www.fearnsofcarlton.co.uk

The
Christmas
Present Tale
We have never been an extravagant present
giving family and every year I dread the whole
present buying shenanigans. I know I am a
miserable old Grinch but I can’t help it, along
with an aversion to cleaning, it’s genetic...
My mum prides herself on sourcing unusual
and often, it has to be said, strange gifts. As
a supporter of many a worthy cause she uses
their Christmas catalogues for inspiration.
Inevitably one of us will end up with a CD of
whale mating calls (usually Gary, thankfully!)
or a microwavable pillow stuffed with cherry
pips (yes that really was a thing).
Another recent corker (pun intended) was
a wine tasting evening for four (also given
to Gary). It sounded great. Free wine and
the promise of a complimentary bottle at the
end of the night. We persuaded two mates
(who don’t have naughty dogs) to host the
evening. I have to say it was one of the
most cringe worthy nights ever. Mr Vino
turned up with his cool box and proceeded
to give us dolls house sized samples whilst
generously topping his own glass up. At the
end of the evening he asked us for our order.
Tumbleweed blew across the fl oor... to fill the
crashing silence I foolishly asked how much
for a bottle...the cheapest was about £19,
minimum order of 12!!! Cue more tumbleweed
and stifl ed giggling. Then Mr Vino turned
nasty as he was ushered out by my poor
friend who hasn’t invited us back since.
Every year there are always smellies and
pants. I usually get a gift set of talc and
soap (does anyone even use these toiletries
anymore?). To make matters worse it is
usually lavender scented. Not being funny
but I’m not 90 yet (although by the end of
Christmas I usually look and feel it). And then
we get to the comedy pants (Gary again)...
Always hilariously over-sized and usually
with some super hero theme. However, when
these start to be worn on a daily basis (as
pointed out by youngest son), they are no
longer remotely funny and you know it’s time
for a trip to M&S.
Once the presents are purchased they must
be wrapped. Sitting cross legged on the
bedroom fl oor surrounded by paper, sellotape
and weirdly shaped gifts (why do I do that?)
I take a deep breath and begin, consuming
at least one chocolate orange in the process
(sorry dad, I’ll get you another one). Which
reminds me, a couple of years ago my dad
really excelled himself by wrapping presents
up in tin foil as he couldn’t be arsed to get
wrapping paper...and you wonder where I get
it from!
I will end on a note about cards. Why buy
Christmas cards for your nearest and dearest
when you can use the British Red Cross
freebies that come through the post? Yes
boys, I know...
I hope you all get what you wish for (and
plenty besides).
Merry Christmas.
It’s Christmas time. . .
Hey, Christmas is here! Line up the Bing Crosby
albums on the gramophone and stick a copy of
It’s A Wonderful Life in the VHS player. Let’s
just be really clear before we get stuck in, this is not
going to be an article where I wax lyrical pining for the
good old days when Christmas was much better than
it is nowadays. Quite the opposite in fact, Christmas
today is great albeit a bit different to when I was a lad.
And just so we all remain friends Christmas in my
house doesn’t start until Bing Crosby goes on the Spotify
playlist and It’s A Wonderful Life gets a dusted off DVD
case (yes, I still own DVD’s). So what’s changed then?
Obviously the advent of being married with children
means that I get to have new traditions. Some of these
are shaped by my own upbringing, others by my wife’s,
and the rest we’ve made up ourselves with the kids.
When I was a lad we had a very clear structure to the
day. We’d wake up to stockings from Santa which would
be opened before the sun rose. Once we’d all eaten our
chocolate oranges we’d head downstairs for breakfast
and with that tucked away we’d help mum prepare
lunch. With this set we’d get dressed and head to church
for the Christmas Day service. Having completed the
formalities we’d return home to our set familial tasks.
My job, as the youngest, was to take the presents from
under the tree and sort them into piles for the various
family members. Then, the dinner…
Our Christmas dinner had all the trimmings, nothing
unusual there. A hearty family feast was had by all.
After our lunch we’d have to clear back and do the
dishes. Then, with that behind us the coffee and biscuits
would come out and we’d finally start to unwrap the
presents. At 3pm precisely we’d have to pause whatever
we were doing and watch the Queen’s speech. With that
done it was time to tune into the big Christmas movie
(usually James Bond) and we’d sit back and finally let
our lunch digest.
But that wasn’t the end of it, come 5 o’clock the tea
trolley would be wheeled in with a full cheeseboard,
a freshly cooked ham and an assortment of crackers.
Don’t mind if I do thanks! And yes, I’ll have a glass of
red wine while I’m at it.
At this point, those of us that were still awake would
start bartering for who got to choose the evening movie.
We’d rarely agree on what to watch, but somehow a
successful negotiation would take place that could
teach the UN a thing or two and at least a couple of
us would be happy. At some point on this journey the
sherry would get opened and after half a small glass
mum would probably be tipsy and start doing Billy
Connelly impressions.
And then, eventually, we’d head off to bed ready to start
again on Boxing Day when we either visited relatives or
they came to us and we started all over again.
