Rumors that e-commerce giant Amazon is

eyeing a former Procter & Gamble distribution

a “last-mile” fulfillment center appear to

have some basis in fact.

Though no lease has been signed and

no permits have been applied for, Amazon

“definitely has an interest” in the

development coordinator.

Ms. Ford said a representative of the

Seattle-based company visited Iowa City

2500 Heinz Road. The facility would likely

be used as a delivery station, one of Amazon’s

smaller-scale fulfillment centers

where orders are prepared for last-mile

delivery to customers.

The news comes as Amazon seeks to

overhaul its national delivery infrastructure

to provide faster shipping and reduce

reliance on third-party carriers like UPS.

by the Iowa Women’s Foundation

(IWF). It was created to explore the

tactics and strategies that can help

care-related issues. The Chamber

has partnered with IWF to arrange

less engaged on the job, switch

workforce altogether.

Nearly all Iowa businesses face

a workforce gap. According to

Iowa Workforce Development,

there were 65,877 open jobs across

Iowa in May of 2018. Today, there

are 38,672 Iowa jobs listed on

indeed.com. Because of our state’s

employee shortfall, there is an

estimated $675 million in unrealized

annual GDP. In the race to attract

and retain talent, Iowa businesses

have the opportunity to innovate

around female- and family-friendly

policies and benefits to gain a

competitive edge.

Iowa’s Workforce Shortage and

Child Care Crisis are Interrelated.

Three-quarters of Iowa families

with children under the age of six

have all available parents working

outside of the home, yet almost a

quarter of Iowans live in an area

undersupplied with licensed or

registered child care options. The

results paint a clear picture of how

workforce development is hindered

by a lack of child care: of these

families, 65% of parents are late

to work or leave early because of

child care issues. Employees miss

an average of nearly two weeks

of work per year due to the same

problems.

focused on employee development (both personal and

technical), networking and mentoring. Ultimately, the

group’s goals and initiatives benefit all employees, as evidenced

through two mentoring programs.

The YPG’s traditional mentoring program, launched in

January, paired senior mentors with junior mentees. Applications

were used so pairs could be formed based on

goals and mutual interests. For six months, each pair will

meet at least monthly to create an action plan focused primarily

on the development of the younger member.

The YPG’s innovative reverse mentoring program

will kick off this spring. Senior staff will be paired with

young employees based on random selection. This program

will focus on recruiting and retention, company

culture and use of technology and social media. Meetings

will focus on what skills the company’s senior leadership

can learn from its youngest employees, as well

as teach participants how to switch roles in the conversation.

Participants will learn that the ability to reverse

the direction of the conversation is just as important

to building skills as the topics they discuss. •

West Des Moines-based Veenstra & Kimm — with offices

in Cedar Rapids in Coralville — is ramping up its dedication

to education. Vice President Steven Thompson said

that while the company has made an effort to generate

more interest in the industry, a formal plan is already in

the works.

“For a long time, no one was available to really be able

do this,” he said, “but we’re looking at having a formal

program within the next 12 to 18 months. We’re excited.”

Mr. Thompson has given presentations over the years

for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)

programs at junior and high schools, but he hopes to

expand that program soon. The same goes for the firm’s

internship programs at area universities.

“We’ve had informal internships at our Coralville office

with University of Iowa students or our West Des

Moines headquarters with Iowa State, but it’s never really

been formalized,” he said.

“Internships are great for both the students and the

company,” Mr. Thompson added. “It’s like a paid job

interview and we use them as recruiting tools. But we

have to really fight for that talent. Firms from all over the

country recognize that we have great talent right here in

Iowa; we want to keep that talent right here at home.” •

INDIAN CREEK NATURE CENTER

A Natural Fit

F

rom small meetings to company

retreats, the Indian Creek Nature

Center in Cedar Rapids can

accommodate a variety of corporate needs.

According to Liz Zabel, marketing manager,

that is what makes it a perfect location.

“We are able to offer something for

everybody,” she said. “We like to go above

and beyond when it comes to our facilities.”

The Nature Center has 10 different

meeting areas available, highlighted by

a 150- to 200-seat auditorium for more

standard presentations.

Although there is a catering kitchen

on-site, the Nature Center welcomes

groups that bring their own food, provided

no Styrofoam is used in any packaging,

Zabel said.

The Nature Center’s setting provides

clients with the option to connect with

nature, especially at Amazing Space, a

new building and campus that opened in

September 2016.

“We offer some very unique venues and

opportunities both inside and outside,”

Zabel said, highlighting the Bird Room as

a peaceful space to take a break and relax

during a meeting or conference.

Amazing Space is in the process of

achieving the Living Building Challenge

— an environmental certification that

stands above LEED as the world’s most

rigorous proven building performance

standard. Achieving this certification

means the building is regenerative to

the environment— rather than having a

negative or even neutral impact, a Living

Building creates a positive impact on the

human and natural system it interacts with.

