There are holidays and then there’s Sovereign

Costa Navarino
For olive groves and the Olympics
WHERE IT IS
Venture to the sparkling Ionian Sea on the southwest coast of
mainland Greece, where you’ll find secluded soft sand beaches,
picturesque historic villages, and undulating hills of olive groves
and vineyards that soak up the warm sun. Everything about
Peloponnese and indeed the resort town of Costa Navarino
feels quintessentially Greek.
WHAT TO DO
There’s something to do for all ages. You can explore the rugged
coastline with trips to coves and sea caves, charter a sailing boat for
a picnic lunch in a quiet bay, or try the local wines with a wine-tasting
tour at a nearby vineyard. Also, a short drive away are epic UNESCO
World Heritage sites, including the archaeological sites of Mystras and
the Temple of Apollo Epicurius.
Head to the ancient ruins of the town of Olympia, where the first
Olympic games was hosted and where you can learn about the
history of this great sporting event, or explore Mycenae, which is
awash with Greek mythology at the Palace of Nestor.
There are pretty little villages where you can stop and tuck into a
tasty Greek meal and have a cool drink in a lively taverna, or you
can simply spend hours sunbathing on the beach.
WHERE TO STAY
The Westin Resort Costa Navarino
This absolutely stunning hotel is located in an
intimate setting ensconced by abundant nature and
overlooking one of four 18-hole golf courses. Many of
the suite rooms at The Westin Resort Costa Navarino
come with their own beachfront infinity pool.
Ideal for families, there are two swimming pools with
built-in waterfalls, a kids’ club, and a tennis club.
You’re just a five-minute walk from a large beach, where
the vibrant blue waters extend up to the mountains. It’s here
where you can try paddle boarding and windsurfing. Or
should you wish for a more adventurous experience, you
can go rock climbing and mountain biking in the environs.
The Anazoe Spa and Thalassotherapy provides an
incredible menu of treatments, including floating pools,
hydrotherapy, ice grotto rooms, light therapies, herbal
saunas, and mist showers. The resort serves up excellent
cuisine with sunset views and candlelight settings, such
as the beach-based Barbouni, authentic Greek recipes
at Perovino, or fusion-meets-traditional homemade
dishes at Kooc - Taverna Secrets.

Menorca
For peaceful shores and a natural escape
WHERE IT IS
WHERE TO STAY
They say good things come in small packages - and that’s
Menorca, a small island in the Balearic archipelago, off eastern
Spain. Just 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, it’s not that large,
yet it still boasts over 100 beaches, many of which have the
Blue Flag accolade.
WHAT TO DO
The beauty of its size is that all the activities on offer are within
easy reach, and you can hike to places that are inaccessible
by car, such as the island’s highest point, El Toro, which has
wonderful views. Alternatively, you can take a jeep tour and visit
lesser-known gems.
The beaches and bays are where Menorca truly excels, with
pine-backed beaches like Cala Macarella, the fine white sands
of Punta Prima, and the rocky playgrounds of Cala Mitjana.
Head to Parc Natural de s'Albufera des Grau, a nature reserve
where you can pack a picnic and spend the day bird-watching,
kayaking, and snorkelling. There are two main towns in Menorca,
Mahon and Ciutadella, which equally boast restaurant-lined
harbours to tuck into Spanish tapas, as well as boutique shops,
bars, and local markets.
If you want more from your nightlife then there's always the
Cova d’en Xoroi caves, where you can dance in the caves
while sipping cocktails!

Villa Le Blanc, a Gran Meliá Hotel
Ciutadella Harbour
One of the Leading Hotels of the World, and Menorca’s
first grand luxury hotel, the five-star Villa Le Blanc is

right on the beach, there's impeccable views over the
crystalline Mediterranean Sea and delightful outdoor

