O’Donnell for national cycle event

FORMER Christchurch Boys’
High School student Bailey
O’Donnnell will be part of
the national team that will
contest the New Zealand Cycle
Classic.
THe 19-year-old had a twomonth
stint racing on the
roads of Belgium last year,
an opportunity organised by
former New Zealand cyclist
Hayden Roulston.
O’Donnell won a 100km
race, often referred to as a
kermesse, in Deinze, west of
Flanders in August.
The five-day race is
scheduled to begin today in
the Wairarapa.
There will be 108
riders competing, they
represent 18 teams from 12
countries including Australia,
France, Great Britain, Guam,
Japan, Malaysia, Malta,
Moldova, Netherlands,

MORE THAN 300
Canterbury track and field
athletics will compete at the
South Island Colgate Games at
Christchurch’s Nga Puna Wai
Sports Hub next week.
The three-day event will
see more than 900 seven-to-
14-year-old athletes compete
New Zealand, Romania and
Taiwan.
The event will see
from January 17 to 19.
It is the first time Christchurch
has hosted the event since
2008.

331 athletes competing with
Christchurch Avon Athletic
Club sending the most athletes
in the city with 96 competitors.
More than 980 athletes from
66 clubs will be competing
across the three days.

riders have earned recognition
and invaluable experience
competing in the New
Zealand Cycle Classic and he
is confident this year’s team
will be no exception.
“There is an esteemed list
of former winners from New
Zealand who have gone on to
establish outstanding careers
on the road including the
likes of George Bennett, with
his success in the cycle classic
helping promote his cause,” he
said.
“We have an exciting group
of young riders who have all
had some level of international
experience and success on
the road and the track, with
several of them heading
overseas to join quality
international professional
teams this year.”
