Tractor’srevival acommunity affair
By RACHEL MACDONALD
It takesavillage to raise a
tractor. At least that’s the
experienceofAlex Mitchell
and his recently refurbished
1951David Brown
Cropmaster.
David Brownsaren’t
particularly rare. There were
manyaroundinthe ’50s, says
Alex, but he really wantedone
withadouble seat,sothat he
and his wife Karen could ride
side by side on atractorbuilt
for two.
‘‘The twoseater models
aren’tsocommon.They were
made so the driver could have
someone sitting beside them
to helpoperate the plough,for
example,’’ Alex says.
With the Cropmaster
delivered and taking pride of
place in the garage, it became
apparentthe body was tired
and the engine needed an
overhaul,although it didn’t
takemuch to start it. However,
the machine had issues.
‘‘There was waterinthe oil,
dirtinthe fuelsystem,and the
water pump didn’tjust leak, it
gushed,’’ Alex says.
‘‘I turnedtothe expertise of
knowledgeable locals with
different skills, who helped get
it tidied up, andlookingand
going like it doestoday.’’
The bodywork was pulled
off and the huntgot under way
for replacement parts.
‘‘I foundanother
Cropmaster in Nelson,and
one of the guystook atruck
and trailerupthere and
brought it down,’’ Alex says.
‘‘But whenitgot here, it
turnedout it was adifferent
model.Ithad ashorter
chassis,sonone of the tinwork
fitted, which was disappointing.And
the steering
wheel,whichIwas also after,
turnedout to be off acar.’’
Candidate spending released
By ROBYN BRISTOW
The six biggest spenders vying for the
mayoralty or aseat at the Waimakariri
District Council’s table had mixed
fortunes.
The council released details on
Tuesday of donations received by
candidates and their expenses from this
year’s local government election.
Top spender Dan Gordon spent
$37,295.85 on his successful bid for the
mayoralty, of which $20,985 was donated
in support of his campaign.
There was aspending limit of $40,000
for mayoral candidates in the district,
and $20,000 for candidates seeking a
council seat.
Unsuccessful mayoral contender
Oliver Sanderson spent $19.809.26,
while Robbie Brine spent $17,005 also in
an unsuccessful bid for the top job, but
he did win aseat at the council table in
the RangioraAshley ward.
Two candidates, Wendy Doody
(OxfordOhoka ward) and Paul Williams
(RangioraAshley ward), spent just over
$10,000 each on failed mayoralty bids,
but both were successful in being reelected
as councillors.
Phillip Redmond (KaiapoiWoodend
ward), spent $9226 in his successful bid
for aseat at the council.
Neville Atkinson, who has been
elected deputy mayor, spent ameagre
$399.14, to retain his council seat.
Six candidates did not spend acent.
Two gained aseat on acommunity
board, one failed to get elected to
council, and three failed to gain a
community board seat.
In the Hurunui District, where the
limit for expenditure in the mayoralty
race was $14,000, elected mayor Marie
Black spent $10,000.30 on signage,
advertising and delivering pamphlets.
Her deputy, Jason Fletcher, didn’t
spend anything.
Julia McLean, who came closest to Mrs
Black in the polls, spent $7849.37, of
which $2751.50 was donated. Dr Peggy
Burrows, the only other mayoral
candidate, spent $1800.
The vast majority of candidates for
seats around the council table and
Hanmer Springs Community Board did
not spend anything on their campaigns,
while the few that did spent well under
the limit of $3500 in the south and east
ward, and $7000 in the west ward.
Wind farm aims to be running by late 2021
From Page 1
‘‘It will also assist in
meeting the future energy
requirements of our
customers and play an
important role in New
Zealand’s journey towards
resilience and the reduction
of greenhouse carbon
dioxide emissions.’’
Preconstruction work
includes final civil and
electrical design work, as
well as planning for the
predatorfree areas of
native shrub and forest
included in the 127 hectares
of land to be protected as
part of the project.
Mr Lester says MainPower
will be working with all
stakeholders in the coming
months, including
landowners, local
community, iwi and the
Department of Conservation
to finalise the
environmental and
construction management
plans.
The chairman of
MainPower’s board, Tony
King, says the project is
exciting for MainPower,
North Canterbury and New
Zealand.