Nowadays we don’t do half of this, for one thing we
don’t even eat turkey (the kids just don’t like it). But we
have created our own traditions and the big day has a
rhythm that is unique to us and takes the best bits of
what both my wife and I value. Whilst neither of us are
religious we view this time of year as an opportunity to
celebrate our family and friends and not take any of it
for granted.
So happy Christmas to you all. I hope you get everything
you want, and thanks for reading my articles. I hope
they’ve made you laugh a little this year.
*Just to address the elephant in the room, I am well aware
that the Christmas I described in this article may be the
most middle class thing I’ve ever written. I’m not even
going to apologise for it. If you need me I’ll be in the east
wing admiring the view.
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children
who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me
to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of
parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!
out their new venue on a Friday night and after only being
open eleven weeks the place is buzzing. It has the feel of
a pub that has been open for years and everyone looks at
home.
For starters we chose the Leek & Potato Soup, Chive Crème
was complimented beautifully with the sides. Vegetable
Pot ‘Pie’, Creamed Cabbage, Swede, Beetroot, Goats
Cheese, Mash & Crispy Onions £12.95 wow, an amazing
combination of flavours and textures, who would have
thought beetroot and goats cheese would go so well?
Nottingham, NG12 1AW
Potato, Koffman Cabbage, Squash Puree, Duck Sauce
£16.95, perfectly crispy on the outside and tasty on the
Next came the hardest decision of the night - the desserts.
pure heaven on a plate. Peanut Butter Cheesecake,
Banana Caramel, Brandy Snap, Chocolate Sorbet £6.95,
an absolute treat for the taste buds. Sticky Toffee Pudding,
perfect winter warmer and Baked Apple Crumble Tart,
Toasted Oats, Tonka Bean £6.95, a twist on an English
classic that paid dividends.
Thankfully we didn’t need rolling out of the door, even
after eating every morsal on the plate, as the portion sizes
were perfect. We had a wonderful evening in every way
and will be back, the sooner the better.
Party Favourites
As the Christmas party season approaches
I think it’s always handy to have a few dishes
up your sleeve that you can serve as and when
people pop round.
The recipe for coronation chicken was handed
down to me from my mum. I remember
parties where it would be the star of the show.
Originally created in 1953 by Rosemary Hume
and Constance Spry for the coronation of
Elizabeth II, coronation chicken is still as popular
today. Although there are hundreds of diff erent
interpretations of this dish, the recipe I have
shared is pretty close to the original. I also love
this chicken served in wraps or with jacket
potatoes.
Talking of which, potatoes are cheap and very
adaptable. Cook a few jacket spuds and before
you know it you have a couple of great party
dishes. Again these are very fl exible and you
can add whatever takes your fancy. Let your
imagination run wild and have some fun!
Have a great Christmas with plenty of
delicious food and drink!
Ali Wale

Granny Annie’s
Coronation Chicken
Small onion – chopped
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tsp garam masala
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
5 tbsp red wine
2 tbsp tomato puree
Juice and rind of 1 x lemon
2 tbsp apricot jam
Mayonnaise
Plain yoghurt or crème fraiche
Cooked chicken
In a small saucepan, gently cook the
onion for 10 mins until soft. Add the
spices and cook for 30 secs. Add the
red wine, tomato puree, lemon rind
and juice. Simmer gently for 10 mins.
Add the apricot jam and leave to cool.
Once cool, strain through a sieve into
a bowl. This is your concentrated
coronation sauce. Now, depending on
how much chicken you have, mix the
concentrated sauce with mayo, stir in
the chicken and serve in lettuce leaves.
As a rough guide, for 300g cooked
shredded chicken, use 2 tbsp mayo,
2tbs yoghurt or crème fraiche and mix
in 1-2 tbsp coronation sauce. Taste
as you go. There is enough sauce to
dress a whole poached and shredded
chicken. For a big party, you could
serve the chicken spread out on a big
serving platter. That’s how I remember
my mum doing it.
** The concentrated sauce can also be
frozen.
Crispy Potato Skins
6 x small baking potatoes
Olive oil
50g grated cheese
2 tbsp soured cream
1 x spring onion – fi nely chopped
Salt and pepper
Heat oven to 200°C. Pierce the spuds
with a skewer. Rub with olive oil. Bake
in oven until soft (about 1 hour). Remove
from oven and allow to cool enough to
handle. Half and carefully scoop out
most of the potato (leave a thin layer).
Increase the oven to 250°C, brush the
potato skins inside and out with more
olive oil, sprinkle with salt and place
on a baking sheet. Bake for 10 mins,
then fl ip over and bake for another 10
mins. Remove from oven, sprinkle with
grated cheese and return to the oven
for 2 minutes. Remove and allow to cool
slightly, then spoon in some sour cream
and sprinkle with chopped spring onion.
Makes 12.
Other fi lling ideas: cheese, crispy bacon
and half a cherry tomato; cheese, chorizo
and sour cream; Cheese, avocado and
crispy bacon
Potato Croquettes
Mashed potato (from the previous
recipe)
Butter
50g grated cheese
50g cooked ham – fi nely chopped
1 tbsp fl our
1 egg
2 or 3 tbsp breadcrumbs (I used panko)
Salt & pepper
Paprika (optional)
Olive oil
In a bowl mash the potato with a knob
of butter, the cheese and ham. Season
to taste and chill in the fridge for at
least 30 mins. The longer you leave
the potato the easier it is to handle.
