In response to ‘Regarding
false environmental
predictions’
Don’t waste time dreaming about your
retirement years. Climate change may
doom us all. Some don’t believe that but is
it any wonder West Newsmagazine readers
got that impression scanning letters in the
Nov. 13 edition?
Peter Raven suggests people are the
problem. There are too many of us. A million
human beings were around 11,000
years ago and today earth is home to 7.7
billion. That’s a scientific analysis. Once
in our history many embraced a biblical
point of view. God told the first couple to
“be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth
and subdue it.”
Later He commanded Noah, “Populate
the earth abundantly.”
Of course, if one doesn’t accept the truth
of Creation he or she might worry about
the dilemma of a congested globe. We’re
consuming too much food and heating the
planet dangerously, almost by two degrees
Fahrenheit, Raven informs us. Atmospheric
warming has been understood for
130 years, we’re told. Yet in the middle
of the previous century scientists feared a
global freeze!
The Cato Institute reminds us biologist
Paul Ehrlich said 50 years ago that the collapse
of civilization “within decades was a
near certainty.”
His 1968 best seller “The Population
Bomb” shouted about reproduction gone
berserk.
Since he scared the masses, population
doubled. Yet annual famine deaths have
declined by millions.
Guess what? There’s hope at the end of
the population tunnel. Each subsequent billion
will take longer to achieve, according
to RealClearScience, until growth eventually
plateaus at around 9 billion by 2050.
Birth rates are falling around the world.
Dale Markley stakes his belief on confidence
in big government and suspicion
of conservatism. He says 13 federal agencies
concluded that human-caused climate
change is real. He mentions no private scientific
findings. He quotes no independent
studies.
Finally, Bryce Frazier adds his criticism
to climate observations by Walter Williams
[Nov. 13].
“I have observed and written a letter
myself, addressing Mr. Williams’ decidedly
right-wing view of the world.”
So, the revelation that climate change
is often more about wealth redistribution
than temperature fluctuation is not to be
taken seriously.
Mr. Frazier thinks readers deserve “a
modicum of impartiality.” He means he’d
like to see more leftist dogma. My suggestion:
Read the New York Times, Washington
Post, The Atlantic, Time, New Republic,
Huffington Post or twelve dozen other
journals. Plenty are out there. Spare us this
one newsmagazine.

Regarding Walter Williams
Walter E. Williams’ intellectual gymnastics
are impressive. In his last article “U.S.
in moral decline” [Nov. 6], Mr. Williams
claims the mantle of victimhood for the
most privileged and powerful in America.
See, since the rich may not want to pay
taxes, the fact that they have to do so basically
means that they are slaves.
This ridiculous conclusion presumes the
rich A) have no obligation to contribute
to society beyond their own whims and
B) the rich don’t benefit from government
spending. Of course, the rich benefit the
most from indirect [interstates only benefit
people who own cars] and direct [bank
bailouts] government largesse. For Mr.
Williams, routine government taxing and
spending is a show of moral decline.
Mr. Williams also lavishes praise on
Attorney General William Barr’s speech
claiming moral decline is caused by people
advocating for constitutionally mandated
separation of church and state. Quite
frankly, anyone looking to the Trump
administration for moral guidance should
have their head examined. Even a dedicated
Trumpist is likely to squirm if asked
to present the President as an example of
moral character to children.
As I have said before, Mr. Williams is a
bad faith actor who should not be given a
platform.

CORRECTION: In the news brief title
“Mayor disputes sales tax rumors” in the
Nov. 13 issue of West Newsmagazine, it
was falsely stated that Mayor Bob Nation
was in attendance for the Nov. 4 City Council
meeting. Chesterfield councilmember
Barbara McGuiness was also incorrectly
misquoted as saying “The mayor was late,
he missed the entire discussion” while her
actual statement was “[Councilmember
Ben Keathley] was late, he missed the
entire discussion.” West Newsmagazine
regrets this error.
