VAAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGYANNUAL REPORT 2018Social And EnvironmentalSustainabilityOur Social and Environmental Sustainability approach is integralto the broader institutional strategic direction. Through thiseffort, the University expressly commits itself to the continuity,primarily of the academic project of the University. The followingare sustainability activities which are aligned to the broaderinstitutional strategy:1. The University continues with the re-curriculation project.Thus far, several new programmes have been implemented.The new cohorts enrolled in the new programmes are intheir second academic year. The re-curriculation project isconsidered part of our commitment to the sustainabilityof teaching and learning. With ever complex and changingeconomic environment, Universities are expected to developand provide fitting student graduates to the economy. Wethus believe that continuous re-curriculation enables us toconstantly evaluate relevance and fitness of purpose of allour offerings.2. Quality teaching, learning and research relies heavily onadequate infrastructure. Through our Campus Master Plan,we have articulated our desired growth points to complementthe needs for teaching, learning and research.Over the years, Vanderbijlpark Campus which is the seat ofthe University has grown substantially. The impact of growthon quality teaching and learning is considered substantial aswell as a risk for University sustainability. We have thus set ourfocus and priorities on the growth path for the University. Theseincludes the recently acquired Quest Conference Centre as wellas prioritization of the Science and Technology Park in Sebokengas our future growth points. The construction of the new Facultyof Education facilities is already underway in Sebokeng.of the project will go a long a way to meeting our “GreenInitiative” commitments.• With the support of the Local Government SETA, ourCentre for Renewable Energy has been engaged withseveral local municipalities on waste-water treatmentsolutions. The increasing scarcity of water is consideredone of the University’s sustainability risks.4. To ensure continuous development of staff and opportunitiesfor growth, the University has, as part of its strategic focus,adopted the Institutional Transformation Plan which isconsidered the guiding map amongst others for: policyreview and development, training and development, studentsupport, and community engagement. The plan also expressesthe University’s overall commitment to transformation.Given the complex nature of the sustainability challenges, theUniversity will have to consider several measures which mayinclude the review of the organizational efficiency andeffectiveness models, financial sustainability models as well as thedevelopment of new models for the future of our sites ofdelivery.We are committed to ensure sustainability of the University.PROFESSOR IL RENSBURGADMINISTRATOR3. With the increasing cost of energy as well as associatedenvironmental risks, the University has adopted thefollowing initiatives:• Through the campus master plan, the University has adoptedthe “Green Initiative”. This initiative commits the Universityto ensure all its future infrastructure projects will be “GreenInitiative” compliant with decreased reliance on coal-drivenenergy and more aligned to alternative renewable energy.• We have already initiated a pilot project on solar energysupport. The project is coordinated by the Faculty ofEngineering. We anticipate that the successful completion27
VAAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGYANNUAL REPORT 2018SECTION 7STATEMENT ON WORKERAND STUDENTPARTICIPATIONThe Association of Governing Bodies of Universities and Colleges describe shared governance as the process by which variousconstituents (traditionally governing boards, senior administration, and faculty; possibly also staff, students, or others) contribute todecision making related to college or University policy and procedure. In South Africa the concept of co‐operative governance wasadopted in the Education White Paper 3: A Programme for the Transformation of Higher Education, and other early conceptualizations ofthe concept of shared governance. The Vaal University of Technology, in tandem with these and in keeping also with the King IV Codeon Corporate Governance, believes in stakeholder participation and involvement in transacting business. Unions and SRC involvementin some key decision‐making processes is evidence of this. Human Resource policies on recruitment and selection also prescribeinvolvement of Unions and the Institutional Forum in staff appointments. The Vaal University of Technology has also made it mandatorythat all policy approval processes and procedures are consulted widely with relevant stakeholders prior to approval by Council.PROFESSOR IL RENSBURGADMINISTRATOR28
