Our Pick of
Islands
While barefoot paradise is the status quo, the balmy island holiday
lifestyle can come in all forms, be it with a spicy kick, decidedly prehistoric,
or distinctly grown-up! We know our favourite bucket list islands for 2023.
Would you agree?
La Gomera
THE ISLAND THAT TIME FORGOT
La Gomera feels like the one Canary Island where time stood still –
and it doesn’t even feel particularly Canarian, as it’s so very green!
Located off the coast of Africa, this small island has been shaped
by volcanoes, from its dizzyingly steep cliffs and captivating
scenery like the basalt formations of Los Órganos, to the natural
black sand beaches, which you’ll find hidden away in coves, as
well as in plain sight. The capital San Sebastián de La Gomera is
the point where Christopher Columbus set sail to the Americas, and
is home to centuries of deep-rooted traditions and craftsmanship.
Due to its unique species of endemic plants and fauna, the entire
island is a Biosphere Reserve, which you can discover in the
ancient forests of Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World
Heritage site in its own right. With an eternally inviting climate of
warm, mild days, La Gomera is the island to disconnect from the
world and move at a slower pace.
COVER STORY
Grenada
THE SPICE ISLAND
The aromatic scent hits you the moment you arrive in Grenada,
which eases you into a delightfully pure and authentic lifestyle.
Everything feels unspoiled here, whether you're trekking to
breathtaking waterfalls or unwinding on the numerous white sandy
beaches, including the famous Grand Anse Beach. Set in the eastern
Caribbean, Grenada is actually a tri-island nation, taking in the
smaller surrounding islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique,
which you can reach by boat for relaxing day trips. Dive into the
crystalline water to discover fascinating dive sites, including the
largest shipwreck in the Caribbean, and the world’s first underwater
sculpture park! Spend your days visiting the many spice gardens and
organic chocolate estates, having a taste of rum with a distillery tour,
or exploring historical forts. Grenada is the place to go if you want to
feel renewed.
Koh Lanta
THE ADULTS-ONLY ISLAND
Koh Lanta is one big national park, home to mangroves, rainforests,
palm-fringed beaches, and coral reefs. The unspoiled tropical Thai
island may not strictly be adults-only, but it sure can feel that way
when you stay at the lavish Layana Resort and Spa, set within lush
gardens. This grown-up resort sits by an almost two mile long stretch
of golden sands, perfect for leisurely barefoot strolls to the whisper of
waves. During your stay you can enjoy complimentary wine tasting,
Thai cooking lessons, and even Thai boxing classes. Spend time
admiring the uninterrupted views from the saltwater infinity pool or
sinking deeper into relaxation at the award-winning Linger Longer
Spa. All you have to do is show up!
OUR PICK OF ISLANDS
Madeira
THE FLOATING GARDEN ISLAND
Immerse yourself into a sublime world of flowers in the Portuguese
island known for its impressive emerald landscapes, bougainvillealined
streets, and wildflower-filled valleys: Madeira. This floral
extravaganza is best witnessed in the perfectly-manicured botanical
gardens of Funchal, the capital, but you can just as easily enjoy them
while horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking, or by riding the
famous cable car up to the clifftops. Pack a picnic and take a boat
ride around Madeira exploring the many golden coves and bays,
or venture into Funchal’s Old Town or nearby villages for a taste of
history. Spend your sundowner sampling the local wine, followed up
with a meal of fresh seafood.
Praslin,
Seychelles
THE PREHISTORIC ISLAND
Praslin is the Seychelles’ very own Garden of Eden. The moment
you arrive you’re greeted by silky white sands that open out to the
expanse of the azure Indian Ocean. From fabulous coral reefs to
ancient sea turtles that nest on the beaches and giant tortoises,
there's much to admire. Away from the blissful beach and the
picture-perfect 18-hole championship golf course of Constance
Lemuria, however, is a world of tumbling mountains and thick jungle
that make up Praslin National Park. Venture into the UNESCO World
Heritage site of the pristine palm forest Vallée de Mai, where you’ll
unveil prehistoric endemic species, such as the giant coco de mer
tree, which dates back over 300 years. Praslin truly is the tropical
paradise you dreamed about.
OUR PICK OF ISLANDS
Corfu
THE HISTORIC ISLAND
Corfu is a melting pot of culture. Of the Greek islands, it stands guard
to the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, between Albania, the Greek
mainland, and Italy, and shares a brilliantly blended heritage after
centuries of invading rulers. The best place to experience this fusion
culture is in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Corfu town. You’ll
similarly find deep-rooted traditions in the emerald landscapes of
olive groves and vineyards. We recommend you take a boat from
the harbour to the nearby islands of Paxos and Antipaxos, which are
shrouded in their own legends. Drop the anchor so you can explore
mysterious sea caves.
Santorini
THE SUNSET ISLAND
Breathe in the spellbinding views, that’s all you need to do. Santorini
is constantly picturesque, not least during the sunrise and sunset
hours over the caldera, or when the daylight glimmers on the
whitewashed walls and blue domes. When you’re not wandering
the little hillside villages or heading off on romantic champagne
catamaran trips, you can head down to the beaches of many colours
- golden, white, black, and even red sands. Plus there are plenty of
museums and galleries to spark your creativity. Stay in the adults-only
Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites, the latest addition to our Santorini
collection. It’s a spectacular boho-chic spa resort that boasts its own
magical sunset views without you needing to step outside.
If you’re seeking an elegant and exclusive stay in the Greek Islands
that’s coupled with award-winning cuisine, then no look no further:
Unique to Greece, Elounda Mare Hotel,
Relais & Châteaux has a dining concept that
invites you into a world of many flavours.
Begin your taste adventure at the property’s
own multi-awarded restaurants by heading
to Old Mill restaurant, where Cretan
cuisine meets gastronomy in a charming
yet chic setting. Then there’s the Yacht Club
restaurant, which has gained a reputation
in its own right for its stylised Greek cuisine.
Perched over a cliff that overlooks the
beach, you can feast on everything from
traditional moussaka to grilled octopus with
a fava dip, to the local cheese saganaki,
invited to board a daily boat to visit
nearby sister property restaurants
for both lunch or dinner!
Each restaurant has its own schedule of live
entertainment that reflects the environment,
from pianists and singers to a live DJ set, so
no two nights are ever the same.
During your stay, you can experience
several theme nights, in which the local
traditions are brought to the table,
including a Cretan night, where you can
eat on the beach and dance under the
stars, and Opa night, where you can tuck
into family-style dishes before smashing
plates in true Greek tradition.