Get 3 shallow bowls, put the fl our in
one, beaten egg in another and the
breadcrumbs in the third (add a tsp of
paprika if you want a bit more colour
and fl avour). Using your hands shape
small amounts of the potato into small
sausage shapes (about half a fi nger in
length). Roll in the fl our, then the egg
and then cover in the breadcrumbs.
Place on a baking sheet, chill in fridge
for 30 mins. This should help them
keep their shape when baking. When
ready to bake, spray with olive oil (I
used a 1 cal spray). Bake at 200°C
for 20 mins until golden brown. Makes
about 15 depending on size.
Other fi lling ideas: two cheese, cheese
and mushroom, tuna and cheese

Tanya About Town
C
hristmas is the most wonderful
time of the year for us foodies.
From a unique way to eat on the
move to traditional festive fayre, there's
something to tempt the tastebuds
of everyone in Nottinghamshire this
season, so I've come up with some
tasty experiences yule love!
For something really family friendly,
or for big kids (like me), Ruddington
Heritage Centre is offering the closest
thing locally to the Polar Express.
I don't know if you'll get 'hot, hot,
hot chocolate' on your journey, but
seasonal refreshments are promised
on the magical Santa train which
runs every weekend from the end of
November. You'll even get a visit from
the big fella himself!
In the heart of Nottingham is the
beautiful Winter Wonderland in the
Market Square (14 Nov - 31 Dec).
Search for the perfect gift from the
traditional, Bavarian-style stalls, pick
up delicious homemade and artisan
cheeses, chutneys and chocolates. I
have a tradition now of taking a break
from shopping to enjoy a mulled wine
or hot chocolate with Baileys at the
unique Helter Skelter Bar but you can
also make a full evening of it at the
Sur le Piste, the UK’s biggest mobile
ice bar.
Relax and be entertained as you
enjoy a mince pie and chocolates at a
different experience at The Malt Cross
(7/8 Dec). Come along to an evening
of tales and stories that capture the
imagination and the pure spirit of
Christmas.
Expect a spectacular evening of
delights, fine dining, dancing and
entertainment at the Jerry Green
Christmas Ball at the Portland College
(6 Dec). What's more you can party
the night away knowing that the profits
raised on the evening will be going to
help rescue dogs, who are currently
waiting for their forever homes.
Enjoy a festive evening of Jazz with
Campbell Bass and a 3-course set
Christmas dinner at Harts Restaurant
(11 Dec). The venue is also open for
a 5 course Christmas luncheon on
Christmas Day if you fancy taking the
hassle out of Christmas dinner, or for
Christmas dinner with a difference you
could try the All You Can Eat Jamaican
& European Food Buffet on Christmas
Day at The Cricketers in Beeston.
Having visitors over the festive
season? Point them in the direction
of the Holiday Inn at Castle Marina.
From 18th November they will be
offering their festive menu or tuck into
a slice of Christmas cheer with their
Afternoon Tea with a festive twist.
Another festive Afternoon Tea that
looks tempting is at The Lace Market
Hotel with their indulgent offering. I
love pouring through Christmas menus
and most restaurants in the city will
be offering one, some definitely worth
checking out are Rev De Cuba, All
Bar One, Bistrot Pierre, Pieminister,
Memsaab, World Service, Oaks and
if you're fed up of trying to please
everyone then take them to Cosmo
World Buffet with over 150 different
dishes on the menu.
Of course there are always plenty of
Christmas fairs to visit in the region
where you can pick up some artisan
goodies and sample some seasonal
favourites.
The Tailors Arms in Wilford has a
Christmas Market (30 Nov). Expect
pop-up stalls, Christmas carols,
mince pies, mulled wine and plenty
of Christmas sparkle. Sherwood
Christmas Market is also worth a visit
(Dec 14).
*Always check with the venue ahead and
book if necessary. There may be a cost or
entrance fee unless stated otherwise'

Inspirational music
event held at Nottingham
emmanuel school
by Nottingham Emmanuel School
west bridgford school
awarded prestigious
accolade again!
by St Edmond Campion School
The Nottingham Emmanuel School in West
Bridgford were hosts to a visit by the National
Youth Orchestra (NYO) on their tour to bring
inspirational music to UK schools.
Students participated in workshops demonstrating
each of the musical instruments and their roles in
the orchestra. The day culminated in a spectacular
performance of inspiring music.
The school were also joined by students from across
Archway Learning Trust to share in the experience.
Nottingham Emmanuel School student Medhi Moad
Yallas (age 11) said the experience has inspired
him to pursue making his own music. “I have really
enjoyed it! I used to play the guitar and I listen to a
lot of music at home, mainly rock. I think I will carry
on with my guitar now definitely. I have really enjoyed
listening to the musicians, they are really good!”
Visiting with his school, Bluecoat Wollaton Academy,
was Head Boy, Reuben Hallsworth-Woods (Year 10).
Reuben, who plays the trumpet, has since gone on to
join various orchestras including NYO and says his
enjoyment of playing has increased over the years. “I
think this event is a good way of opening up students
to the different types of music and to discover that
orchestras don’t just play classical music.
