Interim principal appointed for Haeata
PEGGY BURROWS has been
appointed as the new interim
principal of Haeata Community
Campus.
Dr Burrows will replace current
principal Andy Kai Fong
who is moving to Dubai. She will
fill the role for the first two terms
next year.
Dr Burrows is the former
principal of Rangiora High
School and her appointment will
enable Haeata’s board of trustees
to conduct a robust recruitment
process to find the long-term
replacement for Mr Kai Fong.
“Finding an experienced
school manager for an interim
period can be challenging for any
school, so the board is excited
that Peggy has agreed to take on
the role for the next two terms,”
said board chairwoman Sam Uta’i.
Dr Burrows is a successful educator
with experience in primary,
secondary and tertiary sectors
of the New Zealand education
system.
She was principal at Rangiora
High School from 2003 until
2015 where she managed 200
staff and grew the school role
from 1276 to 1801 students.
During her tenure, she oversaw
the development of the new innovative
learning environment at
Rangiora High School.

helpful working at Haeata with
our vision around modern learning
practices and modern learning
spaces,” said Ms Uta’i.
Dr Burrows has a reputation
of developing leaders in her staff
and during her tenure at Rangiora
High School, the school
produced 11 assistant principals,
four deputy principals, one associate
principal and one principal.
She had a strong relationship
with her school, but was forced
to step down after a dispute
with her employer, before the
Employment Court later ruled
that she should not have been
removed.
Ms Uta’i said the board
are aware of this history
and comfortable with their
appointment.
“Our board includes several
experienced, well-connected
educators and we have used
their networks to do an in-depth
vetting process, so the board is
confident Peggy will be a great
asset for Haeata.”
Dr Burrows holds a PhD from
Canterbury University, which
explored bicultural/kaupapa
Māori leadership principles.
Most recently, Dr Burrows
has been teaching a year 6, 7
and 8 class at Waipara School
and worked with the College of
Education in the professional
learning and teacher education
programme.

Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board has
approved the refurbishment of
two playgrounds at a combined
total of $165,000. Radley
Playground, in Woolston and
King Park Playground, in Mt
Pleasant, are reaching the
end of their lifespan and will
receive new equipment for
a range of ages and abilities.
Construction is likely to start
in May or June 2020.
CYCLING CONCERNS
Concerns around the lack
of cycling infrastructure
close to popular recreation
spots have been expressed.
These concerns were raised
with the Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board at its
December 3 meeting. The
person who addressed the
board said they have noticed
more people biking to
recreation destinations but
often these places do not have
facilities such as cycle stands.
SURF AND SKATE GRANT
The North Wai Boardriders
Club in North New Brighton
has received $1000 towards
its Surf and Skate Holiday
Programme. The grant came
from the Coastal-Burwood
Community Board’s
Discretionary Response Fund.