On ‘white night’, guests are
invited to wear something white
and enjoy the many fruits of
the sea cooked in various ways
(sushi, pasta, carpaccio, you
name it) while breathing in the
beautiful views.
There you will find the Ferragamo prestigious
Il Borro dining, which opened within the
Elounda Peninsula All Suite Hotel, following
successful openings in London, Florence,
and Dubai. Also opening in May this year is
a hot new branded Japanese restaurant to
be included in the dining concept, so watch
this space.
At Porto Elounda Golf & Spa Hotel you
can eat right on the sands at Elies Beach
Restaurant, or tuck into mouth-watering
Mediterranean cuisine at the poolside
Nafsika Restaurant.
Each restaurant offers a wellness menu,
in collaboration with the Six Senses Spa
team, so you’ll always have gluten-free, low
calorie, and organic dishes and drinks to
choose from.
Whether you’re on the Dine Around
Premium, which lets you experience all
your dishes in all restaurants and all
the theme nights, or on the Dine Around
to enjoy a la carte meals at specific
restaurants, your tastebuds will be
spoiled for choice.
Village - Hopping
in Majorca An Expert Guide
Away from the grandeur of Majorca’s capital, Palma, and other big cities like Manacor and Inca,
there’s a bubble of smaller towns and villages that offer much charm and pleasure. These villages
are within easy reach of most of our resorts so you can soak up the atmosphere while day tripping.
SÓLLER
One of a sprinkling along the northwest coast, Sóller is one of our
best-loved villages. It captivates with beautiful landscapes and fine
Art Nouveau palaces and stately homes. The preserved cobbled
lanes come alive on Saturdays with market day, where you can pick
up fresh produce for a picnic, and artisan goods like Menorcan
sandals, Majorcan ceramics, or organic olive oil. Sóller is best
famed for its orange trees, and it’ll be difficult to say no to the sweet
freshly-squeezed orange juice.
Venture to Sala Picasso y Sala Miro, a permanent exhibition of
ceramics and engravings that celebrates Spain’s most renowned
modern artists, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró.
The best way to reach Sóller is on its 100 year old tram, which
despite its age still travels the one hour journey from Palma several
times a day. With epic views along the way, as you chug along a
narrow-gauge railway, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back
in time.
You can also take a short train ride to the lively fishing village of
Port de Sóller, where a cluster of boutique shops and cafés dot a
half-moon shaped bay.
FORNALUTX
Fornalutx is an adorable mountain village and you’ll often find
hikers and cyclists lounging around in the cafés for an enviable pit
stop. With its fabulously rustic stone buildings, red tiled roofs, and
quaint streets that don’t feel like they’ve changed in centuries, this is
the place you would fantasise about moving to if you were to leave
your daily life behind.
The village dates back over 1,000 years, and has been ruled by
Arabs and the Catalan empire. You’ll find an incredible array of
historic buildings, including a 17th century defence tower and a
Gothic-Baroque church.
Encircled by the rocky Tramunta Mountains, at every turn you are
struck with arresting views. It’s no wonder Fornalutx was crowned
Spain’s most beautiful village just a few years ago, or why it wins so
many conservation awards.
DEIÀ
Stationed high in the Tramuntana Mountains, Deià is a breathtakingly
beautiful village with a distinctly bohemian vibe. Among the winding
lanes and terraces of olive groves and citrus trees are open spaces
that will take your eyes to the sparkle of the Mediterranean Sea. If it all
gets too tempting, you can go for a swim from the tiny cove pebble
beach of Cala de Deià, just outside of the village.
Deià has attracted both dreamers and artists for decades,
including the introverted English poet Robert Graves, whose village
home is now a museum dedicated to his life. Several A-listers
have also chosen to have holiday homes here and, in the 1980s,
entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson turned an old manor house into
what is today the luxurious hotel La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel.
One of the highlights of Deià is its family-owned restaurant, Es Racó
d’es Teix that’s known locally as Josef’s. Not only is it deeply intimate
in its hideaway location on the edge of the village, it’s also one of
Majorca’s finest eateries.
From Deià, be sure to visit Valldemossa, which is teeming with
medieval charm and home to a royal palace turned Carthusian
monastery. This is where the composer Chopin and writer George
Sand once spent a winter, and today there’s an unassuming
museum in their honour.
ANDRATX
If you’re seeking authentic Majorca, you’ll want to hop along to
Andratx, located in the south of the island. This former fishing port
is relatively free of tourists but offers gorgeous soft sandy beaches
lapped by the azure Mediterranean waters, and a restaurantlined
promenade. Andratx also offers sheer desirability - celebrities
including Tom Cruise, Claudia Schiffer, and Michael Schumacher
all have property here, and the marina is replete with luxury
yachts. There’s a social scene that feels distinctly exclusive as you
tuck into the catch of the day while breathing in the sea air. Every
Wednesday, Andratx hosts its lively market day, where you can tuck
into the region’s almonds, oranges, grapes, and wine!
Considering its location, you may be surprised that it’s perfectly
feasible to walk the seven miles from Sóller to Fornalutx on what is a
relatively easygoing walk.
From Fornalutx, take a taxi or drive to the small town of Selva, which
sits right at the base of the mountains. Graciously tucked away,
you’ll be swept away in the bucolic air. Wander up 42 elegant steps
to reach a beautiful church with a Gothic facade.
Maldives
DEBBY HAYLEY'S
Do you think you could fall in love with island life?
Our very own Personal Travel Planner, Debby Hayley,
certainly has. Paradise for her means the Maldives,
and she’s been lucky enough to have 19 holidays
there in the last 28 years! Debby shares
her love affair with us.
With a job like mine, I’ve had the opportunity to travel everywhere,
but the Maldives really is my most favourite place in the world.
To go there 19 times, we could have paid off our mortgage by now,
but then we wouldn’t have the amazing memories we have, which
is probably why my husband and I keep returning every couple of
years. Nowadays, when the photo memories flash up on my phone,
I can immediately feel the atmosphere of the islands.
The draw for me is the simple beauty of the
pure ocean and the pretty islands scattered
throughout it. The Maldives never asks anything
from you. You can just relax and enjoy the peace
and tranquillity.
22 Sovereign.com

We first went on holiday to the Maldives in 1995, and, as we
flew in looking out of the plane window and seeing all the
atolls, I can still remember how surprised I was that it looked
exactly like in the travel brochure. With so many uninhabited
islands, there really isn’t a prettier view. Back then, we landed
in a teeny weeny airport that had a thatched roof, but today the
airport and runway have been extended.
