Plague was in a Charteris Bay house which caught fire late on Monday afternoon. The occupants were not home. Another Charteris Bay resident was heading into the city and saw smoke. Like any good citizen he went in to investigate. No-one was inside but a cat was. He duly picked it up and took it from the property which was now starting to burn quickly and dialled 111. And the rescuer, who did not want to be named, has a message about those fire prevention ads on TV: “I tell you it’s an absolute heads-up for anybody about fires. Wednesday November 27 2019 News Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz BAY HARBOUR PAGE 3 Disappointment at lack of action on estuary shellfish limits • By Jess Gibson A GROUP concerned with Avon Heathcote Estuary’s daily shellfish limit are disappointed it can not be lowered for at least a year. Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust chairman Kit Doudney wrote to Ministry for Primary Industries requesting the daily recreational limit be lowered from 150 to 25 per person. The trust agreed last Wednesday a reduction would become its short term goal for protecting the estuary while it worked out a way to enforce a harvesting ban. However, MPI director of fisheries management Stuart Anderson said it would take a minimum of one year to lower the recreational daily limits in the estuary. “The process would include formal consultation and the government’s approval of any changes,” he said. Mr Anderson said signs will be erected in the estuary enforcing the limit of 150 in the next couple of months as there is currently nothing stating the rules. Mr Doudney said signs being put in at the estuary was a “positive” but he was sceptical of how long they would last, as the last set disappeared. Fisheries officers regularly patrol the estuary to ensure harvesting is lawful. Penalties are in place for non-compliance.
