distinguish themselves in their careers but to passionately
influence their world with the values and virtues of Christ
and His kingdom!
All of this is why I love it here!
For His glory,
CAMPUS
NEWS
NEW PROGRAM LAUNCHES IN
BIBLICAL EXEGESIS FOR DISERNING
MINISTRY PRACTITIONERS
A newly announced master’s program in biblical exegesis
gives pastors, ministry leaders and aspiring theologians
access to advanced training in biblical interpretation,
languages and the ancient context of the Old and New
Testaments. Not compromising academic rigor, the
program can be completed in half the time of a Master of
Divinity degree and empowers students to communicate
God’s truth in today’s world.
Beyond foundational courses in hermeneutics and
systematic theology, the M.A. Biblical Exegesis degree
program features the concentrated study of an exegetical
specialization in Old Testament studies which requires
learning biblical Hebrew, New Testament studies which
includes learning biblical Greek or a hybrid of Old and
New Testament studies.
“The degree focuses specifically in biblical exegesis
whereas our other degree programs focus on ministry
leadership or spiritual formation,” said Dr. Timothy
Gombis, professor of New Testament. “While those
are important, this degree offers targeted training in
scriptural interpretation for those who already have
ministry experience or are already involved in spiritual
formation.”
Prepared to welcome its first seminarians to the program
in fall 2020, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary
is currently accepting applications. For admission
requirements, visit cornerstone.edu/exegesis.
FINANCE STUDENTS ATTEND
KINGDOM ADVISORS CONFERENCE
IN CANADA
Awarded a grant from the Ron Blue Institute, seven
traditional undergraduate students and one faculty
representative of the Ron Blue Institute at Cornerstone
University attended the 2019 Kingdom Advisors
Canadian One Day Conference in Ontario. The
conference united established and aspiring financial
professionals who are passionate about educating their
clients in the principles of biblical financial stewardship.
“As Christians, we should be willing stewards managing all
God has given us,” said Chris Kellner, assistant professor
of finance and director of programs for the Ron Blue
Center at Cornerstone University. “Our students
should know what that means and how to live it out. The
Kingdom Advisor Conference visit and our Ron Blue
Center programs work to that end. Christian stewardship
gives both freedom and responsibility, all focused on
relationship to our Creator and His creation.”
BUSINESS PROGRAM ACCREDITATION
SIGNIFIES DEDICATION TO
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
Approved as a member institution of the Accreditation
Council for Business Schools (ACBSP), Cornerstone
is one of 10 colleges in Michigan to offer ACBSP
accredited business programs. For CU, the accreditation
recognizes the quality of its bachelor’s- and master’slevel
business programs and commitment to the ongoing
improvement of its curriculum and assessment of student
learning outcomes.
PGS ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP TO
SUPPORT SINGLE MOTHERS
Funded by a generous grant from Monticello College
Foundation, a new scholarship provided financial
resources for five single mother students based on
financial need. Eliminating some key barriers that can
interfere with a single parent’s journey in pursuing his or
her education, the scholarship bridged the gap between
overall financial aid and the total cost of tuition and
assisted single mothers who are passionate about being an
example for their children and pursuing their career goals.
PATHWAY PROGRAM ENTERS ITS
SECOND YEAR OF CREATING NEW
PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS
Launched in 2018, the barrier-breaking Pathway program
inspires traditionally underserved, first-generation
students to succeed in completing a college degree.
Directed by Mario Adkins, assistant director of academic
success, the program offers free study labs, tutoring,
advising and mentoring to its 21 enrolled students,
preparing them to graduate with an associate degree in
two years or head into a bachelor’s program of
their choice.
“Pathway has allowed me to thrive in college,” said
Selena McGrew, strategic communications major from
Cassopolis, Mich. “I have been able to grow closer with
teachers because of the small classroom setting and,
along with that, I have learned to lean on my cohort when
I need help. Also having an amazing academic adviser
and good role model to lead our cohort has allowed this
experience to be academically and socially transformative
in my life.”
NEW CENTERS PRIORITIZE
STUDENT SUCCESS AND FACULTY
SCHOLARSHIP
Verna Miller Center for Student Success
A nearly $1 million renovation transformed Verna Miller
Hall into a dedicated hub for students to access health,
wellness, counseling, career and academic support
resources. Renamed the Verna Miller Center for Student
Success, the building strategically prepares students
to succeed in their careers and lives by increasing the
visibility, accessibility and knowledge of student services
available on campus and centralizing the location of
student services offices.
