Photo submitted The Family Service Center, a mental health agency serving Northbrook, Wilmette, Kenilworth and Glenview, was one of two nonprofit organizations to benefit from this year’s Greek Fest celebration in Glenview. Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church recently presented donations of $8,400 each, rasied through proceeds from the Glenview church’s annual event. Along with Family Service Center, Orthodox Christian Fellowship, a collegiate campus ministry with 200 university chapters in the U.S. and Canada, was a beneficiary of Greek Fest. “Our annual Greek Fest gives the parish an opportunity to reach out to our neighbors in Glenview and surrounding communities to share our Greek cuisine, our culture and our faith,” said Rev. Richard Demetrius Andrews, pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Church. “In addition, we want to give some of the event proceeds back to the community by selecting one local and one national or international organization each year as recipients. We are pleased to be supporting these two worthwhile organizations.” Family Service Center Executive Director Dr. Renee Dominguez said the Wilmette-based organization is “honored” to be a beneficiary of Greek Fest 2019. “We appreciate that the Saints Peter and Paul parish recognizes the value of our work in the community,” Dominguez said. “The donation will make a significant impact and allow us to deliver critical services to FSC’s clients most in need.” Family Service Center, with offices in Wilmette, provides clinical insight, individual counseling for children and adults, family counseling, student health and safety assessments, community crisis response, outreach, education and consultation. Deacon Marek Simon, executive director of Orthodox Christian Fellowship, said the donation from Saints Peter and Paul Church will aallow dozens of student to participate in a regional retreat. “OCF is grateful to Saints Peter and Paul Church for the donation, as well as the commitment from this community to supporting college students,” Simon said. “Over 60 students will attend a regional retreat this fall, which would not be possible without this gracious gift.” OCF provides students with a home away from home, opportunities to learn about their Orthodox faith and skills to be effective Orthodox leaders. Student life on campus focuses on four key areas: fellowship, education, worship and service. Sts. Peter and Paul Church will host the 2020 Glenview Greek Fest on Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26, on its church grounds at 1401 Wagner Road. Barbara Schilling Stanton rings the bell at North Shore Country Day School in 1963. Photo submitted NSCDS offers reward for bell stolen in 1978 Submitted by North Shore Country Day School North Shore Country Day is once again initiating a $500 reward for information that would lead to the recovery of the 168-pound bronze bell given to the school in 1962 and stolen in 1978. The bell was a gift from the Otto and Dorothy Schilling family. In the summer of 1962, the Schilling family — including Barbara (NSCD Class of 1963) — took a trip to Europe. While in Germany, they stopped at her uncle’s bell foundry in Heidelberg. She was so taken with the beautiful bells that she thought North Shore Country Day should have one of its own. Her father Otto Schilling, inspired by his family’s history as bell makers, designed and selected the specific ringtones for the school bell he commissioned to be cast by his younger brother Friedrich Schilling. The bell was delivered on Dec. 31, 1962. “We all have been waiting anxiously for the arrival of our new bell and it was a moment of joy for those who were here when it arrived on the day before New Years,” wrote Headmaster Nathaniel French to Friedrich in early January 1963. “Happily, Barbara was here at school and so was able to enjoy its unpacking with the rest of us.“ arbara Schilling Stanton of Golden, Colorado, remembers ringing it for the first time after it had been hung outside the school’s auditorium in the spring of her senior year. “The bell was beautiful,” she said. “The name of the school encircled the top with the school crest below.” Beginning the following school year, the bell was used to signal the beginning of classes each day, to call students to the daily assembly and for special events. The bell rang for the last time during the early hours of Nov. 28, 1978. Headmaster Douglas McDonald, who lived in Wavering House at the northwest corner of campus, heard it ring once and fell back asleep. In the morning, the bell was gone. Despite reporting the theft to the Winnetka Police and offering a reward of $500 for its return, the bell was never recovered. If you have information about its whereabouts, contact communications@ nscds.org, or call (847) 441-3337.
