School pupils part of
Ripapa Island reopening
LYTTELTON PRIMARY School
pupils retraced the footsteps of
Ngāti Wheke ancestors on Ripapa
Island last Wednesday.
The island, which is tucked
close to the shore of Lyttelton
Harbour, has been closed since
the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
But now, it will be accessible by
the public over summer.
Its opening was celebrated by
Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Minister
of Conservation Eugenie Sage,
Department of Conservation
The Redcliffs Residents
Association has launched
an “eco-village” initiative
in response to our
climate and ecological
emergency. Member
Dave Bryce promotes
awareness about the
importance of increasing
our native plants.
Many people wonder why
they should consider planting
natives rather than exotics.
staff, residents and pupils.
Said Ms Sage: “I am delighted
to join Ngāti Wheke and DOC in
officially welcoming some of the
first visitors back to this tōpuni
site.”
She said Ripapa is less known
by Cantabrians than the island
deserves, mainly because the
island can currently only be accessed
by boat.
“DOC and Ngāti Wheke are
exploring ways to enable more
people to visit and enjoy this
special place.”
Simply put, most of our
natives are unique to New
Zealand and help to define our
identity as a nation. Some have
threatened status and would
be a loss to the world unless we
prevent them from dying out.
Native plants also provide us
many benefits, including materials,
food, medicine, beauty,
erosion control, water purification,
carbon dioxide capture,
and more - and yet we don’t
know what benefits are still to
HISTORY: Ngāti Wheke spokeswoman Yvette
Couch-Lewis shares stories of Maori ancestors with
Lyttelton Primary School pupils on Ripapa Island.
Native plants essential to ecosystems
be discovered.
They also have their
own built-in ecosystems of
other native plants, birds, bats,
lizards, insects and microorganisms,
which have all
lived in harmony with them
for thousands of years.
Some scientists now say
original ecosystems should
be returned to 30 per cent of
all our lands, in order that
humans may live sustainably
on the earth. With Canterbury
having very low extents of
original ecosystems, apart
from alpine ecosystems, we
need to restore lots of native
plants. The best time for planting
is in Autumn or Winter
so roots will grow deep into
moist soils, so plan now for
planting next Autumn, or
plant now if you can water
weekly over Summer.
Native flora and fauna are
our heritage, to enhance, enjoy
and care for.
