WELCOME
Andiamo!
Passion
Hello and welcome to the Citalia magazine, Andiamo! This is the first edition for 2024, packed with
inspiration for a summer of family fun, not-to-be-missed experiences throughout the year, and more.
How do you live like a Citalian? Well, it begins with a secret
ingredient that every Italian appears to have in abundance: passion!
This ethereal quality is seemingly scattered throughout every
corner of the country.
That’s why we kick off the latest issue of Andiamo! magazine
highlighting all the passionate festivals and events you can expect
in 2024 with Your Year in Italy. From flowers, art, pistachios,
truffles, jazz, tomatoes, dance, wine, and arguably the most
passionate of them all: opera, we recommend you book these
experiences in advance so you don’t miss out on the best
accommodation or seats!
You can also hear the roar of Italian passion from the crowds
watching Serie A games played in city stadiums. We offer a closer
look on how to include a match during your next Citalia holiday
with our feature, Calcio! Football in Italy.
Then, of course, passion is found in droves within the country’s
cucine and trattorie. If you want a more elevated haute cuisine
experience, then we suggest you read Your Guide to Michelin-
Starred Italy - we challenge you not to feel hungry afterwards!
I would argue that la passione is fuelled by Italy’s inspiring natural
beauty. Sit and dream with our article, Rooms with a Lake View, or
discover A Waterworld of Villas & Gardens by Italy’s legendary lakes
with our new Small Group Escorted Tour.
Passion undoubtedly comes from the heart. We recommend you
retreat and rekindle your flames with your sweetheart in Romantic
Ravello. Or, if you’ve got a big celebration coming up, discover one
of our Sublime Experiences for Special Occasions.
Our expert Personal Travel Planners will create your next Italian
holiday that celebrates your personal passions. As always, you
benefit from round-the-clock support, handpicked accommodation,
and our on-the-ground trusted partners. What’s more, it's all
backed by our Travel with Confidence guarantee.
Are you ready to find your passion in Italy this year?
Let’s go!
Italians are equally passionate about family life, which is why I’d
argue that there’s no better place to spend time with your kith and
kin - and you’ll find a few recommendations for a multigenerational
holiday in Family Summer Escapes.
We show you a unique insight into Italy’s major cities when we
delve into various historical passions: the unusual so-called talking
statues of Rome, gondola-making in Venice, and the blooming
gardens of Florence in our Historic Treasures feature.
Italy
A Love Affair
with Citalia’s Personal Travel Planners
It’s the season of love, so we asked our expert Personal Travel Planners
about the Italy they’re most passionate about!
“I am always so passionate when talking about Italy to Citalia guests
- for four good reasons! First, there’s the art and cultural heritage
that's spread from amazingly-preserved historic cities to the most
remote and unexpected places. Then there’s the diverse natural
beauty. From the very south with the islands of Sicily and Sardinia
to the Alps in the north, you'll find beautiful beaches, as well as
dramatic high mountains, beautiful scenic lakes, and amazing nature
reserves. My third reason is the food, glorious food. Recipes have
been passed and enriched from generations to generation with such
fanaticism and love! My final reason? The people. Italians ‘make’
the country with their flamboyance, love and passion for life, music,
food, and family - and are so interesting and charming!”
Artan Prifti
Personal Travel Planner
“Italy is my passion - it’s really hard to narrow down my
favourite spot but one that springs to mind is the idyllic
coastal town that is Sorrento. Perched on a cliff edge,
you have the most stunning and dramatic views out from
the coast, and you can see Mount Vesuvius, Naples, and
even the island of Capri on a clear day (which is most days)!
I particularly love Piazza Tasso, filled with its family-run
cafés and bars where you can watch the world go by -
but a five-minute walk from here is a hidden gem called
Café Latino, with some of the finest pasta Italy has to offer,
plus it’s surrounded by beautiful gardens and lemon groves,
so you get a really authentic experience!”