‘‘The MainPower Trust,
board and executive team
have been working on this
for nearly two decades and
we are delighted to
announce this positive
investment decision,’’ he
says. Offtake arrangements
are expected to be finalised
by July 2020. An offtake
agreement is an
arrangement between a
producer and abuyer for the
sale of the produced goods
—inthis case, power.
Tired old tractor restored to former glory
From Page 1
However, its wheels, tyres, gauges,
switches and seats were useful.
The rest was onsold and has been
transformed into auseable tractor, so
in trying to save the first Cropmaster,
two have now been rescued, Alex says.
‘‘A friend down the road helped
straighten and paintthe old body
panels, seeing as the new ones wouldn’t
fit.
‘‘And Vapor Blast Canterbury, in
Summerhill, cleaned up the fuel system
and some of the brasswork to better
than new.’’
The tractor’s first outing was to the
Rangiora Show in October.
Alex is now hoping to have agroup of
David Brown tractors from Cust —
there are several enthusiastic owners
in the village —head up to the Oxford
A&P Show in April next year to make a
day of it.
Milestone marks Waiau’srebirth
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Acelebration of community
and its response to nature have
been captured in asculpture in
Waiau’s Village Green.
UpstandingSculpture took
centrestage at the opening of
the VillageGreen last Friday.
It is the Waiau community’s
response to the third
anniversary of the 2016
7.8magnitude earthquake,
whichhad its epicentre close
to the NorthCanterbury town.
Sculpted by Aucklandartist
Rebecca Rose,the five
uprights represent people
bringing their uniquequalities
and standing together.
‘‘Therecycled hardwood
refers to the bridges and links
that have been and stillare
vitaltoWaiau’sexistence,’’
Rebecca said in adescription
sent to Waiau Residents
Association presidentSue
Galletly, who led the opening
ceremony.
‘‘Thestainless steel inserts
reflect the braided rivers of the
region and their constantly
changingpatterns.
‘‘This sculpture is asymbol
of humanity’s neverending
dancewith its environment.’’
Sue saidthe communityhad
decided to put money toward
an art work for the Village
Greentoacknowledge the
quakejourney, rather than
hold another event
commemoratingthe significant
impact it had on the town, its
people and the district.
Two Waiau identities, Bruce
Forbes and DaveLott,cut the
ribbon on thesculpture.
They are typicalofmany in
the Waiau communitywho
have donated their time,
machineryand passion to
projects.
Others provided the final
push to keepprojectsalive for
thelocal committees,
organisations and stalwartsin
thecommunity who led them.
Thecelebration on the green
also included the Bruce Forest
Pathway, which links the old
jail to the historical corner of
theVillage Green,its museum,
thestoryboards, sculpture and
theAmuri Historical Society’s
newGig Shed, complete with
gigs and harness.
Thetown now sports anew
playcentre and swimming pool,
while its historic cob cottage is
under repair and theMemorial
Hall is getting aspruceup.
Mrs Galletly toldthe
gathering it was difficult to
name all those involved in the
renewalofWaiau, and the bevy
of localorganisationsand
individuals,along with some
from outoftown who helped
fund community initiatives.
The physical buildings are
there for everyone to see.But it
has been the community’s
heart and soul,and local
contractors who justsought to
cover their costs, or lowered
their hourly rateaswellas
donating their time to support
projects, that have seen the
town rise abovethe forces that
left it reeling.
Achoir from the Waiau
Festival
in park
By DAVID HILL
Rangiora churches are getting into the
festive spirit.
Local churches have joined forces to
bring aChristmas Festival to Rangiora’s
Victoria Park on Sunday, while the
Rangiora Baptist Church (RBC) is
hosting afree community lunch on
Christmas Day.
RBC youth pastor Stephen McQuarrie
says his church has joined with six other
local churches to organise the Christmas
Presbyterians, Salvation Army, Gateway
New Life, Thrive, Grace Pegasus and
Grace Plains.
‘‘Last year we (RBC) did Christmas in
the Park instead of anormal Sunday
service and this year seven of the local
churches have come together to organise
acommunity event.
‘‘It’s the awesome thing about asmall
community, that we can do these things
together,’’ Stephen says.
There will be achoir performing,
Christmas carols and local children will
tell aChristmas story.