“I would recommend that students take up an
instrument, to find out what they like, or don’t like! The
music you can produce, not to mention the events you
can take part in, is really sensational!”
St Edmund Campion School has been reaccredited
the British Council’s International
School Award for its flourishing partnerships and
links with schools across the world.
Global dimension and international learning are key to
the fundamentals of St Edmund Campion School and
are a vital part of the school’s ethos. Through working
on joint projects with partner schools and adding
international elements to lessons, pupils and teachers
are given a fresh perspective on the world and their
place within it.
The school’s varied international work includes
an annual trip to Berlin with Year 5 children, which
includes a visit to their German partner school. This
is as well as regular joint projects with their partner
school in France and in-depth work in the classroom
on a variety of world faiths.
The school also teaches French from Year 1 upwards
and introduces German in upper Key Stage 2.
Upon hearing the news that St Edmund Campion
School had received the award, Daniela Wilks,
language teacher and international co-ordinator
said: “We are extremely proud of our status as an
International School. This award celebrates our
school’s vast efforts to include an international
dimension across our curriculum, which allows our
pupils to become aware of the great wide world
outside their own immediate experiences and
geographical area.”
SETTING YOU UP
TO WIN IN 2020
COACH ANDY HERE...
2020… looks amazing right. Two round numbers
together, clean, even looking numbers. There’s
just something very satisfying about looking at this
number.
Its also a GREAT tempo number to train too. Two
second extension and a two second contraction with
no pauses… Now you know how to read tempo,
allow me to go a little deeper as this will be our last
interaction in 2019.
As we reach the end of the year, are you still saying;
I’ll start Monday, I’ll start January???
When will it be too late? 10 years down the line will
you still be saying the same thing? Wishing you’d
made the start in 2020?
Everyday we get to choose what we do; we aren’t
forced to make bad diet choices or choose the sofa
rather than the gym; we simply make these decisions
and excuse ourselves of our actions.
WAKE UP CALL
I’m here to help you, support you and allow you to
unlock yourself from the actions you’ve been taking.
I always feel there is never enough space to really
give you the good stuff within these articles which is
why I’ve committed to being everywhere you need
me in 2020.
• The Fit Flow Radio podcast
• Youtube
• Facebook Group, The Fit Flow Perspective
• Here in these NG articles
• And as always on Instagram @strength.physique
So why am I giving you all this access, information
and support? Because life is short, much shorter
than we realise. I want you to live your life to its
fullest potential with a healthy body and a healthy
mind. To really understand what you can achieve for
yourself with a little action and intention.
MY 2020 GUIDE
Don’t do resolutions, please!!
Instead of a resolution I encourage you to do this
simple exercise:
Set three intentions and write out three actions
needed for each intention and then have this
everywhere. On your phone, in the cupboard…
EVERYWHERE.
Wouldn’t it be great to say the year 2020 was
when I changed my entire future. That one article
encouraged me to take action instead of create
reaction.
You’ve got all the places listed on the left to find the
information you’ll need to help change your life, so
let my last message of 2019 be:
MAKE 2020 THE BEGINNING OF YOUR FUTURE!
In loving memory of Henry Bull
The Kia e-Niro First Edition:
Happy People
The very clever Kia e-Niro is
pointing the way towards the
immediate future of personal and
private transportation. But let us
not get ahead of ourselves here
as this is not a review of the e-Niro
just yet, rather a rumination
regarding the practicality of
electric vehicle travel right here
and right now.
TIP 1
Before going anywhere you
absolutely must download the
fantastic Zap-Map app which is
compatible with both Android
and IOS and is packed full of
invaluable features. Without going
into detail, you input your own EV
information and then have access
to a UK-wide charging point map
(constantly updated) currently
showing over 6,000 charging
locations and 19,000 connectors.
There’s also a superb route
planning feature that you can
customise to your own required
specifications. Believe me when
I say that this superb app helps
extinguish any doubts regarding
range anxiety.
TIP 2
Familiarise yourself with the type of
charger you need to find on the
journey so that you can access
maximum range for the time spent
charging. Turns out they’re not all
the same... Checkout the What
Car? EV charging guide online and
look for rapid chargers rather than
just fast on Zap Map.
TIP 3
Take a good look next time you
see an EV charge point at the
services. They all look the same
don’t they? Now look closely at
the charging cables available
and you’ll notice that some have
a Type 2 charger (capable of
charging from 7 kW to 22 kW, fully
charging an EV in 3-4 hours) on one
side and a Chademo on the other
and yet others have a CCS (rapid
DC units which are at least 50 kW
and will charge the majority of EVs
to 80% in around 30-60 minutes)
and Chademo charger. Which to
choose? It’s different for some EVs
(Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi and
Tesla) but generally and from my
own experience with the Kia, it’s
the CCS type charger that you
need when looking to maximise
recharging.
TIP 4
Don’t waste time charging twice
at a charge point (one 45 min
charge followed straight away by
another) trying to get the battery
up to 100%, as it takes longer than
just finding another charge point as
and when you need it. Most, if not
all, EV manufacturers recommend
that charging to 80% rather than
100% will help extend the real
world lifespan of the EV’s battery
pack. Indeed, Tesla themselves
recommend charging to 100%
only if a longer journey is to be
undertaken. And then there’s the
time it takes to fill the final 20%,
which takes longer to complete
relative to the first 80%. So charge
to 80% and off you go.
