BITS AND PUBS...............................PUB: THE ST GEORGE’S INNIs there a doctor in the house?Well, yes, actually. There areprobably at least ten or 20sitting and standing round mytable in the back bar of The StGeorge’s Inn, in Sudely Street.It’s about 8pm on election day,and the place is abuzz withstaff from the nearby hospital,having a quick one (or three)before heading home for thelong night ahead with HuwEdwards and co.I’m here with three friendsto get some wholesome foodinside me before attending anall-night election party aroundthe corner. Until now I’ve onlybeen to the pub after visitsto the hospital, which meansthat walking through the doorbrings back some bittersweetmemories.The Royal Sussex was long-establishedwhen the pub, thencalled The Sudely Arms, firstopened its doors in 1868, soI can imagine that it’s been abolthole for people workingin and visiting the hospitalfrom the get-go. It fits thebill, somehow. It’s surprisinglyspacious inside, with woodenpanelling rising halfway upred-brick walls, and industrialpendant lamps. A great placefor a good natter, and it’s buzzingwith conversation tonight.The pub was renamed TheSt George’s Inn in 2007, andthough it’s owned by Enterprise,the barman tells me thatit’s not tied, so there’s plentyof choice when it comes to thebeer. Two of us go for pintsof Ripper, the other two gethalves of Source, and we orderburgers and fries, talking aboutthe momentous nature ofwhatever is about to happen.Everyone in the bar seemsto have ordered at once, sowe’ve sunk two drinks by thetime the food comes. Thebarman apologises – he hasn’texpected such a crowd tonight– and offers us a free pint tocompensate for the wait. Thismakes my burger, a tall affair,served with black pudding andheld together with a woodenskewer, taste even better.The mood is very differentwhen I return to the pubthe next day. I need to take apicture of the place in the daylight,and decide to have thehair of a dog while I’m there,having stayed at the party tillabout 4am, when the gallowshumour ran out. Their guestale is an Adnams bitter calledGhost Ship, a name whichseems to suit the occasion. Itake it into the astro-turfedgarden, and light a cigarette,the music from the Hamlet adplaying in my head. Alex LeithPhoto by Alex Leith....17....