This free community event will include
bouncy castles, facepainting, pony rides
and other children’s activities, as well as
food trucks and afree barbecue.
Acollection will be taken at the
festival, which will go to the Rangiora
Salvation Army to support local families.
The festival runs from 10am to 1pm.
The RBC is hosting aChristmas Day
church service at 9.30am, followed by a
They were in the same class several times,
and both alsoplayed touch rugbyfor Ohoka/
‘‘We werepart of areally academic, sporty
Hugh was headofrugby.’’
Hugh,who is alsosportyand enjoys playing
was crucial in his development.
‘‘Whether you were particularlygood at
went through Ohoka School as well.
‘‘There will be pointsnext year wherewe’ll be
Amagical time of year
As we enter into the holiday season, I
wish to extend to you all best wishes for
aMerry Christmas and ahealthy, safe
and happy New Year.
It is atruly magical timeofyear, as
our community comes alive with
twinkling lights and decorations,Santa
parades, carol singingand the
spreadingof goodwill.
The Christmas Tree Festival in the
council foyer adds somethingspecial
each year.
Thisisits 13th year. Yet another
excellent display has beenmounted
this year. Thank you to the team that
put this together.
The Ashgrove SchoolSanta’s Grotto
was another excellent featurethis year.
The Christmas House, at 21 Queen
Street, Rangiora, and the Christmas
Wonderland at the Oxford Town Hall
are also well worth alook.
We are very lucky to have
organisations that organise festive
activities for our community each year.
Thankstoall those who go to such an
effort.
When you are looking to cross some
items off your Christmas shopping list, I
Nanda finds solace in helping others
By DAVID HILL
Helpingothersovercome tragedy has
changed Nanda Rammers’life.
The North Canterburyresident has
turned her life around by supporting
members of the Muslim community in
the wake of the March 15 terrorist
attacks in Christchurch, aftersuffering
abreakdown herself earlier this year.
NandaarrivedinNorth Canterbury
from the Netherlands in 2001 with her
husband and daughter, and ‘‘three
suitcases and no keys’’.
She trainedininterior design,
started her own business in 2008 and
beganteachingatthe Ara Instituteof
Canterbury 2 1 ⁄2 years ago.
One of her colleagues was in the
Linwood mosque when the shooting
occurred and he returned to Ara while
it was still locked down. ‘‘I will never
forget the look on his face.’’
Nandawantedtohelp the widows,
but her workloadwas takingits toll and
she fellsick soonafter. ‘‘That was the
turning pointinmylife.Istarted to do
yogaand meditating.’’
Whenshe eventually returned to
workatAra, shebegan organising a
‘‘pamper day for about 80 happy ladies’’
at the campus marae in September.
‘‘Wegot all sorts of people on board,
fromthe health and beauty school at
Ara and we got agrant from the
Christchurch City Council for the food.
‘‘Itwas an incredible day, with a
happy focus and everybody was ableto
connectagain.’’
It was such asuccess thatasecond
pamper day was organised lastmonth.
She is now planning awellbeing dayfor
the men.
‘‘Traumawill staywith you forthe
restofyour lifeifyou don’t address it.’’
Nanda says she has madenew
friends and established ‘‘a totally new
network out of theexperience’’.
One Muslim family evenadopted her
as partoftheirfamily. ‘‘It has been
extremelyrewarding. It puts thingsin
yourown life in perspective.’’
Being amigrant herself, Nanda says
she can relatetothe challenges faced
by the Muslimcommunity in adapting
to anew country.
‘‘I think it is quite abig thing.Iknow
how hard it is to come into acountry
and start again.
‘‘You are coming into acountrythat
you think of as western, but it’s not a
Europeancountry.’’
The Loburn resident says new
migrantsface the challengeof
adjusting to a‘‘new culture and
mindset, to make yourselfathome and
feelthat you belong here’’.
For the Muslimcommunity, there is
the added challengeofpreconceived
views held by some.
International VolunteerDay was
celebrated on December 5and this
year’s focuswas on promoting
inclusion, diversityand nondiscrimination.
Hunting and fishing continues to play a
huge roleinJames Morris’s life.
His wifeAnna also enjoysboth pursuits
and the couple had theirfirst date 12 years
ago on ahunting trip.
