BEST OF PERU
Once the most important city of the
Spanish viceroyalty, Lima is the largest
city in Peru and is still its most important.
Discover the colonial architecture of the
Government Palace, the town hall, the
Archbishop’s Palace, and the largest
collection of religious art in America at the
San Francisco monastery. Continue to the
Miraflores district with its coastal views,
and discover the pre-Inca ruins at Huaca
Pucllana. Afterwards enjoy a guided tour
of the Larco Museum, housing one of the
biggest collections of pre-Columbian
artefacts. Journey down to the Sacred
Valley and visit Cuzco, South America’s
oldest continuously inhabited city, and
Chinchero, where colonial temples
are built on Incan foundations. At
Ollantaytambo, stone terraces rise
steeply from the edge of town up to the
hilltop fortress ruins. Travel by train and
bus to the remarkable ‘Lost City of the
Incas’, Machu Picchu, where stone blocks
fit together perfectly without any mortar.
Take the bus along the snow-capped
Andes to Puno and sail to the Uros
Islands of Lake Titicaca, then on to
Taquile Island, where the locals have
maintained their traditions and culture
over centuries.

LAND OF THE INCAS
Founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro
as ‘The City of the Kings’, Lima is one of
South America’s largest cities, boasting
splendid colonial architecture and worldclass
museums. Explore the Peruvian
capital’s sights, including the Plaza de
Armas; it’s home to some of the city’s
most impressive architecture, such
as the Government Palace and the
Archbishop’s Palace. Visit the San
Francisco monastery, which houses the
catacombs. Travel to Cuzco (once the
capital of the Inca Empire) in the Sacred
Valley, see the royal hacienda of Tupac
Inca Yupanqui in Chinchero, and the ruins
of a huge Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo.
Take a train journey through the
Urubamba Valley and then a bus up to
the UNESCO-listed Machu Picchu, one
of the most impressive sites in the world.
At Puno visit the floating Uros Islands
on Lake Titicaca, where the inhabitants
live as their ancestors did. Colca Canyon
is one of the world’s deepest, with
views of the Misti, Chachani, Ampato
and (still active) Sabancaya volcanoes.
Tour the ‘White City’ of Arequipa, with
its Baroque buildings crafted from white
volcanic stone.
