Thefts of Quad Bikes—Please Review your security
Police Rural Crime Team are warning quad bike owners to check on their
security following a recent spate of thefts of 4 x 4 machines from rural areas in
Denbighshire.
Since Wednesday October 20 th a total of 7 quad bikes have been stolen, mainly from farm locations, with
the most recent one having been stolen overnight from the Brenig area.
Police Rural Crime Team manager, Rob Taylor said “We are seeing a surge of quad bike thefts by organised
criminals who are determined to get past locks and security devices to take the machines. This is a trend
that is being replicated throughout Wales. Quad bike thefts are now a national police rural policing priority”
The recent thefts have occurred in areas of Ruthin, Cyffylliog, St Asaph and Llangollen and have mainly
occurred during the hours of darkness where criminals are loading them into waiting transport, such as vans
or similar. They may have to push them some distance before loading them onto a vehicle. Be vigilant to
vans or vehicles with trailers acting suspiciously in the area. Have you had any cold callers during the day?
Criminals will usually visit the area before the thefts by making an excuse to be on a farm, such as asking for
directions. We remind owners to up their security measures and to report registration numbers of cold
callers’ vehicles to their farms every time to the police on 101, Police Rural Crime team say they will follow
Social Media—Sales—Be Aware
Be aware of persons on Social Media advertising the sale of items, taking payment, but never sending out
the items people have paid for—even if the items purchased are for just a small amount of money. If you
wish to make a purchase it is advisable to checkout the seller thoroughly.
If you're completing the purchase online, payment systems such as Paypal offer you protections as a buyer
in the event the seller does not deliver the items you purchased. Scammers will often try to get people to
pay with a money order, cash or transfer. Avoid these payments, even with local sellers.
This is because if the seller disappears and you don’t get your purchase you will not have any way to trace it
or get it back. Please see advice in this link from WIKI HOW on preventing being scammed when purchasing
items through social media https://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Facebook-Marketplace-Scams
DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We would like to remind residents that purchasing or using the services of
cold callers can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes wrong
with the service, or product, they may prove difficult to trace. Some traders
will quote a price but then ask for substantially more money when the
job has been completed. Some work can be carried out and completed
to a poor, or even unsafe standard. Some cold callers are also linked to burglaries, or other criminal
activity. Police are asking for residents to be vigilant and wary when dealing with cold callers at the
door and to report any suspicious persons or activity to them as soon as possible. They are also asking for
residents to pass this information on to older, or more vulnerable neighbours as they may get targeted.
Reputable, local traders can be found via North Wales Trading Standards Services ‘Buy With Confidence’
Scheme https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
