Dig into Paphos
It’s time to step out from your resort
to unearth ancient worlds and fun-filled
attractions for all the family.
Situated on the southwest coast of Cyprus, the city of
Paphos is a delightful world of old and new. It’s been
inhabited since neolithic times and is teeming with
archaeological sites that add some treasure to your
sun-sought holiday. It’s also got plenty of activities for
children and teenagers that can break up your resort
days. Here’s our top picks.
APHRODITE WATER PARK
Who doesn’t love a water park? Located just outside
of Paphos it’s an ideal family day out. With a long lazy
river, high-speed water slides, wave pools, and a water
play zone, you’ll be loathed to leave.
PAPHOS OLD TOWN
This cobbled historic centre is a charming place to stroll
around, especially after it received a generous facelift in
2017 when the city was named the European Capital of
Culture! Discover boutique shops filled with handmade
crafts and an appetising farmer’s market.
CORAL BAY BEACH
Is this Europe’s best beach? Worthy of an Instagram post
or two with its soft sands, crystal-clears waters, epic
views, and esteemed Blue Flag status, some say it is - but
we’ll let you and your family be the judge of that.
PAPHOS CASTLE
From Hotel Almyra or Annabelle Hotel, stroll down the
promenade all the way to the city’s lovely harbour, which
is lined by waterfront bars. Continue and you’ll see a
beautiful castle, which was first built as a fort by the
Byzantines, before being enhanced by the Venetians.
It’s an amazing place to climb up and witness sweeping
views, and often hosts festivals and art exhibitions.
KATO PAPHOS ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
One of our top go-to spots and conveniently located right by
Paphos Harbour, this UNESCO World Heritage site takes you
deep into the ancient 4th century BC city of Nea Pafo. With
little shade, be sure to bring a sun hat, water, and lotion.
• THE MOSAICS
Accidentally discovered by a farmer who was out ploughing
his fields, the main show at Kato Paphos is displayed in
several Roman villa remains, with their intricate mosaic
flooring. Depicting epic Greek myths and ancient battles,
they’re not only beautiful and interesting to learn about, but
they’ve also been perfectly preserved. If you skip everything
else in the park, do see this!
• TOMB OF THE KINGS
Located in the park but with a separate entrance, you’ll
find this impressive ancient necropolis located right by
the ocean, near a rusting cargo ship. A subterranean
labyrinthine world of frescoed walls and even a Doric
column was cut into the rock to create vast, grand caverns,
and epic sandstone tombs - fit for a king!
• ACROPOLIS AND ODEON
Also located in the park is a second century sandstone
theatre that continues to hold summer theatre and music
events under the stars. Right next door is a contemporary
lighthouse and what’s believed to be the ancient acropolis
(fort), which you can visit too.
ADONIS BATHS
Seeking a wild spa day? Head to Adonis Baths, which
holds a two-level waterfall with azure-coloured swimming
areas and mud therapy. Dripping in folklore, the baths are
believed to be where the Greek god Adonis and his goddess
Aphrodite spent a lot of time. Arrive early to avoid the
crowds.
APHRODITE’S ROCK
Perfectly befitting the birth of a goddess, this massive
geological sea stack was once believed to be where
Aphrodite was born. Take a stroll along the pebble beach
just before sunset for the most beautiful sight of the rock
under orange and pink hues.
CHRYSORROGIATISSA MONASTERY
In the tranquil hills surrounding Paphos in a small village called
Panayia, this 12th century monastery is tucked away in the
natural grandeur of forest. After observing the 300-year-old
frescoes, taste the vintage wine that the monks produce.
SOVEREIGN LUXURY TRAVEL RECOMMENDS:
After spending a few days in Paphos, why don’t you
head to the Troodos Mountains, where you can stay
in the historic Casale Panayiotis in a revived village?
Get a taste for time-honoured crafts and activities
The Canary Islands:
ADVENTURES IN ART
There must be something in the air! The Canary Islands always unleash
a creative spirit. From Canarian basketry that use the pírgano and palmettos
of date palm trees to the handmade ceramics, you’ll find independent shops
teeming with one-of-a-kind artisanal products. And these sunny islands have
produced and inspired some legendary contemporary artists too.
Come with us as we take you on some adventures in art!
