BETTER LATE
THE LONG saga over the
unfinished Orihuela Costa
Emergency Centre at La
Zenia has reached the start
of the final phase, with Orihuela
council on Tuesday
formally approving the process
of advertising a tender
for the project worth
over two million euros.
It means that the facility
is planned to be completed
by December next year in
order to take advantage on a
deadline for key EU funding.
The drawn-out affair dates
back to the original contractor
going bust in 2012, with
just the very basic shell of the
building constructed close to
the Consum supermarket.
There then followed years
of inactivity from the Valencian
regional government
and Orihuela council, with
regular protests and complaints
by Orihuela Costa
residents that their needs
were being ignored.
A change in political control
in Valencia in 2015 led
to the start of log-jam being
broken, and plans for a revised
centre were submitted
in 2017 taking into account
new budgets and new safety
requirements.
Promised dates for tenders
to be advertised came
and went, as authorities in
Orihuela and Valencia fell
out over who should take
THAN NEVER!
responsibility for the work, with
the regional government eventually
decreeing that Orihuela
should be in charge.
Over three months ago, Orihuela
council said that a tender
was about to be advertised but
nothing happened, with European
Union grant money to help
fund the two point one million
euro project ending next year.
Orihuela government team
spokesman, Jose Aix, said that
once the successful bidder for
the work had been awarded the
contract, they would have up to
ten months to finish the centre.
“It is a priority for the council
The building will house all of
the Orihuela Costa´s emergency
The centre will also have ambulances
based there during the
busy summer tourist season,
and a helicopter landing pad.
Response times to incidents
will be significantly improved
on current timings, with emergency
teams frequently making
journeys from areas outside the
TOPLESS protesters interrupted
the annual commemoration
for dictator General Franco,
who died 44 years ago.
The half-dozen women, from
the feminist group Femen, descended
on the Plaza de Oriente
in Madrid on Sunday chanting
“for fascism no honour and no glory,”
with the same slogan written
on their chests.
They were quickly removed by
police.
A few hundred Franco supporters
turned out for the event, held
around November 20th each year
to mark the anniversary of the
Pedro Sánchez
by Alex Trelinski
dictator’s death in 1975.
Jesus Munoz, the leader of the
fascist Falange party, said the
march was against the “desecration”
of Franco’s remains, which
were exhumed and moved from
the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum
in October, and against Spain´s
historical-memory law which recognises
those who suffered during
Franco’s dictatorship.
“Now they start desecrating
tombs, this is not going to be like
1936 (when the Spanish Civil
War started) but much worse,” he
Coalition offer
THE LARGEST separatist
party in the Catalunya region
has voted to support a new
national government in return
for talks on independence.
About 95 per cent of members
of the Esquerra Republicana de
Catalunya (ERC), a social democratic-based
party, backed the
move in a ballot.
The ERC could now become
kingmaker to the PSOE Socialists
who failed to win a majority
in this month's election, but
have decided to form a coalition
with the far-left Podemos party.
But their combined tally of
seats, 155, is still short of the 176
stated.
During Franco’s brutal regime,
tens of thousands of his enemies
were killed and imprisoned in a
campaign to wipe out dissent, and
as many as half a million combatants
and civilians died in the civil
war of the late thirties.
by Alex Trelinski
required to form a parliamentary
majority.
With the ERC's 13 seats and
a possible combination of support
from other leftist or Basque
parties, Prime Minister Pedro
Sánchez would find it easier to
continue in office at the head of
a coalition.
However, the PSOE have
firmly opposed granting Catalans
a legal independence referendum,
while recognising that
both Catalunya and the Basque
Country are nations within
Spain, and not just regions.

FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 3
Orange banking
ORANGE has begun a mobile-only
bank in Spain,
tempting customers with
a discount on their mobile
phone bills.
Having launched in its
home market of France two
years ago, Orange Bank ar-
by Alex Trelinski
rived in Spain this week,
with customers able to open
a current account with a
Spanish Iban without any
registration fee.
The bank is also offering a
one per cent interest rate for
deposits of up to 20 thousand
euros and a 30 euro discount
on the customers' next mobile
bill.
The 100 per cent mobilebased
service, lets users
perform all their day-today
banking operations,
such as checking their expenses,
paying with Apple
Pay, moving money between
accounts, making
free Sepa transfers, and
managing their Mastercard
debit card.
The app also has chat
functionality where customers
can talk to bank agents,
while a "group management"
feature allows the
sharing or transfer of funds
and expenses among several
people.
Narciso Perales, general
director, Orange Bank in
Spain, says: "Our hallmark
as a leading telco enables
us to be the most suited to
design a mobile banking service
for today’s highly mobile
population."
I often wonder how people get drawn in
by scammers, you hear of it all the time
but how does it happen? How do people
allow it to happen?
I was recently approached by a couple
who were considering investing their
life savings. They had recently sold
their house here in Spain and wanted
a low risk investment which would
provide them with a steady income. In
the past this could have been achieved
by depositing cash with your bank and
getting a reasonable return on your
savings, however with interest rates at an
all-time low, people are being forced to
shop around.
So where do you start on your search for
an investment product? Well my clients
understandably googled ‘safe’, ‘low risk’
investments and were overloaded with
many different options. Not knowing
where to start, they postponed their
research and opted to speak with a
professional who can at least explain in
simple terms how investments work and
what would be most suitable. Days later,
my client was on his laptop checking
his emails when he noticed a ‘low risk’,
‘safe’, ‘capital protected’ advert appear
on the top of his screen. Inquisitively
he clicked on the advert and it took him
through to a professional looking website
where he discovered they had a fixed
interest savings plan which was capital
guaranteed and offered a set 6% return
for the next 5 years with NO FEES! This
is exactly what they were looking for so
they completed the form to receive further
information.
Days later they received a phone call
Finance Feature
provided by...
Are scammers becoming more sophisticated?
from the company who were based in
Malaga where a seemingly professional
adviser gave them confirmation that they
could have guaranteed returns of 33.82%
over 5 years with no risk to their original
capital. In fact he went as far as putting it
in writing to them, illustrating that if they
were to invest £50,000 in 5 years it would
be worth £66,910!! Being sensible they
started to research the company, and this
fixed interest, risk free savings plan. They
were re-assured by the professionalism
of the product, the company boasted that
they were operating in 189 countries
including UK, Spain, Hongkong, Thailand
and many more. Struggling to find
anything negative the couple agreed to
meet with their ‘so-called’ professional
adviser.
Having already made an appointment
to see me prior to this they popped into
the office to see what Chorus could offer
and it wasn’t long before the clients
were telling me all about the ‘risk-free’,
guaranteed returns that they were about
to sign up to, asking whether we had
anything similar.
Straight away I knew this was a scam! As
an independent adviser constantly looking
for the best options for my clients, and as
someone with nearly 10 year’s experience
advising here in Spain, all the alarm bells
began to ring.
As I started to investigate the product
in more detail, it became very clear,
very quickly that this was a completely
unregulated product, the capital guarantee
was about as useful as a chocolate teapot
and all over its literature were the words
‘for professional investors only’ (these
Dutch delight
by Alex Trelinski
A PASSENGER flying into Alicante-
Elche airport on Monday morning got
the surprise of her life when she disembarked
from her Transavia flight.
The lady, who flew in from Eindhoven
in the Netherlands, found herself showered
with gifts and a special certificate
which commemorated the fact that she
was the airport´s 14th million passenger
this year.
Her arrival symbolically beat last
year´s record figure of just under 14 million
passengers, with the facility set to
log another 500 thousand passengers by
the end of the year.
Passenger numbers for 2019 are up by
eight per cent on the 2018 figures.
were the words used on all the ‘Structured
Notes’ which were miss-sold and left
devastating damage to the life savings of
many here on the Costa Blanca as part
of the Continental Wealth scam). This
couple narrowly avoided a scam that could
have swallowed their entire life savings,
and do you know what………. It could
have easily happened. On the surface,
to an untrained eye, this product looked
legitimate, and it was a mixture of luck
and fate that walked them into my office
that day.
I’m sorry to say, but in a world where
central bank interest rates are effectively
0%, it is impossible to guarantee returns.
The idea of a guaranteed, capital protected
5, 6 or 7% is preposterous to anyone who
knows their stuff, and truly understands
our current economic environment.
Yes, there are low risk, highly diversified
investment funds out there that have
consistently achieved growth over many
years, but they are not guaranteed and the
risks need to be properly discussed with
an independent professional to assure
suitability.
