Some skaters are speeding around with hockey sticks, while others are practicing technique with support. Everyone is excited: this is EKS Special. “Children with special needs have few opportunities for hobbies. My son Mats has been to a lot of ice rinks, as his sisters play ringette, but I couldn’t find a suitable group for him. I knew some other people who were interested, so I decided to establish a group for children with special needs,” says EKS Special’s mover and shaker, Teija Malk. Espoon Kiekkoseura gave her the green light, and the group started up last year. Thanks to funding from the city, participation is free. The only equipment you need is skates and a helmet. “We want to maintain a low threshold for participation. You don’t have to come every Sunday, and you can be on the ice for as long as you feel like.” So what’s the best thing about Sunday skating? “This is one of the nicest days of the week. I’ve got loads of friends here. We can pass the puck back and forth, and score goals,” says Mats. The professionals have already spotted this enthusiastic group, which has, for example, been invited to watch Kiekko- Espoo’s matches. To the children’s delight, two of the team’s “godparents,” Emma Wood and Tea Villilä, sometimes show up to Sunday practice as well. The Finnish Ice Hockey Association has also given the group an award in recognition of its activities. JAANA VAINIO 2