Logos Center
A repurposed space in Miller Library now provides a
committed venue to support faculty in their vocation as
scholars, practitioners and lifelong learners.
“With the Logos Center, we deepen our commitment to
the formation of faculty, contribute to student success
and make a positive influence on the West Michigan
community,” said Dr. Michael Pasquale, professor of
linguistics. “I believe the Logos Center has just as much
to say about our university and the place we are taking
in the world. That we value our faculty, that we value
scholarship, and we support our place in this community
to be present and speak to the issues facing our
community.
“We are also equipping faculty to help student success by
strengthening our vocation as scholars and, in turn, to be
excellent as mentors and teachers to our great student
body. We also see our place within the West Michigan
community and look to offer a place to share ideas that
will build up this community that we call home.”
BRAND RESEARCH INITIATIVE BUILDS
CONSENSUS AND LEADS TO NEW
MESSAGING STRATEGY
To equip university faculty and staff with tools and a
common language to clearly, accurately and resolutely
express the distinct characteristics of Cornerstone and its
story, CU administrators hired Carnegie Dartlet, a higher
education marketing firm, to lead a year-long, universitywide
brand research study.
“After careful research and analysis, the university
selected Carnegie Dartlet because of their strong
reputation in conducting qualitative and quantitative
research to produce a customized strategic marketing
strategy,” stated Dr. Peter Osborn, executive vice
president and COO. “This research-informed process
involved key stakeholders—current students, alumni,
faculty, staff and prospective students and families—
and is informing all aspects of our marketing and
communication strategies so that we are presenting an
authentic and compelling image of who the university is
and the services it offers.”
Who is Cornerstone University at its best?
More than 340 participants who represented a diverse
sampling of university alumni, staff, faculty and students
attended six on-campus workshops and one online
workshop. Attendees individually and collectively shared
their perspectives on the university’s personality and
voice through involvement in guided exercises and
proprietary methods directed by Carnegie Darlet who
captured a statistically significant number of qualitative
and quantitative data points.
Based on the findings that result from an investigation
of the university’s personality, messaging and perception,
Cornerstone anticipates realizing new opportunities
for growth in enrollment, market awareness and brand
recognition. In 2020 and beyond, this positions the
university to attract a new generation of dedicated
students who desire to be salt and light in our world
for Christ.
CAMPUS EVENTS
Together for the City with Tim Keller
A host site for Together for the City, Cornerstone
welcomed 850 pastors and ministry leaders to campus
in mid-September for a talk on the unity of the church
given by bestselling author Tim Keller. The event
coincided with the recent publication of “Together for
the City: How Collaborative Church Planting Leaders to
Citywide Movements” by Neil Powell and John James.
“Tim Keller’s call for unity among churches and
congregations is significant in terms of Christ’s prayer
in John 17 that people would know we are followers of
Christ because of our oneness,” commented Dr. Joe
Stowell, university president. “The call for unity is also
timely given the increasing darkness of our culture. We
no longer have the luxury of living in our own silos but
need to go arm-in-arm into our culture with the good
news of Jesus Christ.”
Homecoming & Family Weekend 2019
During three picturesque fall days, this year’s
Homecoming & Family Weekend invited alumni
and families of current students to share in campus
experiences and celebrate the milestones of
Cornerstone. More than 1,000 guests attended events,
lining the sidelines to cheer for student-athletes,
feasting on pancakes with the president, attending
academic receptions and enjoying shuttle rides to nearby
Robinette’s Apple Haus for fresh doughnuts and cider.
La Cumbre Global de Liderazgo
An inspiring three-way partnership between the
Asociación de Pastores de Grand Rapids, Cornerstone
and the Urban Church Leadership Center has resulted
in plans to host West Michigan’s first Global Leadership
Summit in Spanish on Feb. 28, 2020. The one-day
event will show translated recordings of presentations
originally delivered at the Global Leadership Network’s
annual conference.
“For the Urban Church Leadership Center, one of
the vital parts of our mission is to provide high-quality
resources to Hispanic pastors and congregational
leaders by offering true access to content that will
add perspective to their ministries,” shared Rev. Julián
Guzmán, director of the Urban Church Leadership
Center. “By true access, I mean resources that are
affordable, in Spanish and in their backyard; this is
true access.”