My advice is stay clear of the internet
when it comes to shopping for
investments, seek professional advice
and make sure the company and the
products you use are fully regulated and
are appropriate for you. By fully regulated
this means they will be listed with local
regulators here in Spain, and preferably
other trusted regulators like the UK FCA.
Whether it’s a product provider or a ‘socalled’
financial adviser, they are legally
obliged to clearly display their regulatory
details, reference numbers etc on everything
– articles, business cards, emails etc.
Always get a second opinion before you
commit to anything and remember, if it
seems to good to be true, it probably is. If
Pepper spray attack closes station
Kidnapped and assaulted
A WOMAN who was kidnapped
in the northern
Spanish town of Pamplona
and held for 48 hours was
eventually released by the
authorities at Vinaros, in
THE family of a young missing
woman have admitted
they fear the worse while police
are looking for a man she
had arranged to meet online.
Marta Calvo Buron, aged 25,
has been missing since 6 November
and her last known location
was the small Valencian
town of Manuel.
She had arranged to meet a
35-year-old Colombian man in
Hope fades for missing woman
by Simon Russell
a house there, details the authorities
gained from an interview
with her mother who had
received a text from Marta and
then no further communication.
The suspect has a police
record for drug trafficking
and his vehicle, a minivan,
was found abandoned
in a warehouse and is being
the Castellon province of
the Valencian Community.
The victim’s ordeal began
last weekend after she was
bundled into a car by her expartner.
The woman was reported
missing the next day
and the Navarra National
Police Corps started an
operation to find her.
Her ex was suspected and
later that day his vehicle was
forensically tested.
The property where the pair
met had been “thoroughly
cleaned” and the Guardia Civil
believe that this had been done
to hide forensic evidence.
The Guardia have been
searching the mountains near
Manuel for signs of Marta while
a major search is also underway
for the man she was last seen
with.
ONE of Valencia’s busiest
metro stations was forced
to close on Sunday morning
after a fight broke out
where pepper spray was
used.
The incident happened
at the Plaza España stop at
about 6am when a group of
youths who had left a nearby
club started brawling.
One of them used pepper
spray which affected innocent
bystanders, with three
of them having to be taken
spotted in Castellon, several
hundred kilometres away.
A police cordon was set
up and the vehicle stopped
while a 30-year-old man was
arrested.
He has been charged with
sexual assault, illegal detention
and actual bodily harm.
by Simon Russell
to a hospital.
The station had to be fully
aired out and the ventilation
system switched on to clear
the residual spray away.
The youngsters who
caused the problem had all
fled and no arrests have
been made, although CCTV
footage is being checked.
Death sentence Spaniard
appeal rejected
A SPANISH man sentenced
to death in Thailand
for the brutal murder
of a friend has had his final
appeal rejected by a
Thai court.
Artur Segarra, from Catalonia,
kidnapped, tortured
and murdered David Bernat
in 2016, chopping up his remains
and throwing them in
a river to hide the evidence.
His motives seem to have
been purely financial and
there is CCTV footage of
the victim and defendant
by Simon Russell
extracting money from cashpoints
after Mr Bernat had
been reported missing.
Segarra forced his friend
to withdraw just over €2,000
before killing him, something
backed up by DNA
evidence.
Although Thailand still
has the death penalty on its
statute books it is very rarely
used and has been under
an effective moratorium for
a decade.
Legal experts say that the
Asian country is highly unlikely
to use it on a foreigner
and the likely outcome for
Segarra is that he will serve
eight years of his life sentence
in Thailand and then
be returned to Spain to see
out the remainder of it.
At the time of the murder
the case made huge headlines
in Spain, casting the
spotlight on the lifestyle of
the large expatriate Spanish
community in Thailand and
in Bangkok in particular.
Banged up abroad.
Segarra seems to smile as
he is sentenced to death
in Bangkok
Talking about cancer
THE Hospital de Denia was
the venue last week for a
major gathering of experts
in the field of oncology, specifically
colon, breast and
gynaecological cancers.
The day focused on treatment,
clinical best practice
and research.
There was also a round
table and presentation on
genetic factors and their importance
in both early onset
cancer and that of senior
citizens.
by Simon Russell
Case studies of patients
treated at Denia Hospital
were used to illustrate the
work being carried out.
Spain is one if the leading
countries when it comes
to cancer treatment and clinicians
in this part of the
earlier this month with
From start to finish, the
All the proceeds will go to
local causes, with Studio 32
“I’m very proud of
everyone involved who all all
worked very hard to produce
such an excellent show. This
time we are specifically donating
to charities that are
assisting with people affected
by the recent floods.”
Studio 32 thanked the San
Back in business
TORREVIEJA´S Municipal
Theatre reopened last
weekend, after closing
its doors over four years
ago due to safety concerns,
and then a long
dispute with the original
architect who refused to
sign approval papers for
changes.
The previous coalition
council shut down the theatre
in 2015 after it took
power away from the Partido
Popular in the municipal
elections, stating
that the building did not
pass the appropriate safety
standards.
Work was done over a period
of months, but then the
closure descended into a farce
involving a dispute between
the architect and the previ-
by Alex Trelinski
ous council, as both blamed
each other for nothing
happening.
Eduardo Dolon, who returned
as Partido Popular
mayor earlier this year,
pledged to reopen the theatre,
and slammed the previous
council administration
for failing to provide the right
documents that the architect
had asked for.
Andante concerts
THE LOCAL Andante International
Choir featuring
singers from the UK, Scandinavia,
The choir, under musical
director Karen Blagbrough,
will perform next Friday
night(December 6th) at the
Orihuela Costa Civic Centre
by Alex Trelinski
at Alameda del Mar starting
at 8.00pm.
On Saturday December
7th there will also be an
8.00pm start for a performance
at the Los Montesinos
church next to the main
square, and then on Sunday
December 8th, Andante will
be at Torrevieja´s San Pedro
and Pablo church, with the
concert beginning at 6.00pm.
The choir, which was
formed three years ago, will
be performing a variety of
Christmas songs and funds
raised at the Saturday and
Sunday concerts will go to
the church venues and to
also to the Caritas charity.

A LONG battle by Pilar
opening of a walkway
linking Torre de la
Plastic
plague
by Simon Russell
THAILAND has a major problem
with plastic, with the average
citizen using an incredible
ten plastic bags a day.
Combine this with the fact that
there is no real culture of recycling
and the environmental issues
are obvious, something highlighted
by the death of a wild deer
in a national park this week.
The 10-year-old adult had
7 kilogrammes (about 15lb) of
garbage in its stomach, mainly
plastics.
This was confirmed as the
cause of death and the one good
thing to come out of it is that the
Thai people may be encouraged to
start looking into their excessive
use of plastics, which wrap and
package everything from take
away food to shopping.
Last month a baby dugong (a
type of manatee) gained media attention
in the country after it was
found seriously ill after digesting
plastic before later dying.
Many retailers are now starting
to do their bit by stopping
handing out single use plastic
bags.
However, the government admits
it needs to run a programme
educating the public on the dangers
and also by setting up more
recycling points.
Measles killing
kids in thousands
HERE in the west we generally
regard measles as
an irritant if contracted,
certainly not something
that can prove deadly.
However, an outbreak
sweeping the Democrat Republic
of the Congo (DRC)
shows that is far from the
case with more than 5,000
people being killed there this
year, 90% of those children
under five.
Around 250,000 people
in the poverty stricken central
African state have contracted
measles, mainly due
to the lack of vaccines and
by Simon Russell
the trouble distributing it to
remote and often war torn
areas.
Fear of the disease has led
in turn to attacks on health
care facilities as people
search for the vaccine with
six health care workers having
been killed just this year
and dozens hurt.
The authorities are trying
to focus on the worst hit
areas and then work down
from there but admit to
fighting a losing battle in a
country also struggling with
an Ebola virus outbreak.
The majority of the
deaths are from measles
related side effects such
as severe diarrhoea and
encephalitis that would be
treatable in wealthier countries
but can often spell
death to the poor, especially
the very young.
Ironically in parts of the
west there is a growing “anti-vax”
movement while in
the DRC children are dying
as there is not enough vaccinations
to go around - and
also showing how rapidly the
disease can spread.
The football club helping
find missing kids
ITALIAN football team
AS Roma have long had
a reputation for social
awareness with their mixture
of big business and
community help.
