WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY?
By Gerson Moreno-Riaño, Ph.D., President of Cornerstone University
What makes a Christian university Christian? This was the question that
Cornerstone University’s faculty and staff considered during our annual
fall retreat at the start of the 2022-23 academic year. There is no more
profound question in Christian higher education than this question. What
makes a Christian university and the education it offers Christian?
Contents
The answer is simple. What makes a Christian university and its
education Christian, what makes Cornerstone and its education
Christian, is its embodied commitment to the preeminence and
supremacy of Christ in every aspect of the university. Nothing
else will suffice.
If a Christian university is only Christian in so far as
Jesus Christ is absolutely central in everything that
the university does, then universities that proclaim
to be Christian have a tremendous privilege and
responsibility to ensure this centrality and hold
themselves accountable to ensuring and
manifesting this centrality. This is beautiful,
all-important, hard work.
One Allegiance
One of the chief ways to accomplish this
monumental task at Cornerstone is for
us to articulate, implement, advance and
defend the Christian worldview in the
totality of all that we do. The Christian
worldview is nothing less than the
Lordship of Jesus Christ over every inch of
every part of all of reality. It is the Truth —
God’s Truth — about all of reality. It is both
the Truth about what not to do as well as
the Truth about what to do.
The Christian worldview is at the very
core of Cornerstone’s great mission.
Cornerstone exists to educate “men and
women to excel as influencers in our world
for Christ by offering a student-focused
learning community where Jesus Christ is
central.”
The Christian worldview has also been
beautifully articulated in The Cornerstone
Christian Worldview (CCW). Beginning
in January 2022, Cornerstone employees
drafted this rich statement during a
collaborative and campus-wide, eightmonth-long
process, a process that ended
in September 2022 with the affirmation
of the CCW by the university’s board of
trustees. Cornerstone’s beautiful Christian
worldview statement begins with this
profound declaration:
The Christian worldview is a
comprehensive outlook on all parts of life
based on the Holy Scriptures — the Bible.
The Christian worldview clarifies our life
in this world. It helps us to understand
who we are, how we and the world have
been harmed, what is the solution, and
where we are going. It tells us the meaning
of life, what is real, what is right and
wrong, and what is truth and
how we can discover it. We
the people of Cornerstone
University commit ourselves
to The Cornerstone
Christian Worldview as our
comprehensive outlook on all
parts of life and as our guide
for living and understanding
the world. 1
The articulation of the Christian
worldview at Cornerstone demonstrates
our commitment to the Lordship of
Jesus Christ over every inch of every
part of all of Cornerstone — from the
hiring of our employees to the teaching
in our classrooms, to the creation and
assessment of our curricula, to the
conversations in our dining hall, to our
worship and preaching in chapel, to the
competitions on our athletic fields, to the
student life in our dorms, to the teaching
in our online courses, and to everything
else in between. This articulation signals
our unreserved commitment in heart, soul,
strength and mind to the Truth — God’s
Truth — about all of reality. It signifies our
unreserved commitment both to the Truth
about what not to do as well as the Truth
about what to do.
Pillars of Christ-Centered Education
Cornerstone’s articulation of and
commitment to the Christian worldview,
however, is just the start. Now begins
the good, hard work of implementing
The Cornerstone Christian Worldview
in every inch of every part of all of
Cornerstone. This implementation is
what we call the Cornerstone Christian
Worldview Ecosystem. This ecosystem is
best understood as a loving, sacrificial,
collaborative community of diverse,
committed Christ followers who
continually create and offer value to
Cornerstone’s students and the community
at large through the sophisticated
application of the Christian worldview
to academic fields of inquiry, to industry
and market sectors, and to the deepest
questions and longings of humanity.
The Cornerstone Christian Worldview Ecosystem is a comprehensive implementation
initiative structured around six key pillars. These pillars were delineated during the
inaugural State of the University Address on November 4, 2022, and are as follows:
Cornerstone must continually and lovingly
submit to the Holy Bible as the written,
verbally inspired, inerrant, supreme, and
final authoritative revelation of God over
all things.
Cornerstone must exemplify a vibrant
lived-out commitment to the preeminence
of Christ and the richness of the Biblical
gospel.
Cornerstone must boldly affirm, live
out and be held accountable to its
foundational commitments. 2
Cornerstone must nurture an
organizational culture rich in
opportunities for the spiritual growth of its
employees.
Cornerstone must deploy the CU Promise
educational model to fulfill its mission to
graduate Christian influencers (see page
4).
Cornerstone must position itself as the
preeminent Christian thought leader
through the sophisticated presentation of
Biblical wisdom for the flourishing of our
communities.
What a wonderful privilege and opportunity
for our university and all our people to do
this work together. What a tremendous
privilege and opportunity for our university
and all our people to do this work so that
we can educate today’s and tomorrow’s
Christian influencers.
Please pray for Cornerstone and our
people as we engage in this beautiful work.
There is much to do with excellence, great
urgency, many adjustments and continual
constructive change. But our LORD, our
mission and the education of our students
require no less from us.
SOLI DEO GLORIA.
Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño serves as the 12th president of Cornerstone University. As a
teacher at heart, he has championed higher education that is Biblically centered, growthminded
LEADERS OF COMPETENCE
AND CHARACTER
The Six Distinguishing Characteristics of CU Christian Influencers
Confidence in higher education has sharply
declined according to a recent Gallup poll
from June 1-22, 2023, titled “Americans’
Confidence in Higher Education Down
Sharply.” Falling to 36% in 2023 versus
57% in 2015, 1 this decline comes amidst
questions about degree value, high cost,
free speech, and politicization of higher
education as well as concerns about trust
in America’s most influential institutions.
