Back in Ancient Rome they had a festival –Saturnalia – which saw their society turn upsidedown for a week each December. It seems Saturnalia’straditions of chaos and mayhem are now thedaily norm for us Brits but, as we career towardsChristmas, we have another thing in common withSaturnalia. We will soon be paying our respects tothe Holly tree.Holly has been celebrated in many traditionsover the centuries because as a native evergreenits vibrancy in the dead of winter could easily bemistaken for immortality. Holly was the sacredtree of Saturn the Roman God of agriculture. Inpagan tradition the Holly King ruled over theOak King from Midsummer to Midwinter. Hollywas easily adopted by Christians who saw manylinks between the tree and the life of Christ. TodayHolly remains a centrepiece of our Christmasdecorations, cards and cakes.Each Holly tree is either male or female. Whileboth produce delicate white flowers in May it’sonly the female Holly that bears a berry as red asany blood. When these berries are produced inprofusion it’s taken to be a sign of an oncominghard winter although in reality it’s the outcome ofa successful spring. Holly’s prickles provide protectionfor nesting birds, their flower buds are foodfor the Holly Blue butterfly’s caterpillar and theirripe berries are essential for thrushes.If you’re after a tree filled with folklore then, Hollymust take a bow. So if you’re planning to deckyour halls with boughs of the stuff this Christmashere’s a quick user guide. First off NEVER cutdown a Holly tree – that’s guaranteed bad luck, asuperstition which has spared many Holly treesfrom the woodsman’s axe. And make sure you leaveHolly trees in your hedgerows to prevent witchesfrom running along the top. If you bring Hollyinto your home at Christmas it’ll help protect youfrom those pesky festive faeries. Only female Hollyleaves under your pillow will allow you to predictyour future in your dreams. Oh, and don’t forgetto get rid of your Holly decorations before TwelfthNight (but don’t burn them, that’s bad luck too).Holly trees will protect you against lightningstrikes (I’m not sure if this has been scientificallyproven so don’t blame me if you still get zapped).And don’t eat the berries, they’re poisonous, but ifyou have smallpox you can drink an infusion madefrom the leaves.Stick to those rules folks and you’ll have a peacefulChristmas. Me? I’ve had enough of the state ofthe world today.