One of the team’s approaches
down the years
has been a split screen announcement
of new club
signings and social messages,
ensuring the latter get
huge coverage with an audience
that may not normally
see such things.
Their latest campaign has
featured missing children,
not just in Italy but around
the world.
So for example the signing
of Pau Lopez sat alongside a
video and details of Lee Boxell
from Sutton in the UK
who went missing in 1988
aged 15.
by Simon Russell
While sadly the publicity
failed to bring to light
any news on Lee, his father
said that the campaign was
“like a comfort blanket”
and the response from football
fans and the club was
amazing.
So far Roma have featured
109 cases from 12 different
countries with, incredibly,
five of the children being
found due to the publicity,
two in London, two in Kenya
and a Belgian boy.
The club have worked
with the international Centre
for Missing and Exploited
Children and their work
has gained plaudits from the
footballing world with many
players sending the videos
on to their huge bands of social
media followers, further
increasing publicity.
Ex Manchester United
player Chris Smalling
signed for Roma in the summer
and was delighted when
the missing Kenyan child
who was shown alongside
his joining video was found
safe and sound.
“As a father it makes me
so happy that this young
girl from my announcement
video has been reunited with
her loved one” he posted.
Overall the videos have
been viewed around 10 million
times globally and the
club plan to continue the
campaign during the January
transfer window.
There is now talk of larger
clubs such as Barcelona and
Liverpool starting similar
projects.

“They also provide and
each housing 4 young
people making the transition
from orphanage life to becoming
CUTE OTTER
RESCUE
I’m sucker for a nice animal tale, so I bring you news
of a baby otter being rescued after being found wandering
in a busy Aberdeenshire street.
The Scottish SPCA said the “tiny” otter was spotted in
Inverurie by a member of the public on Monday.
The organisation said the otter and its mother may
have become separated after flooding.
Scottish SPCA inspector Amanda Watson said: “A brave
member of the public picked up a male otter early on Monday
morning on a busy street, quite near the river.
“The pup is now in the care of our National Wildlife Rescue
Centre. He will stay with us until he is a year old as
that’s how long otters stay with their mothers in the wild.”
She added: “It was the most adorable encounter I’ve had
on a Monday morning in a long time.”
STRANGE PRIORITY
A builder and a shop worker have been
named as the winners of a £105m EuroMillions
jackpot.
Steve Thomson, 42, and his wife Lenka, 41,
from West Sussex, were the sixth jackpot prize
winners in the UK this year, operator Camelot
said.
Their ticket won £105,100,701.90 on 19 November,
the 25th anniversary of the National
Lottery’s first draw.
Mr Thomson said when he realised he had won
that he felt he was “on the verge of having a heart
attack”.
I suspect that he will have multiple coronaries
as many friends will suddenly start crawling out
of the woodwork.
I just cannot understand why any lottery jackpot
winner wants publicity over their success,
unless they just fancy a moment in the limelight
and a bit of showing off.
Essex Police is investigating
claims that an officer ordered a
driver to remove a “B******* to
Brexit” sign from his car.
Peter Cook says he was a passenger
in the Mini Cooper – which
had the anti-Brexit message emblazoned
across it – when it was pulled
over on the M25 near Brentwood on
Sunday afternoon.
Footage posted on Twitter purportedly
shows the officer standing
next to the vehicle as a man – believed
to be the driver – crouches
down to remove some of the lettering.
Mr Cook told Sky News that he
is pursuing a complaint against the
police and wants a “full and frank
unreserved apology” over the incident.
He is considering requesting a
donation to a charity which equates
to the cost of the removed lettering.
In the video, Mr Cook is heard
describing the officer as “very aggressive”
and claims the officer told
him he could not even say the word
“b*******” because “ladies may be
present, even though they’re not”.
MAKING
A MINT
The UK’s largest ever coin has been
released and it is big enough to serve
your dinner on. Royal Mint has today
unveiled its five kilo record-breaking
coin, worth at least £5,000.
Made from alloy 999 Au Fine Gold, the
impressive coin has a diameter of 175mm,
and one of them has already been bought
for an undisclosed amount.
It is part of a new ‘Great Engravers’
series, that celebrates artists who have
worked on British coinage and begins with
Royal Academician William Wyon’s Una
And The Lion design.
Wyon was the chief engraver at the Royal
Mint from 1828 until his death in 1851 and
was most famous for his coin and medal
portraits of Queen Victoria. He is also
well-known for his design of Una And The
Lion, considered by collectors as one of the
world’s most beautiful coins.
A SIMPLE IDEA
There have been times down the
years when you were never quite
sure whether you should give up
your seat on a bus for somebody
who you reckon might need it
more.
I was actually told a couple of times
by elderly travellers that I was insulting
their capabilities of standing, so
I started not to bother, and made me
feel mean.
So I like the idea from Nottingham
where bus and tram users will be offered
“happy to move for you” badges
to let disabled and elderly people
know they can request their seat.
The move has been welcomed by
disability campaigners who said it
would help, but added it was “sad” the
initiative was needed.
A Nottingham council spokeswoman
said disabled people, especially
those with invisible disabilities, had
reported receiving very negative responses
when they asked people on
public transport to give up their seats.
This nice idea I hope will work and
spread across Britain.

FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 17
Business & Money
Getting your number
AN NIE number is vital if
you spend any time here
in Spain, and that applies
even to people who
spend a limited period in
the country and who own
a property, or want to do
most kinds of important
business including opening
a bank account.
If you want to buy a property
in Spain, you must get an
NIE, and time may be of the
essence, Sun Lawyers can
get it all sorted for you, and
make sure that you have all
the right papers to keep the
process as straight forward
as possible.
Get in touch with us to see
what we can do for you, and
here is a brief guide to the
world of the NIE:-
What is an
NIE?
Its full name is Número de
Identidad de Extranjero,
which translates as ‘Foreigners’
Identification Number’.
All non-Spaniards require an
NIE in order to have a fiscal
identity in Spain.
You will need your unique
NIE number, which will
start with an ‘X’ or ‘Y’ followed
by seven or eight digits
and then a final letter,
to complete any type of financial
transaction or legal
documentation, from buying
a property or car, to starting
a business, being employed,
getting connected to utilities
and filing your Spanish
tax return (which even nonresident
homeowners must
do).
Some banks will ask for
your NIE just to open an
account with them.
Remember that an NIE is
a separate thing to getting a
residencia, which is a different
process altogether. New
arrivals in Spain should
obtain their NIE within 90
days of moving here, whether
or not they are purchasing
property.
Applying in
person
There is nothing stopping
braver people applying for
their NIE themselves, but
for peace of mind, Sun Lawyers
will take you through
everything, which is especially
daunting if you are
new to Spain.
Applications must be made
at any police station that has
an immigration office, or
‘Oficina de Extranjeros’.
You’ll need to submit your
completed NIE application
forms (EX-15) along with
supporting documentation.
You’ll also need to pay the
small application fee (approximately
€10) at a bank
using a Model 790 form,
showing proof of payment at
the police station.
Supporting documents
typically includes your
passport and photocopy of
the main page, a document
(and photocopy) that validates
your reason for getting
an NIE (eg a notarised
letter or deposit contract for
a property) and a passport
photo.
We will make sure that
you have the the right papers,
but in some instances,
you may need to make an
appointment, otherwise you
can simply turn up, but be
prepared to wait.
Once your application is
submitted, you must wait
for your NIE certificate to
be issued, ready for collection
from the police station
or sent by post to an address
in Spain.
Using Sun
Lawyers
In the vast majority of cases,
it really does make sense to
use a legal firm that you can
trust, and that is where Sun
Lawyers are here to help!
Many of our clients ask
for this to be included in the
package of services we provide
them, so that you have
more time to deal with the
property purchase.
It gives you one less thing
to worry about at the start of
your buying journey, helping
to make the whole process
more enjoyable.
Sun Lawyers will ensure
that your application form is
completed properly (in Spanish),
that all the supporting
documentation is in order
and that the fee is paid.
Our local knowledge
means that we know not
only the most convenient police
station to go to, but we
will organise the best time to
go with you.
When your NIE certificate
is ready, we can then collect
it for you in your absence or
make sure that is posted to
one of our offices.
An even more hands-off
option is to grant us powerof-attorney
rights, which
means that Sun Lawyers
can take care of the whole
process in your absence.
The importance
of timescales
It’s not unknown for NIE
certificates to be ready for
collection or posted the same
day as the application was
submitted in parts of Spain,
but Sun Lawyers work on
the basis of a fortnight here
on the Costa Blanca.