Lucia Burletson
Personal Travel Planner
“Venice is my personal passion. I am not sure what it is
about the city, but it keeps drawing me back! Even with
my frequent visits, I always find a new little lane to explore
and there I am, lost again! I have a favourite little bar right
next to Rialto Bridge. Although it's tiny and popular, I
always wait for a free table so I can watch the busy canal
and scenes of life happening before me. There is so much
to see in Venice: from the art galleries to the beach over in
the Lido area, but the best thing is just to wander, stop for
drinks and snacks, and enjoy this crazy city!”
Linda Kulka
Personal Travel Planner
“I am very lucky to call Sardinia casa (home)! I lived there half of
my life, and the island holds many dear memories. While famous
for its beaches, I suggest you spend a few days in Cagliari, less
than a 20-minute drive from the airport, where you can enjoy
bustling markets, designer boutiques, and a vibrant nightlife that
caters to an elite crowd. I especially love Poetto Beach, one of
Sardinia’s longest beaches in Sardinia, which boasts beachfront
clubs and restaurants with live entertainment. Stay in Cagliari
for a few days, then drive to Hotel Stella Maris in Villasimius,
and Su Gologone in the north.”
Your Year in Italy
Every year is marked by moments, made up of planned and
unplanned life events. It's these unique moments that you fondly
look back on, years down the line, and use as a marker in time.
At Citalia, favourite memories are usually found in Italy’s incredible
cultural festivals, which are always filled with passion, regardless
of size.
Memories may pop up in conversation: Remember the incredible
costumes we saw during the Venice Carnevale? Or, it might be a
moment where, as you tuck into a steaming dish of truffle pasta,
you find yourself transported back to an exchange with a truffle
hunter in Alba!
Why not plan your next Citalia holiday to take in one - or even a
few - of these epic regional festivals? Your Personal Travel Planner
will advise you on the logistics to make it happen.
Given the popularity of these events we highly recommend you
book well in advance to avoid disappointment. You can then
anticipate these events for months in advance, before reliving
goosebump moments long into your future: I was there. I did that!
Calcio!
Football in Italy
Why not make Italian football a fixture in your next Citalia holiday?
There’s no denying it: football is synonymous with Italian culture. The
passion for the game is a second religion.
Is it any surprise, given Italy’s success? The national team has led Italy
to victory four times in the FIFA World Cup, twice in the European
Championships, and played in several more final games.
“Italian football is deeply ingrained in the national culture and has a
long and illustrious history,” explains Stefano Nirta, Citalia’s Regional
Destination Manager. “When fans' voices are raised in song, there's a
unity that is uplifting and hard to find elsewhere.”
An ancient form of football has been played since the Roman Empire.
Members of the famous Florentine Medici family and Popes of the
Vatican played the game during medieval times.
Not only does Italy have a cracking national team, its domestic league,
Serie A, is arguably one of the premier leagues in the world. Serie A
holds the top 20 teams within Italy and changes each year depending
on team wins. The top ones, such as Inter, Juventus, Milan, and Napoli,
strive to win the Scudetto, or little shield, a prestigious decoration that’s
sewn onto the jersey of the winning sports club.
“Football unites the country, but it’s also the source of fierce and
bitter rivalry between teams, particularly those from the same city,”
adds Stefano.
As you watch more closely, you’ll come to enjoy this theatrical style
and all the nuances of each game! Why not embrace the proud calcio
culture during your Citalia holiday?
Football season is almost year-round, but Serie A and the other
domestic games take place from August through to May, with a break
from June to August.
If there’s a particular game that you wish to watch live, then we
recommend you check the schedule and book your holiday and tickets
well in advance. Tickets to Serie A games can range between €40 and
€310, with an average price of around €105 per person.
Citalia can help you arrange your tickets, as well as
stadium tours where you can enjoy a more intimate
experience of a club.
Italian fans (tifosi) berate as much as
support their own team from the stands.
You can combine several club games in one ultimate
holiday, by taking high-speed trains between our
favourite football-loving cities.