Jamesalso proposed to Anna on a
hunting trip.Now they have theirown
hunting and fishing storeinRangiora, as
the newowners of North Canterbury
Rivers to Ranges, formerlyHamills
Fishing and Hunting Specialists at 98 High
St. Negotiations to buy Hamills has takena
couple of years, with Jamesand Anna
taking overthe business in midOctober.
‘‘I have beenworking on the family
sheepfarm, Berriedale,which is local to
Amberley, for the past 10 years,’’ James
says.‘‘Unfortunately, unforeseen health
problems in the family changedthe longterm
plans,soweset about lookingfor
another opportunity.’’
That occurred whenJames was in
Hastingsonahunt with friend and Rivers
To Rangesshop owner Jeremy Hanaray.
The two men talkedabout expanding
Jeremy’s trademarked name of Riversto
Ranges to theSouth Island.
When Jamesreturned home, he
discussed the idea with Anna.‘‘Shewas
quiteexcitedaboutthe prospect of
operatingour own business and things
progressed from there,’’James says.
Anna,James and their twoyearoldson
Harrystill liveonthe familyfarm,20
minutes’ drive from theirnew Rangiora
business. ‘‘Harry is the fifth generation
Morris on Berriedale,whichhas been in
the family for over90years,’’ James says.
‘‘He loves coming out hunting withus.’’
Growing up on the farm, Jamesalways
spentalot of timeoutdoors, but hunting
and fishing was always his main focus.
‘‘We had holidays in the Marlborough
Sounds where my brothers and Icaught
our dailydinners freshfrom the ocean,
and Ishot my firstdeerwhen Iwas 12 years
old.’’
James has hunted nationwide, in
Australia and Europe, but says nothing
beatsbeinginthe Canterbury high
country, especially above the bushline.
‘‘We are lucky in Canterbury withthe
opportunitieswehave to freely hunt and
fish,’’ James says.
He has huntedcommerciallyover the
years and has been registered to supply
animals to the pet foodindustry for more
than 10 years. ‘‘I havesupplied Canterbury
Pet foods with rabbitsand hares as well as
spending winters catching possumslocally
for their fur and to help keep the area TB
(tuberculosis) free.’’
For the last12years he has also been
writing abouthis hunting adventures in
Rod and Rifle magazine, and in 2012 he
published abook called Student Hunter,
about his hunting exploits as aUniversity
of Canterbury student.
Anna and James intendtodevelop North
Canterbury RiverstoRanges into ashop
that offers advice and servicetothe
community. ‘‘We offergunsmithing, sightins
of rifles and havestarted buying
possumfur. We are humbled by the
support we have received fromthe locals,
and are really enjoying the socialaspect of
our new venture, which is very different
from farming.’’
Home crowd proves alure for Tim
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Canterbury’s Te Mania Angus Rodeo is
special for cowboy Tim Costello.
It is his local rodeo, and this year he
will have his own bucking horses at the
event for the first time, which makes it
extra special.
The rodeo is at the Mandeville Sports
Centre, on Saturday, January 4, with the
gates opening at 10.30am. The main
events start at 11am with the bronc
bareback riding,
Tim, who hails from Hawarden in
North Canterbury, says being able to
compete in front of ahome crowd is also
great.
‘‘There is usually some extra support
cheering you on and makes you want to
try extra hard,’’ he says.
Tim, asaddle bronc rider, spent June
and July in Canada competing in the
Saskatchewanbased rodeo association,
known as the Canadian Cowboys
Association.
He returned for three weeks in
October to compete in the finals,
finishing the season 5th in the standings.
Earlier in the year Tim and fellow
rodeo competitor William Jamison
broke the mould of the traditional
rodeo, organising afastpaced rodeo
with invited riders at the Hawarden
A&P Show. It was so successful it
appears it will become afeature of other
shows in the future.
They were aiming at quality
competitors and bucking stock, and a
short show that kept the crowd
entertained.
They kept it to Roughstock events —
Barrel racer ... Fourteenyearold Kaylee Hood in action.
bareback, saddle bronc and bullriding.
Meanwhile, 14yearold Kaylee Hood
loves the challenge of barrel racing at
rodeos and is looking forward to doing
well on the circuit over the summer.
