their skin, in which case the alternative is to spritz a scarf,
a jumper or the inside of your coat for a smile-beckoning
burst of scent. At a very affordable level, meanwhile, you
might like to check out Waitrose Lime & Basil Body Wash, £2
for 200ml, which is in the same territory, fragrance-wise, or
equally deliciously invigorating, Faith in Nature Grapefruit
& Orange Body Wash, £5.79 for 400ml, from a pioneering
eco range which recently had a branding makeover that put
it back on beauty editors’ radar. (The products have always
been fab, packaging less so. And sorry, but it matters.)
Light a candle to refresh the air. I definitely have favourite
scented candles that I reserve specifically for when I’m
feeling like the treacle I’m wading through has turned to
toffee. Top of this particular list are Fragonard
Menthe Basilic Candle, £28 – this comes in a
beautifully decorated tin that can be upcycled
for trinkets or paperclips when it’s flickered its
last – and Gaia Skincare Awakening Candle,
£28 (gaiaskincare.com). This was developed
by my absolute favourite UK spa, the multiaward
winning Gaia Spa (based at the
historic Boringdon Hall Hotel just outside
Plymouth), featuring their signature aromatherapy blend
of petitgrain, lemongrass and geranium – and everyone
who comes anywhere near my office when I’m burning
this comments: ‘What’s that AMAZING smell?’ As a bit
of fun, there is also the Anya Hindmarch Chewing Gum
Scented Candle, from £50, with a scent that’s much, much
more sophisticated than it sounds and features fresh mint,
Madagascan pink pepper, thyme and more. (The funky
packaging is also guaranteed to put a smile on your face.)
Slip a mood-lifter in your handbag. Would I leave home
without something to give me an energetic ‘nudge’ when
I’m feeling knackered? I would not. Indeed, I regularly
require a handbag cull of these, when I discover that I’ve
“I have favourite
scented candles
for when I feel
like I’m wading
through treacle”
been popping one in my bag each morning and now have
three or four weighing me down. Likely to feature in that
particular stash are Tisserand Aromatherapy Happy Vibes
Roller Ball, £6.50 (bergamot, lemon tea tree and nutmeg);
Neal’s Yard Remedies Remedies to Roll Energy, £8 (rosemary,
lavender, grapefruit and geranium); and Anatomē Energy
+ Strength, £22 for 10ml (camphor, lemon, pine and
peppermint, among other essential oils); available from
anatome.co but if you’re in London’s West End, do check
out the fab shop opened on Piccadilly by this exciting new
name in aromatherapy. I also love Scentered Happy Wellbeing
Ritual Aromatherapy Balm, from £5.50 (for the mini size),
with its ‘sunshine anytime’ blend of citrus and mint; unlike
the liquid rollerballs, the essential oils are
infused in a balm which melts into skin,
but retains an impressively powerful effect.
Then swipe on your favourite red lipstick.
This is a fast-acting, well-known moodbooster
which turns that drab reflection in
the mirror into something much perkierlooking.
(What do you mean you don’t
have a favourite red lipstick? Get yourself
to a Bobbi Brown/Dior/Estée Lauder counter and fix that
immediately. Or, if you’re on a post-Christmas budget,
the Max Factor/Bourjois fixtures in your nearest Boots.)
And last but not least, treat yourself to some scented
narcissi. Nothing says ‘spring is coming’ like a bunch of
smelly daffs. I don’t allow myself to buy spring flowers till
after Christmas for just this reason (even though I saw tulips
on sale in December). That beautiful white floral scent is a
harbinger of longer, warmer days, elevated energy levels – and
literally the joys of spring we’ll be full of, soon enough.