GRAN CANARIA
NÉSTOR MARTÍN-FERNÁNDEZ DE LA TORRE
If you like art deco, then you’re in for a treat! Arguably one of
the most important symbolist and modernist painters in Europe,
Néstor was born in the island capital of Las Palmas towards the
end of the 19th century where the endemic flora and fauna was
his muse. After touring Europe’s great cities, he returned to his
roots in the 1930s to set up his studio.
Head to Museo Néstor in the centre of Las Palmas to see his
imaginative paintings, including his great work Poema de los
Elementos, a series of eight oil-on-canvas paintings that depict
water. More elemental paintings were planned but sadly the
artist left the world early and unexpectedly due to complications
from pneumonia.
LA REGENTA ART CENTRE
In downtown Las Palmas within a former tobacco factory, this
art gallery celebrates local Canarian artists with a range of
mediums. Throughout the year it plays host to contemporary
exhibitions and artistic events.
ATLANTIC CENTRE OF MODERN ART (CAAM)
Given its proximity and historic ties to Africa, America, and Europe,
it makes sense that the Old Town of Las Palmas accommodates a
museum that connects contemporary art from all three continents.
With free admission, it’s a fascinating stop to take in a temporary
exhibition or two - plus it has an excellent shop if you’re seeking
artsy souvenirs!
LANZAROTE
TENERIFE
CÉSAR MANRIQUE
We’ve celebrated César Manrique many times in Sojourn - and
for good reason! This 20th century contemporary artist left an
indelible mark on his native Lanzarote. His inspired and vibrant
paintings, sculptures, and architecture are dotted around the
island and showcase his deep appreciation of Lanzarote’s
ecology and volcanic landscapes.
From his volcanic bubble house and private collection at César
Manrique Foundation, to Jameos del Agua, Lago Martiánez and
his last great work, Jardín de Cactus, you’re in for a treat.
You can also enjoy Manrique’s art from two of our handpicked
hotels. The family-friendly and village-style Princesa Yaiza Suite
Hotel Resort in Playa Blanca boasts one of his large abstract
paintings in the lobby, while the man himself consulted on the
interior decoration of Hotel Los Fariones in Puerto del Carmen!
MACEW
An unlikely gem in Puerto de la Cruz, Eduardo Westerdahl Museum
of Contemporary Art (MACEW) is a small gallery of just a few
rooms in a beautiful historic house. It’s believed to be the first
contemporary art museum in Spain. Named after the prominent
20th century art critic who founded it, you’ll find paintings and
sculptures from the 1950s and 1960s, including ones by Canarian
artists Juan Ismael and Oscar Domínguez.
JASON DECAIRES TAYLOR
Interviewed in Sojourn before for his works around the world, the
British sculptor and scuba diver Jason deCaires Taylor created an
epic underwater sculpture park near Playa Blanca.
Museo Atlántico is composed of 10 sculptures that commemorate
the forgotten refugees who tried to cross the ocean. The sculptures
have taken on a life of their own after living coral species made
them their habitat. If you have a PADI certification then it's an
amazing and thought-provoking place to dive to.
ART BOTÁNICO
If you have a passion for art then we highly recommend you stay
at Hotel Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden, also in Puerto
de la Cruz. The hotel boasts a substantial private collection
from contemporary Spanish and Canarian artists that has been
scattered throughout the hotel, including notable pieces from
César Manrique, Oscar Domínguez, Pepe Dámaso, and Néstor
de la Torre.
The Two Sides of
Gran Canaria
WITH GEORGIA PRICKETT
If you’re yet to visit Gran Canaria then don’t dismiss it for your
next luxury holiday: the island has two distinct personalities that
you can enjoy, as Sovereign Luxury Travel’s Georgia Prickett shares.
Often overlooked by its more popular siblings of Tenerife and
Lanzarote, I think you’ll be surprised by Gran Canaria. It’s
awash with its own distinct natural beauty, which includes
incredible beaches.
Step into this beautiful island to be greeted with lines upon lines
of palm trees. These breezy chilled trees are everywhere - if a
palm paradise doesn’t get you into a holiday spirit, I don’t know
what will!
Gran Canaria is brilliant if you’re wanting some
winter sunshine without the long-haul flight or if you
fancy a dose of sun but are unable to plan too far
in advance. What’s more, there’s no time difference,
so you don’t have to worry about jet lag!
