Historic Treasures
Venice, Florence & Rome
Three cities, three unique experiences. What brings them all together is the fact they are living history.
Keeping the Gondolas Afloat in Venice
Back in the 16th century, Venice’s canals held an incredible
10,000 gondolas, but today that number is down to just 350.
Despite this, being a gondoliere remains a highly coveted family
profession that’s passed down generations.
You’ve been on a gondola ride and loved every moment. What
next? Well, why not discover how they are repaired with a visit to
Venice’s famous shipyard?
In a tucked away area of the city just a few minutes’ walk from
Accademia, you’ll find Squero di San Trovaso, the city’s oldest
gondola workshops - and one of just three remaining.
It takes 10 years to be considered
a master of gondola building,
so it’s becoming a lost art.
Squero di San Trovaso holds unusual wooden structures that
house the original workshops. It’s not fully accessible to guests
but when the back door is open, you’re permitted to watch from a
10-metre distance.
Every 11-metre-long gondola is a complex jigsaw
puzzle of 280 pieces made from seven types of wood
that create their distinctive shape. They’re only ever
painted black due to a 17th century Venetian decree.
While it’s rare to find new gondolas being built, which can take 45
days, you will find several ancient vessels under careful repair and
maintenance.
As dusk approaches, you may like to head to Bacino Orseolo, just
north of Piazza San Marco, to watch the gondolas park up for the
night and where gondoliers gather to chat.