TIP 5
Download and register with a
number of the most popular EV
charging apps available on either
IOS or Android allowing yourself
the luxury of choice when it comes
to charging your chosen EV.
You really don’t want to be wasting
time trying to set up the correct
app and payment card on the
journey itself. Try out Zap Map,
ChargePoint, PlugShare, Polar Plus,
Pod-Point and Electric
HIGHWAY.
Whether we like it or not the electric
vehicle revolution is here to stay.
Prices will come down, range will
increase and charging times will
reduce, but until they do, take on
board the advice given and carry
on enjoying the drive. It’s going to
be a electrifying journey.
Where will you go?

WINTER GARDEN
bling
When the flowers have faded, the
autumn leaves have blown away
and stems turned brown, the garden
can look a dreary place; on hold and
waiting for spring to awaken it. But there
is plenty of sparkle and colour to be had as winter
takes hold. Walking round my garden last winter I
found so much to take my eye and delight me.
The fi rst eye-catcher is a big splash of colour from
the stems or berries of a tree or shrub. The fl owering
dogwoods (Cornus alba) are blazing with colour
from their bare stems. My favourites include the
orange “Midwinter Fire”, the deep red “Sibirica”
and even the black “Kesselringii” which looks
stunning with the wan winter sun shining through.
The snakebark maples are spreading their intricately
patterned branches against the winter sky with
red twigs and olive-green and cream trunks.
“George Forrest” has the best coloured twigs and
“Serpentine” the best trunk pattern. The trunks of
Himalayan birch (Betula jackmontii) is white like
bleached bones against the shadows. Another
favourite is the trunk of the Tibetan cherry (Prunus
serrula) whose dark red bark looks polished to mirror
fi nish and is fi lled with swirling patterns of colour.
Shrubs and trees are still covered with berries.
My favourite of all is holly with all its Christmas
associations and memories. The redwings will soon
fl y in from Scandinavia and strip the trees of this
winter feast. The fi rethorns (Pyracantha) are living
up to their name: the yellow-berried ones haven’t
been stripped yet and the stems of Cotoneaster
horizontalis are fi rmly vertical, splayed out against a
fence and studded with small red berries.
Evergreen shrubs and plants add some colour
through the winter, particularly the showy Heucheras
like “Caramel”, “Blackberry Jam” or “Geisha Fan”.
On a frosty morning the leaves are coated and
edged with ice and look like candied fruits.
Frost, ice and dew make the garden sparkle. Frozen
droplets hang, suspended from the wheaten seed
heads of giant oats (Stipa gigantea) and glisten
on the heads of feather grasses (Miscanthus and
Calamagrostis), shining brightly in the low sun.
Evergreen spurges (Euphorbia) become sprinkled
with a diamond-dust of dew and ice and this
will cause them to bow their heads as it melts,
recovering their pose when the weather warms up.
The crinkly leaves of the sun roses (Cistus) are edged
with frost and even the watering can and rabbit-wire
fences are transformed into sculptural shapes by the
frost.
The dead-stems of herbaceous plants are dusted with
frost and seemingly shining in the light. My favourites
are Turkish sage (Phlomis russeliana) with pepper pot
seed heads; sea holly (Eryngium) draped with silver
strings of frosted spider web; and the dead-heads
of conefl owers (Rudbeckia) like silver-edged spears
pointing to the sky.
Winter may seem long and cold, but there’s always
some bling to brighten the short days.
Get Cosy
this Christmas...
With Christmas around the corner,
now is a good time to think about
getting your home ready for winter.
No-one wants to be sitting down for
Christmas dinner without any heating
or hot water.
So what can you do to make your
home warm and cosy at Christmas?
BOILER & CENTRAL
HEATING
If your boiler hasn’t been serviced
regularly then now could be the
time to start. British Gas and many
other energy companies offer a
Homecare package that you can opt
to pay for monthly. Many plumbers
also offer a boiler service for about
£60. It’s worth shopping around and
seeing what your options are.
Currently, the big energy providers
are offering to replace your broken
or faulty boiler with a brand-new
energy-efficient one. You don’t
need to be on benefits to access
this money. You will need to pay
a contribution of £240. Be quick
though before all of the grant money
runs out!
DRAUGHTS
They are one of those annoying
things that can really have a
noticeable effect on the temperature
inside your house. If you have any
gaps in windows, doors, floors and
other junctions, it’s a good idea
to get them filled. Depending on
where they are, you can either do
this yourself or get a handyperson in
to do this for you.
Sausage dog draught excluders
are also a cheap option for doors.
Lining curtains and drawing them
in the evenings will also help keep
that precious heat in.
CHIMNEYS
Is your chimney open? If you don’t
use a fire then you could be losing a
lot of heat up the chimney. You can
buy a chimney balloon for £15 from
DIY shops. There is also a product
called Chimney Sheep which is a
breathable insulation. Remember,
your chimney needs to breathe.
If you block it up completely, you
should still ensure that there is an air
vent. You want to encourage warm
air from the room to be sucked up
through the chimney to get rid
of any moisture and dampness.