For buyers who have committed
to a property purchase,
a delay getting your
NIE can hold up completion,
as your NIE must by law be
on your Escritura (deed).
In addition, not being able
to complete on the agreed
date can also land you with
a financial penalty.
The best option for buyers
right now is to apply for their
NIE as soon as possible, ideally
before you have found a
property you wish to buy.
Even safer, appoint Sun
Lawyers and give us power of
attorney to start the process
as early as possible.
And when you do find your
dream home, Sun Lawyers
could include a clause in
the purchase contract, typically
signed within 30 days
of reserving a property, protecting
you from penalties
if your NIE hasn’t arrived
by the agreed completion
date.
Business & Money
Politicians
savaged
BORIS Johnson's push to
"get Brexit done" by December
2020 raises the
risk of leaving without a
deal, the UK's former ambassador
to the EU has
warned.
Mr Johnson has vowed to
take the UK out of the EU
on January 31st and strike a
permanent trade deal within
a year if he wins the election.
But Sir Ivan Rogers –
who quit as the UK´s senior
Brexit diplomat in 2017 -
said this was "diplomatic
amateurism".
He also said Labour's
stance would "get the eyerolling
it deserves" in the EU.
by Alex Trelinski
Labour leader Jeremy
Corbyn is promising to negotiate
a new Brexit deal
within three months, based
on close alignment with the
EU. This would then be put
to the public in a legally
binding referendum, alongside
the option of staying in
the EU.
Talks breaking down before
the end of 2020 - when
the future trading relationship
is supposed to be settled
- "is much likelier than
people realise", Sir Ivan
said.
"The further 'out' of the
European Union we choose
to go, and therefore the further
we want to go, the longer
it will take to negotiate
the necessary agreements,"
he said.
By promising to "Get
Brexit Done", Sir Ivan said
government ministers were
either getting the "critical
point" wrong or choosing to
"mislead the British public".
He said the prime minister's
claims a Brexit deal
could be concluded swiftly
were "diplomatic amateurism
dressed up domestically
as boldness and decisiveness"
and were actually
strengthening the EU's negotiating
position.
Sir Ivan said that while
the government's strategy
"may indeed work splendidly
at home" the EU was preparing
to "fully exploit UK desperation
to get something
over the new line".
"Why not take advantage
of yet another prime minister
who has unwisely boxed
himself in?"
In his speech, the former
diplomat also attacked Remainers
"who think the clock
can be put back" saying they
were "in denial about where
mainstream continental elite
opinion is".
On Labour, he said Mr Cor-
byn's stance on Brexit "frankly
deserves the Brussels eyerolling
it duly gets".
"As does the idea that he
will not take a public position
on which way the public
should vote on the defining
issue of the day, even after
he has negotiated the deal
he professes to want."
Alonso acquitted
EX-REAL MADRID midfielder
Xabi Alonso was found
not guilty of tax fraud, a
Madrid court announced on
Tuesday.
The prosecutors had intially
demanded for him to
face five years in jail before
halving their request.
Alonso, a World Cup winner
with Spain in 2010, was
accused of using a company
based on the Portuguese
island of Madeira to avoid
paying two million euros in
taxes on his image rights to
the Spanish authorities.
Prosecutors said the fraud
took place between 2010 and
2012 when he was playing
for Real Madrid.
Petty theft costing
hundreds of millions
AN association that represents
large Spanish retailers,
the CEOE, has issued
a report estimating that
what is termed as petty
theft is costing businesses
about 1.6 billion euros
a year.
There are a large number
of multiple repeat offenders
accounting for a major chunk
of these losses, taking advantage
of laws which mean that
thefts under €400 are always
classed as a minor crime, regardless
of how many times
by Alex Trelinski
playing in 2017 after a stint
at Bayern Munich, is one of
a string of high-profile footballers
to face scrutiny by the
Spanish tax authorities over
the declaration of income
from image rights.
Some have admitted fraud
as part of a deal to avoid jail
time, including Atletico Madrid
striker Diego Costa and
Barcelona's Gerard Pique,
both of whom paid out after
being convicted over the
summer.
And earlier this year, the
tax authorities caught up
with ex-Real Madrid forward
Cristiano Ronaldo and
his former boss at the capi-
by Simon Russell
the offender repeats the act.
The CEOE used the example
of a man who regularly
steals bottles of alcohol by
hiding it under his coat and
then paying for two bags of
cat litter.
He has been caught in
the act in one supermarket
chain 44 times in the past
four years, stealing €6,000
worth of goods.
The man has received
numerous fines totalling
tal club, Jose Mourinho, both
over the management and
declaration of image rights.
€18,000 but has never paid
any of them nor has the
means to do so.
There are multiple stories
involving gangs or individuals
who know that the law
is powerless to stop them as
long as they use no violence
and steal less then €400.
Fines are not a deterrent
said the CEOE, and a system
needs to be introduced to have
more stringent penalties for
repeat offenders, for example
a short prison sentence or
restraining order.
SPAIN´S BBVA bank has
introduced new work-life
policies to make sure their
employees don´t take their
work home with them.
The new policy includes
including telling all of its
employees in Spain to disconnect
from work computers
and to avoid answering
emails between the hours of
7.00pm and 8.00am whenever
possible.
The Work Better. Enjoy
Life programme, which
started last week, is part
by Alex Trelinski
of the bank´s aim to help
employees achieve a more
harmonious and productive
work-life balance.
in your home
Tel - 966 78 27 85
With over 30 years experience in the wedding industry, we can organise
and create the wedding of your dreams, on Spain's Costa Blanca.
We'll give you a unique experience, which we create to each bridal
couple's wishes. From a small intimate setting to a grand event.
We understand the time it takes to create and plan your perfect day,
especially when choosing to marry abroad. Our expertise gives you the
assurance that your special day will be everything you wish for.
WHILE the phrase ‘smart
home’ provoked bewilderment
from the average
person a decade or so
ago, it is now very much
mainstream.
People start talking to
Google in the middle of conversations,
or ask it to turn
their lights off when they’re
in bed – they even ask ‘Alexa’
for advice.
Smart home devices are
edging seamlessly into our
lives and becoming items
that increasing numbers of
us use day in, day out without
a second thought.
However, if you’d place
yourself in the not-so-techsavvy
category, fear not.
Smart home expert Andrew
Georgiou, from hardware
retailer Robert Dyas, has
the answers to common
questions that may help you
switch on.
1. What is meant
by a ‘smart
home’? Why is
it such a fastgrowing
area?
A smart home is a property
that features one or more
smart devices which can be
monitored and controlled remotely
via your smartphone
or other smart device.
You make commands on
your smart device either
manually or via voice control.
For example, you could ask
your Google speaker to turn
the lights on, or see and talk
to visitors at your door instantly
with the Ring Video
Doorbell 2.
It’s a fast-growing area
for two reasons: It’s highly
convenient as it can make
everyday life so much easier
and, as technology is advancing,
it’s becoming more
accessible.
2. What are the
benefits?
There are many benefits to
smart technology, depending
on the product you choose
to purchase. The main ones
are:
CONVENIENCE
You can control your lighting,
heating and other elements
of your home right
from your smartphone.
SECURITY
You can be confident that
your family and property are
safe as you can see what’s
going on live at any time
and be alerted if something
happens.
MONEY AND ENERGY-
SAVING
Smart products can save you
money on bills by helping you
reduce the amount of energy
you use. There are heating
devices that let you control
your thermostat remotely,
smart bulbs with which you
can control your lighting,
even a smart plug that lets
you keep an eye on how much
energy you’re using.
3. Where should
I start? Do I need
to start with a
voice-activated
personal
assistant system?
Most people will start with
something small like a
smart plug or a smart light
bulb. This helps them understand
the benefits of smart
products, and more devices
can be added and connected
up from there.
A great way to start would
be to get a smart speaker,
such as a Google speaker,
as then you can follow it up
with products that are com-

patible. Some devices may
only be compatible with Amazon
Alexa for example. Often
they’re compatible with
multiple systems.
4. How do
I know if a
particular smart
home product
is compatible
with Google or
Amazon Alexa?
Sometimes it’s on the box of
the product you’re about to
buy; If it isn’t, you’ll need to
go to either a good retailer’s
website or the website of
the brand that created the
product. Compatibility is key.
5. What are the
key areas that
the smart home
serves?