Halkidiki
For traditional Grecian charm and adventure

Lying in the north of mainland Greece, Halkidiki is home to three
jutting peninsulas where the rich foliage of Mediterranean forest ebbs
away into sheltered bays, secret coves, unspoilt sandy beaches, and
the azure Aegean Sea. With 300 miles of coastline, this is a place
where you can get away from it all and immerse yourself in nature
and sunshine.
WHAT TO DO
When you’re not unwinding on Blue Flag beaches, you can sail
around Mount Athos, home to ancient Byzantine monasteries.
Or unearth the region’s archaeological sites, including the ancient
city of Stagira where Aristotle was born, and Olynthus, which boasts
beautifully preserved mosaic floors.
In the westernmost point of Halkidiki lies Kassandra, home to a lively
night scene, while in the east of the region, you’ll find the authentic
Greek town of Ouranoupolis, with its quaint square that hosts
evening markets.
Dotted throughout the streets are tucked-away tavernas offering
traditional meze and freshly caught seafood, and pine forests and
olive groves that can be explored by foot or bike.
Sani Resort
Experience beachside bliss at the sophisticated
Sani Resort, which lies on a 1,000-acre ecological
reserve and is surrounded by spectacular sandy
beaches and emerald-green pine forests.
There’s a wide range of deluxe accommodation
options to suit families, friends, and couples, with plenty
of activities, including archery, bird-watching,
volleyball, sailing, dancing, watersports, fishing trips,
wine-tasting, and yacht cruises.
In the summer months there are special courses
to be found at the Bear Grylls’ Survival Academy,
Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy, and Chelsea
Football Club Foundation Academy.
In the heart of the resort lies Sani Marina, home to
upmarket restaurants, bars, and boutique shops.

Corfu
For that quintessential Greek island experience
WHERE IT IS
The Greek island of Corfu lies in the entrance to the Adriatic Sea,
straddling Albania and the Greek mainland, and Italy. In its unique
position, the island has had a rich history of rulers, which in turn
shaped Corfu into a melange of culture. It’s also considered the
greenest of the Greek islands, with two million olive trees planted
across its rolling hills, and mountains swathed in pine forests. On
the coast lie many tucked away coves and hidden beaches.
WHAT TO DO
With such incredible resorts, you might be tempted to do very
little else than relax on the beach and daydream. But if you do
feel like exploring then you can wander into the UNESCO World
Heritage site of picturesque Corfu Town for shopping, eating,
and cultural entertainment.
You’ll always find top-notch diving, kayaking and other
watersports on offer, which are suitable for beginners
and enthusiasts alike.

Part of a prestigious collection of hotels and resorts,

adults-only haven with chic decor, sumptuous amenities,
and picture-perfect views at every turn. Set within a garden
that's home to hundred-year-old olive trees and right next to
a beach of white sands, it’s been seducing our guests for
years with its wellbeing spaces and experiences.
Ikos Odisia
The new kid on the block having just launched in June
2023, Ikos Odisia is a gorgeous luxury all-inclusive five
star resort located in Dassia Bay that’s surrounded by
manicured gardens and with views over the sparkling
Ionian Sea. If the impressive number of swimming pools,
private long stretch of beach and tennis courts doesn’t
create enough appeal, then perhaps the swanky
interiors and five à la carte restaurants will.
“What was standout about Domes Miramare for me was just
how reasonably priced the food was compared to when you
go to the Old Town,” says Ian Farrell, a guest who visited
with his partner in June this year. “We were half board across
the restaurants and the quality of food, presentation, and
variety was great, so we never got bored of the menu, and
they always came with great sea views. The sushi restaurant,
Raw Bar, upstairs was a lovely surprise.”
“The scent at Domes Miramare was amazing. Every time
you walked in it felt so good. We actually purchased a
diffuser of that fragrance from the hotel boutique that’s
now in our hallway at home, so whenever we walk
in the door, we get that fond holiday memory.”

Riviera Maya
For cultural discoveries and beautiful coastlines
WHERE TO STAY
WHERE IT IS
Riviera Maya lies south of Cancún in a delightful stretch of coastline on
Mexico’s northeastern Yucatán Peninsula. You’ll find miles upon miles
of perfect white sands and the world’s second largest barrier reef
system. Not only is it a place for soaking up the sunshine and good
vibes, it’s also home to several cultural and family-friendly treasures.
WHAT TO DO
If you’re a culture lover then you’ll definitely want to head to Coba,
an ancient Mayan city complete with a jungle temple. Or you might
like to explore mangrove forests in Cozumel, a tiny island just off the
coast that is ideal for snorkelling.
There are also several eco parks that offer up family adventures,
such as river rafting and ziplining, in the region’s natural landscapes.
You can also play a round of golf or hit the shops at the exclusive
boutiques of 5th Avenue in Playa de Carmen. And while you’re
here, it would be rude not to spend some time at Playa Maroma,
considered one of the world’s best beaches.