On our first trip, we stayed in a resort in North Male, and it
was very Robinson Crusoe. Think coral built shack huts with
corrugated roofs, a rusty fridge that sang to us at night, and the
shower, well - that was just a pipe! I wouldn’t dream of sending
people to a place like that, but it certainly was an experience
and back then, we were probably more about the destination
than the accommodation.
As a young boy, my husband always wanted to dive, and over
the years he’s actually got to instructor level. On that first trip
he stripped off his clothes and got into his snorkelling gear the
moment we arrived, he was that excited.
We returned to the same resort five years ago for our 30th wedding
anniversary and the island now has better infrastructure. The huts
have been completely renovated, yet it remains pretty. One of the
waiters told us he hadn’t even been born when we had first visited!
It’s been amazing to watch how this
sparkling island nation has matured.
We usually travel just the two of us, but we’ve also travelled to
the Maldives with friends, and each time it’s been a different
experience. When our son was nine and our daughter was 12
we took them to Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa, which was
a really special experience for them and a lovely week.
In the afternoon we sunbathe or find somewhere under
the shade and have a lovely doze. We tend to grab a
sundowner from the bar as the sun sets, before going
back to our beach bungalow to get ready for dinner.
I’ve had some of the most delicious, perfectly
aromatic and spiced curries in the Maldives,
as many of the chefs are Sri Lankan and Indian.
However, you're just as likely to find pasta,
burgers, salads, and chicken on the menu,
as well as an amazing selection of fresh fish,
such as red snapper and tuna, and there are
often BBQ evenings on the beach. Considering
you’re on an island in the midst of a massive ocean,
it’s impressive to see so much variety - the cooks do
extremely well. I’ve never sat and not fancied anything!
After dinner we sit in the bar and enjoy a nightcap.
Most evenings there’s some sort of activity, perhaps a
presentation from the dive centre, or the local people do
a dance performance or sell their local handicrafts, or
sometimes there’s even a small disco. You’ll never find the
Maldives to be a rave place though, it’s generally very
low-key. We then tend to have an early night before doing
it all over again.
I remember when we first went, I took so many pairs of shoes
and pumps and never wore them. Most islands are just sand,
even in the bar, so nowadays I go barefoot most of the time,
and my feet always come back feeling exfoliated and smooth
– it’s a weird feeling when you come home and walk on the
carpet! Nowadays, I take one pair of sparkly flip flops for the
evening and some basic flip flops for diving, as the boat can
get very hot and burn your feet. (Be sure to take your sun cream
and use it amply. The Maldives is right on the equator, so even
when it doesn’t seem hot, protection is extremely important.)
Of all my Maldivian experiences, my favourite would be the
one time we arrived at Komandoo Island Resort & Spa, which
is an amazing adults-only island resort. It’s extremely quiet
- the only sound is the sea. The staff promptly checked us in
and took us to our beach bungalow. It was a glorious day,
the sun was really shining and, as we looked out across the
sea, we saw baby sharks hunting in the shallows in the light
blue water. It was an incredible scene to witness and we both
stood there with tears in our eyes, not speaking, aware of how
lucky we are.
My ideal day in the Maldives has also become a routine. I
always wake up very early, make myself a coffee and then go
and sit out to watch the waves breaking and the sunrise. It’s a
time where I can think my thoughts without disturbance - no
phones ringing or someone talking, literally just me! Then we
both head off for a very lazy breakfast. Because the Maldives
is an Islamic nation you won’t find bacon or pork sausages but
that’s more than compensated for with other dishes.
If I feel like diving then we both go off to the boat with our gear,
otherwise my husband goes and I take a spa treatment. Or,
we might both go and do some snorkelling around the island.
Then, all of a sudden, it’s lunchtime, which again is another
lazy affair.
You don’t need to be a diver to appreciate
the Maldivian waters, snorkelling is enough.
The atolls are cut out in channels, and you
can see the sea descend into darkness, which
is where the big fish are. You can hear your
own breathing so clearly when you snorkel.
It’s exciting, like being on a rollercoaster ride.
This feeling stays with you forever.
Winter 2022/23
so Journ

I’ve been snorkelling and diving in other parts of the world and
while the reefs are sometimes nicer, you never come across
something surprising like you do in the Maldives because of these
channels. You might suddenly have a shoal of eagle rays swimming
under you, and we’ve even had the joy of swimming with wild
dolphins a few times.
One time, we were snorkelling and could hear the dolphins clicking
but couldn’t see them then, suddenly, they were underneath us,
jumping out of the water. It caused quite a stir with the people back
on the beach. Everyone stood up from their sunbeds and watched
us as the dolphins splashed and nosed around us for a whole
35 minutes. When we got back to the shore, we were treated like
celebrities: ‘Were you the couple with the dolphins?’
I’ve also snorkelled with a whale shark,
the largest in the ocean. It’s got great big eyes
on the corner of its face, and when you come
eye to eye, all you can think is I know what I’m
thinking, what are you thinking?
When we renewed our vows on our 25th wedding anniversary at
Komandoo Island Resort & Spa, we went to a dive site and saw the
most amazing underwater worlds. There was a 25 metre white tip
shark on the reef, with his mouth wide open in a vulnerable state as
he let little sharks clean his teeth for him, like he was at the dentist.
Then, a playful manta ray swam about us for
an hour, which was unusual and special. She
even caught the end of her fin on my face!
Because the coral is so protected the diving and snorkelling are
guided experiences so that guests don’t interfere with or touch
the animals. They are always really well organised and you can
learn so much about the day-to-day of the tropical fish in the reef.
These really are the most beautiful waters in the world. Due to
their protected status, most islands only offer non-motorised
watersports like kayaking and windsurfing, but there are a
couple of islands on the outer reef now beginning to offer
motorised watersports in the main ocean.
Many people don’t realise that the reefs can be ruined. They
are living creatures and if the sea warms by a few degrees they
get bleached and die. There are a few resorts like Ozen Life
Maadhoo that allow you to participate in planting coral reefs
into frames that are then placed in areas where they know they
will flourish.
The Maldives is the ultimate place to
switch off, redefine yourself, and learn
how to forget about work, the shopping,
the laundry, and even the children! In
all my years of arranging holidays to the
Maldives, I’ve never once had a guest
come back and say that they were bored
- in fact they are more likely to tell me
they want to book again!