There are four main areas:
LIGHTING
With smart lighting you can
turn your lights on and off
remotely, dim them and even
change the colour to create
atmosphere if you have a colour-changing
bulb. A range
of brands offer different
technologies and prices.
SECURITY
This includes smart cameras,
doorbells, security
lights, CCTV and alarms,
and locks. With cameras and
CCTV you can monitor your
home while you’re away;
smart doorbells allow you to
talk to and see who’s at your
door from your smart device.
Smart lights enable you
to turn them on or off when
you’re out to make your home
look occupied. With smart
locks you can open your door
via your smartphone and let
in visitors without having to
give them a key.
POWER
Smart plugs and sockets
make up this area. You never
need to worry again about
leaving your straighteners or
other appliances on as you can
control them via your smart
device. You can also schedule
your appliances to turn on
and off. You can even lock your
sockets for family safety.
ENERGY
This area consists of thermostats
and plugs. With these
you can control the temperature
of your thermostat and
see how much energy a device
that’s connected to a smart
plug is using, and control it
accordingly.
6. How can I
save money on
my heating bills?
You can turn the heating on
and off when you need to
from wherever you are, which
means you’re never heating
an empty home. You can also
reduce the temperature via
the app at any time.
7. How can my
security benefit
from a smart
home device?
You can monitor your home
when you're not there, answer
the door or set off a siren.
In some systems, doorbells,
floodlights and cameras
can work together to watch
over and light up your house
to ensure intruders are kept
away. Alternatively, you can
use a smart CCTV, alarm or
lock systems.
8. Do you have to
be a geek to get
things to work?
Not at all, the best smart
products are the easiest to
use.
9. My home has
a very weak
internet service.
Could this be a
problem?
This can be a problem for
some products that require
a good signal, but you can
use signal boosters or WiFi
extenders.
10. Is it very
expensive to set
up?
It can seem expensive but
when heating systems can
reduce bills by switching
off when you don’t
need them on, and smart
plugs monitor your energy
consumption to help you
save money, they can definitely
be worth the initial
investment.
Other devices may not
offer the same long-term
savings but when you can
better protect your family
and enjoy greater convenience
and peace of mind,
what you spend upfront
may save you in multiple
other ways.
22 FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019
Utterly
Bellissima!
I BOARDED the MSC
Bellissima from Barcelona
on Friday, 8th November.
Checking in was smooth
and swift. When check-in
was finished we got the
chance to pose for a picture
with my cabin-mate in
front of the ship’s wheel!
This was the first use of
our cabin card. Soon after
we were on the ship. Crew
had taken our luggage before
we checked in, so we didn’t
have to worry about wheeling
cases around. We made
a beeline for the Edge Bar,
to get ourselves comfortable
and raise a glass to the beginning
of our cruise with a
cocktail. We were on the Premium
Drinks Package, which
meant unlimited drinks up to
the value of €10. This gave us
lots of choice, and we had so,
so much to choose from!
The drinks menu is vast,
and everything is clearly labelled
and priced. Cocktails
are beautifully made! We enjoyed
sitting at the Edge bar,
people-watching. Beside us
were the famous Swarovski
stairs, and if you look down
you can see live music and
people enjoying themselves.
Our dining plan meant we
had dinner at a set time, at
a set table, at 7.30pm each
night. Our restaurant was
called Poseidonia. We got
ready, enjoyed a drink in the
champagne bar first, and
coming 7.30, made our way to
the restaurant.
We were presented by a
line of waiters on each side
of us welcoming us, which I
thought was a lovely touch.
We got shown to our table and
sat down, waters and wines
poured for us. Our waiters
were called Aslim and Pande,
and they took very good care
of us. The menu in Poseidonia
changes every night, with
some options available all the
time, such as grilled chicken,
or house salad. I loved the excitement
of not knowing what
would be on offer each night!
Dinner normally took 1.5 –
2hrs. I had the cheese board
for my dessert every night.
I honestly couldn’t fault a
single thing! On two of the
nights, a photographer came
around to each table, offering
by Karla McGarvey,
Worldwide Horizons
to take photographs, which
would be available for viewing
or purchasing the next
day. Again, a lovely touch and
nothing to lose!
After dinner, the ship is
buzzing with activity. There
are lots of shops. There’s a
perfumery, a shop selling top
jewellery and handbags, a
chocolate shop, and most of
these are open late. I got two
pieces of Swarovski jewellery
at a 20% discount, which is
great.
The gift shop with MSC –
themed items is also great,
and very reasonably priced.
We wanted somewhere we
could sit (8 of us) and chat
and have a laugh, and we
found ourselves at masters of
The Sea pub, on Deck 7. They
have a huge selection of beers
on tap, and something I’ve
never seen before, ‘Beertails,’
which is exactly what you
think it is – cocktails made
with beer! I recommend the
‘Spiced Apple Pie’ – mmmm!!
We were very well looked after
by Yudhi, Eka and David
for the 3 nights we visited and
we were never left thirsty!
On the ‘MSC For me’ app,
you can see daily activities,
special offers and a map of the
ship, which does come in very
handy at times! There is also
a great feature which allows
you to message friends and
family. A very handy feature
for when the boat is at sea,
meaning data roaming is not
available. Wifi packages are
available, but at €39.90 a day,
I decided to give it a miss! I
can catch up with everything
when the boat is docked so I
didn’t miss it too much.
The casino is suitable for
smokers, which is handy as
the wind is cutting outside
poolside. However, half is
non-smoking so there’s something
for everyone. We saw
a Cirque de Soleil show in
the Carousel Lounge, which
was located at the back of
the casino. We took the €15
option of Cocktail and Show.
The options were two premade
cocktails, and one nonalcoholic
one. The show was
great, something different
and in my opinion a bit of an
escape!
Located on the 15th deck
is the ‘marketplace,’ the buffet
restaurant, which is open
20 hours a day. It starts at
6.30am, serving breakfast.
The choice is vast, with both
continental and English
breakfasts on offer, and everything
in between from
pancakes and omelettes to
kippers and herrings. You are
absolutely unlimited in what
you choose and how much of
it you have. Tea, coffee, waters
and juices are available
at dispensers.
If you have the premium
drinks plan, you can use the
buzzer at the table and have
a drink brought to you – fruit
juice and cappucinos or something
stronger. The place
is always bustling, and the
queuing system may not have
a whole lot of structure, but
be assured the food will not
run out! Staff members are
incredibly attentive, and are
always serving, clearing, or
cleaning.
At lunchtime, the
buffet changes, and
there is a cheese
station, an ethnic
station, a salad bar,
and much more.
One day when we
were there, there
was a huge turkey
being cut, and
slices being served.
You’ll never go
hungry here. Also,
there are stations
at each entrance
and exit for hand
sanitizers, which I
appreciated.
Our cabin was
situated on the
14th deck. A compact
room, but it optimised
all of the space. The bed was
the star of the show – so big
and so comfortable! We met
the room attendant a couple
of times. Our rooms were al-
All in all, I had an amazing time on the Bellissima. I came home with memories
and also those in the form of photographs, which aren’t cheap, but in my
opinion, totally worth it. The photographers are very good at what they do. We
were always looked after, felt spoiled, and the whole experience was a very
special one. It was my first cruise and it’s safe to say I now have the ‘cruise
FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 23
Penguins,
Mountains
& Beaches
Cape Town
FIRST-TIME visitors to
Cape Town tend to be immediately
struck by the
city’s beauty – and indeed,
the city is often ranked as
one of the world’s most
attractive. Along with its
stunning coastline and
sandy beaches, relaxed
cafes and refined architecture,
a large amount of
credit for this must go to
Table Mountain.
Large, striking but not
imposing, the mountain provides
a unique, breathtaking
backdrop for South Africa’s
favourite city. However Table
Mountain also hints at
Cape Town’s wilder side, one
that may not be immediately
obvious.
The iconic mountain can
be reached by cable car,
which has a revolving platform
so everyone on board
gets a view during the journey.
However, the more adventurous
can experience
the mountain by foot. The
keenest hikers can tackle the
Platteklip Gorge route to the
top, although easier routes
are available. Regardless of
the path taken, keep your
eyes peeled for wildlife – the
mountain is home to the dassie,
the closest living relative
to the African elephant, as
well as colourful lizards, native
birds and more species
of plant than the entirety of
the UK.
Most unusually, Cape
Town is also home to penguins.
Yes – you heard right!