Turin
Turin is where it all began for Italian football! In the 19th century a
Torinese man went to Britain to work in the textile industry and brought
the modern game back. He founded Italy’s first football and cricket club
in this city.
Rome
Alongside witnessing ancient history, you can watch one of the
largest football clubs in action, A.S. Roma.
The most renowned player to come from A.S. Roma
is Francesco Totti, a midfielder and epic goalscorer
who showed undying loyalty for 25 years and was
regularly selected for the national team.
We highly recommend you watch the emotionally charged fixture
of A.S. Roma vs. Napoli in the Derby del Sole, in which this rich city
pits itself against its poorer cousin.
You can also watch intense playoffs between rival teams Lazio
Roma vs. AS Roma in the Derby della Capitale where you’re always
guaranteed an electric atmosphere. Lazio Roma is the capital’s
older team with a passionate cult following. Rome goes wild with
festivities - it’s worth being around for the celebrations alone.
Not only is Turin picturesque and easy to get around, but it’s also
the home turf of the legendary Juventus, affectionately known as la
Vecchia Signora (the Old Lady), and all home games are played at the
Allianz Stadium. Juventus was always the dominant Serie A team,
however that’s changed in recent years.
Games are played at the huge Stadio Olimpico, modern Rome’s
answer to the Colosseum! The stadium holds the annual Coppa
Italia final, Italy’s most important cup tournament, as well as
illustrious music events throughout the year.
Turin is also home to the lesser-known Torino FC. It fights Juventus
every year in the Derby Della Mole, the world’s oldest city derby.
It’s named after one of the city’s architectural landmarks, the Mole
Antonelliana, which was conceived as a synagogue. Its top terrace is
85 metres high and nowadays is the perfect spot for panoramic views
over the city and the nearby snowy Alps.
Did you know?
Italy’s national football team is known as gli Azzurri
(the Blues) because of the Savoy blue jersey that the
team wears. This is the traditional colour of the House
of Savoy who once reigned over the Kingdom of Italy,
and the uniform also includes four stars that represent
the nation’s four World Cup victories.
FOOTBALL IN ITALY
Giuseppe Meazza
Stadio Diego Armando Maradona
Milan
In a city associated more with fashion
than sports, you’ll find two spirited
football clubs. The first is Football Club
Internazionale Milano - affectionately
known as Inter Milan, or simply Inter.
It’s the only Serie A club to never have
been relegated.
The second football team is the
historic AC Milan, which was founded
in 1899. Its longterm success is
usually accredited to players such as
Defender Franco Baresi, who played
from 1977 until 1997, and the legend
that is Defender Paolo Maldini, who
played from 1984 to 2009 and has an
impressive tally of 126 international
caps.
In recent seasons, the club has not had
as much luck on the field, however
pundits believe that this is changing.
Milan boasts Italy’s largest stadium,
San Siro (also known as Giuseppe
Meazza), with a capacity for over
80,000 people! The game between
the two Milanese clubs, the Derby
Della Madonnina, is named after the
golden statue of Madonna that’s found
adorning Milan’s renowned cathedral.
Naples
In the shadow of Mount Vesuvius lies the
animated fanbase of SSC Napoli.
“When Napoli won the Scudetto
(Serie A title) last year after
33 years, the city erupted in
celebrations - football is like
worship and devotion in Naples,”
explains Stefano.
Witness such scenes yourself at Stadio
Diego Armando Maradona, which has
been hosting matches since 1959 and is
named after the Argentinian striker who
played for Napoli in the 1980s.
Despite his small stature, Maradona
was an impenetrable player with epic
dribbling skills and ball control, which is
why he set two world records for transfer
fees and is known as The Golden Boy.
The Language of Italian Football
Florence
Charming Florence is an unlikely friend
of the great game, but its homegrown
team, ACF Fiorentina or the Violas,
has had historic success in national
championships.
Stadio Artemio Franchi sits on the city
outskirts and is considered lucky as the
national football team has never lost a
match here.
