BIBLICAL: A colourful mural outside St Peter’s Anglican
Preschool was finished this week.
Multiculturalism showcased
• From page 1
She said the goal was to make
passers-by’s day and hoped they
would be able to find something
inspirational and peaceful in the
mural they could relate to.
The mural is broken up into
several sections. The first part
features four key scenes from the
life of Jesus – the nativity scene,
Jesus walking on water, his death
and resurrection.
The next stage of mural was
inspired by Noah’s Ark with both
native animals including kiwis,
takahes and animals significant
to other cultures such as giraffes,
elephants, a peacock and a panda
in a kowhai tree in the painting.
Because the preschool is multilingual
– teaching English, Te
Reo Maori and Chinese, the artwork
showcases children of many
multicultural backgrounds.
boarding with a family which
runs the Manukau Christian
Charitable Trust.
The trust establishes Christian
pre-schools and collaborated with
the St Peter’s Anglican Church
to open the St Peters Anglican
Preschool in August.
While she was home for the
summer holidays, Miss Blummont,
who enjoys art as a hobby,
was asked if she wanted to do the
project before Miss Vinson was
brought in to help out.
While Miss Blummont wasn’t
quite sure what she had got herself
into, she “gave it a whirl” and
was pleased with the end results.
Petition calls for action over trucks
• From page 1
On top of putting up with the
constant noise of the trucks, he
has been battling prostate cancer
for the past four years.
Mr Thompson cannot even
open his windows as a result of
the dust caused by the heavy
trucks and need to get their house
cleaned every three months with
a chemical wash.
But he and his wife are not the
only residents suffering.
It is why Mr Thompson has
spearheaded a petition signed by
more than 66 residents calling
for action over the heavy vehicles
which use the road 24/7.
The petition will be presented
to the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board at its
meeting on February 18.
The opening of the Waterloo
Business Park and trucking firms
in the area have intensified the
issue over the past two years.
The main issue is the heavy
vehicles that are short-cutting
through Waterloo Rd to avoid
having to use Main South Rd and
Carmen Rd, Mr Thompson said.
Data collected by residents in
April showed heavy vehicles were
often using Waterloo Rd every
five to 10 minutes.
Waterloo Rd between
Racecourse Rd and Pound Rd
and between Barters Rd and
Kirk Rd is a collector road while
between Pound Rd and Barters
Rd is a minor arterial.
“All types of vehicles including
large trucks are permitted to
use collector roads. Only overdimension
vehicles are subject
to special permits,” a council
spokesman said.
But Waterloo Rd resident Russell
Wills said vehicles over 44 tonnes
are travelling up the road and that
is what residents want to stop.
He agreed the biggest impact
the trucks were having on
residents was lack of sleep and
quality of life.
The petition also calls for a
pedestrian crossing to be put on
Waterloo Rd and raises concerns
over Hornby Primary School,
Barnardos Early Learning and
Hornby High School being located
on the road.
DISTURBED: Waterloo
Rd resident Dave
Thompson says heavy
vehicles passing hs
home are affecting his
quality of life.
Other suggestions residents
made was for traffic lights to be
installed on the intersection of
Waterloo and Gilberthorpes Rd.
A city council spokesman said
a new signalled crossing will be
provided near Hei Hei Rd later
this year.
Greater Hornby Residents’
Association chairman Marc Duff
said it will work to support the
residents to progress their safety
concerns.
Mr Duff said with the new
Hornby Library, South West
Centre and Pool opening,
Hornby Primary increasing its
roll and the South Express
Major Cycle Route under way
it would be a good opportunity
to get everything addressed at
the same time.
