O’Donnell for national cycle event<br />

O’Donnnell will be part of<br />
the national team that will<br />
contest the New Zealand Cycle<br />
Classic.<br />
THe 19-year-old had a twomonth<br />
stint racing on the<br />
roads of Belgium last year,<br />
an opportunity organised by<br />
former New Zealand cyclist<br />
Hayden Roulston.<br />
O’Donnell won a 100km<br />
race, often referred to as a<br />
kermesse, in Deinze, west of<br />
Flanders in August.<br />
The five-day race is<br />
scheduled to begin today in<br />
the Wairarapa.<br />
There will be 108<br />
riders competing, they<br />
represent 18 teams from 12<br />
countries including Australia,<br />
France, Great Britain, Guam,<br />
Japan, Malaysia, Malta,<br />
Moldova, Netherlands,<br />

Canterbury track and field<br />
athletics will compete at the<br />
South Island Colgate Games at<br />
Christchurch’s Nga Puna Wai<br />
Sports Hub next week.<br />
The three-day event will<br />
see more than 900 seven-to-<br />
<strong>14</strong>-year-old athletes compete<br />
New Zealand, Romania and<br />
Taiwan.<br />
The event will see<br />
from <strong>January</strong> 17 to 19.<br />
It is the first time Christchurch<br />
has hosted the event since<br />
2008.<br />

331 athletes competing with<br />
Christchurch Avon Athletic<br />
Club sending the most athletes<br />
in the city with 96 competitors.<br />
More than 980 athletes from<br />
66 clubs will be competing<br />
across the three days.<br />

is confident this year’s team<br />

“There is an esteemed list<br />
of former winners from New<br />
Zealand who have gone on to<br />
establish outstanding careers<br />
on the road including the<br />
likes of George Bennett, with<br />
his success in the cycle classic<br />
helping promote his cause,” he<br />
said.<br />
“We have an exciting group<br />
of young riders who have all<br />
had some level of international<br />
experience and success on<br />
the road and the track, with<br />
several of them heading<br />
overseas to join quality<br />
international professional<br />
teams this year.”<br />