Cornerstone University is committed to
providing families with a trusted education
that offers measurable value by providing
character-forming experiences that
positively influence the marketplace and
society. The CU Promise is Cornerstone’s
pathway to educate, spiritually form and
leaders of skill and character who influence
the world for Jesus Christ. With a focus
on six defining outcomes, Cornerstone
CHRISTIAN THOUGHT LEADERSHIP
Sold-Out Wisdom Conversations Wrestled With the Future of Christianity and the American Church
On Thursday, October 5, Cornerstone
University welcomed nearly 1,000
attendees for its fourth signature Wisdom
Conversations community event. Titled
“Christianity in America: Declining Toward
Insignificance or Resurging Toward
Revival?” Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño,
president of Cornerstone, moderated the
panel featuring nationally acclaimed guest
experts: best-selling author Eric Metaxas;
author Tara Beth Leach; and political
commentator Derryk Green.
Each panelist provided specialized
knowledge in subject areas ranging from
religious history and church leadership to
spiritual formation and discipleship. Topics
examined included the crucial role of the
family unit in faith formation; the longterm
effects of syncretism as a worldview;
and opportunities for increased synergy
between educational institutions and the
local church.
At key points, Metaxas compared the
German church of the 1930s and the
American church today, charging listeners
to embody Biblical truth and clearly
communicate its countercultural tenets in
every aspect of their lives.
“If you don’t live out your faith, it means you
don’t believe,” Metaxas stated. “I think we
have been fooled by the enemy into just
having this cerebral faith which is actually
no faith. You have to live out your faith in
every sphere, and you will bring it to every
institution. If you’re a believer, you’ll speak
against corruption and against lying and
against anything that is not of God. That’s
your job.”
When the discussion considered the
involvement of Christians in politics, Leach
challenged attendees toward lives as
engaged citizens while remembering their
true source of citizenship.
“We are citizens of the kingdom, and there’s
but one King,” Leach commented. “And the
kingdom of God is in us as it is in heaven —
that’s the calling.”
In closing, Green, along with his fellow
panelists, implored the audience to live
lives of boldness as Christ followers.
“As Christians, we have to get a little bit
more bolder,” Green said. “We should
defend the faith because … it’s true, it’s
right, it’s in God’s Word. Nothing can take
that away.”
A NEW VOCABULARY
Linguistics Students Selected to Consult on AI Language Learning Solution
For Dr. Michael Pasquale and his senior
linguistics students, the fall 2023 semester
provided a new learning lab for asking
critical questions about the future of AI
technology and participating in the cultural
mandate outlined in Genesis 1:27-28.
While completing the final requirements
for their undergraduate degrees, linguistics
students started the semester on the
job. Under the direction and leadership
of Pasquale, professor of linguistics and
inaugural dean of the School of Ministry,
Media & the Arts, students enrolled in
Linguistic Analysis are collaborating with a
missionary couple based in Asia to develop
a needed service for ministry professionals:
a language learning solution with a lexicon
for mission-centric gospel ministry.
It’s cutting-edge work,
but it’s also missional.
— Dr. Michael Pasquale
“I want students to see what God has
prepared them to do in terms of whatever
major or skill set and apply that to impact
our world in multiple ways,” Pasquale said.
According to the Ethnologue, the world
has over 7,000 living languages. Though
popular language learning applications
exist to provide vocabulary for transactional
actions, Cornerstone students are
supplying linguistic data to help pilot
a language learning tool that equips
learners to effectively communicate and
build relationships in Central Asia. The
concept for this new program will leverage
““
Dr. Michael Pasquale, Dean of the
School of Ministry, Media & the Arts
artificial intelligence (AI) to improve
pronunciation feedback to language
learners and to reinforce repetition as part
of their personalized language learning
plans, anticipating the content learners
should prioritize. As a result, the project
will accelerate the timeline for missionaries
working to learn a new language.
“As AI technology develops into a powerful
tool, the humanities can bring together
knowledge from philosophy, history and
languages to ask important questions: Is
this right? Is this true? And how do we
utilize AI in a way that glorifies God, helps
the church and helps our communities?”
Pasquale concluded. “To know that our
partnership is helping missionaries and
cross-cultural workers in multiple areas
and multiple fields throughout Asia is really
exciting.”
THE PULSE OF EXCELLENCE
School of Health, Science & Technology Students Recognized for Novel Research
Exercise science students enrolled in
Cornerstone University’s School of Health,
Science & Technology have uncovered
new findings in kinesiology, the study of
human movement and performance. Six
undergraduates presented their novel
research at the October 2023 Midwest
American College of Sports Medicine
(ACSM) conference in Indianapolis, Ind.,
sponsored by Dr. James Sackett, assistant
professor of kinesiology; Sherry Williams,
associate professor of kinesiology; and Kim
Zainea, associate professor of kinesiology.
The student researchers examined the
effects of a new compression garment on
human performance. While conducting
tests in Cornerstone’s kinesiology lab,
students found that training in the new
compression garment leads to greater
performance when compared to not
training in the garment.
“Our bodies are a gift from God, and it is
our duty to glorify and honor Him in all
that we do, especially as it pertains to the
movement, workings, and design of the
human body,” Sackett stated. “This requires
a keen understanding of how the human
body works at rest and during exercise so
that we can care for it and ultimately serve
Him and others.”
Two students accepted awards at the
regional event in recognition of their
outstanding contributions to the field of
sports medicine. Jaye Fuller (’26) won the
best undergraduate research presentation
award, and Joshua Mayne (’24) won the
most outstanding undergraduate research
project award.
For students who are passionate about
helping individuals experience health and
and attendance at scientific conferences
grows invaluable communication skills and
professional network connections.