Even though your chimney may be
capped at the top, it should still have
a vent to enable air to escape.
FLOORS
Chances are, if your home is not
a new-build, the floor may not
be insulated. Most houses have a
suspended timber floor, which can
be draughty and make your room
feel very cold.
Depending on how easy it is to
access, you might want to consider
insulating this. If you can’t access
underneath the floor, then removing
the existing floor boards will be time
consuming and costly. However, if
you do insulate then fill between
the joists with Kingspan insulation.
Don’t insulate over the joists,
unless you plan to use wood-fibre
insulation. Check that your airvents
around the property are also
clear to ensure adequate airflow.
When timber gets wet, it will start to
rot and/or you may get woodworm.
If you are planning on having a new
carpet and don’t want to pull your
floor boards up (or you have a solid
concrete floor), then you can install
a thin layer of insulation before you
install your carpet and underlay.
Speak to your local carpet shop,
or you can buy a pack at B&Q to
lay yourself. This will help seal the
drafts and give you some respite
from the cold air beneath your feet.
LOFT & CAVITY-WALL
INSULATION
You can lose up to a quarter of the
heat in your home through your
uninsulated loft. By installing at least
270mm of mineral fibre insulation,
you could save up to £300 per year.
The large energy companies offer
an ECO grant (Energy Companies
Obligation Scheme). If you are on
benefits, you may qualify for free
loft and cavity wall insulation.
HELP WITH FUEL COSTS
The government provide a oneoff
tax free Winter Fuel Payment
between £100 and £300. If you are
eligible, you should have received a
letter from the government, telling
you how much you will get. In
very cold weather, you may also be
eligible for Cold Weather Payments.
The large energy companies also
offer a Warm Home Discount.
Check with your energy company to
see if you qualify as you may get a
£140 rebate.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Make sure you do some general
maintenance on your property, or
get someone in to help. So if the
gutter looks leaky, it’s probably
a good idea to get it repaired or
replaced before it gets any worse and
you have water entering your home.
So start on those niggly jobs now,
to make sure you have a cosy
Christmas.
Awarded Best Manufacturer for Safety Features Across the Subaru Range. World-Class Safety As Standard.
t.i.m Motors UK is an family owned business with a fantastic reputation providing sales and service for Subaru, Isuzu and used cars.
There are currently some great deals to be enjoyed if the all-new Forester
e-BOXER is appealing to you. The first self-charging hybrid from Subaru.
You can expect the same 5-star safety, go-anywhere capability, and rugged
reliability that Subaru SUVs are renowned for – with the added benefits
of battery-based power. And all without the need to plug in to recharge.
All-new Forester is built on Subaru’s Global Platform (SGP) – offering
improved all-around safety, better stability and handling, and enhanced
ride quality – and is fitted with a host of new technology as standard.
The Forester’s e-BOXER engine has a longitudinally-mounted horizontallyopposed
configuration. The pistons are placed 180 degrees apart allowing
a lower, flatter engine profile. This gives the powerplant - and therefore
the whole car - a lower centre of gravity. This more balanced weight
distribution gives the Forester exceptional handling and poise.
When you pull away at low speeds in the Forester e-BOXER, the electric
motor alone does the heavy lifting. When you’re driving along, the
e-BOXER petrol engine drives the car – but also recharges the battery.
When you accelerate both the engine and the motor provide power
together. The electric motor power assistance – Motor Assist – is
completely automatic. It works seamlessly with the e-BOXER engine to
give you a cleaner, efficient, and rewarding drive.
Always-on Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive distributes maximum power to
all four wheels all of the time, which means better traction on wet and
slippery roads. The entire drive system, from the e-BOXER engine to the
rear differential, is mounted in a straight symmetrical line, providing
exceptional stability, traction and improved performance and is standard
across the Subaru SUV range.
SUBARU’s Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
moves between a span of gear ratios to provide smooth acceleration
while keeping the engine at its optimal rev range. Lineartronic preserves
momentum that is often lost during gear changes on a manual or
traditional automatic transmission, maintaining traction by continuously
providing power to the wheels at all times.
X-MODE gives you control you can rely on at the push of a button, taking
control of the engine, transmission, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, brakes,
and other components to help you navigate extreme terrain confidently.
When X-MODE is activated, Hill Descent Control automatically maintains a
constant speed when travelling downhill: all you have to do is steer.
A 220mm ground clearance shuns uneven ground – allowing the Forester
e-BOXER to negotiate rocky, rutted tracks or even ford streams with ease.
Forester’s towing capacity of up to 1870kg lets you hitch up a loaded trailer
or caravan whenever the need arises. The towing capacity of Subaru’s
e-BOXER range is one of the best in its class due to the smaller battery
design and its positioning, positively influencing the weight of the vehicle.
HOME ALONE
1990 What makes It’s a Wonderful
Home Alone is hands down my
Life an essential masterpiece?
favourite Christmas film of all time.