The island receives most of its visitors in November and
December, so if you’re looking to save money then I recommend
you travel in the spring and autumn when hotel rates are lower.
Whenever couples or groups of friends travel together, I notice
there’s often a clear difference in what a holiday should look like.
Some want to completely switch off, while others like to explore.
That’s why I think Gran Canaria is so great - if you
combine the north and south you can keep everyone
happy with a really well-rounded experience.
Santa Catalina, A Royal Hideaway Hotel
Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia
CHOOSE LAS PALMAS FOR CULTURE
If you like Portugal, then you’ll love Las Palmas!
I get antsy if I’m lazing around on beaches too long as I absolutely
love history, and so I love the north of the island as there are many
little tours and day trips that capture the island’s heritage.
I was blown away by the opulence at Santa Catalina, A Royal
Hideaway Hotel. The property is about 100 years old and so it’s
got an old-time luxury flavour with details like marble flooring
throughout its lobby, while still feeling brilliantly modern.
I highly recommend you stay in a junior suite or
higher category suites, as this entitles you to the
exclusive access rooftop bar and pool lounge area.
A wonderful sun trap, it’s quieter than the main
pool and adds that extra touch of luxury.
The hotel staff delivers a great service that’s personal without
being overbearing. For example, when you check-in, you’re invited
to sit down, and when you’re having breakfast or dinner, you’ll find
your water glass is always topped up without disruption.
EXPLORE LAS PALMAS & DAY TRIP AWAY!
Santa Catalina, A Royal Hideaway Hotel is set within a vast public
park, so you can just step out and stroll. Wander by foot or take a
taxi into the Old Town where you can explore vibrant local produce
markets and interesting museums.
I found Casa de Colón particularly fascinating! It’s a colonial-style
mansion where Christopher Columbus stopped off and stayed
during his maiden voyage to the Americas, and you can learn all
about him and the pre-Hispanic culture of the Canaries before the
arrival of the Europeans.
I also took a day trip to the charming small town of Arucas, which is
like Las Palmas but a lot smaller, with a cathedral, art gallery, and
parks and gardens to visit.
Be sure to visit the banana plantations, as you’ll learn more than
you ever thought possible about bananas - including a naturally
black variety! Gran Canaria is a big exporter of the fruit, and you
can learn how they grow, and taste delicious banana wine and
banana jam.
The visit to the archaeological site of Cenobio de Valerón is
worth it too - you walk up 180 small steps to find impressive
terraces of 300 silos that would have once acted as a giant
granary. It was basically a communal store cupboard for the
prehistoric Canarians!
STAY IN MASPALOMAS FOR PURE RELAXATION
For amazing beach and pool days, then it’s time to take your
holiday to the south of the island. You can properly unwind in
Maspalomas and not feel like you’re missing out on anything.
Despite just a 45-minute drive, there’s a distinct temperature
increase of about 5°C. When I visited in November I travelled from
Las Palmas in jeans and felt like a jacket potato by the time I arrived
in Maspalomas and was eager to don more beach-friendly attire!
Of course, on the coast you’ve always got the benefit of the breeze,
plus you can grab a cocktail in the shade or cool down with a
siesta in your air-conditioned room. There’s a great selection of chic
sea-facing resorts in Maspalomas, which all have direct access to
the promenade and town centre.
The south of Gran Canaria is busier, but that has its benefits as you
find great food spots and shopping malls just moments from your
accommodation. With a fabulous tax break, you can purchase
designer and luxury goods around 10% less than anywhere else.
GIVE YOURSELF TIME
Stay at the adult-orientated Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia,
which has a home-from-home nature to it with warm and attentive
service. It feels really leisurely here - your buffet meals never feel
rushed, plus you’ve got a relaxing spa to spend time in and evening
piano entertainment in the drawing room.
Enjoy a lazy morning and a few hours by the
swimming pool. Then at dusk when it’s cooler,
you can perhaps amble down to the beach
or along to the lighthouse, pausing at lively
beachside restaurants and bars.
If, like me, you enjoy a day trip then I highly recommend you
visit Puerto Mogan, which is a lovely, whitewashed village with
colourful houses and a harbour filled with fish restaurants. There’s
also a beach, so while you go off exploring your partner or friends
can relax on the sand - and look after your bags!
