Mother

Here's to the mother

who carried within her

a life and love

for ten months and in

And here's to me

who carried within her

a life and love

and lots of hunger

Here's to the mother

who with patience and power

guided her young ones

to a great life and beyond

And here's to me

who yearns to be like her

but scolds and slaps her

young ones to make them

do what she wants them to do

Here's to the mother

who cooks the tastiest

the healthiest, the yummiest

the most nutritionally balanced meals

And here's to me

who can put jam and butter

on pieces of bread

and put them together

Here's to the mother

who is poised and poignant

teaching life's lessons

and raising the best

And here's to me

who is mad half the time

than out of

and shrieking at the kids

But however that may be

the love that I bear

for my little ones

cannot be beaten

by any damn best mother in the world.

Mother

You walked out of the heavens like an angel blue…

God has bestowed so much beauty upon you

You deserve a crown sceptre and a throne…

Only person is you who I can call my own

The touch of my little finger made you happy…

You jumped with joy when I called your name in a nappy

You held me so smoothly…

I trust in you completely

You showered me with unconditional love…

I know not to return how

You are an angel mother…

Who can be replaced by none other.

For as long as I can remember…

So strong, so sensitive, so pretty.

For as long as I can remember…

You always provide stability within our family,

Beard

Dr. Diya Rachel George

Specialist - Radiology

Beard

Amar's beard was his only pride and his crowning glory. Thirty

minutes of his morning routine went to its upkeep. 5 minutes for

analysing it, from both sides and from the front. Twenty, for

trimming, then checking, again trimming, again checking and

tweezing out the occasional grey hair. And the last five, for admiring

the result. He forgot the last time he had shaved it. The rest of his

face, however, was not so fortunate and fell to deep neglect. Though

only in his mid 40s, his hairline was receding fast. Living in the hot

desert weather of the Middle East had not been kind to his face

either. Although he had not been much to look at even while living

in his homeland Kerala.

His mother used to say that his beard fanaticism stemmed from his

deep admiration of his father's beard. His father's beard was an

object of envy in his hometown. In his late teens, he had also tried a

lot of the popular remedies that his peers tried. But for a long very

time, it was of no avail. Finally, nature and probably time decided to

take mercy on him and blessed him with an abundant mane. There

was no looking back after that.

Every passing trend of beard fashion had made its way to his face

through his growing years. As the adage goes, when one grows old,

one becomes like his/her parents. For a long time now, his beard too

obeyed the custom, and became like his father's – a thick bushy

affair. His family, was however not too supportive of his weird beard

obsession. Whenever he went to visit them, his kids would complain

it pricked them while he hugged. His wife would complain of the

trimmings clogging the wash basin, him taking too much time to

groom it and umpteen other things as wives are bowed to nag

husbands about. He did not consider these, pun unintended, to be a

hair's worth.

IY

Uncle Sam, however had other plans for him. Like every other Indian engineer, his dream too was

an on-site experience in his IT company's US base. The visa and other formalities had proceeded

smoothly. The customs clearance officials at John F. Kennedy International Airport however would

not be brushed off (again pun unintended) lightly.

There is a commonality between government officials in all parts of the world. They know their

power (however limited it might be) and are willing to flaunt it and make life miserable for you.

US customs officials are one of the fiercest of the lot, one wonders whether they recruit reformed

criminals for the job, that's how tough and unrelenting they are. The black (or is it coloured/Afro

American, one always forgets the politically correct term) official took one long look at Amar's

beard. One would think that a black guy would have some empathy for a brown guy, but no way.

“What did you say your name was?” said he.

“Amar”.

“Full name please”.

“Amar N.V.”

“What's your father's name”?

By now, Amar had begun to feel slightly uncomfortable with the tone of his voice and the

harshness in his gaze.

“Nazeer”.

The Afro guy's eyes widened a bit.

“Where did you say you were working before?”

“Saudi Arabia”.

The Afro's head cocked up and he called out to a fellow official. Amar now began to get a hint of

what was going on. Countless newspaper headings about ISIS recruiting educated youngsters from

Kerala. About Saudi's involvement. About the universal paranoia to a Muslim name.

He wanted to tell the guy that the 'V' in his initial stood for Vimala, a Hindu lady. That his parents

had an inter-caste marriage. That he was not raised in any religion. That he was named Amar

because the name did not specify an religion.

But he couldn't open his mouth. Such was the fear those hefty American officials struck in his soul.

More people gathered. They talked to each other in hushed tones. A lot of phone calls were going

around. Further looks, glares, glances, gazes fell upon his beard. He wondered if the beard would

be his undoing. His death knell.

Finally one slightly kind looking official came to his side and said, “It's OK. You have been

cleared to go. But you had better take off your beard if you want to survive in this land”.

