FUEL CELL LABThe TechCenter houses a 1,200-square-meter researcharea well-equipped for fuel cell research. Facilities includeexhaust air systems along with piped gas supplies forhydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and oil-free compressed air.One special feature of the infrastructure is the option offeeding energy generated by the fuel cell systems backinto the local electric grid. Various industrial and scientificpartners shared the Fuel Cell Lab in 2017, including Airbus,the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Parker, HamburgUniversity of Technology, and ZAL GmbH.RESEARCH PROJECT: BILBOSebastian Altmann serves as an expert advisor to manyof the joint research activities, and he leads the Bilboproject on behalf of ZAL GmbH. In this project, togetherwith Airbus, AOA and DLR, he is researching ›fuel cellintegration and operational optimization in the lab‹(German acronym: BILBO). The goal is to create a broadbasis for the use of hydrogen and fuel cells on boardcivil aircraft and also at the airports to stimulateconsumption but also acceptance. A consortium ofexperienced partners is collaborating to enhance fuelcell systems for specific commercial applications, e.g.an environmentally friendly fire-extinguishing system.Innovative ideas on functional models are being developed,too, aimed at providing fresh stimuli in the aerospacesector.The first results of the project confirm that the specialenvironment presented by flight operations does notnecessarily limit the deployment of fuel cell systems;on the contrary, functional technical solutions exist, insome cases without any loss in performance. This, inturn, makes the deployment of hydrogen and fuel cellsin aviation an interesting option for reducing emissionsand increasing efficiency. The lengthy developmentphase means that we should not expect a flurry of activityon the market in the short term, but discussion ofthe technology is having a significant positive impact onvisibility and on the awareness of its potential.RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGYFUEL CELL LABInfrastructure interfaceto customers
