Shepherd steering A&P show
• By David Hill
TANIA KIELY admits to being
‘‘a bit daunted’’ as she looks
ahead to the Duvauchelle A&P
Show on Saturday.
The Banks Peninsula shepherd
has been elected president
ahead of the annual show in the
in what is likely to be a two-year
term.
‘‘I’m feeling a bit of trepidation,
but I’ve got a good team
around me,’’ she said.
‘‘Just knowing that you’re in
charge is a bit daunting. Last
year we had our 150th anniversary
show so it was a big show,
but this year is a routine show.’’
Ms Kiely said this year the
committee had a Royal Agricultural
Society medal to present
in the shearing section, which is
one of the feature sections along
with the horse section.
A highlight of the show is
the presentation of the Banks
Peninsula Appreciation Award
immediately after the grand
parade. Nominations have just
closed.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel, Deputy
Mayor Andrew Turner and
Selwyn MP Amy Adams have
all been invited to the show and
to join the grand parade, Ms
Kiely said.
• From page 1
Said William: “Since he [Mr
Pemberton] got diagnosed with
dementia this year, I thought I
just wanted to help support him
and what our family’s going
through because it’s quite a tough
time so I just wanted to give back
to him by raising funds for Alzheimer’s
New Zealand.”
William started his ride on December
28 and has biked about
100km a day, with the aim of
reaching the bottom of the South
Island on January 23.
Holly was sceduled to meet
William in Picton after his ferry
ride from Wellington yesterday
and they will ride from Picton to
the finish line together.
‘I’m feeling a bit of
trepidation, but I’ve got a
good team around me’
– Tania Kiely
‘‘It’s a good opportunity to
recognise what they do for the
community and a chance for
them to meet and greet.’’
Ms Kiely said Duvauchelle
had a reputation for having the
most scenic showgrounds in the
country, with the grounds looking
out on the Akaroa Harbour.
‘‘The campers like it here.
They come and spend the week
here, use the grounds to train
their horses and walk them
down to the beach and then
carry on to the Little River
Show the following week.’’
Ms Kiely has a 20ha block
where she has a small flock of
ewes and finishes lambs and a
few cattle.
She works casually as a shepherd
for various farmers around
the eastern bays, Wainui and
Little River.
‘‘I get to see most of the
peninsula . . . and it’s good
to catch up with people and
most of them are on the show
committee.’’
– Central Rural Life
Holly said she was inspired
to join William on part of his
journey after seeing the effects of
Alzheimer’s and dementia firsthand
in a volunteer role she does.
“In the past few years, I’ve been
a volunteer at a Nurse Maude
Hospice Shop in Christchurch
and we get a lot of customers who
are from lots of different retirement
villages across Christchurch
and a few have come in with
family members that have had
dementia and Alzheimer’s, so it’s
just been really heartbreaking to
see, she said.
“I think putting my love
cycling towards something like
this, it’s the way I can [help].”
Holly said the ride will be hard
DAUNTING: Tania Kiely is preparing for Saturday’s
Duvauchelle A&P Show.
work but the cause she and William
are riding for will make it
worth it.
“The most of done in one day
has been about 112km and some
days we’re doing at least 100km
with a good radical climb, so it’s
FUNDRAISER: William
Hickford is cycling across the
country to raise money for
Alzheimer’s New Zealand and
people like his grandad,
Roy Pemberton.
going to be really mentally challenging
but I think you’ve got to
remember why you’re doing it.”
William said his grandad and
granny Hilda Pemberton are
appreciative of what he is setting
out to do.
Smoke alarms
alerted
neighbours
• From page 1
Mr and Mrs Turner lost a motorcycle,
whiteware and tools, among
other items.
“Had we not put new alarms into
the garage, the fire definitely would
have tracked its way into the house
and probably have doubled in size
within 30 minutes.”
Mr Turner said knowing neighbours
“absolutely” helped the situation.
“We are lucky.”
Diamond Harbour Volunteer Fire
Brigade chief fire officer Bob Palmer
said the incident was a good example
of how working smoke alarms
and neighbours keeping an eye on
each other’s property can make a
big difference.
“Smoke alarms don’t only save
people in occupied houses but are
loud enough to alert neighbours
as well. Early alerting like this gets
us there in time to make a huge
difference to the outcome.”
Grandad inspires teen to raise funds for Alzheimer’s
“My granny’s very proud of me
obviously trying to help support
him [Mr Pemberton] as much as
possible. My grandad’s just pretty
happy that I’m riding a road bike
instead of a mountain bike. He’s
always being trying to convert
me to road bikes so he’s quite
stoked that I’m doing it on a road
bike for him.”
William said what he is doing
would also not be possible without
support from his mum and
dad Kim and Jon Hickford, who
have helped organise the ride.
