Skate park rejuvenation
plan open for feedback
DESIGNS: Rich Landscapes has created a concept plan for the St Albans site that includes
several beginner street-style features.
SKATERS AND residents can get
on board with the rejuvenation of
St Albans skate park.
A proposed plan for the area,
which aims to accommodate
beginners while continuing to
cater to the more experienced
skaters, is open for feedback until
February 17.
People can share their views
in person with city council staff
at the St Albans Skate Jam on
Saturday from noon to 3pm or
submit comments online.
City council head of parks Andrew
Rutledge said the proposed
design opens up the skate park
to a greater range of skill levels –
and users.
“We want to ensure that the
St Albans skate park is a place
for everyone – a true hub for
the local skate community,” Mr
Rutledge said.
“The proposed extension
enhances the park, providing improved
facilities for urban sport
enthusiasts that complement the
revitalisation of the wider area.
“By making these changes, the
skate area can be transformed
into an accessible all-ages facility
that still remains an actionpacked
site.”
Rich Landscapes, a business
which specialises in skate park
design, has created a concept
plan for the St Albans site that
includes several beginner streetstyle
features.
The proposed new area features
roll over bumps, a quarter
pipe with a deck and a small
200-millimetre platform ramp
for those skaters starting out in
the sport.
The plan will also appeal to
experienced riders, with the addition
of a hipped end off the quarter
pipe and an extended rollover
finger to the two mini ramps.
Under the proposed changes,
the skate area will almost double
– expanding from 350 sq m to
nearly 700 sq m.
Among the proposed changes
are the double rollover bumps,
new balustrades, the steel and
concrete-edged platform ramp,
an umbrella shade sail and timber
seating.
The new design delivers a
smooth transition between the
present flow features and the
street-style extension.
Any feedback will help inform
a final decision on the proposed
plan by the Papanui-Innes Community
Board.
More no
stopping
restrictions
NO STOPPING restrictions could
be installed at the Seymour St/
Skerten Ave intersection.
The city council is considering
introducing no stopping restrictions
around parts of the intersection
to connect with the existing
restrictions towards Main South
Rd.
It has had reports of parking
activity on Seymour St, which
causes difficulties for drivers using
the intersection at Skerten Ave.
It has said it is especially challenging
for larger vehicles such
as waste trucks and those towing
trailers.
The parked vehicles also partially
block the sight-lines of vehicles
turning out of Skerten Ave.
Greater Hornby Residents’
Association chairman Marc Duff
said the proposal will be discussed
at its next meeting with potential
plans to make a submission.
He said it would be great to
have feedback from surrounding
residents.The GHRA meeting will
be held on Sunday at the Hornby
Rugby Club at 2pm.
Residents affected should email
city council’s area traffic engineer
Barry Hayes at barry.hayes@ccc.
