BRINGING HISTORY HOME

NORMANDY HOUSE

The Baptist church in Barnes Lane was built in

1816 following the Western Schism. This was

when the curate of Milford, James Evans, left

the Church of England and established the

Baptist Church in Barnes Lane, taking a large

proportion of the congregation with him.

At that time the land around the church was

mainly farmland apart from Sycamore Cottage

on the south side.

1868

2018

Mrs Harriet Shaw was living there. Mrs Shaw

was the widow of Ferdinand Albert Shaw, an

Indigo planter who had retired to Carringtons

about 1906. He was a founder and committee

member of Milford-on-Sea Historical Record

Society in 1909. It was Mrs Shaw who made the

first proposal for a "War Shrine" to be erected to

acknowledge all those Milford men who served

in WW1. The suggestion was carried through,

and the shrine was erected on the Bakehouse

wall in 1917.

The 1928 Village directory revealed that Mrs

Shaw had been joined at Harlington by one of

her sons, Harold Arthur, and his wife.

Major H. A. Shaw MC had served in the regular

army [Royal Garrison Artillery] between 1910

and 1921. After leaving the army he became a

teacher at various prep-schools until 1928. He

then started a prep school in Harlington for

army entrants, referred to locally as a crammer.

During WW2 Major Shaw served in the RAF for 3

years, following which he returned to prepschool

teaching Harlington having been

requisitioned by the army.

Harlington was bought by Colonel and Mrs

Paterson in April 1956.

Following Colonel Paterson’s Death in 1979 Sir

John Curtiss bought the house and changed the

name to Normandy House.

John Curtiss served in the RAF as a Navigator,

flying Meteors and Javelins, and in the 1950’s

would bring his family to stay with his mother in

Lymington. He loved the area and bought his

first house in Hordle in 1974.

By 1979 when he was the Commandant of the

RAF Staff College in Bracknell the family moved

to Normandy House.

Having enjoyed the views of the Solent and the

Isle of Wight from his mother’s house, he would

tell his grandchildren that he could see the

Solent from the attic windows in Normandy

House which was really wishful thinking! The

house is currently owned by his daughter.

Air Marshal Sir John Curtiss lived in Milford-on-

Sea until his death in September 2013. Following

his retirement from the RAF he was very active

in the local community, especially with

Oakhaven Hospice and the British Legion.

He had a very illustrious career and his story will

be told in more detail at Milford-on-Sea

Historical Society’s lecture, ‘More Voices of

Milford’, in November 2020.

Ordnance Survey maps show that this was still

the case in 1898; it wasn’t until the map of 1908

that a house is shown next door to the Baptist

chapel.

This piece of land was part of the Whitby family

estates but was sold by Colonel Cornwallis-West

to W. E. Cove on the 8 th July 1903. The Reverend

William Earle Cove was the Baptist minister in

Milford between 1901 and 1907, living at the

Manse in Barnes Lane, which was attached to

the chapel.

By the time of the 1911 census Reverend Cove

and his wife had moved to Mount Clear, now

Normandy House, and built on the plot adjacent

to the Baptist church. In 2017 another house,

Old Orchard, was built between the church and

Normandy House.

Kelly’s directory of 1915 showed that the Cove

family had moved again, this time to Pless Road.

The House had been renamed Harlington, and

THE MOST EFFECTIVE

DRUG EVER?

By Alison Runham

"If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the

most cost-effective drugs ever invented," says

health promotion consultant Dr Nick Cavill.

That’s true, because the benefits of exercise go

way beyond simple ‘fitness’.

Physical Health Benefits

Exercise can actively help you to prevent

disease and debility. Research has proved that

regular exercise:

• Lowers your blood pressure (and in turn

lowers your risk of stroke, heart attack, heart

failure and kidney disease).

• Increases the mass and strength of muscle

(including that most important of muscles,

the heart) and cardiovascular endurance.

• Increases flexibility and helps to prevent

strains and injuries.

• Helps regulate hormones that control your

appetite, body clock, sleep and blood sugar.

• Helps control our weight.

• Helps prevent some cancers (reducing colon

cancer risk by up to 30% and breast cancer

risk by up to 20%).