And, just like that, he was free to go. His large beard was drenched in sweat. The first thing he did

on reaching his apartment was to shave it all off. “Never again”, he told himself, “will I grow my

beard”.

Tail: People, however, do not change so fast. He became Santa Claus at all his office Christmas

parties. Suffice to say, the fake beard was his reward.

pretty little girl, Sangreal in front of her hut. Her eyes seemed to be weary and her

clothes were fully dirty with mud and was torn. She hasn't taken food since three

days and was all alone at home. She was crying and her heart seemed to be worried

as she was awaiting somebody at her door. The rain drops were flashing on to her

face, but was still looking on to the road to hear the footsteps, as if she was

expecting somebody.

She has lost her parents two months back in a flood which had made her life

miserable. She was in the pits of pain and had no interest in anything nor did she

want to live. She remembered the days that she spend with her parents, the lovely

golden days. Days passed by, mourning and cursing her faith, came the fabulous

days of Christmas. She went back to the day where her parents decorated their

houses with lights and stars. The jingle bells echoed her ears, the beautiful nights in

songs. She couldn't bear the pain as she burst out in tears.

She planned to end her life as she felt all alone. It was a Christmas eve. She thought

of going to Church and pray to God to forgive herself for the decision she has

taken. The church door was decorated beautifully, with some words in a board.

With fearing eyes and shivering hands she read the verses written there. It stated

that 'Today is Christmas, and the old man in

white beard is waiting to give you a gift'….

The White

Rope to Life

'Don't worry'… 'I am there'…

She felt somewhat lightened in her heart, stood

still, closed her lovely eyes and prayed that, 'I

am alone in this world and I don't want to live

anymore. Kindly forgive me as I am eagerly

waiting to join my parents at heaven'. She immediately ran out to the hill tops. Her

eyes were overflowed with tears and her heart beats were beating hard. The valley

under the hill was glittering with the light of stars. With her eyes closed, she

jumped down from the hill top. She was flying deep in to the pits, suddenly her

dress caught in the branches of a tree. She was struggling hard to release herself but

her efforts were in vain. She cried louder asking for help, but no one answered.

Suddenly she saw a soft white rope, handing down asking her to hold it and climb

up. She was confused. She caught on to the white raid rope and managed to come

up to the hill top. While searching there she identified that it was the long white

beard of the Santa Claus braided finely, which came to save her. Suddenly the Santa

vanished, leaving a note 'Life is precious. You are the gifted life of God, you have

many things to do in your life,… there are miles to go before you sleep'.

The little girl looked here and there, but couldn't find him. The braided long white

beard showed a path to a place, where she found a house decorated with stars, lights

and illuminations. She stepped into the house in surprise and found this braided

beard curled around on the corner of the house. A box decorated in beautiful paper

was found lying near to it. She managed to open the box with an anxious and

fearful heart. While she unwrapped the box, found a button. She rotated it, suddenly

a voice waved out saying, I am your lovely beard, I will be there with you

throughout your life as I have no death.

The little girl was overwhelmed with joy and confidence feeling that she was not all

alone. She decided to obey the words of Santa, and lived happily with a thankful

heart loving and helping the needy.

Beard

Dr. Raziya M

The 3.30pm bell at Saint Mary's Central School

rang and children in soiled uniforms with

colourful water bottles and bags ran out of the

door like candy dropping out of a glass jar. It was

mid August and the monsoon showers had just

started. I waited for junior in my car as the crisp

wipers of my Jaguar carried away the rain drops.

It was then I saw him. The frail Hindi teacher

with a shaggy beard. Although his khadikurta and

leather slippers were fairly neat, there was

something about that beard that made him quite

unfit to be a part of such a prestigious school in

town meant for the elite-born. I peered at him

closely through my windows. Yes, it was

definitely the beard that was unsettling. A wiry

spectacles disappeared into the frays of that salt

& peppery hair and chest length beard. 'Why

don't they procure a better looking teacher for

Hindi', I wondered, after all I pay a wholesome

amount to the exorbitant fees at the school. Better

yet, why can't they hire a petite saree clad pretty

little thing for a Hindi teacher.

Sharmaji, the bearded Hindi teacher was a misfit

between this English educated smooth-talking

catholic school staff. Who does he converse with

in this staff room? Do any of the other staff share

their food with him?

Sharmaji stood under the canopy of the School

foyer, scratching his head, looking at the skies,

praying silently for the downpour to stop. I

noticed he didn't carry anything except his cloth –

jhola and a book of Bal-Vikas Hindi text book. A

bang on the car door brought me out of my

reverie. It was junior soaking wet over his rain

coat, umbrella and Peppa-pig bag.