You can drive to Boulders
Beach, where the penguins
are found, or take a kayaking
tour to get up close to the
rocks on which the penguins
perch. Extend your kayaking
trip around Cape Point,
where whales and dolphins
can often be spotted.
Other exciting activities
include South Africa’s latest
craze of sandboarding,
on offer a short drive outside
Cape Town. Similar to
snowboarding, sandboarding
sees thrill-seekers slide
down sand dunes at speed. If
that sounds too much, basic
routes are available for firsttimers
or the faint of heart.
Of course, Cape Town offers
far more than just adventure
– visitors can have the
holiday of a lifetime and only
break a sweat sunbathing.
Camps Bay provides a long
sandy beach populated with
palm trees and is a favourite
of the locals to enjoy sundowners
in the long summer
evenings.
South Africa offers incredible
value for money. Prices
are down by 20% in Cape
Town compared to last year,
due to the Sterling’s strength
against the South African
Rand, according to the 2016
Worldwide Holiday Costs
Barometer from Post Office
Travel Money. This makes
Cape Town the lowest-priced
long haul destination surveyed
and the third cheapest
overall.
A culinary haven, Cape
Town diners can enjoy a
three-course meal for two
– including wine – for the
equivalent of around £23.00.
Real foodies should try Pot
Luck Club; the small plates
restaurant is a Luke Dale-
Roberts venture, one of the
world’s most innovative
chefs who also runs Test
Kitchen, a celebrity hangout
and well worth the threemonth
waiting list for reservations.
And don’t forget the wine.
Cape Town is full of great
options for budding sommeliers.
A glass of wine costs
an average of £1.45 and the
Cape Winelands, located
just outside the city, provide
countless opportunities for
vineyard tours and tastings.
Alongside world-class
wines, Cape Town is in the
middle of a craft beer revolution.
The Weinhaus +
Biergarten bar was arguably
the birthplace of this
hop-inspired uprising, led
by local heroes such as Gary
Pnematicos, founder of Cape
Town’s own Citizen Beer. After
a few tipples, visit one of
Cape Town’s famed jazz bars.
A heady mix of saxophone,
piano and vocals can be found
at bars such as the Alexander
Bar Upstairs, Asoka, the
Crypt Jazz Restaurant and
the Piano Bar.
Fun for all the family!

DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to
uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white
crossword-style grid is set
up for each quote, with a number of
letters “hovering” above each column.
Your task is to “drop” each of those
letters into the appropriate square in
each column, until the entire quote is
revealed. All punctuation (commas,
periods, dashes, etc.) has been
Pets
Make it
a happy
Christmas
CHRISTMAS is coming hyperactivity and seizures.
and animal welfare experts
are calling on pet
owners to make sure their
four-legged friends stay
safe and healthy over the
festive period.
Vets say they always see
an increase in diet-related
cases over the holidays –
with chocolate the biggest
problem.
Chocolate is toxic to almost
all animals as it contains
Dogs will sniff chocolate
out so it is important that
you keep your human treats
well out of reach.
Giving your dog or cat
bones or the turkey carcass
after your Christmas dinner
may also seem like a treat.
However, vets warn that
pets can easily choke on
them or sustain internal injuries
if the bones splinter.
Cooked bones in particular
a substance called splinter easily.
theobromine – the higher
the cocoa content, the more
toxic the treat.
Theobromine affects the
heart, central nervous system
and kidneys. A lethal
dose for a medium sized dog
is about 10 squares of dark
chocolate.
Symptoms may show between
two and 24 hours after
the chocolate has been eaten
and pets can suffer vomiting,
diarrhoea, restlessness,
Sharing your Christmas
dinner with your pets can
also cause trouble. Pets are
not use to eating rich, high fat
foods and as a result can suffer
from indigestion, vomiting
and diarrhoea.
Even if as an owner you
are aware of the dangers remember
to tell your visitors
not to share with your pets.
And some of our favourite
festive treats – such as
Christmas cake and coffee
coated raisins, can be fatal
to our pets.
Grapes and raisins can
cause kidney failure and
macadamia nuts are particularly
toxic causing hyperthermia,
vomiting, weakness,
depression and tremors.
Dogs are more sensitive to
caffeine than people so keep
them away from coffee beans
and tea bags.
Onions, garlic and chives
can, if ingested cause irritation
to the stomach and damage
the red blood cells. Cats
are more susceptible but
dogs can be affected if a large
enough amount is consumed.
Avocados contain a substance
called persin in their
leaves, bark, fruit and seeds.
It can lead to stomach upsets
in dogs and more serious
problems in birds and
rodents.
And it is not just food, there
are a number of other hazards
that pet owners need to
be aware of at Christmas.
Many people put pot pourri
out at Christmas time or
receive it as a gift and leave
it under the tree. The oils in
pot pourri can be really toxic
to pets if ingested and can
cause neurological problems.
Some cats are fond of nibbling
on houseplants but
several of the most common
festive plants are poisonous
to cats - including holly, mistletoe,
lilies and poinsettia.
Decorations have also been
known to result in pet injuries.
Cats are notorious for
consuming tinsel and ribbon
which can become stuck in
the intestine. So never give
your pets tinsel to play with.
Shiny baubles can also
be seen by pets as toys. Remember
that some baubles
are made of glass and can
shatter and cut your pet.
And make sure your Christmas
tree is secure – cats like
climbing them!
Adoption Corner
Laddie is a small Podenco
and has had all his
injections, has a passport, a
microchip and is castrated.
He has a very sweet
temperament and is used
to other dogs, he’s ready
to go now and can travel
to the UK or elsewhere.
FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 27
Property market contracts
by Alex Trelinski
THE number of non-Spanish
property buyers fell over by
just over three per cent in the
first half of 2019, compared
to the same period last year,
according to the latest report
from the Association of
Spanish Notaries.
In total foreign buyers acquired
51,720 homes in Spain
in the first six months of the
year, compared to 53,427
the same period last year,
a decline of three point two
per cent, and the first annual
decline after seven and
a half years of uninterrupted
growth.
Spanish internal demand
also fell in the same period,
by two point eight per cent to
226,594 home sales in the first
half of 2019.
As a result, the overall market
fell by two point nine per
cent to 278,314, and foreign
demand made up 18.6 per cent
of the property market – a
share that has hardly changed
between 2013 and 2018.
Foreign demand breaks
down into non-resident buyers
with 21,210 acquisitions (41
per cent of foreign demand),
principally holiday-home buyers
from northern Europe, and
full-time residential buyers
with 30,510 purchases (59 per
cent), which feature a lot of economic
migrants from countries
like Morocco and Romania.
Non-resident demand was
down nine point seven per
cent, the third consecutive
half-yearly decline, whilst expat
demand continues to grow
(up by just under two per cent),
albeit at a much lower rate
than before.
The main destinations
for foreign buyers were the
Valencian Region, Andalucia,
and Catalunya, though
demand(especially in coastal
holiday areas) fell in Valencia
and Andalucia, but actually
went up in Catalunya.
The biggest and somewhat
dramatic falls in foreign demand
were in the Canaries
(down by 20 per cent) and the
Balearics (down by almost 14
per cent).
British buyers have continued
to dominated the foreign
market, with 6,681 purchases,
followed by purchasers from
Morocco and France.
28 FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019
www.weekender.news
Starting from scratch
SPAIN offers many different
types of properties
compared with say the
UK. Before you start looking,
you should be very
clear on the following:
1. Why are you buying?
(holiday home, investment,
somewhere to
retire…)
2. How will you spend
your time there? (relaxing,
having family come
to visit, doing sports…)
3. Are you going to rent
out the property to cover
the costs?
4. New build or a secondhand
property? Surrounded
by natives or
among fellow Brits?
by Alex Trelinski
5. Which is more important
for you: budget, location,
property type or
nearby facilities?
Types of
properties
SEASIDE APARTMENTS
These tend to be built
specifically as holiday homes.
Aside from the obvious
advantages of sun, sea and
sand, these properties generally
come with shared facilities
like swimming pools and
tennis courts, all included
within the community.
What’s more, thanks to this
they are quite easy to rent
out when you’re not there.
Research carefully because
prices can vary wildly based
on location and proximity to
the beach.
HOUSES AND VILLAS
Another option is to buy a
house in a town or city, or
the outskirts but of course
the price can still depend on
the exact location.
New builds are attractive
for their balconies and gardens,
although older properties
may cost less. Take
care, though, as the longer
ago it was built, the lower
the construction quality
and the more renovation is
needed.