• Helps prevent some diseases, including Type

II diabetes and Alzheimer’s (reducing

dementia risk by up to 30% and delaying

decline in sufferers, and reducing Type II

diabetes risk by up to 50%).

• Helps strengthen your bones and prevent

osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

• Helps you handle the physical exertion of

daily activities and improves your balance,

helping to prevent falls.

• Helps ease pain through the release of

endorphins.

• Improves bowel function and helps prevent

constipation.

By reducing your risk of early death from

preventable conditions and falls, exercise can

increase your longevity too. However, it can do

a lot more than just improve your physical

health.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Benefits

Exercise can:

Improve your mood

The endorphins released when you exercise

can lift your mood and increase your energy

levels.

Increase your self-esteem

Not only can exercise improve your fitness and

appearance, making you feel better about

yourself, it can also give you goals, a routine

and a sense of achievement. These factors can

work together to increase your self-esteem.

Improve the length and quality of your sleep

Poor sleep can contribute significantly to

physical health issues and depression, anxiety,

poor memory and concentration. Exercise can

improve your sleep patterns.

Improve your mental health

Exercise is good for your mental health.

Alongside its effects on your mood, self-esteem

and sleep patterns, it’s also been proven to

help alleviate anxiety, stress and mild to

moderate depression. One study showed that

just 10 minutes of brisk walking can increase

mental alertness, energy and positivity, while

another found that increasing your activity

levels from zero to exercising at least three

times a week can reduce your risk of

depression by almost 20%.

Give you ‘time off’

You may not think of exercise as relaxing, but it

can be. Not all exercise involves getting hot,

sweaty and out of breath (although you do

need to do some activity every week that

makes you feel this way.). Tai chi, Pilates and

yoga are all more relaxing forms of exercise.

However, any exercise you do can take you

away from your day-to-day concerns and give

you time to focus on you, rather than your

family, your work or your worries. The need to

focus on your exercise can be a welcome

distraction and give your brain a break.

Give you the chance to get outdoors

Ecotherapy is becoming more widely used as

research proves the benefits of being out in the

countryside. You may not always be able to

exercise in a rural spot, but getting outside to

enjoy some fresh air and sunshine is great for

your mental and physical health; some sunshine

is necessary for us to produce Vitamin D

which, among other things, is essential for absorption

of calcium and good bone health.

Put more fun in your life

Experiment with different forms of exercise and

you may discover one that you actually find fun,

whether that’s country bike rides, Zumba or a

sport. This makes exercise something you look

forward to, rather than a chore.

Improve your social life and family life

Silver Swans

Stephanie runs classes both in Milford

& Lymington. Silver Swans is an

initiative by the Royal Academy of

Dance which has been developed for older

learners so they too, can take part in ballet

classes.

It is a gentle class - it’s not about doing Grand

Jetés across the room or multiple pirouettes!

Classes are aimed at the over 55s but there are

also some younger Silver Swans .

The classes can help improve mobility, posture,

coordination, balance, memory, and energy

levels - and you also get to meet new people!

Plus, it's just nice to be moving to lovely music.

Classes are made up of a full cross section:

Those who have danced as a child and want to

come back to it, those who were not able to do

ballet as a child for whatever reason, and now

If you join exercise classes or activity groups,

you will benefit from the positive effects that

socialising can have on your health and wellbeing.

There may be related social activities and

you could make new friends. You can also exercise

with your family and, if you have children,

becoming fitter will help you to take part in

more of their fun and games. Team sports can

also provide a sense of belonging and motivate

you to improve and help your team become

successful.

Zumba, tennis, surfing, swimming, rowing, boxing,

karate, netball, Pilates, ballroom dancing…

there are many types of sport and exercise, so

keep an open mind and try out several to find

something you enjoy.

as an adult want to give it a try. There are also

some who do it for the exercise, others who

have watched their children dance and want to

give it a go themselves! Complete beginners

are also welcome.

Milford Minibus coming soon...

Can you help?

As everyone is welcoming in the New Year,

Milford On Sea Charitable Trust are getting

ready to welcome a new and exciting

community asset to our village. After

significant sponsorship and support from

South Lawn Hotel together with some very

generous donations received from local

events and most recently, our wonderful

Parish Council, we are now able to purchase

a minibus which will be used to support

community projects, groups and individuals

throughout Milford On Sea and our

surrounding areas.

