Leroy’s beard no more
• By Devon Bolger
LEROY BROWN was relieved
to see he had just one chin after
shaving off his beard for men’s
health.
The Woolston resident and
popular staff member of the
Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln
lost his distinctive beard of three
years in front of patrons on club
night last Tuesday.
He had pledged the beard
would go if $5000 was raised for
Movember.
That figure was surpassed and
$6000 will go to the charity dedicated
to men’s health.
“I was pretty nervous when I
found out I would lose it at first
but I settled in when I realised it
was all going to a good cause and
I was happy to be involved,” said
Mr Brown.
He was initially planning on
growing out the beard again.
“I was planning on growing it
straight back but from everyone’s
comments, I’m not overly sure.
“There’s been a lot of opinions
to stay shaven so we will see if the
pressure gets the best of me,” Mr
Brown said.
He was amazed at the amount
of money raised.
“Everyone should be very
proud, it was quite a feat and we
could make a real difference.
BEFORE AND AFTER: Leroy Brown surpassed his fundraising goal of $5000 for men’s health and
cut his beard off.
BIRDS OF
THE ESTUARY
Tanya Jenkins is
the manager of the
Avon-Heathcote
Estuary Ihutai
Trust, a non-profit
organisation
formed in 2002 to protect one of
New Zealand’s most important
coastal wetlands. Each week she
introduces a new bird found in the
estuary. Her column aims to raise
the understanding of the values
and uniqueness of the area.
THE AMAZING native Bartailed
Godwits breeds in Alaska.
And each September, when the
harsh Alaskan winter sets in
they fly an astonishing 12000km
non-stop at an average speed of
70km/h to Australia and New
Zealand estuaries where they
spend our summer here with us.
Our Avon-Heathcote estuary/
Ihutai host just over 1500 birds
this year. Numbers are unfortunately
slowly declining.
Godwits feed on small cockles
and pipi, crabs, marine worms and
small insects.
Each year in March they return
to Alaska for another breeding
season with only one stop along
the way in estuaries around the
Yellow Sea to feed before continuing
to Alaska. A journey of some
14,000km. Godwits are among
some of the longest distance migrating
birds in the world.
How can we help these very shy
birds? Keep dogs on the lead when
walking near the estuary and pick
up litter.