You may also like to visit Museo del
Calcio, the national football museum
of Italy, which has a huge collection of
both national and international football
memorabilia, and a Hall of Fame for
Italian Football.
Unlike other European countries, Italy has its own language for the game! Rather
than using the Latinised form of the word football, it opts for calcio, meaning ‘kick’.
Players don’t hold positions but a ruolo (role). A goal is l’autore del gol (authored)
rather than scored, and the ball is conquistato (conquered) rather than won from
the opposition. Similarly, some teams adopt a defensive playing style known as
catenaccio (door-bolt) that is an impressively organised and tactical backline.
Exceptional cuisine that’s always worth the journey!
some of the most delicious in the world!
Unsurprisingly, Italy was voted Most
Desirable Country for Gastronomy in the
Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2023.
If you wish to elevate your Italian
gastronomic experience, then there’s one
fail-safe way to do so: the very reputable
Michelin star!
Incredibly, 395 restaurants featured in the
current edition of the Italy Michelin Guide.
What’s the secret ingredient to
Italy’s haute cuisine success?
Passion!
As a country, it has the third highest number of
Michelin-starred restaurants (having just been
pipped to the post by France and Japan). Three
restaurants in Italy also boast the highest and
most prestigious three-star accolade!
You’ll also find 21 restaurants featured in
the Michelin Green Star list, which showcases
restaurants with the highest ethical and
environmental standards. Chefs usually
work directly with growers, farmers, and
fishermen, and forage or grow plants, and
rear their own animals.
Discover a few of our favourite Michelin
experiences. To avoid disappointment, you need
to reserve your table well in advance, and your
Personal Travel Planner will be happy to help
you arrange this while planning your holiday.
renowned fine-dining restaurants within walking distance.
as pears cooked in Aglianico wine served with raw shrimps
and cow’s ricotta cheese, plus it always showcases the region’s
fresh fish.
You can also enjoy a five senses dining experience in an
18th century palazzo at Sensi, tuck into Italian contemporary
flavours fused with the exotic at Glicine, or sample fantasyinspired
dishes at the vintage-style Alici.
Michelin-starred Mammà, which offers traditional Campanian
dishes by day and more elaborate and creative cuisine by
panoramic location with its almost poetic plates, such as pasta
mista, which boasts 14 different handmade pasta shapes
that’s served with blue lobster!
Lake Garda
While Senso Alfio Ghezzi Lake Garda may not have a star,
it has received Michelin-distinction - and rightly so as it’s a
foodie’s lakeside dream! Suspended above the water within its
enviable designer interiors, you can tuck into a tasting menu
that focuses on two things: native sustainable ingredients and
simplicity. Stay at Park Hotel Imperial.
natural bounty of its own biodynamic
kitchen garden to create two exceptional
contemporary Italian tasting menus.
course Italian tasting menu that’s modern,
creative, and seasonally-inspired.
Puglia
While staying at Hotel La Sorgente in
Savelletri di Fasano with its impeccable sea
views, we recommend you visit Due Camini,
a deeply romantic restaurant. Indulge on
dishes that carry the history of Puglia and the
change of the seasons, albeit with a novel
and masterful twist.
Viareggio
It’s not just the sea air you’ll be breathing in
when you stay at Hotel Plaza e de Russie on
the Tuscan coast. At its one Michelin-starred
restaurant, Lunasia, you’ll find three epic
tasting menus, showcasing the local fish,
ADVERTORIAL
A Soul-Soothing Stay
With Grand Hotel Victoria
Retreat away into an exquisite world. If you’ve been seeking
space - both mentally and physically - then the Grand Hotel
Victoria welcomes you with open arms.
With its floor-to-ceiling windows and many comfortable outdoor
nooks to slow down in, you can gaze across the sparkling blue waters
of Lake Como and be rewarded with a feeling of lightness.
Grand Hotel Victoria has a different air to it when compared with
other properties in Lake Como. Despite serving many British nobles
in the 19th century, it has managed to seamlessly marry the original
neoclassical property with considerate glass and steel extensions and
a contemporary minimalist decor.