We are hoping that our minibus which will

be supplied and maintained by the Hyundai

Garage in Everton, will be ready to roll

within the next few weeks. We will then be

contacting relevant groups operating in and

around Milford On Sea to introduce the

project and offer them transport services.

We will also be concentrating our efforts on

trying to support individual people within

our community who may feel lonely or

isolated or, simply unable to attend events

in local villages because they are finding it

difficult to access suitable transport.

In addition to the plethora of events already

planned for 2020 in Milford On Sea, Everton,

Lymore, Downton and Keyhaven, we are

also hoping to provide opportunities for

people to visit our villages for shopping,

sightseeing, fresh air and coffee or ice-cream

in one of our delightful cafes, all in the

knowledge that they will be driven door to

door, by one of our volunteer drivers.

The minibus will be an 8-seater and

individuals will need to be able to access the

vehicle with minimal support. Charges have

not yet been finalised but rest assured that

we will safeguard that any costs to our users

will be the minimum required to cover the

upkeep of the vehicle in order that the

service can be maintained for the future.

This is a perfect opportunity for us to bring

more people into our villages to enjoy the

shops, pubs, cafes and other amenities. All

our villages have wonderful treasures to

explore and having available and accessible

transport will provide an opportunity for

local people to tell us what matters to them

and which amenities they would like to visit

and when.

The service will require a lot of volunteers to

make it work, so, if you are interested in

getting involved please do not hesitate to let

us know. We are particularly in need of

someone who has driving tuition

experience who may be able to support our

drivers on their first session driving the

Milford On Sea minibus and, we are also in

great need of finding a place to park this

wonderful community asset when not in

use. If you have a spare garage or barn and

would like to help us, please do get in touch.

As well as needing volunteers we also

welcome any ideas or thoughts that you may

have about the best way that we can utilise

this asset for the good of our community.

MCV - Creeks & Saltmarsh

‘Birding Trips’

Over the past four years MCV has organised

special birding trips in conjunction with Hurst

Castle Ferries (HCF) for anyone interested in

seeing winter birds around the Keyhaven and

Hurst Castle creeks, channels and marshes.

These have proved extremely popular with MCV

and Lymington Naturalists group members. To

date we have conducted thirty-three trips and

have more planned in February and March 2020

during which time the winter birds will have

started moving back to their summer breeding

grounds in Siberia, Iceland and Greenland.

Keyhaven Creeks & Saltmarsh

Each trip has two ‘expert’ birders and an

experienced HCF skipper on board who point

out everything we see on the 1.5 to 2-hour

trips.

Seats are available at £15 each.

Birding for Beginners’

Free

Sessions Every Month

If you would like to brush up on your bird

identification skills why not join our “experts”

at either the Bird Observatory at Keyhaven on

the 1st Saturday of each month or the Bird

Hide at Sturt Pond on the 3rd Saturday of each

month throughout the year between 10am

and Noon.

These sessions are FREE, but a small donation is

always welcome to help replenish bird food or

carry out repairs to the facilities.

The

GREEN

CORNER

Lymington

2020 Vision:

20 months to

make a lasting difference

In April 2018 Kate, a long- standing member of Transition Lymington dreamt up the concept of

Lymington 2020 Vision. In each of the 20 months leading up to the year 2020 the group collated a

tick list of ideas, links and local ways in which to make Lymington a more sustainable place. Each

month the list was published on line to distribute the ideas across the area.

Now, having reached the end of our 20 months, our 20 tick lists are a treasure trove of creative

challenges that can be used now and in the future to make a difference locally, nationally and

internationally.

Our final list of suggestions could help with your New Year’s Resolutions. However, take a look at

our Facebook site for the full set.

In the writing and completing of the Lymington 2020 Vision challenges, members of Transition

Lymington team have found fun and inspiration, and if you haven’t discovered them yet, now is a

great time to do so.

Get involved this year by coming along to our next 3 events, being held at Lymington Community

Centre from 9.30 -12.30pm.

We have also invited Figgures bikes who will carry out a free 20 point safety check on

your bike. 9.30-12.30 Entry by donation. Refreshments will be available.