“Hey dad”, he said in a matter-of-fact-way and

pulling his seatbelt with a tug. “How was the

school today”? I asked as I put the machine into a

reverse gear. “Oh the usual, boring”, was the

monotonous reply. “Does Sharmaji need a lift?” I

asked junior, “I think he has forgotten his

umbrella”.

“No dad, Sharma sir's umbrella was stolen from

the bus he took to school in the morning. He said

it could be the urchin who got into the bus from

Sarojini Nagar”, came an elaborate reply about

the missing umbrella.

Mentally I underlined the word “urchin” in my

head, thinking to myself what sort of generation is

my son going to be a part of. Are we turning into

a community that cannot tolerate any sort of

shabbiness, even a mere beard?

I looked at my clean shaven metro-sexual

corporate look in the rear view mirror. I wondered

if my son would call me an urchin if I were to go

unshaven for a day or two.

Junior's story hadn't ended there. “Dad, Sharma

sir went looking for the beggar boy but to no

avail. Arun and I are thinking may be it was

somebody else who committed the crime. We are

IY

planning to solve the mystery”.

Kids these days, I laughed to myself. “Mystery of

the missing umbrella of the bearded Hindi

teacher”, that would make a nice story.

The chatter continued of the missing umbrella till

we drove to our lane at Connaught Place. I parked

the jag into the driveway and got out with junior's

bags and umbrella. He ran up the house to meet

his mother.

Two fancy looking umbrellas hanging in the

basement caught my attention. I bet they were

never used since the time they were bought, just

like the multitude of things scattered in my

garage. There was my old treadmill (fairly used),

my wife's cycling gear, my son's play pen etc.

which could have been useful for somebody else

but was accumulating dust at our place.

Somehow, Sharmaji standing fiddling in the rain

sat in my mind. I took one of those umbrellas and

shoved it to the backseat of my car.

The rest of the evening was uneventful with a few

phone calls, junior's banter and late night

cocktails.

As I got dressed in the morning in my crisp shirt

and tie, junior came running to me demanding a

fifty rupees donation.

“Dad, Arun and I had a conversation over the

phone yesterday night. We have decided to buy

Sharmaji a new umbrella”, he said with a sparkle

in his eye.

I smiled. My belief in the next generation was

restored again. After all it was a noble thought for

6-year old boys. At that moment, I was the

proudest dad, to stand on this ground.

I kneeled next to my son and pat his back, “It's a

wonderful idea, Tiger. But I have a better idea, I

have already found Sharmaji a new umbrella”. He

beamed with happiness and ran away with his

usual power packed energy.

We reached school earlier than usual. Junior

reached out to meet his friends probably to

discuss the rest of the bearded man's umbrella

mystery.

I carried the blue umbrella and walked towards

the staff rooms. It was easy to spot Sharmaji's

table. Isolated from the rest of the tables. A stack

of Hindi books on the table. A pitcher of cool

water by the side. It was like this man had made a

world of his own in this corner of the large room.

Sharmaji looked up from his book as I walked

towards him. He gave me a nervous smile, a little

worried as if I was a complaining parent out here

to hold him by the collar and spurt some fancy

English gaalis.

“Sharmaji, meinVivaan ki daddy. I C kakshamein”.

I said in my broken English accented Hindi.

“Ji-Ji Saab”, he said rising from his chair, shaky

hands pulling at his spectacles sprung around his

neck with black thread. “Bathaaiye”, he said,

“Kuch pareshani hain kya”, unconsciously

touching his beard again. Touching his beard was

his gesture of nervousness I understood.

“No, no sirji”. Just wanted to give you this. Bacha

batha raha tha ki yours went missing”. I said as I

extended the blue umbrella forwards. He looked at

me a little relieved and a little astonished. Wiping

his forehead and touching his beard again he

smiled. “Shukriya”, he said wrinkling up and

wiping a tear, “Lekin yeh dekiye”, he said pointing

to the corner by his table.

I was shocked to see eight new umbrellas lined up

against the wall, all for the dear bearded Sharmaji.

In this high born, gold spoon fed catholic school

culture, the dear old frail Sharmaji had made a

place in his students' hearts. Every child that heard

of the missing umbrella had carried a new one for

this unpopular, minority of the crowd, language

teacher. Sharmaji guessed my thoughts, for he

smiled again. A warm smile, a contended smile. A

smile that mocked me a bit. A smile that said that

he in his own way had served the purpose of his

life on this earth. A good teacher, no matter his

personality or looks, will always be remembered

by students. People like Sharmaji remind us that

it's not the 4BHK apartments, Mercedes or Rados

that make a person, it's the feeling and warmth of

the well-taken class, a message that will remain in

our hearts and minds forever. Hats off to that

bearded language teacher! He taught me what life's

priority should be.
