Independent candidates go
head to head in by-election
• By Jess Gibson
Dawn Sutton
Scott Winter
A CHURCH Bay and
Teddington resident are vying
for a position on the Banks
Peninsula Community Board.
Dawn Sutton and Scott Winter
will both run as independents
in a by-election to fill the Mt
Herbert Community Subdivision
seat on February 18.
An extraordinary vacancy
arose for one of two Mt Herbert
Community Subdivision seats
after it failed to attract enough
candidates in October’s elections.
Ms Sutton, of Church Bay,
wants to help deliver what people
in the area want and need – in
particular, roading and maintaining
and improving councilowned
properties and facilities.
The registered nurse of almost
40 years believes her people
skills and familiarity with a busy
lifestyle gives her the experience
required to fill the role.
“I like busy. It keeps me interested
and I like being part of the
community, I always have.”
Mr Winter, of Teddington,
said he put his hand up because
he was sick of “sitting on the
sidelines” looking in on the communities’
issues.
The building company owner
said he wants to tackle roading
maintenance, infrastructure and
bringing public amenities up to
scratch at places like wharves
and the Godley House site.
Low pay has been cited
as one of the reasons five
former board members
chose not to stand after
the last term.
Community board
members receive $9864
and the chairperson
$19,729. As members
work about 20 hours a
week, they would receive
roughly $120 a week after
tax.
However, both Ms Sutton and
Mr Winter said pay did not factor
into their decision to run for
the position.
Said Mr Winter: “If 20 hours
is what it takes to speak on behalf
of the people and mediate with
the council, that’s what I’ll put
in.”
Voting will open on January
27 and close at noon on February
18. A first past the post electoral
system will be used to determine
the successful candidate.
Residents within the subdivision
area who are not on the
electoral roll can enrol by phoning
0800 36 76 56, visiting www.
vote.nz or obtaining enrolment
forms at post shops or city
council libraries up until 4pm on
February 17.
For other information on
enrolments, including how
to cast a special vote, phone