I recommend you spend three nights exploring the north, followed
by four leisurely nights in the south.
A 7 night holiday in both the north and south
of Gran Canaria starts from £1,699 per person.
CRETE
The Perfect Pairing
Wild mountains. Dreamy beaches. Quaint, traditional villages.
Rich culinary delights. Historic treasures. This is Crete.
Crete offers so much that to do it justice, we suggest you split
your holiday between the east and west. With frequent flights
in and out of its two international airports - Heraklion in the
east and Chania in the west, our Personal Travel Planners will
arrange a hassle-free, round trip for you.
The west of Crete is an amazing rugged base to explore from.
Hike the Samaria Gorge, venture to the pink sands of Elafonisi
Beach or the hypnotic cerulean waters of Balos Lagoon, or
visit vineyards and oil mills in sleepy villages. Then there’s
Chania, a gorgeous little harbour town that has charm by
the bucketload within its labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets
and timeless Venetian, Byzantine, and Ottoman architecture.
Enter the 14th century Venetian port, which is marked by an
impressive lighthouse and a medieval fortress, and home to
traditional restaurants by the waterfront.
The east of Crete offers you the space to completely switch
off as you'll find many resorts set next to long stretches of
beach and scenic coves. If you fancy a day trip, then you’re
in for a treat: this region is steeped in fascinating mythology.
Visit legendary attractions such as the renowned and ancient
Cave of Zeus with its impressive stalactites or to fascinating
Minoean ruins, such as the Palace of Knossos near the island’s
capital, Heraklion. Or, from Aghios Nikolaos or Elounda, take
a boat to the fortified island of Spinalonga to unearth its
unusual history.
“Which side you start is entirely up to you”, says Ben Stratton,
Head of Product. “You may decide on the convenience of
flights, or alternatively you may decide due to the style of
holiday you wish to have.”
“While both sides of Greece’s largest
island offer pretty areas to be explored,
wonderful beaches and delightful food,
Chania tends to be more boutique, with
some exciting new bars and restaurants
for you to explore in and around the old
Venetian port.”
Ben Stratton, Head of Product
“Plaka, Elounda, and Aghios Nikolaos in the east tend to
accommodate larger and very luxurious resorts, which
are ideal for the relaxation part of your holiday,” adds
Ben. “You’ll find a choice of restaurants to dine around
in, plenty of space, and lots of facilities, including
watersports and spas.”
MENORCA & MAJORCA
Staying on both Menorca and Majorca makes for a great
holiday as each island is filled with its own beautiful beaches,
crystalline blue waters, pretty towns, delicious cuisine, and
stunning landscape and views! Menorca is a much smaller and
less populated island than Majorca and so can feel a little more
peaceful and traditional.
“I love Menorca more than I initially thought I would. It’s
got more of a boho feel to it than Majorca and the locals
are very proud of their laid-back way of life. There are
two main towns to discover, Port Mahon and Ciutadella,
which have lots of friendly ancient rivalry between them!”
Karen Noble, Regional Destination Manager
We recommend you hop
around Majorca as the
island is diverse! We have a
beautiful property, Es Moli,
located up in the hills close
to the picturesque town of
Deia. You could combine
this with a stay at one of our
beachfront hotels.
Walk or cycle some of the Cami de Cavalls,
Top Tip!
While you can take a 20-minute flight on a propeller
you take the ferry, as it’s quick and comfortable.
“Don’t miss Alcudia. Within its medieval walls you’ll
find a charming town full of history and culture, plus
many traditional local craft shops and restaurants.”
Cassie Harris, Personal Travel Planner
“One of the best experiences in Majorca is the historic train that travels from
Palma through the countryside to Soller. You can hop off and explore the
town, before jumping back on for the tram to take you down to Port Soller.
This is a lovely beach promenade area with a great range of restaurants
and bars. We stopped for lunch at Restaurant Sa Barca, which was
amazing - the truffle pasta was delicious! Plus, the sunset views from the
cocktail bar at Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa are simply stunning!”
TUCK INTO
Portuguese
Flavours
How well do you know your piri piri from your paprika?
Get prepared for your next luxury holiday in Portugal
with our culinary lowdown.
