ON THIS MONTH: MUSICThomas McCarthyTraveller, singer, storytellerPhoto by Amy Bateman“As soon as youcould attach a portableTV to a carbattery, it died outfor Traveller people.Literally withinmonths, the songswere forgotten.”Thomas McCarthycomes from a familyof Travellers, basedin Birr, in central Ireland, who kept up the traditionof singing traditional songs, when othersaround them were stopping.“Our people frowned upon the television,” hetells me, down the phone from his Londonhome. “They’d call it a conversation killer. Ittook people’s attention away from the songs, andthe stories.”People used to look forward to the Travellerscoming to town, so they could hear their songs,he tells me. “But then Elvis happened, and theBeatles, and if a Traveller started singing a song ina pub, they’d say ‘we don’t want to hear that sortof song, we’ve got a jukebox, now.’”McCarthy remembers singing songs himself,from the age of five, and writing his own from theage of 13. “We’d sing round campfires outside thecaravans,” he said. “That’s what we did. That andthe stories. My grandfather Johnny told storiesthat would last two weeks. His three brotherswere all singers, and songwriters.”Around the turn of the millennium, he decided tostart ‘collecting’ songs, from his grandfather, fromhis mother, from his uncles and aunties. “It waslucky I had the good sense to do that. If I hadn’t,those songs would have been forgotten by now.”Most of the songswere unique to hisextended family,others were more traditional.Some werehundreds of years old.“I collected 12 or 13hundred,” he says. “Ican sing two or threehundred of those offthe top of my head.The rest of them I have written down.”He uses a ‘warbling’ technique, taught to him byhis mother, involving a movement of tone withinthe longer notes. “It used to be common in Irishsinging, but has become a lost art.”He’s only been singing as a public performersince 2008. “I was singing at a wedding and ayoung fellow came up to me and he said ‘haveyou ever been to Cecil Sharp House? [London’sfolk art centre]. I went along there for a singaroundon a Tuesday night. I never knew therewas so much interest in folk singing.”After that, the invitations started coming. Nowhe regularly performs in folk clubs and festivalsround the country, and round Ireland, too. Hehas recorded three albums, and there are plentymore to come.So are there, I ask, any younger McCarthys followingthe tradition?