Houses in residential estates:-
Also known as ‘residential
developments’, urbanisations
offer a mix of
most things you could want
– bars, restaurants and
shops – without ever having
to go too far.
There's lots of choice as
they can contain apartments,
houses and villas,
although some are smaller
and don't contain any extra
amenities.
COUNTRY HOMES
A finca or casa rural may
be the most romantic of all
Spanish dream homes, a cot-
tage with land aplenty in the
open countryside.
Often, they will be older
builds, so be sure that what
you are buying has all the
basics – running water,
sewer pipes, electricity etc. A
specialist lawyer will be able
to help you avoid any pitfalls
like the above.
Take care when
heating your home
As winter draws in and
people start heating their
properties, the Valencian
Fire Consortium have
given some advice about
safety at a time of year
when their call outs always
increase dramatically.
Almost half the house fires
they have attended this year
were between January and
April, with the numbers falling
away dramatically when
THE average house price
in Spain increased by
just over 3% in the third
quarter of the year compared
to the same period
in 2018.
The average price per
square meter is now
€1,638.30, 3.1% more than
the previous year but still
22% less than the peak in
by Simon Russell
the weather warmed up.
The biggest cause is electrical
heating appliances in
poor condition, causing shirt
circuits.
Badly ventilated appliances
such as stoves, radiators
and fires also started a number
of blazes and people need
to be aware of the dangers of
carbon monoxide build-up
by Simon Russell
2008 when the figure was
€2.101 per square metre.
However, it is a healthy
12.5% more than the low
point of €1,456 recorded
in 2014 at the peak of the
Spanish property crisis.
Market analyst Ferran
Font said that the latest
which can be fatal.
They advise householders
to check all devices, place
smoke alarms around the
property and never leave
open flames such as candles
burning overnight or if you
are likely to doze off.
Last year across Spain 123
people died in house fires,
16 of them in the Valencian
Community, a mixture of
burns and smoke inhalation.
Property prices in
steady increase
figures showed a steady upward
trend with this being
the eighteenth consecutive
month when prices have
increased.
The Valencian Community
performed above the market
average with rises of 4.6%
while the Balearics (4.8%)
had the biggest rise across
the country.
Health&Lifestyle
Stride out for better health
GET your trainers on and
hit the ground running!
Even a little bit of a jog
can cut your risk of an
early death, according to
new research.
And if more people got up
and running there would be
“substantial improvements”
in the health of the general
population, its authors say.
It seems that you don’t
have to run far or fast to
‌amount‌ ‌of‌ ‌running‌ ‌is‌ ‌linked‌
‌to‌ ‌a‌ ‌“significantly‌ ‌lower‌ ‌risk‌
‌of‌ ‌death‌ ‌from‌ ‌any‌ ‌cause”,
according to the study published
in the British Journal
of Sports Medicine.
The World Health Organisation
says that about 3.2
million deaths each year are
down to people not doing
enough physical activity.
However, the researchers
from Australia, Thailand and
make a difference. Any‌ Finland found a 27 per cent
lower risk of death from all
causes when people went for a
run, even just for a short jog.
And running was linked
to a 30 per cent lower risk
of death from cardiovascular
disease, as well as a 23 per
cent lower risk of dying from
cancer.
The researchers said: “Increased
rates of participation
in running, regardless
of its dose would probably
lead to substantial improvements
in population health
and longevity.
“Any amount of running,
even just once a week, is better
than no running, but higher
doses of running may not
necessarily be associated with
greater mortality benefits.”
Even running once a week
or less, for less than 50 minutes
each time, and at a pace
lower than six miles an hour
was linked to significant
health benefits.
“This makes ‌running‌ ‌a‌
‌potentially‌ ‌good‌ ‌option‌ ‌for‌
‌those‌ ‌whose‌ ‌main‌ ‌obstacle‌
‌to‌ ‌doing‌ ‌enough‌ ‌exercise‌ ‌is‌
‌lack‌ ‌of‌ ‌time”, ‌suggest‌ ‌the‌ ‌
researchers.‌‌‌
And they added that,
while vigorous exertion has
been linked to sudden cardiac
death, the mortality
benefit of running outweighs
the risk.
In reports on the study,
Zeljko Pedisic, its lead author
and an associate professor
of public health at Victoria
University in Australia,
was quoted saying: “You
don’t have to run fast or far
to reap the benefits.”
The research team focused
on 14 previous studies based
on six different groups of
participants, totalling more
than 230,000 people. They
were followed over periods
ranging between five and a
half ‌and‌ ‌35‌ ‌years.‌
Eye condition
that will affect
millions of us
THE leading cause of irreversible
blindness and severely
impaired eyesight is
expected to affect 77 million
people across Europe
by 2050, health experts
are warning.
The rise in cases of the degenerative
eye condition age
related macular degeneration,
or AMD for short, will
require “considerable extra
healthcare resource and
planning”.
Most of the cases will be in
people aged over 70, according
to the latest calculations,
published online in the British
Journal of Ophthalmology.
The researchers predict
that rates of the condition
will rise by 15 per cent –
from 67m in 2015 to 77m in
the middle of the century.
AMD occurs when the
small central portion of the
retina, the light-sensing tissue
at the back of the eye
deteriorates with age. When
advanced, it can be treated,
but not cured.
The damage that the condition
causes cannot be reversed.
The exact cause is
unknown. It has been linked
to smoking, high blood pressure,
being overweight and
having a family history of
AMD.
It usually first affects
people in their 50s and 60s.
And it can make everyday
activities like reading and
recognising faces difficult.
Researchers from the University
of Bonn in Germany
looked at existing rates of
the disease to try and predict
how its impact would
increase in future.
Their estimated projections
show that one in four
older adults in the EU will
have AMD.
The researchers, led by Dr
Jeany Li, warn: “This will
require considerable additional
healthcare service and
resource allocation, which
should be considered already
today in all European
healthcare systems.”
AMD is a condition in
which the macula – a part
of the light-sensing retina at
the back of the eye – begins
to wear down and fail.
Symptoms can begin with
a blurred or distorted area
of vision which may then
progress to a blank spot.
This can later lead to a
complete loss of vision in
the centre of the eyes, but
it doesn't affect peripheral
vision and as such does not
lead to total blindness.

IT’S THAT MAN AGAIN!
Late, late goal grabs all the points
Montesinos v CD Benijofar
Top hit-man Gonzalo was on the
mark again as Monte edged this top
of the table clash on Sunday.
A cold day at the ‘Cauldron’ turned
much warmer as CD Montesinos came
from behind, twice, to nick all 3 points
against their rivals for promotion.
The game started off badly when
sleepy defending allowed a sharp Benijofar
attack to slip the ball home. One
nil down with a couple of minutes gone,
Monte had yet again, given their opponents
a start.
Unperturbed by the setback, the
home side set to their task and were
rewarded when a corner on the right
picked out a totally unmarked MANU
(5) to gratefully nod in the easiest goal
he’ll score this season. From then on,
it was almost exclusively Monte, but,
pushing to take the lead gave their opponents
a chance to use their undeniable
pace on the break. Moments before
half time the inevitable happened.
Breakdown from a corner, quick break,
failure to clear, some neat passing and
the ball nestled in the corner of the
Monte goal. All the previous good work
undone, Monte needed to regroup after
the break.
HT:- CD Montesinos 1 – 2 CD
Benijofar
The second stint saw Monte huff and
puff without creating too many clearcut
chances with Benijofar employing
a very efficient off-side trap and Monte
unable to get the width the game was
crying out for. All that changed though
when a whipped cross found GONZA-
LO (22), who nodded down to an advancing
MACCAN (23) to slam home
the equaliser.
Roared on by a bumper crowd, the
game suddenly became almost oneway
traffic, with wave after wave of red
pouring over the green shirted defenders.
Just when it looked like a draw
was the likely result, a smartly taken
corner on the right caught the Benijofar
defence off-guard. Three players lined
up at the far post, but it was crowd
favourite GONZALO (22) who rose
highest to score and take his tally into
double figures for the season. Moments
later the final whistle concluded a thoroughly
entertaining game.
I’ve already had my say on slow
starts and not giving opponents respect
in previous articles, so, no need
for a repeat, but on this occasion Monte
had a something else to counter these
nagging failings, a belief that they can
win, even if they have to make it hard
for themselves sometimes. There will,
I’m sure, be other twists and turns
over this season, but this game gave a
warning to all their opponents, we are
Monte and if you give us a chance, we
will WIN.
