Football in Italy
Why not make Italian football a fixture in your next Citalia holiday?
There’s no denying it: football is synonymous with Italian culture. The
passion for the game is a second religion.
Is it any surprise, given Italy’s success? The national team has led Italy
to victory four times in the FIFA World Cup, twice in the European
Championships, and played in several more final games.
“Italian football is deeply ingrained in the national culture and has a
long and illustrious history,” explains Stefano Nirta, Citalia’s Regional
Destination Manager. “When fans' voices are raised in song, there's a
unity that is uplifting and hard to find elsewhere.”
An ancient form of football has been played since the Roman Empire.
Members of the famous Florentine Medici family and Popes of the
Vatican played the game during medieval times.
Not only does Italy have a cracking national team, its domestic league,
Serie A, is arguably one of the premier leagues in the world. Serie A
holds the top 20 teams within Italy and changes each year depending
on team wins. The top ones, such as Inter, Juventus, Milan, and Napoli,
strive to win the Scudetto, or little shield, a prestigious decoration that’s
sewn onto the jersey of the winning sports club.
“Football unites the country, but it’s also the source of fierce and
bitter rivalry between teams, particularly those from the same city,”
adds Stefano.
As you watch more closely, you’ll come to enjoy this theatrical style
and all the nuances of each game! Why not embrace the proud calcio
culture during your Citalia holiday?
Football season is almost year-round, but Serie A and the other
domestic games take place from August through to May, with a break
from June to August.
If there’s a particular game that you wish to watch live, then we
recommend you check the schedule and book your holiday and tickets
well in advance. Tickets to Serie A games can range between €40 and
€310, with an average price of around €105 per person.
Citalia can help you arrange your tickets, as well as
stadium tours where you can enjoy a more intimate
experience of a club.
Italian fans (tifosi) berate as much as
support their own team from the stands.
You can combine several club games in one ultimate
holiday, by taking high-speed trains between our
favourite football-loving cities.