In the heart of Riviera Maya, nestled within tropical
landscapes lies the family-friendly, luxurious resort of
Fairmont Mayakoba. Each room comes with spectacular
views over the surrounding jungle and lagoon.

Tenerife is a much-loved island in the Canary Islands. While an
autonomous community of Spain, it’s actually closer to the continent
of Africa than Europe. The island - like many in the archipelago -
was formed over three million years ago by volcanic activity, which
pushed three islands together. It’s also home to the world’s third
largest volcano, Mount Tiede, and the national park that holds it is a
UNESCO World Heritage site.

So, where’s best for your type
of holiday?
The Canary Islands have literally hundreds of beaches: some are made for families where
you can build sandcastles and splash around to your heart’s content, while others invite
you to kick back with a cocktail under the palm trees.
It’s also home to some of Europe's best leisure parks, offering amazing day’s out for kids
and big kids alike. (And, if you are on a child-free holiday then some of them now feature
their own adults-only zones.)
Then there’s all the mesmerising natural beauty to soak up, whether you’re seeking an
active hike through volcanic landscapes and jungle, taking a gentle drift to spot whales
and dolphins, or looking for a dreamy night under the ever-inspiring star-filled skies.

While Gran Canaria offers Sioux City Park where you can be
a cowboy for the day, and plenty of water fun at Aqualand
Maspalomas, the island has also got a distinctly grown-up side,

romantic viewpoints. Take a tranquil moment or two on the black
sands of San Agustín and the nearby Fincas Canarias aloe vera

A TRIP OF A LIFETIME IN
Mauritius
Sovereign Luxury Travel guests Gary & Paula Gibbons share
their story of celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary
at Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel in Mauritius.
We knew we wanted our 25th wedding anniversary to be special. We worked
out that this was the first time we’ve been away together for more than a weekend
break since we had our children. This would be our first holiday, just the two of us.
We know we could probably have found less expensive options, but back in our heyday
Gary had worked for a travel agency and remembered that Sovereign Luxury Travel
was always considered the most luxurious and top-end company and so would help
us ensure every detail was perfect. We weren’t disappointed.
Initially, we didn’t know where we wanted to go. We were thinking of the Caribbean
but after chatting with the Sovereign Luxury Travel team we were recommended
the Indian Ocean.
It was good to talk to someone who intimately knew the destinations and we don’t
think we would have been sent anywhere that wasn’t right. We didn’t want a large
resort with hundreds of rooms but more of a boutique-y, small scale place that felt
special - and Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel was exactly that.
Our anniversary celebration fell right in the middle
of our holiday, but as it turned out, we were so spoiled
it felt like we celebrated an anniversary week!

