My dadran a successful Lewes taxi firm, and had alwaysbeen self-employed, so I think I inherited thatethos. I’ve been doing this all my life. I startedthe Dance Academy dance classes at MallingCommunity Centre (I grew up in Malling; myparents live there still). Then I took a lease atSt John’s Ambulance in Timberyard Lane; thenNorth Street. Everywhere I went the building Iwas working in was taken over and redeveloped!So it’s wonderful to have finally found apermanent home here in Landport. Pippa fromPippa’s Nursery, the Youth Club and us havetogether taken on the mortgage.Community is clearly really important toyou? It is, and mine is a Community InterestCompany – which means not for profit, likea charity, but with the aim of serving thecommunity. I’ve lived in Landport for 18years: to be able to use a building in my owncommunity for my own community sits reallynicely. We do exceptionally well at creatingcommunity in Landport, and at low cost. Butwe’re working very hard to do this. Last summerholiday, between us we offered two weeks of freechildren’s clubs for all ages, thanks to the PellsPool Fund. There were 30 kids here a day. Ourdoors are open every day now, and the kids arefree to join in whatever way is right for them. It’stheir space. Some of them are very serious aboutdance – I think I’ve just got my sixth studentgoing to do a degree in it. But people join inas much or as little as they want. We makedance affordable to many families who mightnot otherwise be able to access it. Two of myteachers are ex-students. And I’ve also startedteaching second generations of some familiesnow! We all support each other, and we join inas families (I’ve got four kids myself, includingbaby Theo). When the Pells School closed, forinstance, that was tough on many children. Butthey have a place to come to that remains theirown while other things change.Have you lived in Lewes your whole life?All but six months, when I moved out to SouthHeighton. But I couldn’t settle! I just came backto Lewes every day. I love it. Because it’s myhome. Because of the community, and the town’suniqueness. It’s not too commercialised, andeveryone can be themselves. And that’s what Iwant to build here: a community where everyonefits in. Dance was always important to mebecause I felt free, and free to be myself. I starteddancing when I was eight, but it took a lot ofcommitment from my parents, and I had to travelto Newhaven five days a week. Lewes DanceAcademy is everything to me.