Everything about this film is great. Macaualy
Culkin plays Kevin so well at the age of only
eight. He portrays him as a bratty, annoying
kid to start off with but as it goes along, he
manages to add so much heart and humour to
the character that it’s truly impossible to dislike
him. The increasingly bombastic situations
across the film’s runtime are so entertaining
throughout as Kevin single-handedly sets up
homemade traps in an attempt to defend
his house from two criminals. These are also
standouts, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel
Stern who are so hilarious that you love to
hate them. The film has an amazing Christmas
atmosphere aided by the magic original score
by John Williams and it all makes for a true
Christmas classic and an absolute must-watch
family film.
Writer: Sam Leary
IT’S A
WONDERFUL LIFE
If anyone mentions the words ‘Christmas’
and ‘film’ in the same sentence, there’s a
good chance one would
also mention Frank
Capra’s vibrant tale of
George Bailey in it too.
It’s A Wonderful Life has
inspired and sustained
people’s appreciation
of the holiday spirit for
over seven decades
with its stylish 40s swing
and it doesn’t take ‘the
richest man in town’ to see why. James
Stewart gives one of the most endearing
performances in a classic film of a beatendown
good-hearted man sacrificing his
happiness goals for the good of his small
community, only to realise his happiness
was with him all along. Every snappy scene
is full of twisted currents of chemistry, being
sacrificial with some painful breaks of the
working man’s condition when it needs to,
in order to make those shining re-arises
more wonderfully endearing. But where It’s
a Wonderful Life’s heart lies is in its heavily
flawed characters who often cycle through,
connecting and sadly breaking off. Why?
Because they’re only human. And the film’s
timeless message is that that’s not such a
bad thing. And as long as one gives and has
friends, happiness will always be perched
on your shoulder.
singing for dementia
by Charlotte Mendly
Charlotte Mendly is the Musical Director for the
Your Community Choir group. She is a singing
teacher and pianist and runs community choirs in
Nuthall, Ilkeston and Brinsley.
The benefits of singing and dementia have been
regularly highlighted in the media of late. We’ve seen
the members of Nottingham Dementia Choir take
to the stage with Vicky McClure and there seems to
be a buzz around how the arts, specifically singing,
can positively impact dementia sufferers and their
carers.
Singing has the ability to evoke emotion and in turn
memory. We all have those favourite songs that take
us back to momentous moments and as a result it
stimulates recollection of events or periods of time.
Singing engages brain activity and it can stimulate
more mind power than usual. It can bring closeness
between patient and carer through stimulated
emotion and therefore it can inspire affection. It
can also shift mood and agitation through stress
release.
One of the Your Community Choirs visited a local
dementia group, Eastwood Memory Café, and
witnessed the benefits first hand. We carefully
selected our repertoire that we hoped would
spark emotion and enjoyment. Printed lyrics gave
the option for the members to join in. The choir
commented on how rewarding it was and so we
have booked to visit again next year!
Many dementia groups try to incorporate music and
singing into their meetings. To find a local group visit
HELPING YOU GROW YOUR SMALL BUSINESS
COST EFFECTIVE AND
UNCOMPLICATED
EMPLOYMENT ADVICE FOR
SMALL LOCAL BUSINESSES
LadybayHR
Did you know that companies with engaged employees outperform those without by 202%?
Or that disengaged workers have 37% higher absenteeism, 49% more accidents, and 60%
more errors and defects?
As a small business owner, you’ll struggle to justify spending money on non-revenue
generating activities. However, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that businesses with
good employment practices enjoy higher profit margins and productivity than those without.
So having effective employment practices in place will increase your productivity, and
ultimately your profits.
I specialise in helping local companies with 1 to 50 employees protect and grow their business
through sound and pragmatic employment advice and support.
annie chadburn cuts off her
locks for her father
by Maggie’s Nottingham
the disabled artists
network (dan)
by Ravinder Kaur
In October Annie Chadburn took on the brave
challenge of cutting off 13 inches of her hair to
raise an amazing £2k for Maggie’s Nottingham.
When Annie and her family first visited the centre,
like most they were unsure what to expect. “We
weren’t sure what Maggie’s was before our first visit
but it was so friendly and welcoming, a place we felt
we could just pop into for support or advice, when
we needed it. Since our first visit, we have visited
Maggie’s as a family, it’s a great place to meet other
people who know what you’re going through.”
Annie’s dad used the centre for support when he
was first diagnosed; he attended the men’s support
group and also found comfort in one to one support
sessions with our cancer support specialists.
Thanks to people like Annie raising this incredible
amount, we can continue to offer cancer support to
those who need it.
Maggie’s Nottingham offers free emotional and
practical support to anyone with cancer, for as long
as they need it. Cancer affects not only the person
diagnosed, but also their loved ones, so we offer our
support to them too.
If you would like to find out more about us or would
like to raise funds for Maggie’s Nottingham, please
come and see us in the centre, we are based on the
Nottingham City Hospital Grounds, close to gate 3 or
As a war veteran, Nottingham resident, Villayat
‘Wolf’ Sunkmanitu travelled the East Midlands in
2013-2014 with an exhibition ‘Living with PTSD’,
using poetry and photography to show how he
escaped the chains of PTSD.
During the exhibition he met many civilians and
veterans alike with PTSD and other mental health
issues. Villayat realised that neither civilians or
veterans were receiving adequate support. In fact, he
received no support until 12 years after finishing his
two year tour of duty in Northern Ireland in 1985.