WCSG DEEPENS
ROOTS IN
WEST MICHIGAN
CU-OWNED RADIO STATION
TRANSITIONS TO LONG-ANTICIPATED
NEW FACILITY
An inconspicuous beige building that once sat quietly in the southeastern part of Cornerstone
University’s campus is now teeming with excitement and activity. Located at East Beltline and Bradford
Street, the former church is the bustling construction site of the university’s most recent renovation—
Project 2020. In just a few short months, the building will be the new home for the long-standing
Christian radio station WCSG.
PLANTING SEEDS
WCSG began broadcasting in 1973. An endeavor led by a handful of passionate students of the then
Grand Rapids Baptist College and Seminary, WCSG featured easy listening, classical tunes and Bible
teaching. The team operated out of a building known fondly by students today as the “blue” gym. Over
the next two decades, WCSG would transition to a solely Christian station and become the foundation
for many on-air ministries, including His Kids Radio, Mission Network News and WayFM. Today,
the station broadcasts family-friendly and commercial-free adult contemporary Christian music and
teaching programs.
STANDING FIRM
Nearly 50 years later, listener-funded WCSG is heard by over 180,000 listeners on four frequencies,
ranking consistently as one of the top three radio stations in West Michigan. The station is still
proudly run by graduates and at present, one half of WCSG employees, including executive director
Chris Lemke (B.A. ’84), are former Cornerstone students. The station has long since outgrown its
7,100-square-foot facility, and to maintain current broadcasting volume and expand into other digital
outlets outside of traditional radio, it is finally expanding into a bigger, better studio.
BRANCHING OUT
PLANNING GROWTH
The idea of expanding is nothing new, with talk dating
back to the early 1990s when then station manager
Lee Geysbeek (B.A. ’93) dreamt of a larger, more
sophisticated facility.
It wouldn’t be until 2017 that a decades-old dream
would start becoming a reality. With the go-ahead from
CU, the proposed $5.7 million remodel of the former
church could finally go public with Project 2020, the
station’s first ever capital campaign. In late April 2019,
during a week-long radio campaign, listeners of WCSG
committed over $1 million toward a new building, bringing
funding to 95% after private contributions had reached
80% earlier in the year. The new studio will provide
nearly 5,000 square feet of additional space, easily
housing dedicated on-air personalities, a greater number
of support staff and more advanced technology and
equipment.
“The listeners are our team and an integral part of who
we are,” Lemke says in appreciation for the overwhelming
response of the community. “It has been incredible to see
how God has favored the whole process.”
Since the official groundbreaking in September 2019,
Lemke and the entire WCSG staff have anticipated the
opportunities the new broadcast studio will offer. For
one, going deeper into the community and broadening
into different platforms as part of a strategic initiative.
On a technical level, the new building will be able to
accommodate more digital platforms, expanding into
podcasts, streaming and social media, in addition to
traditional radio. WCSG also hopes to award students
pursuing media careers with scholarships and valuable
learning experience at the station. With a greater number
of employees overall, WCSG will be able to partner with
churches and organizations on a bigger scale and create a
larger impact within the community.
“God has given us an incredible gift,” says Lemke, who
looks forward to what the future holds for WCSG.
“We aspire to be the leading media influence in West
Michigan, and with the resources to match our staff’s
skills and passion for listeners, we can see more people
come to Jesus.”
CONVENIENT
AND
CONNECTED
ONLINE PROGRAMS OFFER GREATER
ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY
Getting a college degree doesn’t necessarily look like
it did 10 to 15 years ago. Many students today are
parents, business owners, managers in corporations
or have full-time jobs that don’t allow flexibility
for traditional education. Most are likely facing a
combination of challenges, including time constraints,
geographical distance or physical limitations that simply
make an online program their best option.
To meet this need, Cornerstone is dedicated to not only
providing access to quality online education but also to
serving students well in the process.
MEETING STUDENTS WHERE
THEY ARE
“Students are looking for flexible choices when it
comes to pursuing their education for a lot of different
reasons,” says Dr. Peter Osborn, executive vice
president and COO at Cornerstone. “Online isn’t just
a matter of convenience. It also opens pathways and
provides access to learning opportunities completely
different from traditional education.”
For example, Osborn points out that many introverts
learn better in an online environment because it
offers the opportunity to contribute and participate
in discussions without feeling put on the spot in a
classroom setting. Instead, students have the time to
read, reflect and then participate in a thoughtful way
through class discussion boards. Other students might
be facing unique health issues or work situations that
make traditional education impossible. “For students
like this, online is the only way to succeed in reaching
their goals,” says Osborn. “I think that’s the exciting
opportunity we offer with online programs.”