For the past two years, the Nature Center

has achieved Net Zero Energy by producing

more energy than the facility uses through

the use of on-site solar panels, as well as

Net Zero Water by capturing and reusing

all water that falls on the site.

As part of its team-building activities, the

Nature Center gives groups the opportunity to

participate in service projects and interactive

programs. Service projects can range from

simple brush clearing and cleaning to more

complicated tasks such as construction of

a rain shelter. Interactive programs, such

as GPS utilization, can be conducted at the

center or at a business’ facility.

With its outdoor facilities the Nature

Center offers much more than just a

standard space to hold a business meeting.

“It’s an amazing place,” Zabel said.

“Being out in nature, you can walk the

trails, you’re connecting with people in a

very unique way. It’s peaceful…a great way

to open your mind.” •

Annual All Stars

“Talent attraction and workforce development.” It seems these

words are in almost every business news headline. Finding and

developing the talent to run and grow your business is a challenge

that is significantly impacting today’s Corridor businesses.

Our region’s industry-driven sector collaborations in partnership

with Kirkwood Community College created ALL STARS of ICR. The

magazine honors twelve young people, selected by the region’s six

industry sector boards, who are making an impact in Eastern Iowa’s

key industries and bringing occupations with critical workforce

shortages to the forefront to grow our region’s talent pipelines.

September 2019

The Chamber’s annual Sponsorship

Campaign is almost underway! The funds

received during the campaign allow us to

continue our current programs and events,

as well as plan for the future as we embark

on our reinvention of the Chamber in the

coming months.

When sales open on September 9,

Chamber staff will begin contacting you

to introduce you to changes we’re making

to some of our events and programs, and

to outline all the opportunities available

with our most popular existing programs.

This year is lucky number 13 for the

Chamber’s sponsorship campaign, and

we are grateful for all the support we

have received from local businesses as a

result. Before we held annual campaigns,

sponsorships were obtained throughout

the year on an as-needed basis. This

made it difficult for businesses to plan

financially, and it resulted in a small

sector of the membership receiving the

opportunity to sponsor our events and

programs.

Running a campaign in the same limited

window each year allows all members

Sponsorship allows local businesses to put their name and support behind a variety of

programs and events held by the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, including at our

to see a full menu of events, programs,

committees, initiatives, and opportunities

to sponsor, with a variety of price levels and

benefits to choose from. Whether it’s by

sponsoring an email banner ad, a table at our

Annual Banquet, or our Chamber Reinvention

Initiative, please consider supporting the

Chamber’s mission to foster a better business

environment throughout Johnson County. A

list of sponsorship opportunities can be found

at iowacityarea.com. Please contact Emily

Wenzel at emily@iowacityarea.com to learn

more about how you can help strengthen your

Chamber for the years ahead.

It’s finally time for us to have a ribbon cutting of

our own!

Join us in our new location on the lower level of

MERGE on Thursday, September 5. The event kicks

off at 4:00 p.m. with tours of our office and plenty

of refreshments. At 5:00, President & CEO Kim

Casko and 2019 Board Chair Shawn Meaney will

give remarks and cut the ribbon.

Hope to see you there!

he Greater Iowa City Area HBA launched its Young

Professionals Network (YPN) with a June 18 social at Tin Roost

in North Liberty. YPN is an initiative started earlier this year by the

National Association of Home Builders. The aim is to connect with,

mentor and enhance the careers and businesses for the next generation

of the homebuilding industry.

Besides those age 35 or younger, the gathering featured several seasoned

Iowa City Area HBA mentors. The Spaghetti Marshmallow

Challenge served as a fun ice breaker, with groups of four experiencing

real-world skills of teamwork and problem solving to build a standalone

tower as high as possible from 20 sticks of dry spaghetti, one yard

of string, one yard of masking tape and a marshmallow – which had

to top the creation. Winning with a structure 28 inches tall was Nolan

Navar from Nolan’s Lawn Care; Taylor Goetschius and Brogan Messer

of Kitchens By Design; and Riley Marvin of Alpha Landscapes.

As part of our Sponsorship

Campaign, we offer special

membership pricing to encourage

more businesses to join the Chamber.

If you become a member during the

campaign, we waive the $50 one-time

sign-up fee and give you the rest of

2019 for free!

James Robinson of McCreedy-Ruth Construction welcomes social

attendees and provides more information on the YPN effort.

James Robinson, organizer for our YPN, noted the

group is a perfect opportunity for those beginning

their careers to get involved with the HBA. “The

YPN is important because there is really no group or

council specifically targeting young or new members.

It will be an avenue to feel involved from the very

first meeting and a way to branch out through

ambassadors’ and mentors’ guidance,” he said. “Our

goals are to get involved in the community, mentor

high school and college students and further our

careers through the HBA.”

Thank you to food and beverage sponsors HBA Iowa,

PSC Distribution/Studio H2O and Sobaski Abbey

events. Watch social media and Builders News for details.