Kaylee, from Rolleston College, will
compete at the Mandeville event.
She was amember of the New Zealand
High School Rodeo team that competed
in the transTasman competition in New
Zealand in February and Australia in
August.
She says it’s agreat experience
competing in Australia, particularly as
riders have to get to know someone
else’s horse quickly.
‘‘Your mount is drawn out of ahat.
You have to quickly change your riding
style. Some go adifferent side first,
others need to be pushed hard to keep
them going, others you have to hold
back,’’ she says.
But she loves nothing better than
competing on her own horse, Fraser.
‘‘He is my favourite, Ihave had him for
three to four years,’’ says Kaylee, who
has placed consistently on him.
Last year she finished fifth at the
Canterbury rodeo.
Rodeo pursuits are afamily affair,
with mum having taken part in barrel
racing and her dad, team roping —a
sport that takes them to the North Island
and to the deep south.
While activities in the ring will
provide much of the entertainment,
there is plenty to keep everyone
entertained and well fed outside.
There will be alolly scramble, a
bouncy castle, helicopter rides, food and
bar facilities.
Gate Prices: Adults $25, Children $10,
Family $60. The Mandeville Sports
Centre will be signposted from the
motorway, north of Christchurch.
In the saddle ... Tim Costello is looking
forward to Canterbury’s Te Mania Angus
Rodeo early next year.
The Oxford Men's Shed is building a
Mr Burton says the community, DOC,
and the WaimakaririDistrict Council
have all pulled together to help produce
the walks along with the help of the
black beechforestecosystem.
Agroup of local studentsare critical to
running the trappingoperation, which
has seenanoticeable drop in wasps, and
an increase in birdsong.
‘‘We have 60 traps out so far which
have accounted for around 500 possums
and agood number of stoats, rats and
hedgehogs.’’
Mr Burton says the students are also
invaluable helpers in marking out the
route for the nexttrack —the third stage
of the project.
‘‘This willbeachallengingfour or so
‘‘Route marking is well under way now
on this Skyline Track and we hope
people can be walking it by early2021,’’
Mr Burton says
Visitorsare asked to park down by the
Awonderland for wildlife
By SHELLEY TOPP
The Northbrook Wetlands
Reserve is one of Rangiora’s
mostpicturesque parklands.
However, it wasn’t alwaysthis
way.During the mid1800s it
was the site of early European
industry, with flax mills, a
brewery, fellmongery and a
tannery along the Northbrook
Stream.
In the 1930sasewage system
was established in the area and
remainedthere for more than
40 years.
The Waimakariri District
Councilowned reserveand
stormwater treatmentarea is
close to the Rangiora central
businessdistrict, with access on
Cotter Lane,off Northbrook
Road.
In recent years, restoration
work has transformed the
reserve into apeoplefriendly
area which is home to awide
range of wildlife, including
paradiseshelducks,scaups,
black swans, snails,insects,
eels, kingfishers, bellbirds,
fantailsand manyother birds.
There is an easy 1.5km walk
around the reserve, with places
to sit or picnic alongthe way.
Several informationboards
outline the history of the area
and the visitorrules.
Dogs are not allowed in the
reserve.‘‘As part of recreating a
healthy stream environment, we
hope to attract wetlandbirdlife
back into the area.Soplease no
dogs,’’ one of the noticeboards
states.
Feeding the ducks is also
banned: ‘‘We wanttoencourage
native wildlife to feed and breed
here, not introduced mallard
ducks.’’
The reserve is aspecialplace
to visit over the Christmas/New
Year holidays, or any time, for a
quiet stroll, apicnic,arun, or to
observe the birdlife.
If you are travelling there by
car, don’t stay latebecause the
gates are lockedatnight and
there is a$50 charge to unlock
themtoget your car out.
Visitorstothe reserveare also
toldvia asign that ‘‘60 percent
of Rangiora’s stormwater enters
the reserve via the Northbrook
Stream and adrain. There is so
muchlife heresoplease do not
put toxicchemicals down the
drain because thisiswhere they
end up.’’
Pets at risk
at Christmas
Animal ownersare being urged
to be vigilant over what their
pets eat thisChristmas.