You won’t find any patterned carpets or deep-framed
oil paintings here: the grandeur you see comes in the
glittering of a chandelier and in sumptuous velvet sofas.
Nor, despite its impressive five-storeys, will you find any
pretentiousness - both the hospitality and the decor are focused
on understated elegance, where you can enjoy top-notch service
without unnecessary fanfare.
Tucked in the middle of Grand Hotel Victoria lies a vast courtyard with
an inviting outdoor swimming pool. Spend hours sunbathing on chic
loungers, reading under a shaded cabana, or taking cooling dips.
A favourite part of your stay might be Erre Spa. At
an impressive 1,500 square metres, it's Lake Como's
biggest spa. Despite its size you’ll find a gorgeous
and cosy refuge of water and chromatherapy.
You can spend hours going between the starry-skied saltwater
Jacuzzi ® , ice room, Himalayan salt room, Turkish bath, or one of
the wooden saunas. Or, you may like to experience a personalised
spa ritual in one of the treatment cabins.
The hotel also has some enchanting gardens that are framed by
the lake and mountains. In the springtime you can breathe in the
delightful fragrance of blooming lemon trees and rose and oleander
bushes. Settle here in time for sunset to enjoy gentle live music with
a chilled glass of wine for an unparalleled moment of zen.
You may never wish to leave Grand Hotel Victoria during your stay,
but if you do, you’re close to the charming and prestigious town
of Menaggio.
A 4 night holiday in Lake Como, staying at Grand Hotel Victoria, starts from £1,249 per person.
Family Summer
Escapes
Make some memories and whisk your entire family away
for a multigenerational holiday this summer.
Have you noticed that it’s always more straightforward to enjoy quality family time
when you’re away from the hubbub of daily life? As we’re busier than ever with work
and distracted by technology and distanced by geography, it’s easy to lose out on
those memorable moments.
That’s why we suggest you bring everyone together for a multigenerational holiday.
Italy is an ideal place to enjoy this kind of holiday as the culture has always revolved
around the family, plus it’s a safe destination within relatively quick reach. There’s
so much to capture your imagination, from the gorgeous landscapes of Blue Flag
beaches and sparkling lakes to the incredible history that is brought to life through the
fascinating stories of local guides and interactive museums.
“It once was common for whole generations of families who lived in the same house
or on the same street to holiday together. Everyone piled into a car for trips to the
seaside and damp camping experiences,” explains Erin Johnson, Marketing Director.
“However, nowadays you can elevate this experience with an affordable and hasslefree
holiday in a place as gorgeous as Sardinia!
“This type of holiday allows grandparents to enjoy more quality time with their
grandchildren, while giving parents a bit of a break,” adds Erin. “But there’s another
reason to do this in Italy: there are an increasing number of excellent resorts that cater
to the family, offering interconnecting rooms and suites, and a wide range of activities
that you can enjoy as a group or split up and do depending on your interests and
fitness levels.”
Romantic
Ravello
24
Citalia.com

From its elevated cliffside position on the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is one
of our favourite spots for romance, as you soak up this dreamy world
of ancient villas and spellbinding views.
“Ravello is a special place. Nestled in the hills away
from the sea, it’s very different to other towns along
the Amalfi Coast. You’ll find stunning gardens,
thousands of years of history, truly spectacular
views, and a quaint, calm retreat in the evenings.”
Heather Green, Head of Product
From the moment you arrive, you’ll find yourself lulled into its soothing
slowness. Ravello is car-free, which gives the town a timeless feeling
as you roam narrow, meandering streets that are peppered with
cafés and craft shops of local art and handmade ceramics. (Despite
its pedestrianisation, Ravello is easy to reach with buses and taxis
shuttling amorous visitors to and from the coast.)
Even if you only sit and sip coffee in the main piazza, you’ll find
hours easily disappear as you quench your spirit observing sleepy,
tranquil scenes.