As one of Europe’s first modern fusion cuisines, Portuguese flavours
always excites us.
The dishes we know today were shaped by the country’s homegrown
explorers who sailed far and wide and returned with flavours and
spices from South America, Africa, and Asia!
Steeped in their peasant roots, Portuguese savoury dishes are hearty
and simple to prepare. They use just a few select ingredients -
namely chicken, rice, salted cod, olives, almonds, and pork - that are
then elevated by spice and from being cooked on hot coals or a grill.
The cooking methods, however, are native to Portugal, such as
braising meat before frying it, or using a mortar and pestle to create
the unique aromatic pastes and spice rubs.
Within the home, you’ll see families still using traditional clay pots
for stews, cast iron skillets for frying, and wood fired pits for grilling.
Clams, meanwhile, are cooked in tin-lined copper pans that
resemble a clam shell known as a cataplana. If you get the chance,
try amêijoas na cataplana!
In the Algarve, the flavourful wine-infused
fish and vegetable stew known as caldeirada is a
popular household dish.
You’ll find plenty of old-school preservation techniques too, from
smoking and salting to brining in olive oil, lard, wine, or vinegar.
Try the national dish of bacalhau - or salted cod. Created before
modern refrigeration, the fish was salted so that it could withstand
long periods of travel. Today it continues to be a cherished dish and
there’s apparently 365 ways of preparing it, so that it never gets old.
A far cry from the British wartime food that we all know, canning
is an esteemed preservation method in Portugal. In fact, it's so
popular that you may stumble across petiscos (tapas) restaurants
specialising in tinned produce!
DID YOU KNOW?
If you’re feeling peckish in the afternoon, then you’re
in luck! Portugal has what’s called a lanche da tarde,
a second lunch, from 4pm to 5.30pm each day!
A TOUCH OF SPICE
Piri Piri
This small hot pepper is dubbed the African devil. Portugal’s most
famous spice dates back to the 15th century when it was brought over
from Mozambique or Angola. Today, once it has been coated in chicken
and grilled, it becomes Portugal's most exported dish - especially when
served with French fries and a salad! But piri piri chicken is at its most
delicious in the Algarve and, if you want to blend in with the locals, then
you should always eat it with your hands.
Cinnamon
This prized spice is added to both soups and stews, as well as
sobremesas (desserts). Cinnamon takes a central role in the delicious
creaminess of the renowned pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tart)
and in the creamy rice pudding, arroz doce.
Paprika
Made from dried, ground red peppers that’s occasionally smoked for a
distinctly sweet and earthy flavour, paprika is used liberally! It’s the base
flavour in carne de porco à Alentejana - a classic surf and turf dish of
marinated pork and sweet clams from the Alentejo region.
Bay leaves
Grown throughout the country and an ancient symbol for victory, almost
every Portuguese stew features this warm and aromatic herb. Unlike
most herbs, dried bay leaves are more potent than if they’re picked fresh.
Coarse sea salt and garlic
This powerful flavour combination can be found in several Portuguese
fish dishes, from trout to the summer favourite of fresh grilled sardines.
DINE AROUND AT DOMES LAKE ALGARVE
Kick back and discover even more Mediterranean flavours at Domes Lake
Algarve! Stay in the Haute Living Selection on a half board basis and you
can benefit from the complimentary dine around experience, where you can
eat from all three of the resort’s signature restaurants. These include Gustatio
with its Portuguese comfort food with a Mediterranean twist, Topos with its
authentic Greek dishes celebrating seafood, and the picturesque Makris On
The Lake, which delivers a degustation menu of fresh, local, and organic
ingredients and regional wine pairings, all from a floating deck.
FARM-TO-FORK AT VILA VITA PARC
If you’re seeking foodie activities, then you’re spoilt for choice at Vila Vita Parc!
Cook a typical Algarvian cataplana with the resort’s chefs or go shopping
with them at the local fish market before learning to prepare regional fish
delicacies. Meanwhile, younger guests can enjoy making pizza with their very
own Le Petit Chef class. Vila Vita Parc also boasts a farm-to-fork concept
thanks to its own Herdade dos Grous farm and vineyard in the heart of
Alentejo. You can visit and discover the regional food traditions such as olive
oil production and organic farming, before tucking into rustic stews at its
traditional restaurant.