The SPCA saysowners should
not share human foodwith their
pets,and should think twice
aboutleaving foodinplaces that
mightbeeasily accessible to
pets.
‘‘Many common treatsand
snacks we humansenjoy as part
of our holiday celebration –
including avocado, macadamia
nuts,ham, grapes and raisins –
can cause internal damageand,
in serious cases, leadtodeath,’’
SPCA chief executive Andrea
Midgen says.
‘‘It is important to know that
ignoring your pets’pleading
facesand smooches is actually
in theirbest interest.’’
Even pet owners who are
careful aboutwhat theyfeed
theirpet need to be awareabout
the places theirpet mightfind a
feast, such as in handbags, on
tables, or in rubbish bags.
Chocolate is particularly
dangerous for dogsand cats
because it can causeelevated
heartrate, seizures vomiting
and diarrhoea, but other festive
foodsare also toxictopets.
Theseincludefruitcake or
Alcohol, caffeine, macadamia
Competitive edge ... Megan Edwards is going places in Frisbee sports.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Megan ahigh flyer
in world of Frisbees
By LINDSAY KERR
As Megan Edwards neared the end of
her local schooling at Rangiora High
School in 2015, little did she know that
her sporting world was about to
dramatically change with an
introduction by brother Scott into the
world of Ultimate Frisbee.
Her latest achievement will see her
jet off to the world championships in
the Netherlands next year as part of
the New Zealand women’s open team.
Megan's first introduction into her
new sport was met with instant
approval.
Prior to that, her sporting pursuits
had been adiet of the more traditional
kind —tennis, football, netball and
basketball.
Ultimate Frisbee is aphysically
demanding game for the fit and robust.
It has 18 players per team, with
about 25 teams registered nationally,
involving around 500 people.
Apart from the throwing of afrisbee
among friends at picnics and outdoor
social occasions, the thought of
engaging in acompetitive situation
that involved the Frisbee had never
entered Megan's head.
Success in the sport was almost
immediate. She was selected for a
New Zealand under20 side to play in
the 2016 world junior championships
in Poland.
In the same year she won the
Rangiora High senior tennis title and
received an oak award from the school
for her sporting achievements.
The adventure to Poland netted a
sixth place for the New Zealand side,
along with avictory over Australia.
Although then attending Massey
University, Megan played for her
victorious Christchurch club side, the
Chicks, at the 2017 national
championships.
This victory entitled them to attend
the 2018 world club championship in
Cincinnati, atournament where they
emerged with the team spirit award.
Megan, for her part at the 2018 local
mixed nationals, won the Female Most
Valuable Player (MVP) Award.
In 2019, she won the women's MVP at
the mixed nationals and attended the
under24 world championships in
Heidelberg, Germany.
The climax came after being
selected for the New Zealand women’s
open team to contest the world
championships.
Being aminor sport on the New
Zealand scene, overseas competition
is costly for competitors, who must
largely front up with their own
funds.
Sustainability move praised
Kaiapoi Preschool has been rewarded
for rethinking how it looks after the
environment.
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon was
on hand to congratulate the preschool
for being the first school or preschool to
complete the first stage in its ‘‘rethink
journey’’, offered by Eco Educate.
‘‘I think it’s afantastic initiative. It’s
really easy to do and it’s tailored to suit
an individual school or early learning
centre,’’ Mr Gordon said.
‘‘It’s important that we all learn about
sustainability. Ifind Ilearn alot from my
nephew and niece, who come home and
see what Uncle Dan isn’t doing and is
now doing.’’
Eco Educate rethink educator Lesley
Ottey said it took eight years to develop
the ‘‘rethink’’ initiative, so it was
pleasing the see the first school/
preschool achieve the first step.
It was developed as an alternative to
the Enviro schools programme, with
schools able to decide how they want to
progress.
‘‘It’s ajourney of sustainability and
rethinking,’’ she says.
‘‘The centre decides how they want to
do it. We didn’t want it to be aboxticking
exercise.’’
The initiative began as apilot project
of 10 schools and preschools in the
Waimakariri district, with another 14
signalling they want to get involved.
Kaiapoi Preschool received a
certificate, seeds and abook to
acknowledge its achievement.