During the 20th century, Ravello cradled several amorous affairs,
most notably between Greta Garbo and Leopold Stokowski.
There’s a splash of glamour to this little rustic place, as it has been a
creative haven for renowned film stars like Humphrey Bogart, while
esteemed writers and artists including Tennessee Williams, Virginia
Woolf, Salvador Dalí, and Graham Green have all soaked up its
inspirational energy. In fact, during the 1920s, DH Lawrence wrote
Lady Chatterley’s Lover from Ravello!
Then there’s Ravello’s erstwhile villas, which calling them villas is
to downplay their indomitable presence - you’ll find vast, sprawling
castles and mansions with the most breathtaking Italian gardens.
Venture to Villa Cimbrone and its magical Mediterranean gardens,
where you’ll find Ravello’s best viewpoint: the aptly-named Terrazza
dell’Infinito (Terrace of Infinity), where the blue hues of the sky and
sea delightfully collide with Roman columns and statues.
You will also find yourself enamoured by the peachy-pink coloured
Villa Rufolo, a 13th century residence that nestles on its rocky
ridge. In its heyday it held more rooms than days of the year!
Named after the wealthy, powerful family who built it, the villa’s
crowning feature is a lofty 30 metre turret that towers over its
manicured garden.
Villa Rufolo - and indeed the entire Amalfi
Coast - comes alive in July and August, with
one of Italy's best-loved musical events, the
time-honoured Ravello Festival, an incredible
celebration of music and arts.
Popularly dubbed the Wagner Festival, it was created in the 19th
century as a tribute to the German composer and director Richard
Wagner, and today features orchestra, chamber, and jazz music, as
well as art shows, dance performances, exhibits, and discussions.
You’ll find an open-air stage perched by the cliff, with concerts
starting at 4am to welcome the sunrise.
It can be hard to say goodbye to this enchanting town, so we
sumptuous art deco style to include modern conveniences.
Each carriage boasts a special plaque sharing stories of
the famous locomotive it once belonged to. Some even
shaped popular culture, such as Car 3309, which inspired
Agatha Christie to write Murder on the Orient Express
after it was stuck in a snowdrift for 10 days in 1929.
Dress for the Occasion
The heart of the train is the Bar Car, where throughout your
journey you can gather with other guests for a pre-lunch drink, an
evening aperitif, or a nightcap! This is your opportunity to dress to
the nines - gents usually wear a tux for the occasion. Sip on vintage
champagne and enjoy conversation to the tinkle of ivories from
the resident pianist on the train’s own baby grand piano. This is a
journey you’ll cherish forever.
Savouring
Sicily
with Helen Adamson
Citalia’s Managing Director shares the joy
of exploring Sicily at your own pace.
Despite being the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily is one of
those places where it feels like time has stopped. I’ve always found
Sicilian people to be so friendly and generous with their time. Whether
you’re in bustling Palermo, in a medieval hilltop town, or staying along
the dramatic coastline, the atmosphere always feels laid-back.
There’s such a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural splendour
to stitch together. That’s why, rather than sticking to just one spot, I
highly recommend you visit a couple of destinations so you can get a
better sense of the island’s diversity and get more out of your time.
Cefalù
I love Cefalù as it’s a real gem tucked away up on Sicily’s north coast.
It’s a town of two worlds really: you’ve got a lovely beach where azure
crystal-clear waters meet soft golden sands for a very relaxing beach
day, and then you’ve got the centro storico that’s oozing with charm.
It’s lovely to just wander around and soak up the scenery and
atmosphere of the narrow side streets with their ornate balconies. In the
centre, I find myself stopping often to pop into the many independent
shops, which are filled with local and handcrafted goodies.
If you feel adventurous then there are ample opportunities. You could
go on a scenic boat tour along the coastline to the Aeolian Islands,
or perhaps enjoy some watersports, but I am equally happy finding a
café in the cathedral square where I can watch the world go by with
an Aperol Spritz!
