New Trier’s LitFest serves as inspiration for students

about someone’s experiences
are great ways to
learn.
New Trier High School
students with an interest in
writing would agree.
About 300 members of
the senior class attended
New Trier’s annual LitFest
held Nov. 8 at its Winnetka
campus to learn about the
journeys that 20 journalists,
book authors, filmmakers,
scriptwriters and
poets took to becoming
successful in their craft.
Students gave the day
an overall two-thumbs up
for what they learned at
the various workshops, including
things that cannot
be obtained in a regular
school classroom. Some
referred to it as a type of
“real world” mentoring.
More importantly, the
sessions helped students
realize they can accomplish
similar achievements
NOTICE OF PROPOSED PROPERTY
TAX INCREASE FOR AVOCA SCHOOL
DISTRICT NO. 37
I. A public hearing to approve a proposed property tax
increase for Avoca School District No. 37 for 2019 will be held
on December 19, 2019, at 6:15 p.m. at the Joseph M. Porto
Community Center, 2921 Illinois Road, Wilmette, Illinois.
Any person desiring to appear at the public hearing and present
testi.mony to the taxing district may contact Kaine Osburn,
Superinten.dent (telephone 847-251-3587).
II. The corporate and special purpose property taxes extended
or abated for the year 2018 were $13,295,926.
The proposed corporate and special purpose property taxes to
be lev.ied for 2019 are $13,927,480. This represents a 4.75%
increase over the previous year.
III. The property taxes extended for debt service and public
build.ing commission leases for 2018 were $762,996.
The estimated property taxes to be levied for debt service and
public building commission leases for 2019 are $728,363.
This represents a 4.5% decrease over the previous year.
IV. The total property taxes extended or abated for 2018 were
$14,058,922.
The estimated total property taxes to be levied for 2019 are
$14,655,843. This represents a 4.25% increase over the
previous year.

English writing students to
experience something outside
the normal classroom
and see how others [writers]
got to where they are
and hear what they have to
say about their successes
and even struggles,” said
Winnetka’s Mitch Shelmam,
who was interested
in film. “The sessions were
good.”
Winnetka’s Ben Portland
agreed. He especially
liked Roy Guzman’s workshop,
“Reimaging through
Metaphor” and Allison Joseph’s
session about poets.
“It is awesome to have
the opportunity to listen
to professionals involved
in different areas of writing,”
Portland said. “I
liked learning more about
using metaphors. It will
help me develop ideas in
my writing and might even
assist me with my college
essays.”
Wilmette’s Katie Mark
attended Rachel De-
Woskin’s “Bad Heroes and
Good Villans” workshop.
“I liked the way she
talked about stories that
had characters who were
not totally perfect,” Mark
said. “These sessions are
a good way to hear from
professional writers and
how they achieved success.”
Wilmette’s Greer
MacKenzie also attended
the session.

Kenilworth’s Emily
Wang found Erisa Apantaku’s
workshop about
podcasting interesting.
“We learned things we
never knew about podcasting,”
Wang said. “Apantaku
called the levels of
creating a podcast ingredients
and encouraged us to
try something new.”
“We always do a lot
of nonfiction writing in
school so one of the sessions
I attended was especially
interesting,” Wilmette’s
Hannah Bender
said.