Trevor McCready, director of online learning for
the Professional & Graduate Studies division, agrees.
“We know our students often have to fight through
a lot of obstacles, but they’re also determined to
succeed, so our goal is to meet them where they’re
at and to provide the best education and experience
possible in a way that supports them and helps them
reach their goals.”
The PGS cohort learning model offers a sense of
community and belonging similar to traditional
education. Cohorts are comprised of 10 to 15
students who interact with each other and their
professors during the course of their studies.
“Cohorts help students know that they’re not in
this alone,” says McCready.
“Cornerstone does everything it can to work with
you through evening courses and online options. It’s
definitely doable. They make it easy,” says PGS
student Micah Meendering (M.S.M. ’14, M.B.A.’17).
SERVING STUDENTS WELL
Cornerstone offered its first online program in 2005,
and today students from all over the world can receive
associate, bachelor’s, master’s and even a doctoral
degree online. While many universities offer online
programs, Cornerstone’s goal is to not only provide
an excellent education but also to serve students in
a hands-on, personal way through engaged faculty
members.
“Our faculty engage with our students and are interested in their lives,” says
McCready. “We know they are likely leaders, managers, parents, and they carry
all these things into their courses. So it’s not just about doing the work; it’s about
building relationships.”
Students especially value the personal interest faculty members take in their
lives and the support system they find at CU. “Supporting students is about
open communication,” says Steve Graham, vice president of marketing for Radio
America Network and an adjunct faculty member teaching online courses since
2012. “We don’t know where students are in their lives, so it’s about learning who
they are, anticipating their needs and showing you’re with them in the process.”
Whether through prompt replies, video conferencing, or voice recorded
feedback from faculty, students experience more connected and personalized
online learning at CU. “Our online students express gratitude when faculty
members make the effort to give personal and thorough feedback on their
assignments,” says Connie Sattler, a PGS faculty member who oversees
instructional technology at CU.
These personal connections also prove valuable for many years to come. Graham
invites his students to connect via LinkedIn after classes so they can share in
each other’s professional achievements, even years later. “Recently, a few of
my former students got great promotions, and I wouldn’t have known that if we
weren’t connected. I love seeing that.”
A PROMISING FUTURE
CU has seen a 20 percent growth in online students each year since 2005.
Shifting away from the paradigm of mere convenience, CU is providing unique
ways to help a diverse student body overcome challenges to education they’re
facing. As technology has evolved, online education has also become accessible
to more people. Students can connect to CU’s learning environment anywhere
a computer has Internet access or via a mobile device. All learning takes
place in the context of this environment, including viewing course materials,
communicating with professors and classmates, quizzes and grading. And
because CU offers 24/7 support, those who don’t consider themselves “tech
savvy” have the extra help they need, when they need it.
As online education continues to grow and evolve, faculty stick to a theme that
remains essential: presence. “It’s about showing students you’re not only actively
involved in the classroom, but also interested in their personal stories,” says
Graham. “That speaks to the greater mission of what we do at CU.”
FROM STATUS
QUO KEEPERS
TO PROBLEM-
SOLVERS
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION HONORS
INSTITUTE IS CHANGING THE WAY
STUDENTS WORK AND THINK.
Imagine giving 25 high-achieving college students each
a lump of Playdough and asking them to create the
most beautiful tree possible. Then, visualize what might
happen next. They go to work, but eventually, they
begin looking around at their neighbor’s trees. And they
panic. Do their trees look better? How is “beautiful”
even defined? By what criteria will I be graded? What if I
fail? Or worse, I’m embarrassed?
This scenario plays out each fall semester in
Cornerstone University’s Creativity and Innovation
Honors Institute (CIHI). It might sound like a simple
exercise, but it’s packed full of meaning and learning
possibilities.
BECOMING PROBLEM SOLVERS
By participating in exercises like this, Don Perini,
director of CIHI, says students begin to change the way
they think. “We’re actually helping them rewire their
brains to think differently,” he says, referring to the
concept of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to
change continuously throughout an individual’s life.
Exercises like this are designed to help students cope
with self-doubt and fear of failure and discover their
worth and significance isn’t based solely on results.
It’s part of a process called design thinking, which
emphasizes the process—by revisiting and revising
mistakes—not the product itself.