In the Maldives, you're not going to a hotel on an island, you're
going to an island that is the hotel! Many of the staff stay there
for two to five months and work 12 hour shifts, so you usually get
to see the same people every day, which means you receive
exceptional and extremely personal service. They remember
exactly how you want your omelette cooked or what and when
you might like a drink, which if you were in Europe you’d have to
pay thousands of pounds for. These little touches are true luxury.
One thing that you may not know about the Maldives is that the
islands cannot be purchased so the hoteliers rent them, and
there are rules that they have to upgrade them every few years.
All the resorts are good for culture and nature lovers, but if you
want to take a day trip to Male I'd suggest a resort in North Male.
If you’re thinking about the Maldives for your honeymoon, I would
suggest Komandoo Island Resort & Spa or LUX* South Ari Atoll
Resort & Villas. If you’re planning to travel with children, choose one
of the larger islands where there are bigger kids' clubs and the kids
can run around freely, such as Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa, or
Meeru Island Resort & Spa. Kuredu Island Resort & Spa is also great
as it has a golf course.
If you’re seeking the best diving adventures, I’d recommend
Veligandu Island Resort & Spa as it has an amazing dive site called
Finger Point where you can get an adrenaline rush from swimming
with large hammerhead sharks - you’ll need your wits about you!
There’s always talk that the Maldives are going to disappear
with rising sea levels, but we heard this back in 1995, and while
sandbanks do change the shape of the islands, the islands
themselves, so far, remain. My advice is just go - and kick off your
shoes the moment you reach the jetty!
Thailand
A Cultural
Immersion
Whether you’re staying in the city or by
the beach, go beyond your accommodation
and immerse yourself in the culture of
Thailand, with our top activities.
Bangkok
It’s worth at least one night in Bangkok. The buzzing, beating
capital of Thailand is where you’ll see the modern world of
large shopping malls fused with timeless traditions, such as
the sights and sounds of the floating markets, like the popular
Damnoen Saduak.
Witness the Grandeur of the Grand Palace
The Grand Palace is aptly named. More than just a single palace,
this is a sprawling 18th century complex where you’ll find numerous
wats (temples), and a sanctuary where Buddhist monks chant
and meditate. We highly recommend you come here to witness the
renowned Wat Phraw Kaew, which houses the Emerald Buddha.
There’s also a theatre where you can observe classical dance, and
a museum dedicated to traditional Thai handicrafts and textiles.
Embrace the Rooftop Bar Culture by Night
Bangkok boasts an impressive skyline, and there’s no better place
to enjoy it than from the capital’s famous rooftop bars. These bars
have become legendary, they’re both elegant and animated, but
be sure to go for the golden hour when you can watch the sun set.
Stay at downtown Banyan Tree Hotel and head to arguably the
world’s best rooftop bar, Moon Bar on the 61st floor, where you can
enjoy aerial views over Lumpini Park, or make an evening of it and
tuck into premium steaks and seafood at Vertigo Grill.
DON'T MISS: Songkran Festival
A glorious time to visit Bangkok is during Songkran, the
Thai New Year. Water is the symbol for goodwill and
gratitude, and joyful water fights take place in the streets.
This year it takes place from 13th to 17th April 2023.
Chiang Mai
Known as Thailand’s heritage city, it’s really easy to immerse
yourself in culture in Chiang Mai. For starters, you can literally walk
everywhere, and you’ll have a good chance of stumbling across
markets, such as the fragrant flower market of Ton Lamyai Market,
and ancient living wats, both of which seemingly never sleep.
Experience Thailand’s Best Night Market
Chiang Mai is most alive in the evenings, when local people and
visitors alike congregate in the markets for chatter, shopping, and
entertainment. We recommend the famous Night Bazaar in the
heart of the city, where rows upon rows of stalls sell everything from
handicrafts and clothing to antiques and accessories. Take a pause
anytime you like and dip into the many nearby cafés and bars too.
Get Blessed by a Monk
Stay at Tamarind Village and enjoy a most special experience, an
hour-long Village Walk, where an expert local guide will take you
into the back streets and share stories of the historic monuments
and temples you pass. The highlight of this walk is the chance to
visit a local temple and give alms - an offering of a basket of food
prepared by the hotel - to orange-robed Buddhist monks, who in
turn will bless you.
Phuket
Best known for its tropical beaches, Thailand’s largest island
is ideal for a culture-filled beach holiday. Phuket’s Old Town is
teeming with interesting streets to discover, where you'll find a
string of vibrantly painted townhouses, museums, and a Sunday
market. It’s definitely worth the trip to see the 45 metre tall white
marble Big Buddha that perches out over Nakkerd Hill.
Ride in a Tuk Tuk
Renowned across Thailand and ideal for short trips, a tuk tuk is
the perfect way to get around Phuket. You’ll find these small redpainted
motorised vehicles everywhere. An unusual feature only
found in Phuket is that they have four wheels compared to the
typical three wheels you find in other regions.
Unwind with an Authentic Thai Massage
A quintessential part of Thai culture, you’d be bananas to come
to Thailand and not get a Thai massage. Our favourite place is at
Cape Panwa Hotel, located right on a long stretch of sandy beach.
The Cape Spa is a welcoming, spacious, and tranquil space that
honours traditional techniques.
SUGGESTED STAY
CAPE PANWA HOTEL
Khao Lak
Khao Lak is quite simply a natural haven, where a pristine
coastline of white sandy beaches overlooking the Andaman Sea
join a bountiful jungle that's rich with wildlife. When you’re not
sunbathing, swimming, or surfing, we do suggest you explore.
Venture into the Wild
Khao Sok National Park is an amazing place to trek if you fancy a
break from the beach. There are incredible waterfalls to discover
here, such as the three-level Lampi Waterfall, or the rainbow
waterfall of Sairung, not far from the boutique resort, The Sarojin.
In conjunction with the Mangrove Forest Planting Project, your stay
at The Sarojin ensures at least one tree is planted on your behalf. If
you happen to be visiting on the day the monthly tree planting takes
place then you are welcome to take part, and it’s just one of many
community projects that guests can participate in.
Tuck into Street Food
While the street food scene is popular across Thailand, the Bang
Niang Night Market is a fantastic place to tuck into Thai cuisine.
Right before your eyes, watch as stallholders cook, smoke, and grill
dishes, such as stir fry, noodles, and spring rolls. While the more
popular plates feature veg, egg, chicken, and local seafood, if
you’re feeling adventurous you can also snack on fried insects!