Sweet strawberries get their day in the sun
By SHELLEY TOPP
Strawberry lovers
packed into the Kaiapoi
Food Forest last
Saturday afternoon to
feast on their favourite
summer fruit at the
inaugural Strawberry
Fair.
It was afamilyfriendly,
strawberrythemed
day, with picnics
and dancing on the lawn
to live music played by
the Garden City Big
Band.
The fair also proved
positive for stallholders
selling strawberrythemed
products, with all
the fresh strawberries
selling out and food
retailers —selling baked
goods such as cakes,
scones and cupcakes —
also emptying their
stalls.
The fair was also the
first Zero Waste event in
the Waimakariri District.
‘‘The theme was
perfect for the Kaiapoi
Food Forest as we are
showing how to grow food
sustainably, so having a
Zero Waste event was a
perfect fit,’’ food forest
trustee Brent Cairns
said.
‘‘We had Lesley Ottey
from EcoEducate guide
us how we could make
the event work well and
the retailers were right
behind the idea.’’
The Bookers grow strawberriesall year
“Wedon't usuallyhave aheap of
Weather achallenge
By DAVID HILL
Pricesare good, butthe latestseasonhas
had its challenges for North Canterbury
farmers.
Federated FarmersNorth Canterbury
president Cameron Henderson says strong
prices aregiving farmers plenty of
confidence,but achillyspring and adry
start to summer have set production back
thisseason.
“It's had some challenges.
‘‘After awet and coldOctober which
slowed growth down, we had anormal
November until the wind in the last week
of the month whichknocked afew people
around.
“It'sbeen atough two weeks since then
and it willtake acoupleofweekstocatch
up, but it couldbeworse.”
But Mr Hendersonsays adecentamount
of rain before Christmaswill put farmers
back on track.
Milk productionisdown compared to
the same periodlast year, but there is still
timetocatch up.
And with Fonterra'smidrange farmgate
milk priceforecast of $7.05 and low
interest rates, it is “hardtocomplain, aside
fromafew weather hiccups”.
“Theeconomics of farming are pretty
goodatthe moment,” he says.
New regulations are stillcreating
headachesand theclimatechange debate
has “only really just started”, but at least
Federated Farmersand other
organisations are part of the conversation
withthe government, Mr Hendersonsays.
“We are certainly not going to get the
perfect outcome, but hopefully we will get
morereason and less politics.”
He is optimistic Canterbury's progressin
the freshwater space,comparedtoother
regions, will mean few changes for local
farmerswhennew legislation is
introduced.
“Thefencing off of waterways and alot
of the things thatare in theproposals,we
are already doing and probably doing it
Cameron Henderson ... ‘‘The economics of
farming are pretty good at the moment.’’
better than whatthe nationalstandards
are.
“The best thing the government coulddo
in Canterbury is leave us alone to get on
with it.
‘‘Farmers,local councilsand the wider
community have put ahuge amount of
effort in through the zone committees.
“And it's not just councils telling us what
to do, it's communities realising whatthey
need to do and that includes farmers.”
Mr Henderson is also the Waimakariri
Zone Committeevicechairman.
The zone committee is now turning its
attention to local catchment plans, with
localpeople collaborating at alocal
catchment leveland going beyond the
regulations, “andIthinkthere is alot of
valuetobehad out of that”.
“I can certainly see value in setting a
nationalvision and astrategicdirection,
but in terms of setting one strictgoal for
the whole country, they are quickly
learninghow difficultthat can be because
of our diverse river systems.
“EveninCanterbury there is diversity
between the large alpine,braided rivers
and the catchmentsinthe lowland, springfed
rivers, and we have ahuge diversityof
soil types.”
Sheep industry in good heart
Recent ram fair pricesmight not reflect it,
but the sheep industry is in agood space.
Livestock industryrepresentatives
spoken to by the North Canterbury News
say the industry is strong on the back of
healthy lamb and mutton prices.
RuralLivestock Canterburylivestock
manager DonaldCooke says, aside from
the woolprice, the industry is “in the best
placeit's beeninalong time”.
This season’s ram sales producedsome
mixedresults, with goodrams sellingfor as
little as $1000and several “beingpassed
on”.
“Whenyou considerfarmersare getting
$150 to $180 for aprime lamb, the rams are
pretty cheap,”MrCooke says. “Theold
rule of thumb was 10 lambstoaram, but
youcan pick up agoodram for $1000.”