Saturday 15th February - Lymington Clothes Swap. please Bring along clean clothes you

WHAT’S THE POINT OF ALEXA?

When people talk about Alexa, they are most

commonly talking about an Amazon Echo

device of some sort. Alexa is also available on

other Amazon devices and through the

relevant apps on smartphones and tablets and

is the artificial intelligence software that you

converse with.

For the purposes of this article, when I refer to

Alexa, I will be talking about an Amazon Echo

device. See Amazon UK page here https://

amzn.to/2FcG8op

So what can you do with it? A quick Google

will come up with any number of amusing

things to get Alexa to answer. And some

useful things as well.

But when you have finished getting Alexa to

meow or play your favourite radio station or

answer an obscure question, what then? Well,

it depends on what other ‘smart’ gadgets you

have in your house and whether they are

Alexa compatible.

Apart from what comes pre-programmed in

an Echo, there is a very long list of ‘skills’ that

can be added to Alexa as necessary. These

skills expand the capability of Alexa to interact

with smart devices and access specific radio

stations and other internet services.

If you are a bit of a gadget freak, a simple

search on Amazon will reveal all manner of

gadgets to do things you never thought you

might need but suddenly feel are essential!

There are Alexa compatible light fixings which

you can plug regular LED bulbs into and voice

control with Alexa.

There are also Alexa compatible wall switches,

dimmers, plug sockets, adapters and door

locks which allow you to integrate your whole

home with voice control. However, as far as

wall light switches are concerned, it’s quite

unlikely you will be able to retro-fit them due

to the way UK light circuits are wired.

Now there are some security issues with

Alexa. But just as there isn’t enough space in

this article to cover all that Alexa can do, there

also isn't enough space to discuss security.

Maybe that’s an article for the future!

Controlling smart lighting can be a genuinely

useful use of Alexa and there are a number of

ways to do this. You can get Alexa compatible

MUD SWALLOWS AND

AN ELDERLY EGRET

Only a few centuries ago people believed

that swallows spent the winter hibernating in

the mud at the base of the reeds, to then

emerge the following spring. At the end of

the summer large flocks of swallows use

reedbeds to roost in at night. The birds were

seen gathering in the reeds in the evenings,

but no one thought to check early the next

day. If they had, they would have seen the

birds emerge at dawn to fly away and

continue their migration.

We now know that European swallows

migrate to winter in sub-Saharan Africa.

Furthermore we know that British swallows

winter between Nigeria and South Africa, but

how do we know this ? The answers came

from bird ringing – fitting birds with

individually numbered rings, which also have

printed upon them an address. Over many

years swallows with such rings were found

and reported, giving us their winter locations.

As a licensed ringer I myself have had a

swallow that I ringed in summer on the edge

of Lymington, caught alive and well in winter

by ringers in Botswana.

We are connected to the rest of the world by

our local bird life, as demonstrated by

various birds that I have ringed here, which

have flown far and wide. For example, pied

wagtails that have gone to summer in Wales

and Scotland, woodcock which have migrated

to Finland and Russia, and great black-backed

gulls which have been seen wintering in the

Channel Islands and Portugal. Perhaps the

most satisfying was a Sandwich tern chick,

which I ringed out on the Lymington Marshes

one summer, which turned up the next

winter in Cape Town, South Africa.

Bird ringing does not just tell us about

migration routes; we have also learnt a great

deal about population dynamics, breeding

behaviour and the lifespans of different

species. For example, in the summer of 2006

I ringed some little egret chicks in nests in

southern Hampshire. As well as fitting them

with the usual coded metal ring, I also added

some individually identifiable colour-rings,

which are easier to read in the field through

binoculars. When these egrets fledged, one

went to the county of Avon, one headed to

Berkshire, and one moved to our local

Lymington Marshes. The latter bird is still

alive over 13 years after being ringed and it

now holds the longevity record for the

species in the UK. The previous record holder

died at the age of 9 years and 6 months.

Bird ringing in the UK and Ireland is

administrated by the British Trust for

Ornithology (BTO) and has been in existence

for a little over 100 years. If you find a dead

bird with a metal ring, please report it to the

address on the ring. If you see a colourringed

bird, please report it to the BTO. And

if you are on the sea wall near Lymington, say

hello to the oldest little egret in the UK.

