Now, with the holiday season in full swing, they are adding an extra layer of warmth to the Village of Wilmette by spearheading two philanthropic initiatives — a non-perishable food drive for the New Trier Township Food pantry and a “Buy One, Get One” glove deal for Connections for the Homeless — an Evanston-based organization that oversees two local shelters. From now until Saturday, Dec. 14, shoppers who bring-in non-perishable items for the Township pantry, will be entered into a raffle to win a brand new Patagonia sweater. These layering jackets provide all the warmth needed on a cold day with none of the bulk. Raffle tickets will be distributed per item. Zee Barry, and Mimi and Patty Evans, co-owners and sisters, reported that the most needed pantry items of the moment are cookies, granola bars, pasta sauce, canned soups, salad dressings, condiments, cleaning supplies and laundry detergent. The sisters agreed that their desire to give-back is a reflection of their gratitude they feel for remaining so welcomed in the community for over six decades. Alexa Burnell/22nd Century Media “We feel so fortunate for all the years we have had here in Wilmette,” Barry said. “We want to spread that good feeling and good cheer to others, while inspiring all our friends and neighbors to give to those less fortunate, particularly during the holiday season.” When Jack Macholll, New Trier Township communications director, caught wind of the goodwill, he was thrilled to hear how this local and revered business decided to step up for the sake of others. “A collection like the one that Lad & Lassie is running sends a signal to members of the community that we’re all in this together,” Macholl said. “When business owners share some of their profit it not only helps neighbors make ends meet, but really strengthens our communities.” In addition to the food drive, Lad & Lassie’s BOGO glove deal, running through Dec. 22, means that when a shopper purchases a pair of gloves, one pair will be donated to Connections Nia Tavoularis, Connection’s director of development, explained how Lad & Lassie’s goodwill warms hands and hearts this holiday season. “Through collection drives, donations, volunteering, and advocacy the entire community can play a role in the work we do at Connections for the Homeless. At Connections our mission is to catalyze the community to end homelessness, one person at a time and our partnership with Lad & Lassie puts that mission into action,” Tavoularis said. She added that in the month of October, Connections had more than 400 neighbors visit one of the organization’s two drop-in centers. “Donations like gloves and other warm clothing not only help keep our neighbors experiencing homelessness safer in the cold, they also allows our staff to fill basic needs,” Tavoularis said. Lad and Lassie is located at 1115 Central Ave. in Wilmette. Stop in and bring your donations for the NTT Pantry during regular business hours listed on their website until Dec. 14. At the same time, purchase a pair of gloves, and know a second pair will go to someone in need through Dec. 22. Lad & Lassie has a full supply of kids waterproof snow gloves and competitively priced gloves and mittens for tiny tots, teens and everyone in-between. Learn more at ladandlassie.com.
