ZAL TECHCENTER ACHIEVEMENTSIDL AND CRYSTAL CABIN AWARDAWARDEDINNOVATION –CREATED AT ZAL54 — 55— The German Aviation Innovation Award (IDL) waspresented in Berlin for the second time on 29 June2017. Two of the four winning teams came from the ZALTechCenter, winning over the jury with their outstandinginnovation concepts. Airbus Operations and Altranwon the ›Industry 4.0‹ category, and Jetlite won for›Customer Journey.‹PRINTED ELECTRICSWith its project to print electric cabling, Airbus Operationsand Altran are in tune with the trend towardselectrified aircraft. Behind the printed electronics isa new digital technology using electrically conductiveink, whereby wiring for data and energy transmission isprinted on the surface. The vision is to do without conventionalelectrical wiring in the future. This will reducematerial requirements, save space, and achieve enormousweight reductions. The number of componentscan be reduced by up to 70%.In the future, printed electrics could replace the cablingfor air-conditioning, data transfer, and lighting. As thenew technology is easier to integrate, it makes possiblemore flexible and individually customized cabin designfor airline needs and wishes.JETLITE FIGHTS JET LAGThe Jetlite start-up, based at ZAL, aims to reduce theeffects of jet lag arising from long-haul flights. With thehelp of an algorithm based on scientific data, Jetlite hassucceeded in counteracting jet lag with cabin lightingand nutritional concepts optimized for the human biorhythm.This substantially increases passenger comfort.Jetlite′s lighting concepts are already being deployed byLufthansa.GALLEY BAR MODULE – SIGNIFICANT ADDEDVALUE WITH JUST A FEW SIMPLE MOVEMENTSIn collaboration with Lufthansa Technik AG, Diehl, aZAL partner, made it to the IDL final with the GalleyBar Module. With minimal effort, the telescopic modulecan be integrated into the galley, quickly converting thework surface into a welcome desk, a bar counter, a selfservicestation, and/or a duty-free shop. The two teamscame up with the idea for the flexible galley solutionat a ZAL workshop, and it took them all the way to thefinal of the 2017 Crystal Cabin Awards, too – Hamburg′sindustry award for innovation in the aircraft cabin, initiatedby the Hamburg Aviation cluster.
