Said city council head of libraries
and information Carolyn Robertson:
“Among the rarities is The
New Zealand Wheelman, a very
fragile Christchurch publication
on cycling in the 1890s, along with
never-seen-before records of local
and community organisations and
clubs, churches, businesses and
individuals.”
Ms Robertson said the display
provides a valuable portal into the
past.
“It’s vital to enhance and extend
our collective memory and share
our heritage with the widest possible
audience via channels such as Canterbury
Stories, she said.
“By preserving our precious photographs
and publications, we can
protect those resources for future
generations.”
Christchurch City Libraries’
physical heritage collection covers
Canterbury and Chatham Island
from 1850 on and includes letters,
diaries, booklets, government documents
and personal papers.
Digitised material from this collection
will be available over time.
The Canterbury Stories display
features different themes and various
options for exploring it, including
the ability to enlarge images.
HISTORIC: Attendees at a mayoral garden party held on the
grounds of Mona Vale in the 1980s. Right – The Friendship Totem
Pole being installed at its new location near the roundabout at the
end of Memorial Ave at Christchurch International Airport. The Totem
Pole was moved from Little Hagley Park on Harper Ave in November
1980.
Said Ms Robertson: “We will
continue to share – and add –
more diverse and personal stories
and images that document the
remarkable story of our region’s
transformation.”
January is a great time to look
ahead as we start the year reenergised
from time spent with
family and friends. I’m looking
forward to continuing to work
hard for you and advocating in
Parliament to ensure our region
gets the services and resources we
need. This year we celebrate the
opening of the Northern Corridor
― I turned the sod in 2016 and
was impressed to hear about the
high safety specifications from the
project team during a site visit last
year. The project will move heavy
traffic away from residents’ houses
and provide safer journeys for all
types of travel.
These roading projects, including
the Western Belfast Bypass, are
future proofing our city’s transport
needs. It makes sense to start
work on the logical next step: the
Christchurch Northern Motorway
from Belfast to Pegasus. This is
something I’ve been fighting for
since Government cancelled the
project. I petitioned Parliament to
get behind our region. We now
have a window of opportunity to
voice our demands that this project
be re-instated after Government
was given a package of projects
to consider as part of necessary
infrastructure spending to stimulate
the economy. I will be holding a
rally on 9 February so residents
can stand together on this issue.
Access to good health services
is a priority. Elective surgeries are
down in Canterbury and this is
something residents are feeding
back to me. Having health targets
helps us to focus on the outcomes.
