Death sentence Spaniard
appeal rejected
A SPANISH man sentenced
to death in Thailand
for the brutal murder
of a friend has had his final
appeal rejected by a
Thai court.
Artur Segarra, from Catalonia,
kidnapped, tortured
and murdered David Bernat
in 2016, chopping up his remains
and throwing them in
a river to hide the evidence.
His motives seem to have
been purely financial and
there is CCTV footage of
the victim and defendant

extracting money from cashpoints
after Mr Bernat had
been reported missing.
Segarra forced his friend
to withdraw just over €2,000
before killing him, something
backed up by DNA
evidence.
Although Thailand still
has the death penalty on its
statute books it is very rarely
used and has been under
an effective moratorium for
a decade.
Legal experts say that the
Asian country is highly unlikely
to use it on a foreigner
and the likely outcome for
Segarra is that he will serve
eight years of his life sentence
in Thailand and then
be returned to Spain to see
out the remainder of it.
At the time of the murder
the case made huge headlines
in Spain, casting the
spotlight on the lifestyle of
the large expatriate Spanish
community in Thailand and
in Bangkok in particular.

Talking about cancer

the venue last week for a
major gathering of experts
in the field of oncology, specifically
colon, breast and
gynaecological cancers.
The day focused on treatment,
clinical best practice
and research.
There was also a round
table and presentation on
genetic factors and their importance
in both early onset
cancer and that of senior
citizens.

in this part of the
world have a lot of experience
with it, partly due to
the disproportionately older
citizenship that live on the
Costa Blanca.

up the league table of the
globe’s most democratic
countries, rising seven
places to 13th, ahead of
the UK among others.
The list is compiled annually
by the Denmark based
International Institute for
Democracy with Spain scoring
0.7705 out of a possible
1.00.
All countries were independently
assessed on four main
areas, local and national democracy,
fundamental rights,
government control and participatory
commitment.