Hampshire’s Climate Action Plan

My first New Year’s visit to Hampshire County

Council was to attend a Cabinet meeting where

progress on the council’s Climate Change

Strategy and Action Plan was reported. The

strategy is based on “stretching but achievable”

targets to 2050, in line with the national target,

with an eye to bringing that target forward, if

assessed as realistically and effectively

attainable.

Only 1% of emissions from Hampshire come

from the activities of the county council itself,

so it will require close partnering with bordering

counties, district, town and parish councils,

community groups, businesses and residents to

achieve carbon neutrality for the Hampshire

area by 2050.

The county council will be looking to early

action by the government to guide on larger

scale projects, such as a new recycling system.

HCC’s Local Transport Plan will be reviewed,

plus new, robust and sustainable planning

policies developed, in liaison with districts, to

encourage less car dependency. The council has

also taken advice from Forestry England, The

Woodland Trust and Plantlife and will invest

significantly in tree and wildflower planting on

Highways verges and amenity land to support

insects and wildlife, funded by the sale of

surplus Highways land.

Community resilience and preparing the county

for expected changes in climate will also be a

vital part of the council’s strategy. Autumn 2019

was the wettest autumn for more than 100

years, creating exceptionally high ground water

levels. HCC will be prioritising an early review of

its Flood Risk Management Strategy, given the

county’s considerable coastline and river

networks.

However, council actions will have limited

impact unless local businesses and households

make changes. I prefer to think of these

changes simply as: helping wildlife; reducing

waste; reducing pollution. So, when I visit a

garden centre, I choose plants that support

insects - and I’m going to feed the birds in my

garden more regularly. Rather than buy new

shampoo, I refill a bottle at The Naked Pantry

plastic-free shop in New Milton - and I am going

to write to my local supermarkets to ask if they

can reduce the plastic-wrapped food they sell.

And though I haven’t yet got an electric car, I

take the train more often - and I’m going to

dust off my bike from the shed... I’m not perfect

yet, but I’m having a go! There are many lists of

simple changes you can make, if you google.

I’ve recently set up the ‘New Forest

Environment Alliance’ on Twitter and Facebook,

to encourage more residents to join in local

environmental projects this year. Please follow.

Or join or donate to one of the hard-working

existing conservation groups who quietly get on

with improving our local environment (and have

done for many years!) such as Milford

Conservation Volunteers and Friends of Ballard

Water Meadow. Let’s all make an Action Plan in

2020! Happy New Year.

Sitting just 35 miles off the Cornish coast the

Isles of Scilly is a stunning archipelago that

feels a world away from the hustle and

bustle of the mainland. There are five

inhabited islands to choose from.

The biggest island, St Mary’s with an area of

less than 2.5 square miles, a mere six miles of

road and a population of 1,800. St Mary’s is

the gateway to the other islands and your

first port of call on any visit.

TRAVEL guide

Idyllic Isles of Scilly

delights to be discovered around every

corner.

To make the most of your time in the Isles of

Scilly, island hopping is a must. St Martin’s

offers some of the British Isles’ finest

beaches, Bryher is the perfect juxtaposition

of rugged Atlantic seascape on one side and

calm sandy beaches on the other – there’s

more to this island than Hell’s Bay. The

smallest inhabited island is St Agnes where,

at low tide, you can cross the sand bar to

neighbouring Gugh.

Whichever island you visit there’s always a

friendly welcome. Whether you’re seeking

new adventures, tales of ship-wrecks and

pirates, or hoping to spot Dolphins and

Basking Sharks, these glorious islands won’t

disappoint.

St Mary’s is the hub of the islands with a

cluster of art galleries, restaurants and pubs

as well as essentials like shops and banks.

There are three stunning sandy beaches to

explore and watersports are a popular

activity.

If you’re arriving by passenger ferry from

Penzance, you’ll sail into The Quay. It’s from

here that you’ll leave if you are travelling to

any of the other islands or taking a boat trip

to explore the uninhabited islands.