One day we went out on the resort’s glassbottomed
boat to go and see the coral reef.
It was amazing with all these tropical fish
swimming around - it was like a giant fish tank!
The hotel arranged a car and driver for the day for us to do some
self-organised activities, which was cheaper than if we had hired
our car ourselves.
The moment we arrived through the entrance gates, it was if we had
stepped into a film! The staff were so welcoming and sat us down
in the lovely reception with a cold flannel and a soft drink, and they
talked us through the check-in process and what facilities were
available as our baggage was being whisked away to our room.
When we were shown our room, we pulled
back the curtains and both let out a big ‘wow’.
The view took our breath away -
it was picture-postcard perfection!
The entire hotel was all low-rise buildings and never more than
three floors high, with all the rooms looking out to the cove. We had
a terrace balcony where we sat out and looked out over the ocean.
We spent a lot of time just chilling in various parts of the resort,
reading, and daydreaming. They had these little love nests -
thatched roofed wooden platforms with sun loungers where you
could have your own secluded space. Every single love nest had a
call button where someone would immediately come and take our
drinks order, which we loved.
There were a lot of activities on offer and we took a pedalo and
kayak out a few times.
As it turns out, this was a really good move as we achieved and
saw so much in one day, and it was great to have someone local
take us to places we never would have known about. We got to
see both dormant and inactive volcanoes, beautiful waterfalls,
and inside an old Hindu temple! We also saw some giant tortoises,
which were absolutely amazing, unbelievably enormous, and so
prehistoric!
Paradise Cove has four restaurants - there’s the Dining Room, the
main restaurant where you can just turn up, and then three other
speciality ones that you need to book in advance.
The food was outstanding - it really was, and we often salivate just
thinking about it!
One of our concerns about going all-inclusive was the variety and
quality of what we might get, and that we might feel limited, but
every single meal we ate was outstanding. There was a great
variety of drinks that you could enjoy throughout the day: including
red, white, and rosé wine, cocktails, and beer.
On our first night we ate a French-style four course meal in the
Dining Room. We have a friend who is a former MasterChef
champion, and so whenever we have good food, we send photos
to her! Well, we’ve never sent her so many photos! We also really
liked the Japanese restaurant XO with its sushi selection.
Breakfast was equally amazing - the resort has this dedicated
cold room with an automatic sliding door where all the cheeses,
yoghurts, and fruits are kept. It was lovely to see the food being so
well-looked after.
A highlight of our day was enjoying a long lazy lunch at the
oceanfront restaurant, Peninsula. It's a little covered restaurant
overlooking the sea, and you have a lovely warm breeze coming
through. The menu is so wide-ranging with a mix of European and
regional flavours so we could try something different every day.
There was a particularly lovely Mauritian fish curry served in little
ceramic pots with dal and rice.

A TRIP OF A LIFETIME IN MAURITIUS
The hotel staff were just incredible - genuinely friendly yet
unobtrusive. They made us feel so comfortable and judged it
perfectly, knowing when our glasses were ready for a refill, when
to have a friendly joke, and when to leave us be.
There’s also a unique restaurant called The Cove, which is just for
two people and located right on the water, which is where we
had our very special anniversary dinner.
Also on our special night was a manager’s reception taking
place. We don’t usually enjoy organised events, but there were
the most stunning Mauritian dancers performing who we could
have sat and watched forever. It almost felt like they had put on a
show just for us!
Every night there was a really good live band playing, which was
a great sociable part of the island experience. But if you also
wanted solitude then there were plenty of places to escape to.
Our two daughters surprised us with a couple’s massage as an
anniversary gift. We went down to the beach where there was
a love nest set up with two massage tables. This isn’t something
we would normally do, but the entire experience felt amazing
- the masseuses had spritzed spa fragrance, so we were lying
there for a full hour, breathing in the lovely perfume while
listening to the waves.
It was a bit of a shock when we had to leave the bubble, but
then at the same time, 10 days felt like the perfect amount of time
for this holiday of a lifetime. It didn’t just meet, but it completely
exceeded our expectations.

Because we only take a reservation deposit of typically 25%
of the holiday, you then have plenty of time to put aside money
towards the full balance of your holiday, the due date of which

Filming Locations
With such epic scenery and landscapes, it’s no surprise that Italy has been featured
on the silver screen since the early days of motion pictures. When films turned Technicolor,
Italy quickly established itself as a naturally photogenic destination. What you see on the
screen though is just a glimpse of the beauty that can be found in person. Join us as we
take you to some of Italy's prettiest destinations, as seen on screen in the last two decades!
INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (2023)
When Harrison Ford returned to our screens this year for
the fifth instalment of the legendary adventure franchise
Indiana Jones, it was Sicily that was chosen as the
filming location. And how could it not be? The southern
Italian island has so much spellbinding natural beauty
and archaeological treasures to unearth. A 600-strong
crew went on location to deliver the time-travelling
storyline. Featured in the film was Syracuse, renowned
for its impressive collection of ancient Greek ruins and
unusual caves and a Gothic citadel, as did the pretty
coastal marina of Cefalù, where scenes were filmed at
the beautiful Lungomare Beach and where entire piazzas
were transformed back into the 1960s. Also, Trapani in
the west of Sicily was put in the limelight, with Roman
gladiators roaming the steep, winding streets of historical
Castellammare del Golfo, and where a yacht got sunk off
the coast of Marsala.
Cyrano (2021), the romantic musical film starring Peter
Dinklage as the 17th century writer Cyrano de Bergerac,
was also shot entirely on location in Sicily - and apparently
the crew narrowly avoided an eruption from the island’s
famous active volcano, Mount Etna!

THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (1999)
The psychological thriller that starred an all-star cast including Matt Damon,
Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Cate Blanchett took us to the Neapolitan
Riviera, and conjured up the glamour of 1960s Italy in the process.
The film was based in a fictitious seaside town called Mongibello, which was
in fact a mash-up of several Italian locations. The cliffside resort of Positano
is one of them, with its pink and peach pastel hued houses that cling to the
narrow, winding streets. It’s an ideal location for a spot of summer romance.
The glitzy island of Ischia and its much smaller neighbour Procida also
featured in the film. Popular with the chic jet-setting crowd of the 1960s, it’s
easy to take a day trip to visit either of these islands from the Amalfi Coast and
invoke your inner Jackie Kennedy or Richard Burton.
Here’s some more trivia for you: when Mr Ripley arrives in Italy, it’s the art deco
airport terminal of Palermo in Sicily that you see on screen.

EAT PRAY LOVE (2010)
When Elizabeth Gilbert embarked on her life-changing journey, as portrayed
by Julia Roberts in the biographical film memoir, one of the countries she chose
was Italy.
She indulged in an entire margherita in Naples. If we had been her advisors,
we would have suggested she try out the city’s oldest pizzeria, before quickly
jumping on a train to unwind on the Neapolitan Riviera, as this is a location
far more conducive to relaxing, with its romantic cliffside resorts that overlook
the sparkling Mediterranean below.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008)
There’s no denying it: James Bond LOVES Italy. Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and
Daniel Craig have all had flings in Venice, riding gondolas and private boats
down the Grand Canal. Bond has had car chases in Rome, whizzing past the
Vatican and ending up in the Tiber River with Spectre (2015), recuperated in
Lake Como in Casino Royale (2006), and had another epic car chase scene
in the amazing sassi of Matera in No Time to Die (2021). Even when Bond was
apparently in Brazil in From Russia with Love (1963), he was actually in Italy.
But what we want to talk about right now is Quantum of Solace (2008),
which beautifully depicted two of our favourite locations.
In the opening credits, 007 took us on a thrilling car chase through several of
our favourite waterfront villages in Lake Garda, ending in the Riva del Garda.
As Italy’s largest lake, the sparkle of Lake Garda is enhanced by the imposing
Dolomite Mountains that overlook it. It’s an ideal location for windsurfing and
sailing, or for visiting wineries on the southern shore.

Despite their popularity and favour, the Maldives has only
been open to tourism for the past 50 years. Before the 1970s,
the Maldives were really only known by scuba divers and
underwater adventure seekers, but then a change in political
leadership meant there was a new focus on tourism as a way
to boost the local economy.
THE MALDIVES ARE A MELTING POT OF CULTURE
The Maldives has been inhabited for over 3,000 years
and holds a wonderfully diverse group of people, thanks
to its ancient history. Located in the heart of the Indian
Ocean, it was at a perfect crossroads for sea traders
from India, Africa, Europe and Arabia who would grace
the islands as a natural stop en route to Asia. In fact, the
traditional Maldivian dhoni (sailboats) are inspired by the
ancient Arabian dhow.
THE MALDIVES IS A DRY NATION
The Maldives has been a Muslim country for centuries, which
is why you’ll find the weekend falling on Fridays and Saturdays.
Due to its Islamic customs, local people are prohibited from
drinking alcohol, so you won’t easily find alcohol being sold
in supermarkets, however guests are exempt from these rules,
so you’ll always find an excellent selection of beverages at
your resort.
THE ISLANDS SHAPESHIFT

