Adopt-a-Family
On Saturday, Dec. 7,
over 100 local families will
be coming together to ensure
hundreds of Chicago
families have the Christmas
they deserve this year.
On this day from 9-11 a.m.,
participants in Kenilworth
Union Church’s Adopt-a-
Family program will fill a
Saper reveals many of
the details of her family’s
escape, including an
“Argo”-like flight to freedom,
in “From Miniskirt
to Hijab: A Girl in Revolutionary
Iran.”
“I always wanted to write
this memoir. What I experienced
was very unusual,”
Saper said. “I came of age
during the pre-revolution
and grew up as a teenager
very much like a western
girl. Iran was extremely
pro-American and then it
went the other way.”
After living in Houston,
Texas, for a short time and
Skokie for five years, Saper
and her family moved to
Wilmette in 1992. Her two
children went through the
truck with both needed and
wished-for items to benefit
the families of Christopher
House, a nonprofit serving
Chicago’s low-income
families. The truck will
be driven to Christopher
House later that same day.
This is Kenilworth
Union’s 26th year participating
in the program,
which Christopher House
calls Family-to-Family. A
record-breaking 113 local
families volunteered to
buy presents, some choosing
to help two or even
three families.
The church’s early investment
in the program
also helped it to grow into
the robust program it currently
is.
Kenilworth Union’s
Adopt-a-Family program
is headed up by Liz Dischner,
of Wilmette, and
Jessica LeFebvre, of Winnetka.
“I love Wilmette. It’s
my home. I love going to
the library, the beautiful
Gillson Park,” Saper said.
“I’m very proud to be in
Wilmette. It’s accessible to
downtown by train. I think
it has the best of all.”
Once Saper got serious
about the book, she began
putting in long days and
nights as it took about four
years of concentrated effort
to complete. It was officially
released in October
and two months prior on
Amazon. She’s been making
the rounds promoting
the book with speaking
engagement at bookstores,
schools and other locations.
“The response has been
very good. I’m finally at
a place in my life where
I feel mature enough to
write it,” Saper said. “It
was a process to write this
story and I was very careful
to be respectful to any
ideology mentioned in the
book. Everything had to
be 100 percent true. I’ve
had Muslim friends tell
me they love the book.
I’ve concentrated on being
factual and not taking any
sides.”