Thailand: A Cultural Immersion
Koh Samui
Tucked away in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is home to
heavenly beaches, chic beach bars, and calm turquoise waters
where you can go swimming and snorkelling, as well as fabulous
diving opportunities in this gorgeous marine park.
Go Island-hopping
Your laid-back island affair gets all the more joyful as you take a
boat and island-hop around nearby pristine islands, such as Koh
Tao, known as the turtle island and famed for its coral reefs, or Koh
Phangan, where you’ll find sleepy beaches and jungles filled with
birdlife. Be sure to take a picnic lunch with you!
Take a Muay Thai Lesson
Thai martial arts are simply fascinating. The lesser known art of
‘eight limbs’, Muay Thai boxing is a wonderful one to learn, as
it helps focus the mind while keeping you fit. During your stay
at Anantara BoPhut, you can enjoy a complimentary 30 minute
morning session in the resort’s sublime grounds.
Krabi
With its staggering sunsets and limestone karts that rise out of the
sea, Krabi is the picture of an exotic island getaway. From isolated
islands, secret beaches, and dense mangrove forests, you’re always
in for a natural treat.
Go Kayaking and Rock Climbing
One of the best ways to explore Krabi is by kayak as the town
is surrounded by water, and beginners will feel inspired by this
tropical environment. Head to Railay Beach and climb Krabi’s
incredible natural rock formations with a professional guide. There
are also one-to-one rock climbing opportunities for beginner and
advanced climbers alike.
Cook Up a Thai Feast
Stay at Rayavadee, a resort styled like a Thai village, and take
home some new skills with you. Once you’ve discovered your
favourite local meal, you can learn how to make the dish for
yourself with one of the resort’s signature cooking classes.
ROVINJ
Into Living History
Wander through the beautiful Istrian coastal city of Rovinj in Croatia,
and you’ll feel like you’re walking in history.
Rovinj is a wonderful enigma. It has a typically Istrian appeal,
becoming part of Yugoslavia and then the Republic of Croatia 32
years ago. On the other hand, Rovinj’s pet name is Little Venice,
after having been ruled by the Venetians for centuries before.
“There’s such a strong Venetian influence in Rovinj that you could
easily be forgiven for forgetting where you are”, says Olivia Gibbons,
Sovereign Luxury Travel’s Email Marketing Executive, who visited
Rovinj last year.
“When I stayed at the Grand Park Hotel Rovinj, it felt like I was
looking at the outside of Venice’s island. St. Euphemia’s bell tower
that looms over the city was replicated to look like the campanile of
St. Mark’s in Venice.”
“You’ll find ancient buildings painted in bright
colours that are situated close to each other along
winding, cobblestone streets that feel very Italian,
plus almost everyone speaks Italian as it’s on the
school curriculum!”
Rovinj’s Old Town became a monument of culture in 1963 and, as
you stroll the streets, you’ll be aware of the numerous chimneys
poking out overhead as you stumble upon small piazzas. In the
morning, you may come across a popular local market, teeming
with fruits and vegetables, local wines, olive oil, honey, and
souvenir nicknacks.
You can delve into the city’s living history with a visit to the Rovinj
Heritage Museum, where you’ll find a wonderful collection of
Italian art from the 15th century onwards, including works from the
great Venetian Renaissance master Givoanni Bellini, and Baroque
painter Nicolò Grassi. But you’ll also find works from modern
Croatian artists here too.
We then suggest you head to Grisia, an alleyway teeming with
ateliers and galleries that dot the street all the way up the
cascading steps to the Church of St. Euphemia. Take your time
to browse the contemporary artistic treasures and handmade
jewellery displayed on the old stone walls.
Come late afternoon, we recommend you find a quiet spot for a
relaxed drink with sunset sea views.
While your gaze will most likely be on the exceptional, sparkling
Adriatic Sea, the forested low hills around Rovinj offer a similarly
beautiful backdrop.
Venture into the shaded woodlands with a 35 minute walk from
Rovinj to Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) just moments from Lone Bay,
where you’ll find a small cove and clear sea waters ideal for
snorkelling.
In the summer months, you can get away from the Old Town’s
hustle and bustle by taking day trips by taxi boat to any of the 14
islands that make up the Rovinj archipelago. One great place is the
twinned island of Crveni otok (the Red Island), with its secluded
beaches, as well as an old family mansion and mausoleum.
Keen to witness the Adriatic’s own Titanic? Take an escorted dive
35 metres down to an old passenger ship that hit a mine in the
beginning of World War One. Or, you could take a charter boat out
with local fishermen at the crack of dawn for some big-game fishing.
WHERE TO STAY
Reid's Palace, a Belmond Hotel, as seen on the BBC’s
Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby
Grand Park Hotel Rovinj
Hotel Monte Mulini
Perfectly blended into the natural surroundings with its
many terraces covered in greenery, Grand Park Hotel
Rovinj is an ideal place to enjoy your holiday in Rovinj. “The
food at Grand Park Hotel Rovinj is delicious!”, adds Olivia.
“It’s all locally-sourced, such as boškarin beef carpaccio,
or pasta with handpicked porcini and truffles.”
Alternatively, for an adults-only getaway, stay overlooking
Lone Bay at Hotel Monte Mulini. Not only does it boast a
spa over three floors, there are ample swimming pools,
uninterrupted sea views, and a beach right in front of
the hotel.
An Italian
Summer
‘The name of Italy has magic in its very syllables.’
We’d be inclined to agree with this declaration by the 19th century English novelist Mary Shelley.
From the Mediterranean sunshine to mouth-watering authentic gelato, you'll find you’ve got all you desire.
Join us in Italy this summer for a dalliance of romantic sparkling lakes, hidden beach coves,
and a feast for all the senses.
LAKE COMO
Dive into the heart-stirring beauty of Lake Como, which is the most
glamorous of Italy's lakes. A popular leisure retreat since Roman
times, several of today’s A-listers have holiday homes here - George
Clooney and Richard Branson among them. Take the ferry that
criss-crosses this sparkling lake backed by dramatic snow-capped
mountains to discover picturesque, suave villages that are teeming
with luxury boutiques. Venture into the palatial waterfront gardens
of Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi, or go sailing and kayaking.
Float away to the five-star Grand Hotel
Victoria, located right on the sparkling
shores just moments from the historic
centre of quaint Menaggio. This elegant
property was completely renovated in
2019, and boasts a gorgeous terrace
restaurant for idyllic lake views, a
spacious spa, and the most beautifully
appointed contemporary rooms and
suites that also honour the past.