There's only approximately half a million people living in
the Maldives, which is the same population as Edinburgh!
Of all the islands, only one fifth of them are inhabited, and
some of these islands are absolutely tiny, and no bigger
than a few square metres. Around 200 islands host their
own luxury resorts and a further 200 islands host the local
population, which until recent years were not allowed to
be visited by outsiders. The remaining islands are used as
government assets and for things like airports, agriculture,
or for private picnic excursions from your luxury resort.
THESE AREN’T YOUR TYPICAL BEACHES
The moment you sink your feet into the Maldives’ fine
white sands, you’ll realise there’s something different
about its beaches. 95% of beaches in the world are made
from quartz, whereas the Maldivian beaches are composed
completely of coral, which is made from dried and
sun-bleached algae. This makes them very rare indeed.
Parrot fish contribute to the beauty of the
beaches by feeding on the coral all day,
which is then excreted back as fine coral sand.
In the past, Maldivian people would construct their homes
using coral as there was always ample supply. Today
coral is vehemently protected but you may witness the odd
traditional coral house standing in Male.
It’s thought that the Maldives, which comprises 1,200 islands,
were first formed about 60 million years ago on top of sunken
volcanoes, and it’s not unusual for the islands to shapeshift
throughout the year! Seasonal currents, particularly
during the monsoon, move the sand around so
that entire sandbanks disappear, and new ones
emerge. In fact, a tiny new island emerged in the
southern Maldives in 2022 and is expected to
become an entire island if the natural formation
process is left undisturbed.

THERE’S AN IMPRESSIVE NUMBER OF FISH SPECIES
If you like scuba diving or snorkelling, then you’re in for a treat! There are
over 2,000 different fish species that live in the surrounding coral reefs that
you can access very easily from your resort. You’ll find all shapes and sizes,
colours, and patterns, from the Moorish idol (otherwise known as Gill from
Finding Dory!) and the Chinese trumpetfish to powder blue surgeonfish,
clownfish (best known as Nemo), butterflyfish, and triggerfish.
Some dhoni crews don’t use GPS to navigate through
the waters - instead they navigate the traditional way by
observing the movement of the lagoon surface to avoid
the corals, and by using the stars at night by aligning
them with the bow of their vessels.

YOU CAN SWIM WITH THE WORLD’S BIGGEST FISH!
The largest fish in the ocean - the whale shark - can be found in the
Maldives, and if you’re lucky you may get to swim alongside one!
While their name and size - growing up to 20 feet long - may suggest
otherwise, whale sharks are gentle and pose no risk to humans. There
are three official whale shark sanctuaries in the Maldives, and the
archipelago is one of few places in the world where you can encounter
them all year round. Around 200 whale sharks are present in the waters
here at any given time.

IT’S THE LOWEST NATION IN THE WORLD
At its highest point, the Maldives is just eight feet above sea level, which is
significantly lower than any other country in the world. On average, some
of the islands are just 1.5 metres above sea level.
The archipelago is also located really close to the equator, which
guarantees a lot of sunshine, often striking at a 90-degree angle.

and apply frequently throughout the day.

UNDERWATER DINING AND MEETINGS ARE TYPICAL
The under-the-sea lifestyle of the Maldives extends beyond nonmotorised

flawless for a multi-generational family holiday.
The concept here is premium all-inclusive so you can eat and
drink at the pool bars, food trucks, and restaurants around
the resort. You’ll find a great mix, from an excellent buffet
restaurant with a children’s section that helps them feel
independent, as well as five other dining options that you need
to reserve in advance, covering Asian, Greek, French, Italian
cuisine, and a grill.
The beach grill for dinner was our highlight as it’s in a beautiful
setting right on the beach with some delicious choices.

Very Important Kids
The dull holiday clubs of our youths are long gone. No more tired-looking playrooms,
uninspired play leaders, or umpteen renditions of outdated nursery rhymes. There are now
established and chic places for the cool kids, where an endless supply of first-class fun is
served up with mocktails and smiles. You might even find yourself a tad envious!
“Kids’ clubs have come beyond cool in recent years,” says Karen
Noble, Sovereign Luxury Travel’s Regional Destination Manager.
“I’m always amazed at all the incredible entertainment options
for children of all ages these days. While parents are being
treated like VIPs in our handpicked collection of luxury resorts,
the youngsters are getting similar V.I.K. - Very Important Kids -
treatment. It’s fantastic!”
Children-specific swimming pools and private babysitting
services come almost as standard these days, while a few of
these kids’ clubs are a cut above the rest, particularly among our
