VILLAGE HEROES
THE BERLINERS
Martin and Gail Berliner have been
residents of Orchard Hills for 42 years in
a house at the end of the S. Berry Lane
cul-de-sac. The front of the property
overlooks the pond in Orchard Hills Park.
42 years ago, the neighbors and the
Village asked the Berliners if they would
grant a 5 ft. wide easement so the Village
could build a small foot and bicycle trail
from S. Berry Lane to Orchard Hills Park.
They gladly said yes as an amenity for
neighbors and the Village.
After 42 years, the trail was in poor
condition and because it was so narrow,
the Village needed to hand shovel when
there was a snowstorm. The Village asked
if the Berliners would consider adding another 3 ft. to the
existing easement so the Village could put in a new, wider
trail made of concrete with a concrete curb. The wider trail
would allow the Village’s snowplow to clear the trail. The
new widened trail would also be much safer for pedestrians
and bicycles.
The Berliners willingly gave the additional 3 ft. easement to
the Village.
On Oct. 8, 2019, more than 25 neighbors gathered to
celebrate the Berliners generous easement gifts and the
reopening of the rebuilt trail.