SORRENTO
Bubble up with joy in the Neapolitan Riviera, where you can
gaze across the Bay of Naples to the shimmering silhouette of
Mount Vesuvius and unfurl a world of history. Sorrento allows
you to blend pure relaxation with day trips, perhaps stopping
off at a traditional pizzeria, or venturing into winding streets
of cliffside villages. You’re also close enough to explore the
ancient archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Find your perfect base at the
four-star Hilton Sorrento Palace,
home to a spacious sun deck
under the shade of citrus trees, as
well as six incredible connected
outdoor swimming pools, and
large family rooms with a view. If
you feel like venturing out, you’re
just a 10 minute amble to the
centre of Sorrento.
LAKE MAGGIORE
Dream away by Lake Maggiore, the second largest lake in Italy,
which glitters among the natural scenery of the Southern Alps
and boasts palazzo-topped islands. The shores are peppered
with colourful fishing villages, where you’ll find cobbled streets
sheltering quaint trattorie that serve up delicious lake fish and wine
from the surrounding vineyards. What’s more, Lake Maggiore is just
an hour away from Italy’s fashion capital, Milan.
Soothe your soul for the summer at the
exclusive five-star Grand Hotel De Iles
Borromees. In a magical location just
a few minutes walk from Stresa, this
historic late 19th century hotel has hosted
esteemed guests like Ernest Hemingway
and Clark Gable in time gone by. Today
it remains unassumingly lavish, with
its Belle Époque interiors, first-class
amenities, and enchanting views.
Step out of your resort and into the world’s best waterparks!
Waterparks. They make pool days look dull. A way to stay
cool in the holiday heat and entertain quite literally everyone
in your family, and with most boasting multi-cuisine food
decade or two, then you’re in for a treat. Not only are today’s
hydrating adventures more adventurous, they’re more
hygienic and safety conscious too. While waterparks tend
to have similar slides and rides, each make their own mark,
with some offering elevated experiences.
Cannon where you become a human ball, a six lane mat racer so
the entire family can race one another, and an interactive Juice
Factory. There’s also two restaurants and three snack bars.
2. WATERWORLD AYIA NAPA
East’s longest suspended rollercoaster, the Bandit Bomber, which
is over 550 metres long and filled with surprising special effects.
Then there’s Dawwama, a high intensity raft ride for six people,
where you tornado down from mountaintop heights. Learn to surf at
Bubbles Barrel, the world’s largest surfing sheet wave, bodyboard
on the Rush Rider, and get all the family into full-blown water
balloon warfare at Cannon Point.
4. SIAM PARK TENERIFE
Market. There are several star attractions, including the Singha
water rollercoaster, the adrenaline-fuelled Tower of Power where
rides, there are several restaurants, live falconry shows, and a spa.
and rides have been consciously designed around the natural
Curiosities
IN CYPRUS
What you know about Cyprus is about to be turned completely on its head,
from mythical elements to some unexpected quirks!
Flocks of Wild Flamingos
You heard us right! During the
months from November to March,
huge flocks of greater flamingos
stop off in Cyprus during their winter
migration. If you time your holiday
well, you can find these leggy pink
birds feasting on brine shrimp and
warming their feet at a salt lake
just southwest of Limassol, or an
hour’s drive away at the salt lake
in Larnaca. There are plenty of
viewpoints and benches where you
can quietly observe them at leisure,
and we recommend you visit just
before sunset for the best photos. In
addition to the usual pink-feathered
leggy birds, a rare black flamingo
has been spotted in the recent past.
The World’s Oldest
Named Wine
Take a sip of commandaria, a very
special Cypriot dessert wine made in
the foothills of the Troodos Mountains.
Produced from sun-dried grapes and
aged for at least two years in oak
barrels, this delicious fortified sweet
wine was first documented over 5,000
years ago. Allegedly, King Richard
the Lionheart of England declared it
was the ‘wine of kings and the king
of wines’ at his wedding. Celebrate it
at the annual Limassol Wine Festival,
which takes place at the end of August.
You can drink, watch grapes being
tread, and enjoy traditional folk music
and dancing.
A Turtle Beach
Near to Paphos you’ll find Lara
Beach, also known locally as turtle
beach, as it’s a popular nesting
ground for green and loggerhead
turtles. While on this quiet beach, if
you’re lucky and time it right you'll
get to see new sea turtles being
born and then make their way
into the sea. Visitors are asked to
observe the rules that are in place
in order to protect this natural
wildlife sanctuary.
An Abandoned Airport
A remnant of Nicosia’s conflict fifty years
ago is the former Nicosia International
Airport, which was completely
abandoned after the country's military
coup. Today, it’s got a spooky air to it,
but is a photographer’s treat.
40 Sovereign.com

A Cat Monastery
Located southwest of Akrotiri Salt
Lake, the country’s largest lake,
lies one of the oldest monasteries,
which has an unusual claim to fame
as it’s dedicated to cats. There are
many legends as to why you’ll find
so many cats here. Some believe it
was because there was a plague
of snakes brought on by drought
in the 4th century, which almost
prevented the monastery from
being built, so cats were brought in
to help exterminate them. Today the
cats are taken care of by local nuns
and volunteers.
A Capital City Between
Two Nations
Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus, is
the only one of its kind in the world
that is divided between two nations,
so that it’s part Middle Eastern and
part European. A UN-patrolled buffer
zone, which is physically seen with a
Green Line border wall, was created
in the 1960s when fighting took place
between the country's two ethnic
majorities, the Turkish-Cypriots and the
Greek-Cypriots. Today, it’s a sleepy,
oft-forgotten patchwork city that invites
exploration, with outdoor tavernas and
wine bars, monasteries, and mosques.
A Town Teeming with Antiquity
Did you know that all of Paphos - not
just the archaeological areas - is a
UNESCO World Heritage site? That’s
because it has a fascinating amount
of antiquity at every turn. Paphos has
been inhabited since the Neolithic
period, with finds through the Roman
and medieval areas. You can see
ancient tombs, villas, palaces,
fortresses, and temples, including the
12th century BC Temple of Aphrodite,
a short drive from the town’s harbour.
You’ll also find some of the world’s
finest mosaics here, which wonderfully
record daily life in bygone days.
A Wishing Tree
If you head to St Solomon’s
Catacombs in Paphos, you’ll see
a large terebinth tree covered in
ribbons, while its roots emerge from
stone. Previously underground, this
catacomb belonged to a Jewish
lady who became a saint. Legend
says she refused to give up her belief
in God - even when her sons were
tortured and killed at the hands of
the King of Syria. Nowadays, if you tie
a scarf or handkerchief to the tree,
the belief is that she will grant you
your wish.
