Holmes Murphy’s talent developmentprogram targets Iowa studentsThe Brainery, an eight-week talent development program designedto provide new hires the knowledge, connections and opportunityneeded to launch their insurance industry careers, is making adifference for Waukee-based Holmes Murphy, winner of the 2019Award for “Best Hiring Strategies of Iowa Graduates.”Holmes Murphy operates from 14 locations in 10 states, but putsa great deal of emphasison hiring from Iowainstitutions. The companyrecruits on-campusand via job boards atthe University of Iowa,Iowa State University,Drake University andGrandview University.Over the past two years,the company has hiredand retained 19 IowaBest Hiring Strategiesof Iowa GraduatesHOLMES MURPHYgraduates into the Brainery program, representing the four schoolsnamed above, plus Wartburg College, Central College and the Universityof Northern Iowa.“Holmes Murphy has done a lot over the past several years tocultivate a program where college graduates can thrive,” said SeniorVice President and Cedar Rapids Market Leader Kari Cooling.As the company’s website explains it, “Our philosophy is to hiretop talent, then teach them what they need to know about the insuranceindustry and our client base. So, instead of starting the jobat a desk – we start in the classroom!”Participants learn technical insurance knowledge, prepare for obtainingan insurance license and refine their professional communicationand presentation skills. In addition to personally meetingindustry thought leaders and getting to tap into their expertise, theclass learns and grows together, forming relationships that may lastfor class members’ entire careers.Armed with knowledge and connections, Brainery participantsfind plenty of opportunity for growth during the class and beyond.Upon graduation from the Brainery, participants transition intoeither a client service or sales role, ready to make a difference forcustomers and add value to their teams.