Several ramsfetched at least $2500at
salesthroughout the region,while the
Stevensonfamily, of Cheviot, paid arecord
$17,500 “for atruly exceptional” Dorset
Down ram, he says.
Two rams sold for morethan $10,000 at
last month'sCanterbury A&P Association

Staff and Management would like to wish you avery Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year.

ram fair, but onethird of the 200 rams put
up for sale wereleft unsold.
PGG Wrightson upperSouth Island
genetics representative Simon Eddington
attributed it to relatively low ewe numbers
on farms followinglandusechanges over
the last20years.
Onfarm store lambsales are also
producing mixed results, with the farmers
who hostedsales earlyon“being wellrewarded”,
Mr Cooke says.
“The prime stock is sellingvery well, but
we've seen abit of acorrection in the store
lamb sales, with the dry conditions and the
high river levels impactingonprices over
the last couple of weeks.”
Hazlett Rurallivestockgeneral manager
Ed Marfell saysthe primelamb market is
“riding abit of awave fromthe demandfor
protein in Asia”.
“Nothing lasts forever, so we have to
make the most of it while we can andput
abit away. And justenjoythe ride.”
Mr Cookeanticipates the region's ewe
fairs,beginning at Hawarden nextmonth,
will be strong.
Eight-wicket win keeps
Southbrook in touch
CRICKET
Southbrook thumped Weedons by
eight wickets last weekend to
keepintouch with the
competition leadersinthe CRV
Ambreed Country Premier One
Day competition.
Southbrook’s Sam Ermerins
and Arafat Bhuiyan were
imposing with the new ballonthe
Southbrook Park pitch.They
knocked off Weedons’ quality top
order beforeDarrynBoylerattled
throughthe middleorder.
Limping to 132 all out in 40
overs, it was nevergoing to be
enough and Southbrook coasted
home, largelythanks to an
impressive unbeaten 93 by Matt
Boyle, whose innings included 17
fours and two sixes, and came off
just65balls.
Contestleaders
LeestonSouthbridge can relax
overthe festivebreak at the top of
country cricketafterahardfought
win over Lincoln.
Harry Chamberlain’s fine
season continued with amatchdefining,
runaball 62 at Lincoln
Domain on Saturday.
It was the dominant inningsin
LeestonSouthbridge’s
accumulation of 184/9 in the
side’s allotted 45 overs.
Chamberlain, who enjoyed a
500run offseason playingin
Darwin, was again in the game
with the ball, grabbingkey toporderwicketsand
helping reduce
Lincoln to 34/3 in its chase.
Middleorder batsman Liam
Robinsongave Lincoln asniff of
victory, withafine 51 off 89 balls.
Afterhewas dismissed, thetail
wagged valiantly, but the
defending champions held their
nervetosecure a10run win, as
Lincoln stalled at 174/9 after 45
overs.
Knock of 165
Astunning, mammoth innings
of 165 from Rhys Mariulifted
OxfordRangiora to asuperb
26run win overCheviot on
Saturday.
Mariu, fresh from being named
in the 15man New Zealand
under19 squad to competein
next year’s Cricket WorldCup in
SouthAfricainJanuary
February, was ruthless in
demolishing the Magpies’ attack.
OxfordRangiora made an
imposing 279/5 in its 45 overs and
wouldprove too many for Cheviot
to chase, despite agood knock
from Ben Hartland.
Jack Waghorn ripped through
Cheviot’s middleorder,snaring
sevenwickets to help complete
the strong victory.
Winningform
Sefton got back to winning form
with afine team performance in
beating Darfield by 37 runs.
Eight batsmen in double
figures, led by aquickfire 40 from
Canterbury paceman Fraser
Sheat battingatNo. 4, saw the
Seals post 202 all out.
Zak Foulkes (55runs off 74
balls) and Tim Boyle (52 off 69) got
the chaseoff to aflying start,
hoisting Darfield to a
commanding 115/1 in 24 overs.
But when they both fellinquick
succession, Darfield crumpled to
be all out for 165, with BarryCross
the chiefdestroyer, claiming 4/27.
The competition now takes a
break overthe Christmas
holidays and willresume with
