WOOD AND LAC TURNERY
IN BHOPAL, A small group of around hundred
craftspeople shape the wood in a variety of
configurations and combine these to make
interesting toys,containers,vases and
beads.wood turning involves the use of a lathe
on which a rapidly rotating piece of wood is
shaped with a chisel to create objects with
rotational symmetry such as cylinders,spheres
and cones.The lathe could be driven by electric
motors or in the traditional method be operated
manually by using a bowstring which is
operated by hand or by foot.Interesting patterns
are created
by the craftspeople by combing many colours when they coat the surface with pieces
of green,red,black,yellow ,and pink colours mixed with shellac.The utilization of the
leaves of the regional flora in making these toys is exceptional where flat ones are
polished with a blend of khajur(Phoenix sylvestris)leaf and oil,while others are made
to shrine with a combination of dried kevda leaf and oil.