The second largest island of Tresco once held

the National Geographic Magazine’s accolade

of being one of the Top 10 Islands in the

Milford achieves Plastic-Free Community

Status

We are please to report that the village has

achieved plastic-free community status,

awarded by

Surfers Against

Sewage. The

Parish Council

pulled together

key organisations

and businesses in the town to put in place

a five-point plan. The objectives include:

setting up a community led steering group,

instigating the SAS Plastic Free Schools

education programme, getting local council

commitment and working with local

businesses, organisations and community

groups to spread the word and minimise

the amount of disposable plastics they use.

Assistant Parish Clerk Sarah Pitt said:

“We have had huge support from Milfordon-Sea’s

businesses as well as vital support

from Plastic Free Lymington Group which

really helped kick-start our initiative. We

have held

several beach

cleans this year

and many local

businesses

alternatives.

The primary

school has also

got on board as

well as local

Scouts, Guides

and Brownie groups.

We are really proud of everyone in Milford

for pulling together and helping achieve

this important status. Of course, the

village isn’t yet completely plastic free but

this is it is a significant first step and we

aim to build on achievement to ensure the

parish has a sustainable future.”

PART-TIME

POOCH

You’ve probably heard the expression, ‘ A

Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas’, Well

it turns out that now and again, it’s not

always the case. It seems that there are

times when a dog really CAN legitimately

be JUST for Christmas, (and at a few other

times throughout the year too). The lovely

people at dog-friendly Everton Nurseries

Garden Centre have been playing host to

Sophie’s Dog Holidays, and allowing them

to explain why this is so…

If you’ve visited the garden centre recently,

you might have been rather

enthusiastically greeted by a beautiful,

yellow Labrador called Honey, together

with Sophie Gates, owner of Sophie’s Dog

Holidays. Sophie was busy explaining how

she arranges very special holidays for dogs,

while their owners go off on theirs. Instead

of placing their dogs in unfriendly kennels,

Sophie arranges for them to be hosted in

local people’s comfy, cosy homes. She was

at the garden centre to search for more

local people to act as holiday hosts for

these adorable dogs. It turns out that, if

you’re one of these holiday hosts, you

really can have a dog just for Christmas, or

now and again at other times throughout

the year, and be the occasional owner of a

part-time pooch whenever you like. It

sounds fun, especially if you don’t want the

responsibility of a full-time dog. Anyway, to

find out more you can visit

www.sophiesdogholidays.com or keep a

eye out for Sophie at the garden centre

throughout the coming year.

In fact Everton Nurseries Garden Centre is

a haven for visitors with dogs. Director

Maria Curry said “We love to see our

customers’ dogs and encourage them to

bring them along. They’re welcome not

only in the garden centre but also in the

outside, covered seating area of our

restaurant, ‘Camillias’.” In addition, one of

the staff members has set up ‘Dave’s Dog

Club’, which provides a bit of wall space

where owners can bring in put photos of

their dogs for other people to see. It’s

amazing how many local customers are

dog owners and love to show off their four

legged friends to others. I’ll leave you with

a surprising fact; Did you you that there are

178,000 residents in the New Forest, and

an astonishing 39% of these people have

dogs!

Photo: 'Honey has been giving visitors to

Everton Garden Centre a very enthusiastic,

friendly welcome recently.’

WILDLIFE MATTERS ……... to all of us

Koalas and Australian Bushfires

MCV usually concentrates its wildlife efforts

on UK species, habitats and conservation, but

for this one issue we have decided to give

some thought to the people of Australia and

its devastated wildlife caused by bushfires.

At the time of going to press, twenty-three

people, including brave fire-fighters, have

lost their lives and our thoughts immediately

turn to their families and friends.

of eucalyptus leaves every day. An adult

koala weighs an average of 14kg and is

between 60 and 85cm long. Infants (Joeys)

remain in their mothers pouches for up to six

months. Eucalyptus leaves are highly

flammable and fires spread rapidly from tree

top to tree top.

The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is

doing all that it can to help koalas in distress

but at present this is an almost impossible

uphill battle.

If you feel you could help a koala in any way

then please do whatever you can to help

save some of these beautiful marsupials.

The Foundation can be contacted by going

onto the AKF website at:

www.savethekoala.com

It is also being estimated that some 480m

mammals, birds and reptiles have already

been killed by bushfires sweeping much of

New South Wales and Victoria and that

worse is to come with extreme high

temperatures and gusting winds driving the

fires onwards. More than 150 fires have so

far razed over 14.7m acres of land.

