Toot for Tucker gathers arecord haul
By DAVID HILL
Arecord 2200 bagswere
returned during last week’s
Toot for Tuckerfood collection.
Organiser Bev Wrightsaid she
was amazed by the response.
‘‘It was avery successful Toot
for Tucker. It was agood night
and we are grateful it wasn’t
raining.’’
She was particularly
impressedwith the return from
Oxford and Cust, with 23
percent of the 880 bags
deliveredbeing returned on the
night, whichwent to the Oxford
CommunityTrust’s food bank.
‘‘It was huge.
‘‘It was an outstanding
responsefrom those
communities and it was areally
good night all round.’’
Bev said the volunteer
firefighters collectingthe food
notedhow heavy the bags were
this year.
‘‘We were very impressed
with the amount of food and the
quality of the food in the bags,
whichshows people have been
very generous.
‘‘Normally, the fire brigade
guys could pick up six bags, but
this year theysaid they could
only carryfour.’’
She says donations included
toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps,
flannels and Christmas goodies,
as well as food.
The only drawback on the
Tuesday night appearedtobe
that some people could not hear
the noise of the tootingand
sirens in some areas due to the
wind and missed the collection.
Rangiora Salvation Army
captain Nigel De Maine
describedthe response as
phenomenal, with more than
1000 bags collected in Rangiora
and 300 in the Woodend/
Pegasus area.
Bags are still coming in, so he
estimates nearly 1500 have been
received all together by the
Salvation Army’sfood bank.
‘‘We are eternally grateful.We
live in such acaring community
which trusts us to be
responsible in distributingthe
food as widely as we possibly
can,’’Nigel says.
‘‘We are thankful to everyone
who tookpart,whether in giving
food, collectingorinsorting it
out.
‘‘It was amazing and it will
supplyour food banksuper well
over Christmas and in the
monthstocome.’’
Donationscan still be
dropped off at the Salvation
Army’sFamily StoreinAlbert
and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
The FamilyStore will be open
until 12pm on Christmas Eve
and will open on December30
and 31 as atrial.
Nigel asksthat donations be
dropped off only whenthe store
is open.
He saysthe Salvation Army is
at 10am and everyone is
welcome.