Villayat encompassed both groups of people within
his projects all of which are run through Facebook:
Wolf International Poetry Exhibition and Wolf
Photography International Camera Club as well as:
Disabled Artists Network – A support group for
disabled artists (mental and physical) and nondisabled
artists to exhibit their art to promote a
sense of well being. They meet regularly on Friday
evenings at Tesco Bulwell Extra, Nottingham.
Veterans Support Group – Veterans meet up for
a discounted breakfast at Tesco Bulwell Extra and
chat about anything and everything. The project
also provides free listening ear/counselling and fast
track referral into the NHS system. Veterans are
encouraged to take part in the art activities too.
You can find out more about the projects on
his website: www.wolf-photography.com or via
welcome to a new decade
by Helen Jones
Well here we are at the doorstep
of another new decade. Where did
the last one go? And where will
the next ten years take you?
Within the world of employment we have seen huge
changes since 2010. If you’re not active on social
media today do you even exist?
The days of being chained to your desk are long
gone – flexible, agile working is offered by many
employers.
Shared parental leave was also introduced in 2015
which is a huge (and welcome) leap forward in terms
of recognising that both parents have a part to play
in the early years.
In my volunteer role with a local secondary school
I am delighted to see that careers provision is
gradually being given the importance it deserves.
Still woefully underfunded, I’ve seen a definite
move toward engaging with outside organisations
to seek the expertise and support required. This is
the only way to tackle the skills gap – by effective
communication between employers and education
providers at all levels.
Having stated all of the above, as an employer, the
progress I’m most satisfied with is the recognition
within the workplace that mental health matters.
There is an awareness that definitely wasn’t there ten
years ago. Depression and anxiety is real for a large
proportion of the working population on a daily basis.
Talking about it can only help.
As I write, Brexit is still undecided and there are many
other challenges facing us over the next decade. We
must face those challenges head on with common
sense and positivity.
On behalf of myself and all my colleagues here at
SOLOS we wish you a very Happy Christmas and a
peaceful New Year.
an amazing resource for
anyone who has lost or
reuniting dogs with their owners. The non-profit
Cotgrave Forest Walk
Walk distance: about 4 miles
Difficulty: Easy - but remember to bring your wellies
as the paths get extremely muddy!
Pub stop: None
Walks With Emily & Friends
Starting point: Lambing Gap Lane (free parking)
This walk can get very muddy during wet weather,
but the views over Nottingham and Trent Valley are
worth getting a bit mucky for.
Cotgrave Forest itself is owned privately and
although there are public footpaths and bridleways
throughout, there are signs advising shooting takes
place there, so it is a good idea to keep your dog
on a lead if you haven’t yet mastered a good recall.
Turn right at the sign and walk back into Cotgrave
Forest. Follow this track until you reach the fork in
the road again. Go round the left hand bend and
follow the road round until you are back to the
starting point.
Follow Lambing Lane down in the car until the road
bends to the right, here you will find a layby with
space to park your car.
When you have parked up, follow the public
bridleway sign down past a green barrier to the
right of the forest. Follow the path until it reaches
a fork in the road. Turn left and follow it downhill
and over a stream.
To download the Ordnance Survey map route, and for
more dog walks around the Nottinghamshire area and
beyond:
visit www.greatbritishdogwalks.com
Follow us on social media for updates:
Facebook: @greatbritishdogwalks
Instagram: @greatbritishdogwalks
Twitter: @gbdogwalks
Continue on this path until you find yourself leaving
the forest and at the village of Clipston you’ll pass
a large farm shop- Harkers- which is open Tuesday
– Saturday.
Go straight down the road (ignoring all other roads
to the left) until it bends to the right and goes
slightly downhill (this is a public road so watch out
for cars). Keep a look out for a restricted byway
sign on the right and follow it through an open
field.
Keeping to the right of the field, walk to the top of
the hill and carry on down a farm track. Keep on
this track until you reach a crossroads (about 3/4
mile). Then turn right. Cross a stream and carry on
walking until you read a bridleway sign to the right.
from your local neighbourhood policing inspector,
Craig Berry....
We held the first LPPS (Local
Police Priority Setting)meeting
in October; my thanks go those
involved in this process. The
following priorities were agreed
and will be addressed over the
next 3 months.
• Sheds and burglary issues in
Lady Bay, Abbey and Gamston
ward areas.
•
• ASB (Anti-social behaviour) in
Cotgrave precinct.
•
• ASB in the Edwalton and
Trent Bridge wards of West
Bridgford.
Some good work has already
started in conjunction with the
local Councillors and the youth
club in Cotgrave. The Rushcliffe
schools officer will also be
assisting in dealing with this
issue in Cotgrave.
One of the local PCSO’s at
West Bridgford has promoted
a cycle marking scheme called
Bike Register. The first marking
session was arranged at the
beginning of November in
conjunction with our partner
agency Rushcliffe Borough
Council.
Some good work in the Gamston
area, where we have had
problems with motorcycles
being ridden on footpaths, a
motor cycle has been seized
from a 17 year old male, he
has also been issued with a
community protection warning
letter under ASB legislation.
Once again we encourage local
residents to make an early
call to the Notts Police Force
control room using the 999 or
101 system if they see anything
suspicious in their communities.
