I moved to Brighton from Birminghamand I’ve lived here for four years, doesthis make me local? Originally, I am from Poland.What does your job involve? I’m managingthe set up and launch of the first Plus XInnovation Hub, which will provide 550 desksfor freelancers, entrepreneurs, makers, start-upsand scale-ups. Located at the Preston Barrackssite on Lewes Road, which has been derelict for20 years, it’s part of the biggest regenerationproject Brighton has seen for decades. My job isto ensure our innovation hub runs successfully,providing the support our members need to helptheir businesses innovate and grow. All the whileoptimising positive social impact and minimisingthe environmental impact. It’s all very exciting.It’s very big! They are calling it the New Yorkskyline of Brighton. But as the city is hemmedin between the sea and the hills, it is necessaryfor buildings to grow upwards, to provideaccommodation and work space for the growingcommunity.What do you like most about Brighton? Ilove the fact that there are people from so manydifferent backgrounds, who care about the sameissues, such as sustainability, diversity, a fair livingwage, and equality. I’m happy to have joined avery progressive community.Does anything annoy you about the city?We could do more about plastic pollution. Iwould like local businesses to sign a pledge notto use plastic bottles. That would really make adifference.Which pubs and restaurants do you like? Ilike The Better Half, in Hove, a real Englishpub with a quirky atmosphere. I walk there andback from where I live in Prestonville, so I don’tfeel guilty having a big roast. The Urchin has agood wine list, including Slovenian and Croatianwines. As for restaurants, the Salt Room neverdisappoints. Their fish is good, and they maketheir own bread.Where do you shop for food? Waitrose is mysupermarket of choice: they do more to push sustainability,like using British farmers. OtherwiseInfinity and HISBE, to stock up on healthy stuff.Is Brighton good for other shopping? Theindependent shops in the Laines and NorthLaine prove that shopping can be an enjoyableexperience, not just an act of blind consumerism.Magazine Brighton and Gunn’s Florist are someof my favourite.What’s your favourite architectural landmarkin the city? Brunswick Square. I think it is beautifullydesigned, perfectly symmetrical with thegreen in the middle and opening up to the sea.How do the South Downs compare with theCarpathians? They’re smaller! But they makefor lovely hill walks. I did the 40-mile overnightSouth Downs Way charity walk back in summer:we started at midnight and finished at three inthe afternoon.When did you last swim in the sea? In September.I used to swim throughout the year witha Danish friend. No wetsuits, just in a bikini. Butshe left town, so I lost my motivation!Interview by Alex Leithplusx.space....23....