An Underwater Forest
From Jason deCaires Taylor, the same
award-winning British underwater
sculptor we mentioned in our
autumn edition, comes a unique
underwater forest just off the coast
of Ayia Napa. MUSAN holds 93
imaginative artworks installed right
on the seafloor of the Mediterranean
Sea. These resemble trees, with forest
children playing among them. The
materials used create an attractive
environment for marine flora and
fauna, which you can observe when
snorkelling and diving.
A Hotel with
Village Traditions
We adore Casale Panayiotis in
the Troodos Mountains, as it’s so
incredibly integrated into village life
and is helping preserve traditions.
One minute the villagers might be
teaching you how to make halloumi
or weave Cypriot baskets, the
next you're learning how to make
spoon-sized sweet preserves from a
variety of local fruits, or how to keep
the bees that make the famed local
honey of Marathasa valley. There’s
just so much to do here!
Caring Luxury
With Columbia Beach Resort
Tucked away on the southern coast of Cyprus lies Columbia Beach Resort,
a five-star resort that has hospitality at heart.
With the soothing chirp of crickets as
your soundtrack, Columbia Beach
Resort is an all-suite family-friendly
retreat that exudes elegance at every
corner, from its award-winning Hébe
Spa, named after the Greek goddess
of youth, to its two swimming pools
that harmoniously blend into the
Mediterranean landscape.
It’s not just the sea views over Pissouri
Bay that beckons you into tranquillity.
The secret to Columbia Beach’s
comfortable nature is that it celebrates
the region’s heritage, with its distinct
Cypriot architecture, hand-woven
fabrics, and elegant wooden furniture.
Even the cuisine served up at one
of its gourmet restaurants, Apollo
Tavern, nods to Eastern Mediterranean
traditions, with classical favourites like
moussaka, souvlaki, and yiouvetsi, as
well as a mouth-watering meze menu.
The resort's appreciation of its roots is
further extended by the local charities
that it supports and, when you stay,
you can feel confident that measures
are always being taken to reduce
environmental impact.
Earth
Columbia Beach Resort holds the prestigious international
eco-label, the Green Key Award, which is awarded to hotels that
place environmental sustainability and the local community at the
forefront of their business, through a strict set of criteria. There’s
a dedicated resort Green Team, who arrange regular cleanups
of the Blue Flag beach in Pissouri Bay, and who sponsor and
participate in local conservation events.
Water
The property boasts high-tech water-saving devices and has its
own water treatment facility, so that every drop of wastewater
is recycled and used to water the gardens or supplied to local
farmers. The resort has also partnered with the Greek-based
company Minoa, to provide pioneering FSC certified, fully
recyclable, paper-packaged ‘bottled’ drinking water.
Air
All the resort’s technology is state-of-the-art - and often -
electric-powered to ensure good air quality and to curb noise
pollution. Energy consumption has been significantly reduced,
with upgrades to LED and sensor-activated lighting and air
conditioning. Solar panels now provide heating for the suites,
Hébe Spa, and its indoor pool.
Spirit
Your stay at Columbia Beach Resort helps support several
local charities. Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society provides palliative
care services, supports the families and caregivers of people
with cancer, and offers information about cancer prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment to the wider public. A €5 donation is
added to your suite bill, but you are welcome to donate more
(or not at all) if you wish.
Columbia Beach Resort is also the first resort in the world to have
joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Network, which aims to
improve everyday experiences and interactions for people with
invisible disabilities.
The resort’s caring spirit extends beyond humans too. The Columbia
Cat Care Project cares for the many stray cats within the local area.
They’re neutered, vaccinated, and well-fed and groomed by the
team. Guests are welcome to participate by becoming a ‘feline
godparent’, plus you even have the chance to officially adopt a
cat to take home with you, should you wish!
Is this the World's Most
Breathtaking
Winery?
Santorini holds a secret that may surprise you.
This Greek Island in the centre of the Aegean Sea
holds vineyards that date back 3,700 years, and
today offers a striking contemporary wine culture.
Beyond the stunning sunsets and the sparkling white villages and
blue domes of Santorini, there’s a more unlikely world to be found,
with over 20 wineries across the island.
Vines have grown in Santorini for thousands of years, and it’s the
climate of little rainfall, warm temperatures, as well as the island’s
unique volcanic soil that gives the grape varieties grown here their
particular taste.
When archaeologists were digging in Egypt and
other areas of the eastern Mediterranean, they
discovered amphoras that had once transported
wine from Santorini, which shows the island’s wine
culture has been acclaimed for centuries.
This rich soil, made up of ash, pumice, solidified lava, and sand
known as aspa also acts as a natural shield against disease, while
the wine’s only watering comes from the natural humidity and
sea mist. The most popular wine variety is assyrtiko, considered to
produce some of the most prestigious wine, and you’ll find bottles
of this full-bodied white in most of the local restaurants.
Because of the scorching sun and often harsh winds found in
Santorini, the grapes are given protection using an age-old pruning
method called koulara, in which vines are trained and woven
in baskets. Santorini’s wines boast a Protected Designation of
Origin (PDO) wine appellation, in order to safeguard its local and
traditional cultivation process.
You can visit Santorini’s amazing wineries for wine tastings from
March to November, and we recommend you take a tour to enjoy
multiple wineries. Because of the popularity of the wine tours, they
do fill up, so it’s best to book early.
Many of Santorini’s wineries are small and tucked away, but there
are two that boast fascinating views over the caldera, and those
are Santo Winery in Pyrgos, and Venetsanos Winery in Caldera..
Did you know? Santorini’s breathtaking caldera
was formed after one of the largest ever recorded
volcanic eruptions took place, which collapsed the
centre of the island thousands of feet into the sea.
In the process it gave the main island its iconic halfmoon
shape and a smattering of smaller islands.
Venetsanos Winery
44 Sovereign.com

SANTO WINERY
We highly recommend you visit Santo Winery for lunch, where you can have a meal paired
with wine, or in the afternoon, where you can sip on your wine flight before watching the
magical sunset over the caldera. Alongside other local wineries, Santos Wines invests a lot in
developing cultivation and vinification techniques and preserving the local biodiversity, and it
also has an organic vineyard.
VENETSANOS WINERY
Given that Santo Winery is the more popular choice, Venetsanos Winery is usually not as busy,
yet it still boasts a beautiful rocky terrace overlooking the caldera for those heavenly sunset
views at sunset.