Results for w/c 25.11.19
It was the best two scores from four with
all to count on the par 5’s that was contested
on Monday. Our winners, with 94
points were Trevor Pullyblank, Petina
Murray, Mike Mahoney and Paul Brown.
Just claiming 2nd place on countback,
with 86 points, were Olga Douglas, Pat Cassidy,
Hendrick Oldenziel and John Shervell.
There were no less than seven ‘2’s in
Wednesday’s Stableford. Too many to mention
but they know who they were! Graham
Murray took gold with 38 points (no surprise
there then) followed by Rachel Lee with 37.
John Shervell, Ken Robertson, Paul Brown
and, yes you’ve guessed it, yours truly, made
into the top six.
This week’s quote is attributed to Brian
friend Heinz Lei in mind at the time) ‘This
Thursday 21st saw Esquina Park Rangers,
up at the crack of dawn to make the 45 min
trip to Romana.
Big Paul Norton was running late as he was
still entertaining his Burd that was on his Tinder
Date, she still thinks he’s 43 years young.....
Willie Cockburn who was getting chauffeured
(As Normal) sitting in the back of Judy’s BMW
eating his Gummy Bears, was our navigator
for the day. Thinking hes taking us on the best
& quickest route took us right past a Speed
Checkpoint. The Guardia pulled us in right behind
another team member Big Darren.
Waiting for our punishment the one and only
Chester Casual Stuart flew past us grinning
like a Cheshire Cat !!!
Twenty minutes later and 150 euros each out
of pocket we eventually arrived at the ground.
Thanks to our team members they have all
agreed to pay our speeding fines out of the club
funds, Cheers Lads....The pitches were in the
middle of nowhere and it was Baltic...Four
teams were in the mini tournament with Esquina
on first against Montisinos.
A slow start from both teams due to the cold
and slippery surface, the game was looking to
be goalless until Big Tony whipped a cracking
shot into the top corner, one nil Esquina.
With Willie Cockburn thinking the Ref was
all over him like a rash, the ref eventually sent
him to the sin bin to cool down for two minutes,
which wasn’t hard to do in these temperatures....
Final Score Esquina 1 Montisinos 0....
Second game was against the hosts Hondon.
With Hondons front man running as fast as
he can we had to try to get Ray Wales to stay
with him.
Willie Cockburn opened the scoring then
Big Tony adding another two before half time,
three nil to Esquina.
Second half Esquina kept up the pressure
with Ray Wales nipping one past their keeper.
After Big Andrew Webster finally removed
his motorbike leathers he came on and finished
the game off with a goal.
Final score Esquina 5 Hondon 0.
Last game for us was against our biggest
rivals and winners of our home tournament
Portobello. Esquina were out for Revenge.....
Both teams were up for the fight, some hard
tackles from both teams with Esquina scoring
first from Welsh Ray with a cracking goal turning
their back two, to whip the ball past their
scrambling keeper... One nil to Esquina, half
time...
With the second half underway Portobellos
striker went down in our box as if hed been hit
with a shovel.
Their striker stepped up and nipped it past
Esquinas sprawling keeper Paul, who was
busy checking his tinder account.
One goal each...Ray Wales got his marching
orders from the ninety five year old ref, for abusive
language, little did the ref know he chose
the wrong man nevertheless Ray waddled of in
disbelief...Esquina kept up the pressure and
their reward paid off with big Tony scoring his
fourth of the tournament.
With Esquina well on top, all they had to do
was to keep the ball and run down the clock.
Portobello were raging as they knew time
was on our side.
Big Willie Cockburn was running down the
clock in their half, not happy with this ,one of
their players smacked big Willie on the coupon.
It was as if World War Three broke out, all
these old men looking for a Rumble even Katie
& Judi ran on with their handbags at the ready.
Once things had cooled off the ref sent Willie
off along with the Portobello player.
Esquina held on with six OAPs on the pitch
& Portobello with seven.
Final Score Esquina Park Rangers 2
Portobello 1.
EURO 2020 DRAW WEEKEND
by Alex Trelinski
England, Wales, and
Spain will find out
their group opponents
tomorrow(Saturday) when
the Euro 2020 finals draw
is held in Bucharest, Romania
starting at 6.00pm(live
on BBC 2).
England and Spain are
among the six top seeds along
with Belgium, Italy, Germany,
and the Ukraine, but irrespective
of the seeding, plenty
of tough matches are likely to
face all of them next summer.
The other qualified countries
besides Wales are
Austria, Croatia, the Czech
Republic, Denmark, Finland,
France, the Netherlands,
Poland, Portugal,
Russia, Sweden, Switzerland,
and Turkey.
Euro 2020 takes place from
June 12th to July 12th and
will be held in 12 host cities
across the continent.
The opening match will
be at the Stadio Olimpico in
Rome, Italy, and the final will
be at Wembley Stadium.
While the main tournament
draw will be held tomorrow,
we won’t know the
confirmed line-up until after
TOP OF THE WORLD
by Alex Trelinski
Rafael Nadal clinched an
emotional Davis Cup victory
for Spain over Canada when
he beat Denis Shapovalov
in front of a jubilant home
crowd in Madrid.
His 6-3 7-6 (9-7) win sealed
the title on Sunday, with Roberto
Bautista Agut returning
to the team three days after
his father’s death to put the
hosts 1-0 up.
Bautista Agut was in tears
after beating 19-year-old Felix
Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (7-3)
6-3 in the opener. Nadal’s win
gave Spain an unassailable
2-0 lead and a sixth Davis
Cup title. The world number
one won all eight of his rubbers
over the tournament
to help Spain to a first title
since 2011 and ensure local
fans were celebrating at the
end of the inaugural edition
of the competition’s revamped
version, which saw the home
team beat Great Britain in an
exciting semi-final tussle the
day before.
“An amazing week, a lot
of things we went through –
the father of Roberto passed
away... a lot of things happened,”
Nadal said. “I could
not be happier. It has been an
unforgettable moment in this
amazing stadium; we can’t
thank the crowd enough. Our
team spirit prevails.”
the play-offs in March. Scotland
and Northern Ireland
have qualified for the playoffs
and will need to progress
through the play-off path
semi-final and final to reach
next summer’s tournament.
Should Scotland beat Israel
in the play-off semifinals,
then Norway or Serbia
in the path C final, they
Spain’s returning manager
Luis Enrique says his predecessor
Robert Moreno
was “disloyal” and will not
be part of his coaching
team.
Enrique resigned from the
role in June to spend more
time with his nine-year-old
daughter Xana, who died
from bone cancer in August.
Moreno succeeded him but
told Enrique he wanted to be
in charge at Euro 2020 before
returning to assistant manager.
Moreno left the role after
Spain’s 5-0 win over Romania
on 18 November.
“The only person responsible
for Robert Moreno not
would join England in group
D at Euro 2020.
If Northern Ireland and
the Republic of Ireland both
win their path B semi-finals
– against Bosnia & Herzegovina
and Slovakia respectively
– the Irish rivals would face
each other in Belfast for a
place at next summer’s championships.
ENRIQUE SLAMS
CARETAKER
being in my coaching staff is
me,” Enrique said on Wednesday,
when he was officially
unveiled as Spain´s boss.
“He came to see me in my
house and told me he wanted
to lead the team at Euro 2020
and afterwards he would
be happy to be my assistant
coach again.
“I understand that he has
worked very hard to be the
coach and that he is ambitious
– but for me that is disloyal.
I would never do something
like that and I don’t
want someone with those
characteristics in my staff.”
“Ambition is to be encouraged
but excessive ambition
is a defect, not a virtue.”
JOAO FELIX
STRIKES GOLD
Atletico Madrid forward
Joao Felix has won the
Golden Boy award for
the best under-21 player
in Europe.
The 20-year-old Portugal
international scored 18 goals
for Benfica last season before
a 126 million euro move to
Atletico in the summer.
He has scored two goals in
10 La Liga appearances for
Atletico so far this season.
“I am very proud,” said
Felix. “It is the second time
that a player from Atletico
Madrid has won this award
and I am happy.”
The Golden Boy award
was created by Italian newspaper
Tuttosport in 2003
to recognise the best young
player in Europe.
Nominees must be under
the age of 21 and play in a
European nation’s top tier,
with Wayne Rooney and
Raheem Sterling being previous
English winners of
the award.