The poor koalas (marsupials not bears) are

slow-moving animals. Adults eat about 1kilo

In the Garden

with Alan Edmondson of

Bowercot Garden Design

Feb/March

Gardening Tips

• Renew surface grit around alpine plants.

• If you are planning to sow a new lawn in the spring, start to prepare the site if the

soil is not too wet.

• Clear hedge bottoms of weedy growth, fallen leaves and debris.

• Avoid over watering in the greenhouse and ventilate well on mild days. If over

wintering fuchsias are showing new growth, move them onto the staging.

• Cut canes of autumn fruiting raspberries to within six inches of the ground.

• Newly planted roses should be pruned hard in order to produce a good framework

of branches from low down.

• Newly planted deciduous hedges should be hard pruned to ensure bushy bases for

the future.

• Start to feed the fish in your pond once they appear lively.

• March is a good month for planting evergreen shrubs. Keep well watered if the

weather remains dry.

• Plant out autumn sown sweet peas.

• Sow some hardy annuals such as alyssum, nemophila and nasturtium. They are

useful as space fillers between newly planted shrubs.

• Buddleja davidii and its varieties should be hard pruned around the middle of the

month. This will produce the largest flowers.

• Turnips can be sown outdoors around the middle of the month; onions a little

earlier.

• Brassicas and leeks can be sown in a nursery bed in arch for planting out later in the

year.

SAMARITAN’S PURSE – OPERATION

CHRISTMAS CHILD – SHOEBOXES

appeal last November. A record number of 443

shoeboxes were collected from All Saints’

church last November. 50 boxes had been sent

from the Baptist church and 28 from St Mary’s

Everton, along with a few from individuals but

the majority were filled during the workshops

by my willing volunteers. So many people had

contributed with knitting hats and mittens,

sewing pencil cases and generally buying all the

goodies we needed to make a box full of

presents that children would enjoy.

Our boxes were among 8,500 which were

stacked in a container at the end of November

for a three month journey to Kyrgystan (Central

Asia) where Samaritan’s Purse partners will

distribute them. They should arrive in time for

their New Year.

As always I owe a great deal of gratitude to

everyone who contributed to the shoebox

Thankyou all very much and I hope that you will

feel inspired to join us again next year when we

try to bring a little happiness and joy to

disadvantaged children. So keep saving your

shoeboxes and whenever you see a toy or item

which could be included during the year, please

buy them and save them for the boxes.

TIP

Spinach and Ricotta Dumplings

A tasty and simple meat-free dish that is ideal for a starter or light supper.

Serve with warmed ciabatta bread to mop up the creamy sauce.

Ready in: 1 hour | Serves 4 as a starter, 2 as a main course

Ingredients

225g baby spinach leaves

150g ricotta

2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley

50g grated Parmesan

100g plain flour

2 garlic cloves, peeled and

crushed

2 medium eggs, beaten

Salt and freshly ground black

pepper

50g butter

6 tbsp crème fraiche

2 tsp freshly chopped chives

Salad leaves and cherry tomatoes,

to serve

Place the spinach in a large metal colander set over the sink.

Pour over boiling water to wilt. Refresh under cold water,

drain well then squeeze firmly with your hands to remove any

excess moisture.

Roughly chop the spinach and place in a large mixing bowl.

Add the ricotta, parsley, Parmesan, flour, garlic and eggs.

Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and mix to a

soft dough.

Using clean damp hands, divide and shape the mixture into

about 12 walnut-sized balls. Chill for 30 minutes.

Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Gently add

the dumplings. They will drop to the bottom at first then

slowly rise to the top. Once they have risen to the top, cook

for a further minute. Remove with a slotted spoon and divide

between 2 or 4 warmed dishes.

Melt the butter in a small pan. Stir in the crème fraiche and

simmer to make a creamy sauce. Pour the sauce around the

dumplings. Garnish with chopped chives and serve with salad

leaves and cherry tomatoes.

Serve the dumplings with a ready-made tomato and herb pasta sauce instead of the creamy

sauce, if liked.