“By asking students to create their trees, look at any
mistakes, mess it up and do it over again, they’re
learning it doesn’t have to be perfect the first time,”
says Perini. “They’re learning to innovate by making
iterations, and they’re learning that failures don’t
determine whether or not you succeed in the end. It’s a
different way of thinking.”
This new way of thinking, he says, is key to becoming
a creative problem solver, a skill that’s one of the most
sought-after traits by employers and business leaders
today. According to a survey conducted on behalf of the
Association of American Colleges & Universities, 95%
of employers prioritize innovation among their hiring
preferences. Perini says his own conversations with
local and regional businesses confirm their desire for
graduates with creative problem-solving capacities.
A NEW WAY OF EDUCATING
CIHI, which began fall 2018 with two cohorts, is a
response to this desire. It’s a unique program, giving highachieving
students an opportunity to receive a classical
liberal arts education integrated with content in creativity
and innovation. Project-based learning experiences,
intentional student cohorts, seminar-style discussions led
by expert faculty and the opportunity to earn a second
major in creativity and innovation are all elements of
the program, which is open to high school seniors with
a 3.5 G.P.A. or higher via an application process. Each
semester is comprised of two cohorts of 20 to 25 firstyear
students each. Students choose a major in their
area of interest and then also receive a second major in
creativity and innovation.
Perini and Dr. Michael Stevens, professor of English and
faculty member in the program, explain there are three
parts to the program. First, like other honors programs,
CIHI emphasizes the great books by engaging ideas
at the heart of a liberal arts education and examining
foundational texts that have shaped Western thought.
Second, students learn to examine issues from an
interdisciplinary approach. For example, they not only
study refugee and immigration through a political lens
but also from psychological, sociological and historical
perspectives. Because CIHI is designed to expand
thinking and develop critical skills, the third focus is
on creativity and innovation, which emphasizes design
thinking, creative habits and innovation techniques.
Stevens says, “I enjoy the tension created in this program
by combining traditional and non-traditional approaches.
It’s good for students to experience this tension in styles
and approaches and to find their way through it. It’s all
part of learning to face the anxiety and fear that can
come with the unknown.”
LIFE-CHANGING RESULTS
According to Perini, CIHI is unlike any program in the
country, and the results have been impressive. CU
recently hired Julia Petersen, assistant professor of
creativity and innovation, to help manage the growing
student demand in the program, and CIHI is also
receiving attention from other institutions and West
Michigan businesses interested in learning more about
the program.
In addition, current students are reporting high
satisfaction. “Being in the CIHI program was the best
decision I have made in my college career thus far,” says
Madison Marks, a business marketing student. “I have
already learned so many tools that I can use in my future
career, and I am only in my second year.”
“This degree changes the way I approach life,” says
sophomore Joelle Henry from Caledonia, Mich. She
says CIHI has helped her not only learn to care for
others better but also to better care for herself. She’s
learning to process things with a problem-solver mindset
and has the tools to come up with new, creative ideas.
“This will be helpful as I go into education because I will
be able to add creativity into the classroom and help the
kids learn better.”
THE RISE OF CREATIVITY
IN THE CONCEPTUAL AGE
Prior to the 21st century, a knowledge-based approach to work and life
drove economic growth and employer expectations.
Today, the Conceptual Age elevates skills in design thinking and
problem solving and has led to a nearly two-decade expansion of
creativity studies at Cornerstone. In addition to the CIHI program, all
undergraduate students at Cornerstone are required to complete the
IDS-101: Creativity, Innovation and Problem Solving course.
2000
Prior to the start of the
Conceptual Age, technical
skills and knowledge were
valued in the workplace. Now,
the need for creative and
empathizers rules the future.
2006
CU offered its first class in creativity and
innovation, enrolling 12 students, to see
if there was interest in the topic. Student
feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
2008
A creativity class—IDS-101: Creativity,
Innovation and Problem Solving—is adopted as
a requirement for all traditional undergraduate
students, making CU the first university to
integrate training in creative habits and design
thinking elements in its curriculum.
2007
CU offered a second run of a creativity
and innovation course and 70 students
registered for the class.
2015
The university started offering a
minor in creativity and innovation.
2018
The Creativity and
Innovation Honors
Institute, also known as
CIHI, launched its first
cohort, enrolling 45 highachieving
students.
2020
Cornerstone will
have over 130 honors
students enrolled in
the CIHI program.
The next phase is to find ways
to partner with businesses and
schools to promote creativity and