Taormina
For me, a holiday in Sicily is incomplete without visiting Taormina,
which sits on a cliff overlooking the glittering Ionian Sea on the eastern
coast. Its archaeological sites are enticing and draw you in with their
dramatic backdrops, from the Greco Roman amphitheatre to the Greek
ruins. It’s also a great town to just roam around and absorb all the
beautiful baroque churches and buildings.
You may recognise Taormina from the TV show The White Lotus, which
was filmed here in 2022. Taormina is undergoing a chic modernisation,
so it’s now not unusual to find designer boutiques like Dior and Louis
Vuitton, and elegant cocktail bars.
If you come across the popular Bam Bar, then I highly recommend
you join the long queue as it’s worth it for tasting the best traditional
granita (a refreshing and fruity shaved ice treat) that’s served with a
sweet brioche roll, which is a Catanian speciality. The café itself makes
for a pretty picture with its eclectic decoration of painted tiles!
Just before dusk I like to visit the botanical gardens, as this is where
musicians and singers gather for live performances, which I think always
wonderfully capture the essence of Sicily’s allure!
I recently had a return stay at Hotel Villa Belvedere, which has been
a popular hotel for our Citalia guests for many years and continues to
deliver with its welcoming hospitality. The views here are stunning:
when you head out to the swimming pool and turn back, you’re graced
with the most beautiful Italian villa with Juliet balconies, which is
framed by the surrounding countryside!
While I was in Taormina this time, I also took the liberty of going on a
few of Citalia’s newest private experiences.
My first one was of Taormina’s old theatre, where I was rewarded with
exquisite views that stretched as far as my eyes could see!
I particularly enjoyed my traditional cooking
class with an Italian nonna, where I learnt to
make ravioli, meatballs, and tiramisu, so that
I was able to return home with a few more
authentic Italian recipes under my apron!
In each destination, I suggest you plan a
walking tour for the day after you arrive so
that you can better orientate yourself. If you
find something that looks interesting enough
to go back and explore further then you can,
but it also means that you won’t miss out on
any of the best gems either.
Then I took a private tour of the surrounding countryside in a vintage
Fiat 500, which really made me feel like a Citalian!
One of the places we visited was the small village of Castelmola, which
feels like something out of an old film with its central square where an
old church sits.
When I entered, I noticed lots of little signs offering fertility, and good
luck, which I think I received when I was handed a glass of their famous
and delicious almond wine, which is locally known as the ‘elixir of love’!
Historic Treasures
Venice, Florence & Rome
Three cities, three unique experiences. What brings them all together is the fact they are living history.
Keeping the Gondolas Afloat in Venice
Back in the 16th century, Venice’s canals held an incredible
10,000 gondolas, but today that number is down to just 350.
Despite this, being a gondoliere remains a highly coveted family
profession that’s passed down generations.
You’ve been on a gondola ride and loved every moment. What
next? Well, why not discover how they are repaired with a visit to
Venice’s famous shipyard?
In a tucked away area of the city just a few minutes’ walk from
Accademia, you’ll find Squero di San Trovaso, the city’s oldest
gondola workshops - and one of just three remaining.
It takes 10 years to be considered
a master of gondola building,
so it’s becoming a lost art.
Squero di San Trovaso holds unusual wooden structures that
house the original workshops. It’s not fully accessible to guests
but when the back door is open, you’re permitted to watch from a
10-metre distance.
Every 11-metre-long gondola is a complex jigsaw
puzzle of 280 pieces made from seven types of wood
that create their distinctive shape. They’re only ever
painted black due to a 17th century Venetian decree.
While it’s rare to find new gondolas being built, which can take 45
days, you will find several ancient vessels under careful repair and
maintenance.
As dusk approaches, you may like to head to Bacino Orseolo, just
north of Piazza San Marco, to watch the gondolas park up for the
night and where gondoliers gather to chat.
Flora in Florence
Hidden away among the Tuscan capital’s ancient streets
you’ll find verdant havens of blooms that create a soulful
natural pause to your sightseeing.
