ChesterfieldFC Community Trust came up with the gamein 2011 as part of a fitness drive for the over 50sbut it was a Barclays Bank ad featuring Roy andhis pals playing on a 3G pitch which really gotthe ball rolling.Steve Rich, then 52, saw the ad and launched theWFU website. Then, Manchester City starteda Walking Football team, Glasgow Rangersfollowed, and now there are tournaments in theUK and around the globe. There’s even beenan international, England v Italy, at the Amex inMay 2018. England won 2-0.The rules are simple: no running, no physicalcontact, no tackling from behind, no overheadheight. Kick-ins, corners, and penalties, five, six,or seven-a-side. That’s about it. It’s a strippeddownversion of the game, with the emphasis onclose control and passing.There’s quite a bit of Walking Football in Sussex,but not too much when it comes to womenwho want to play each other. The founding ofLewes FC Women’s Walking Football Teamis set to change this. On a crisp cold winter’sday I went to meet a few of the players, talk tothem about how they got into the game, theircampaign to attract more players, and how theylanded the support of‘Equality FC.’Julie Busfield is skipperof the team. “I startedwhen I was at primaryschool – boys came andknocked because I wasa decent player. But asI grew older it becameclear that it wasn’t acceptableto play football.I was stopped from playing. Then, when I was58, I heard about Walking Football. So I’veplayed with a Brighton mixed team but when Iwas looking for anything for women there wasnothing at all in Sussex.”I also chat with Tash Fairbanks, who tells me shewent to the Brighton Dome earlier this year andheard Karen Dobres, a Director of Lewes FC,talk about the Club’s equal pay policy. “I askedher if there was a Women’s Walking FootballTeam. She gave me Charlie Dobres’ contactdetails and Julie got in touch.”“The Club has given us a free pitch, free kit andevery encouragement,” says Julie. Yes, Charliesays; the club was delighted to help. “They representthe terrible injustice that has been done towomen who love football, who just wanted andcontinue to want to play. I’m so happy we canhelp them get back on the pitch.”The team’s keen to recruit new players now:“any woman over 40, experience or no experience,it doesn’t matter”, says Julie.
