DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We would like to remind residents that purchasing or using the services of
cold callers can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes wrong with
the service, or product, they may prove difficult to trace. Some traders will
quote a price but then ask for substantially more money when the job has
been completed.
Some work can be carried out and completed to a poor, or even
unsafe standard.
Some cold callers are also linked to burglaries, or other criminal activity. Police are asking for
residents to be vigilant and wary when dealing with cold callers at the door and to report any
suspicious persons or activity to them as soon as possible.
Please pass this information onto older, or more vulnerable neighbours as they may get targeted.
Reputable, local traders can be found via North Wales Trading Standards Services ‘Buy With Confidence’
Scheme https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
We have received information that bogus charity collection bags have been distributed in the Mynydd Isa
area recently. The bags claim to be linked to a cancer charity hospital, however, the hospital has been
contacted and they state that they have not distributed bags in the area for sometime. Here are some tips
to help identify genuine charity collection bags, from bogus ones
* Check – Legitimate charity collection bags will clearly state what organisation(s) funds are being raised for
and feature a registered charity number. Check these details with the Charity Commission.
* Call – A legitimate collection should include a working landline telephone number for you to call. Call this
or your local council to query the collection.
• Check- to see if the collection says it is supporting a genuine UK registered charity. Look for the charity’s
registration number on the leaflet or bag – don’t confuse this with phrases like ‘company numbers’ or
‘export numbers’.
• Check if the collection organiser is signed up to the Institute of Fundraising and the Fundraising
Regulator’s Code of Conduct or bears accepted kitemarks, such as the FRSB tick or the ACS/IOF
membership logo. Any of these could indicate that the collection is genuine.
• Find out if the named collector is a member of the Textile Recycling Association
To find out if the bag that’s just landed on your doormat is legitimate click here.
* Report – After making these checks, if you think that a collection is not legitimate, report it to Action
Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit www.actionfraud.org.uk, or notify Police

TELEPHONE COLD CALLERS
A number of telephone calls have been received advising residents that £600 was about to be deducted from
their accounts, and paid into a foreign bank. The call states that to ‘cancel the payment’ to press ‘1’. The
residents did not press 1, but checked with their respective banks, who confirmed it was a scam. Never
automatically provide information to a telephone cold caller.
Phone calls continue to be received, claiming to be from HMRC. The calls are automated and state that there
is a ‘warrant’ for the recipients arrest due to unpaid taxes. The calls go on to ask recipients to press a number
on the phone keypad to speak with the ‘case worker’. This is a scam. Please see details in this link for advice
from GOV.UK
https://www.gov.uk/report-suspicious-emails-websites-phishing/report-hmrc-phishing-emails-texts-andphone-call-scams
A resident has received an automated telephone call claiming to be from their ‘internet provider’ saying that
their internet will be taken offline due to ‘illegal internet activity in the area’ and asking them to press ‘1’ to
speak to the customer service. As a reminder, this is a scam attempt to gain remote access to your computer
and steal money from you.
EMAIL SCAMS
Computer users need to be aware of a scam message that is popping up on individual’s computers whilst
browsing the internet. The message claims to be from MICROSOFT and tells individuals that their computer
has been hacked and to ring the contact number on the message immediately to get it sorted.
If contact is made with the number provided, the victim is asked for their personal details, bank details and
Amazon account details including passwords. Once the details are provided to the suspect, the suspect will
then tell the victim to not use the computer and the suspect will access the computer remotely. A graph or
something similar will appear on the computer screen for a while and during this time, the suspect will use
the victim’s money in their bank account to purchase a large amount of vouchers from Amazon using the
victim’s Amazon account. ***IMPORTANT: NEVER PROVIDE PERSONAL DETAILS, BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS OR
ACCOUNT/ ANY PASSWORDS OVER THE PHONE OR VIA TEXT/ EMAILS/ POSTAL CORRESPONDANCE.***

EMAIL SCAMS continued
A warning has been issued after reports of a scam email claiming to be from North Wales Fire and Rescue
Service (NWFRS) has been circulated. The ‘phishing email’ was noticed by a potential new recruit to the
service after they had received a message purporting to have come from NWFRS Headquarters.
(As a reminder, phishing is a type of online scam where criminals send an email that appears to be from a
legitimate organisation and ask you to provide sensitive information. This is usually done by including a link
that will appear to take you to the organisation’s website to fill in your information – but the website is a fake
and the information you provide goes straight to the crooks behind the scam).
The email in question has the subject line of ‘Data required’ and originates from an email address of
‘dpo@nwlaes_fireservice.org.uk’ (note the spelling of the email address, i.e. ‘nwlaes’ rather than ‘nwales’).
The main body of the text contains a number of spelling mistakes but attempts to add legitimacy to the
request by giving the correct postal address of the Data Protection Officer.
NWFRS have confirmed that the email has not originated from within the organisation.
The information requested is:
“Have you been convinced/charger with illegal illicit drugs use?”
“Have you been convinced /charged with the use of a vehicle under the use of alcohol.
(Note the spelling mistakes in both questions and lack of a question mark at the end of the second question).
If you receive such an email under no circumstances should you reply to it or click on any links it contains. It is
recommended that you block the sender’s address and delete the email immediately. Please report such
emails to ActionFraud, the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime,