Florence has an impressive number of easyto-reach
and beautifully maintained botanical
gardens and parks, some of which stem back to
the 16th century and pay homage to the city’s
noble Renaissance past. Naturally, they are at
their best in springtime.
Begin in the atmospheric Oltrarno neighborhood with a
visit to the 19th century Rose Garden, a terraced walled
garden that sits below Piazzale Michelangelo. You’ll find an
epic display of 1,000 rose varieties, including 350 historic
species, as well as bronze sculptures by the contemporary
Belgian artist Jean Michel Folon.
Across from this lies the Iris Garden, which was inaugurated
in 1957 and is the only garden in Europe dedicated to a
unique species of giglio (iris) and is open just 20 days a year
from 25th April to 20th May.
You will love Florence’s most famous garden:
Boboli Gardens, which are set behind Pitti
Palace. Created as a private space for Cosimo
I de’ Medici and his wife in the 16th century,
it’s believed they were the inspiration for
the renowned gardens in Versailles.
They are decidedly playful: rather than manicured flower
beds, this sprawling 111-acre space boasts wide and long
cypress-lined avenues that end in gorgeous fountains, as
well as a wonderland of age-old sculptures, grottoes, ponds,
and many nooks and crannies.
There’s also an outdoor museum that boasts some of the
best views over Florence. Visit at noon to hear all the city
bells chime for a touch of enchantment.
Right below Boboli Gardens lie the Bardini Gardens, which
house the popular heritage museum Villa Bardini. Named
after the famous antique dealer who created them, these
gardens are irresistibly charming.
You may find yourself smiling as you wander through
wisteria tunnels and discover mosaic fountains. Its pièce
de résistance is the panoramic belvedere terrace that
spectacularly frames Florence.
HISTORIC TREASURES
On the Trail of Rome's Talking Statues
You may have visited the Eternal City umpteen times and not
noticed the talking statues. But you’d be forgiven because they
aren't given the fanfare they deserve.
Rome’s talking statues effectively became the city’s
social media between the 16th and 19th centuries!
These witty sculptures exist as a brilliant nod to when Rome was
a Papal state and criticism was forbidden and punishable. Citizens
still wanted to express their political opinion, so what they would
do is anonymously pin their anti-establishment messages to the
statues as soon as the Papal Guards weren’t watching.
To stop this, several Popes had the statues moved or guarded
around-the-clock, yet this didn’t make a difference and there’s
a good reason why! The majority of city dwellers at this time
were illiterate, so the dissenters were likely noble or academic
intellectuals with wealth who could pay off a guard. What’s
more, if one statue was unavailable, the dissenters would
move onto another!
Today there are six of these known statues. The most famous
is Pasquino who was the original talking statue and has stood in
Piazza Pasquino since 1501, despite an order by Pope Hadrian VI
to throw him into River Tiber, which didn’t happen due to the
Pope’s ill-timed death.
Today in Italy, any anti-establishment or satirical
message about the Pope is known as pasquinate.
You’ll find Pasquino’s partner-in-crime, the bearded man,
Marforio, in the courtyard of the Capitoline Museums. As a
double act, Marforio would ask loaded questions for Pasquinoto
to deliver the punchline.
The only woman of the group, Madama Lucrezia sits proudly in
Piazza Venezia as a marble bust three metres high. Historically,
the statue was likely created to represent an Egyptian goddess.
However, she received her name and talking character in the 15th
century from the real Lucrezia, a disgraced noblewoman who was
the King of Naples’ lover. Lucrezia visited Papal Rome to request a
divorce, which was denied.
Other notable talking statues include Il Facchino (The Porter
Fountain), the magistrate Abate Luigi, and the grumpy looking
horizontal man known as Il Babuino (the baboon).
If Rome’s talking statues tell us anything, you cannot silence the
Vox Popoli (voice of the people)!
A 9 night holiday that takes in Venice, Florence and Rome, starts from £1,399 per person.