Santo Winery
There are a few other notable wineries we recommend you visit. While they may not have the
caldera views, they sure do have brilliant wines.
• Estate Argyros, a fourth generation winery where some of the island’s oldest vines are
produced.
• Gaia, located on a black sand beach right by the sea.
• Vassaltis Vineyards, where the vines are old but Santorini’s newest and sleek winery
with quality wine.
• Hatzidakis Winery, an organic vineyard that stays true to traditional roots.
• Gavalas Winery, a family-owned vineyard that offers rustic hospitality.
• Domaine Sigalas, a third-generation winery and the best if you want a six course
tasting menu to accompany your wine tasting.
• Koutsoyannopoulos Winery, boasting a long, underground wine museum.
• Art Space, where an old wine cave offers up wine tasting and art experiences all-in-one.
A 7 night holiday in Santorini, staying at San Antonio, starts from £1,185 per person.
Tenerife
TOP SPOTS IN
1
Tenerife is often - unfairly - stereotyped as the Canarian
playground for the youth, yet there’s much more appeal to be
found here, with sumptuous tranquil resorts, and a plethora
of uniquely adult activities. We invite you to get below
the surface of the island.
2
1 RIDE A CABLE CAR TO TEIDE VOLCANO
The snow-topped Mount Veide may seem at odds with the Canarian sunshine you’ve
come to expect from Tenerife, but it’s a wonderful place to explore. While permits are
required to hike, we suggest the easier option - an eight minute cable car that takes you
far enough up the peak for spellbinding views over this otherworldly national park. Be
sure to wear comfortable shoes and a jacket as it can get chilly at this height!
2 SPEND A NIGHT AT THE OPERA
3
Seemingly looming out from the waters in its seafront location, the Auditorio de
Tenerife Adán Martín always has an exciting evening of musical and dance
performances for you. But it also has an annual programme of prestigious operatic
productions that celebrate classical opera from the likes of Giuseppe Verde, Wagner,
and Benjamin Britten, to more contemporary offerings.
3 COOL OFF IN BOTANICAL GARDENS
Along the north coast lies the former fishing village of Puerto de la Cruz. After you’ve
finished ogling the dramatic dark volcanic-sand beaches or delved into the historic
centre for a bite of Canarian food, you can step into the pretty botanical gardens and
get some respite in the shade of the trees. If you’re still feeling the heat, cool off in Lago
Martianez, the town’s public saltwater pool by the old harbour.
4 VISIT A HOUSE OF BALCONIES
In the beautiful Old Town of La Orotava in northern Tenerife is an unusual but utterly
charming historic treasure. The Casa de los Balcones is a 17th century manor house
that’s riddled with intricately carved wooden balconies. Aside from being delightfully
quaint, inside is a typically Canarian patio that showcases many of the Canary
Islands' handmade traditions, including weaving, wicker work, and winemaking.
Right next door is a carpet museum that celebrates the local alfombras de arena
(highly decorative sand carpets) during the springtime Corpus Christi festival.
5 EXPLORE THE UNLUCKIEST TOWN
Also along the north coast lies one of Tenerife’s oldest and prettiest villages, Garachico.
Founded first in the 15th century, it was a decadent place, with one street allegedly
made entirely from marble. Disastrously, it was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the
17th century and had to be rebuilt from scratch. Not long after, Garachico suffered
biblical-style plagues, fires, and floods. The good news is that today it’s utterly
charming. There's a little port where local fishermen bring in fresh seafood, a small islet
called El Roque de Garachico that juts out right in front of the harbour, and popular
swimming pools that were naturally formed by the lava of yesterday.
6 WITNESS THE DRAGON TREE
Again, in the north of Tenerife, lies a small town that’s been shaped
by its agrarian roots, Icod de los Vinos. Best known for its red wines,
back in the 16th century it housed a major sugar mill. As you wander
around, you’ll eventually come across its leading attraction, the Dragon
Tree. Taking the shape of a somewhat top-heavy hourglass, this
remarkable plant species is native to the Canary Islands, and can be
found everywhere - just not normally in such a giant size! The age of
this particular tree is up for much debate, but some locals say it could
be over 1,000 years old. If you were to cut the bark or leaves, you'd find
that they secrete a red resin, and legend has it that it’s the dried blood
of dragons and has healing properties. For years this resin was used
industrially, but now the species is understandably protected.
7 HIKE THE MASCA CANYON
8
As you drive through the winding roads along the northwestern coast
of Tenerife, you’ll inevitably find yourself looking over the great Masca
Canyon. Rich in green vegetation, the canyon is filled with deep ravines
and exhilarating formations that were forged by volcanoes many
millions of years ago. It’s also Tenerife’s favourite hiking spot. You can
head off on any number of remote trails from the tiny mountain hamlet
of Masca. Believe it or not, it was only in the 1960s that this village
became accessible by anything other than donkey or foot! Some of the
hundred-odd residents run craft shops, local restaurants, and even
bars, which are ideal resting places for a relaxing drink and hearty
meal after your walk.
9
8 GO WHALE WATCHING
Take to the high seas! Along the south coast from Costa Adeje, Los
Gigantes and Los Cristianos, you can witness the spectacle of watching
wild whales, dolphins, and turtles in their natural habitat. Whether you
choose to go by luxury yacht, sailboat, or catamaran, some offer glassbottoms
so you can enjoy an underwater view too. Trained naturalists
tend to know the best spots and use sonar equipment to help you get
closer to the pods. You can enhance your experience with champagne,
nibbles, or even with a picnic lunch and swim stop in a pretty bay!
9 DELVE INTO CANARIAN LIFE
10
Get a real taste for the Canarian lifestyle with a visit to San Cristobal
de La Laguna, located on the northern coast near the island capital
of Santa Cruz. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers an Old Town
teeming with 16th century architecture, and local eateries known as
guachinches serve up typical Canarian cuisine. For a real dive into
Tenerife’s cultural heritage, head to the Casa Lercaro, an interesting
museum devoted to the island’s history and anthropology.
10 VENTURE INTO LAUREL FORESTS
Do you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale? Less than an
hour’s drive from La Laguna or Santa Cruz in the coastal north is a
natural wonderland. Anaga Rural Park is home to craggy mountains,
ragged ravines, as well as evergreen forests of laurel trees. The entire
area is dotted with historic, sleepy hamlets. To reach the forest, take the
pathway from the tiny village of Taganana.
A 7 night holiday in Tenerife, staying at Hotel Botanico & The Oriental Spa Garden, starts from £1,275 per person.
