DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS

We would like to remind residents that purchasing or using the services of cold callers

can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes wrong with the service, or

product, they may prove difficult to trace. Some traders will quote a price but then ask

for substantially more money when the job has been completed.

Some work can be carried out and completed to a poor, or even unsafe

standard.

Some cold callers are also linked to burglaries, or other criminal activity. Police are asking for

residents to be vigilant and wary when dealing with cold callers at the door and to report any

suspicious persons or activity to them as soon as possible.

Please pass this information onto older, or more vulnerable neighbours as they may get targeted.

Reputable, local traders can be found via North Wales Trading Standards Services ‘Buy With Confidence’

Scheme https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk

TELEPHONE COLD CALLERS

An elderly resident has received two phone calls from a person saying he would like to arrange for an

appointment to have their solar panels cleaned and check their loft insulation. The resident lives in sheltered

housing belonging to Flintshire County Council and she was waiting to hear when they would have their solar

panels checked over the next few months (organized by the council). The resident did not agree, over the

phone, for the solar panels to be checked by the telephone cold callers company, they have checked with

Flintshire County Council who said that the company they are using hadn’t rung as yet. If you receive such a

call, do not make any arrangements over the telephone. Contact Flintshire County Council using a telephone

number obtained from a trusted source, not one provided by the caller

Another resident received a telephone call saying they wished to conduct a free survey of their roof

insulation, saying that they would call that day. The residents declined their offer and refused their offer of a

visit the following week. If you would like advice about energy matters (Flintshire area) contact The North

Wales Energy Advice Centre tel 0800 954 0658

A resident has received three telephone calls claiming to be from SKY. The caller knew the residents

surname and address. It is not known what the call was in relation to but the resident did not have SKY so

knew it was not a call they were interested in receiving. If you do have sky, and receive an unexpected call,

claiming to be from Sky, put the phone down and contact them on a telephone number obtained from a

trusted source, not one provided by the col dcaller

DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS continued

Doorstep Pedlars—Could it be a Scam?

Beware of doorstep pedlars selling household products & claiming to be ex-convicts

mending their ways. They're not part of any recognised rehabilitation scheme and use

fake ID (see pic).Warn vulnerable neighbours not to buy or sell on the doorstep

They are doorstep callers who target areas offering small household products for sale.

These callers may claim to be ex-convicts attempting to mend their ways, however,

they are not part of any recognised rehabilitation scheme.

Please warn your neighbours, particularly elderly or vulnerable neighbours, not to

open the door to strangers or buy or sell on the doorstep.

Some doorstep callers may offer poor quality goods at inflated prices and if a caller is

not genuine, they may be gathering information for future crime.

Please keep in mind that if cold callers don’t get any sales in your area, they are less

likely to return.

How do they work?

The sellers may say that they are on a “rehabilitation course” arranged by probation services or other

organisations trying to find people work.

This is not the case and often they are known criminals. Probation services do not run such schemes.

They may show a card which claims to be a “Pedlars Licence” or work permit.

The following is an example of one that has been frequently seized by police. This is not valid:

The bag of household products is supplied by someone who employs them. The males / females are supplied

with a full bag of household products (including the typical tea-towels!) and charged a minimal sum for the

contents. They can keep whatever they make, above this amount.

Usually they are deposited in an area from a car or van and given a list of streets to work. An hour or so later

they are picked up and dropped off in another location. They often work from 9am to 9pm.

They will knock on a door, offering cleaning items which they know are cheap and of very poor quality; the

householder may also recognise that they are poor quality, but that is part of the scam. Many people will

purchase items and pay them out of their good nature as they have fallen for their story or, just to get rid of

them. There have been cases of elderly residents handing over large sums as these people can be very

persistent and confrontational
