Let me take you back to a small fishing village on the Amalfi Coast in 1950s Italy. I was born just
metres from the sea on a stormy January night, and the sea was the first sound I heard. Growing
up in this beautiful unspoilt Garden of Eden, those waters became my paddling pool, and the
mountains my backyard. I was always amazed that tourists came to visit the Amalfi Coast. As for
us, we didn’t go anywhere – we didn’t need to. It was only when I came to England at the age of
20 that I appreciated going on holiday. And where did I go? Of course, it had to be back to Italy.
This country has such a rich regional variety – the difference between north and south is really
quite striking. Not only in the climate, but the landscape, the people, their dialects and (of course)
the food! Take, for example, the northern lakes of Como, Maggiore and Garda. Surrounded
by the snow-covered Alps, their pure air has made them popular since Roman times. There’s so
much to do there – combine the palatial villas of Lake Como or Maggiore with Milan so you can
shop till you drop, or the balmy shores of Lake Garda with Verona for a truly memorable break.
My wife and I had a wonderful holiday visiting the pretty Aeolian islands of Lipari and Panarea,
as well as venturing inland south of Palermo, where even at the height of the season, the roads
were empty.

My family and I nearly always visit my home town of Minori on the Amalfi Coast. In fact, we’ve
just come back from our Citalia holiday there! As the sun goes down, it’s nice to sit in one of the
local cafes and enjoy an aperitivo, or for the girls, their favourite lemon granita. Italians are very
friendly by nature and they love visitors in their country. Whether you choose the ruins of ancient
Rome or the art museums of Florence, the rolling hills of Tuscany or a family seaside holiday on
the idyllic island of Sardinia, Italy always leaves you wanting more.
